Most of us would have always thought celebrity dance reality show 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' to be conceptualized as a format where non-dancers get to hone their dancing skills and compete with other stars.

But with every passing season, I keep getting my own doubts. With professionally trained dancers such as Lauren Gottlieb, Mukti Mohan and child prodigies Sonali & Sumanth dancing their way to glory along with other non-dancers, it certainly isn't a fair competition.

Popular celebs like Siddharth Shukla, Karan Patel, Karanvir Bohra or even the eliminated ones including RJ Mantra, Meghna Malik, Ekta Kaul etc, everyone would have struggled day in and day out to get that step right and impress the judges. But then putting them on the same platform with highly skilled dancers, it somehow defeats the whole purpose.

If you look at the graph of these professionally skilled dancers, you'd get the clear picture of what kind of competition they can give to the co-contestants.

Lauren is a trained contemporary dancer and was among the finalists in famous international dance reality show 'So You Think You Can Dance' and she has also shook a leg with quite a few international stars including Britney Spears & Rihanna. Mukti Mohan on the other hand is sister of Dance India Dance's winner Shakti Mohan and has wooed movie buffs with her dance moves in Bollywood item songs.

And what to say about electric duo Sonali & Sumanth – they won millions of hearts when they beat all other contestants and emerged winners in India's Got Talent. This child duo comes from a salsa dance school that has produced various Bollywood dancers & choreographers too.

Rewind back to season 1 of the Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and you'd remember how popular TV actress Mona Singh, despite being a non-dancer struggled her way to be the winner. Though people would call it a classic case of popularity over talent, because the other finalist Shveta Salve was a much better dancer but that's what the whole is about.

It's about bringing a bunch of celebrities who aren't great at dancing and make them go through rigorous lessons with professional choreographers and see them performing on the big stage. Alas! Show makers prefer mixing up the line up of contestants with some handpicked trained dancers and kill the whole excitement and competition somehow loses its sheen.

Even the last season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, professional dancer Isha Sharvani was the only competition to other contestants and was a clear cut winner too just when she got injured and had to leave the show before the finale.

Having said this all, I think such a trend can only be seen in our Indian reality shows. Looks like no fixed parameters are taken into consideration while selecting these participants, which is why we see this discrepancy. In the end, it's only about TRP game and show makers don't really care if they have to include some trained dancers in the show only to set the standards high and hog limelight for controversial reasons.
