Oye heroine, yeh kaunsa naya bhoot chada tujhe pe shayri ka?

I was neither shopping nor, outing yaar. Cousin had a baby, 3 weeks earlier than her due date and her mom had not yet arrived from India. So I had to go be with her.
Can I say something honestly, man newborn babies are really ugly. They don't look human from any vantage point. 😆But they are so very tiny, it's amazing.😳

Aur kaal raat ko I was exhausted. I came home ate dinner and just crashed.

CHAPTER 15

Just then, Inspector Sangram Gujjar, who was the head of that police station, started walking towards them.

"Oh Mr. Khurana looks like you've already met the young officer who is the leader of the undercover team, you'll be heading. Please excuse her appearance. She is just back with her team from an undercover mission. Let me introduce you two formally."

"Mr Khurana, this is Sub Inspector Parinda Godbole, currently heading the Anti -Eve Teasing Squad."

&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&

"He is Mr.Maan Singh Khurana. He is going to be your self-defense instructor."

Pari and Maan both exclaimed together,

"She is a cop? Bloody hell."

"He is the instructor? Bloody shit."

Inspector Gujjar exclaimed,

"Your language, Godbole."

"Sorry sir."

"Umm, do you guys know each other?"

Again they exclaimed together,

Not at all, Inspector. I don't know her at all.

"Oh yes, sir. I know him very well."

"I am confused." said Inspector Gujjar.

"Never mind sir, it's a long story." Pari glared at Maan

"All right then, let me continue with the introduction."

"She is one of the brightest and the bravest officers we have on our team. I have especially hand chosen her for this mission. I want her and her team to be safe when they are out on missions. She and her team have very cunningly arrested four notorious men today."

Pari self consciously pushed back the hair on her face, at this high praise from her senior. Gujjar noticed the large darkening bruise on her face.

"Godbole what happened to your face?" he exclaimed.

"Nothing much, sir." she grimaced.

"One of those assho'. I mean guys, fed me a knuckle sandwich. But you should see the feast I fed him, sir."

"Baki ki khatirdari yaha puri kar doongi. Sarkari mehman jo thehra."

(I will take care of the remaining hospitality right here. After all he is a government guest now.)

She suddenly realized that she was talking to her Senior Officer.

"I..I mean sorry sir, I got a little too over-enthusiastic, I guess." She trailed off sheepishly.

Inspector Gujjar laughed at her and patted her shoulder, than continued on a serious note.

"I know you are very brave Godbole, but you should not always be the one volunteering yourself for such missions. There are other constables on your team too. Also, why don't you give yourself a break, skip the self- defense training just for today and take care of yourself?"

"No sir, nothing untoward will be allowed to happen to my team under my watch. I am their leader and I shall bear the brunt of the responsibility. I absolutely refuse to let them go through the humiliation and disgusting feelings these missions invoke. I can handle it, sir and they are there with me every step of the way. Neither am I taking off from my training." She paused and then added softly as she moved closer to Maan.

"And leaving my team alone with you Mr. Khurana."

"You are one stubborn woman, Godbole. And that's exactly what I like about you. Well then, Mr. Khurana, Godbole. I'll leave you guys to it. Mr Khurana, Sub- Inspector Godbole will lead you to the training center. Thanks once again for taking time out of your busy schedule to train the team. Have a good evening Mr. Khurana. Gobole see you tomorrow. I want a full report of today's events."

"Yes Sir."

Maan was at a loss for words and didn't quite know what to say to the woman glaring relentlessly at him. He had been extremely surprised to hear that she was a cop, yet now that he knew it he thought it suited her perfectly. Foul mouthed and brave as she was, he could only begin to imagine how it must be dealing with such crap on a daily basis. She had defended her team fiercely and it must not be easy, putting herself out there on display and allowing herself to be manhandled and abused. His jaw tightened as he remembered his driver's reaction, and if her rapidly swelling face was any indication, she had gone through a lot worse. He had been so very wrong about her. He took a deep breath,

"Sub- Inspector Godbole, I would like to.. what I mean is, I think' I was.. Well look here now.. I just wanted to' Damn it." A simple apology would just not suffice. He just couldn't find the right words. He was not a man, who usually judged a person by their outward appearance. He had been looking at her with a prejudiced eye, just because she was Geet Handa's friend. How had those two turned out to be friends anyway?

"Aaj jab aap ghar jayenge toh Dadi se kahiyega ki apki zaban kaali mirch se ragad, ragad ke saaf kare. Bacche jab totlake baat karte hain na, unhe ghee ke saath kaali mirch dete hain, par aap ke liye ghee ki bilkul zaroorat nahi hain, kali mirch ki jhan se na aapki zaban bhi khul jayegi aur uske upar ki kadvahat bhi jaal jayegi.")

(When you go home today, tell Dadi to rub your tongue vigorously with black pepper. When kids stammer, they are given black pepper with ghee to improve their speech. But I don't think ghee is needed in your case. The burning sensation of the pepper will not only clear your speech, it will also burn the bitterness right off your tongue.)

"You better behave yourself in there Mr. Khurana, I'll be watching you." Pari pointed two fingers at her eyes and then pointed them at him."

"Excuse me!! What the hell do you mean? How dare you accuse me of such misappropriate behavior?" "Ooohh!! Wow! Would you look at that? When the shoe is on the other foot, the man is all righteously angry, but when it's his turn, he hands out accusations more generously, than prasad is at a temple.

"What do you mean? You've been playing tricks on me, since this morning. First you and that child made a mockery out of me, than you flipped your finger vulgarly at me, just moments ago you swore black and blue at me, and I don't even know the reason. Wel, I understand the reason for the foul words, but what about today morning. What was that all about?

"Oh aap to antaryami ho? Aap ko toh sab ke bare mein sab kuch pata hain na. You are the judge and the jury. Go figure it out for yourself."

"Whatever!! Let's get to the training center. Please lead the way."

Maan was mad and had lost any desire to apologize to her.

They both entered the training center together. All the women rallied around Pari and started whispering.

"Maa'm wow, who is that hot guy?"

"Kya yeh bhi Police hain?"

(Is he a cop too)

"Lagta hain maine ise kahi dekah hain?"

(I feel I have seen him somewhere)

"Aapka boyfriend hain?"

(Is he your boyfriend)

Pari twisted her mouth in disgust.

"Eww!! No way!! He is not my boyfriend. Jo mera boyfriend banne layak hain woh sirf aur sirf Bri' Aah !! Never mind. Stop behaving like schoolgirls. He is Mr. Maan Singh Khurana and he is going to be our self-defense trainer. Keep your distance'.

Her voice was drowned out as the women started gossiping among themselves.

"Oh great, Ma'am has no connection with him and is not interested in him. That leaves the road clear for us."

"Hey, do I look fat in this track suit?"

"Hey pass me the lip gloss you're wearing. It looks sexy."

"OMG!! He is hot. Look at those carved muscles."

"Phew!! I feel flushed just looking at him in that sexy black vest and tracks."

"He can teach me any moves anytime."

"I will definitely volunteer, if he calls out for one."

"Oh! Now I remember. He is one of Delhi's richest, eligible bachelors. They had done a TV segment on some charity fundraiser he'd organized couple of months ago."

"He is hot, Page 3 gossip material."

Pari was shocked looking at her team. Were these her brave little soldiers who had been fighting with her only hours before? Rather than prepping themselves for a self-defense training session, they were slapping on makeup with a heavy hand.

"All of you stop it, right now. This is neither the time, nor the place to be preening and primping. I am going to kick your ass if you dare to flirt with him, instead of focusing on the training."

"Yes Ma'am."

Pari watched Maan, hawk-eyed throughout the session. One wrong move with any of her girls and she was going to rain down on him, hard. However, Maan Singh Khurana behaved more than exemplarily, throughout the session. He paired the women with each other and kept the lessons to a basic level. He glaringly ignored any flirting attempts and refused to answer any personal questions some of the women dared ask him. However, before she could reprimand them, he addressed them in a clear cold voice.

"I am here in the capacity of a teacher. I am serious about wanting to keep each and every one of you safe on the streets, and will teach you everything that you need, to the best of my ability. However, if you have time to flirt with me, then either I am not a good teacher, or you are not interested in the training and there is no need for you to come here from tomorrow. If I find that any of you is not serious, I will personally evict you from the training. Is that clear?"

"Yes Sir." They all replied in unison.

Pari reluctantly found a new found respect for him, even though she did not want to. He had been completely engrossed in the teaching and had treated each woman with caution and respect. As she got dressed and walked out, she realized she was hungry and called the canteen to deliver her favorite vada- pav at the training facility.

Almost everybody had left the place and she was by herself sitting on the steps with the plate of vada- pav in her lap. She opened her mouth wide to stuff herself and her whole injured side hurt as hell.

"Ouch!! Son of a Bitch. I am going to kill that bas***d tomorrow."

She started taking smaller bites in between the curses. That side of her face was going to be black and blue for the next few days. Suddenly her whole body sagged and she sighed. She so wanted to be with the Handa's right now. But she could not go there with her face like this. She would have to tell them what had happened and she could not bear them knowing the things she was doing currently, even if it was for the sake of duty. Tears pricked her eyes as she picked up the phone and called Baba. She was not calling Geet. There was no way she could stop crying if she spoke to Geet right now and she would immediately sense that there was something wrong.

"Haan Baba, main Pari baat kar rahi hoon. Mujhe 3-4 din ki training ke liye, Delhi se bahar jana hain, toh main ghar nahi aa sakungi."

(Baba, this is Pari. I have to go for a training session for 2-3 days outside Delhi. So I will not be able to come home.)

"Haan ekdum achanak se tai ho gaya."

(Yes, it was decided suddenly.)

"Haan Geet ka number try kiya tha, par laga nahi. Aap usse keh dijiyega. Main usse kaal baat kar loongi."

(Yes, I tried Geet's number, but I could not reach her. Can you please tell her? I will talk to her tomorrow.)

"Kya hua meri awaz ko, kuch bhi toh nahi. Main bilkul thik hoon. Accha Baba, mujhe janaa hain. Aap Geet se zaroor keh dijiyega, ki main kaal usse baat karoongi nahi toh humesha ki tarah kahama kha pareshan ho jayegi."

(No, there's nothing with my voice. I am perfectly fine. Ok, Baba I have to go now. Please, definitely tell Geet, I will talk to her tomorrow or she will worry unnecessarily, as usual.)

"Bye Baba."

Pari disconnected the phone and tears started rolling down her cheeks.

"I need you Geet."

She resumed eating, interspersed with her sobs, when she suddenly started choking and coughing on the snack. Suddenly she felt a hard whack on her back that almost sent her sprawling, nose down. She held on tightly to her precious vada and turned to glare at the person who'd whacked her.

Maan who had ordered a coffee for himself was savoring the hot liquid, when he heard Parinda cursing. He took a deep breath and determined to talk to her, headed in her direction.

He paused when he heard her talking to somebody, whom he assumed was her father. His hand jerked slightly when he heard Geet's name and some of the hot liquid spilt on his hand. He cursed silently and kept down the cold coke can in his other hand, to wipe the hot liquid off. He wanted to announce his presence, as he instinctively guessed that this woman would not like him to be a witness to her vulnerable state. She was as prickly as a porcupine, foul mouthed to boot, and completely prejudiced against him. Yet, he respected and admired this brave young woman and did not like seeing her vulnerable. He wondered again, about her friendship with Geet Handa. And that's when it hit him. The whole fiasco in the morning had been because she knew about his clashes with Geet Handa. He wondered what the other woman had told her friend about him and was mad for a moment. No, now was not the time to focus on that. He was debating how to approach her when he heard her sobbing and choking. He grinned widely as he picked up the coke can and placed it behind her, and whacked her hard on the back.

"What the hell?" She yelled and turned to find a grinning Maan standing behind her. She hastily wiped her tears away.

"Why'd you hit me?"

"Hit you? I absolutely did not. I was just trying to help you. I wouldn't like to see such a brave officer choke to death on a silly vada pav. It won't look good on your Obituary. She was brave, she was bold, but by a little vada pav, she was bowled."

Pari felt her lips stretching involuntarily into a grin at that crack, and had to bite her lip hard to stop herself from smiling. She did not want to like anything about this man. He was the evil guy who'd hurt her Geet.

He picked up the coke can and handed it to her.

"Here you go."

"Thanks, but no thanks. I don't drink coke."

"Neither do I. My choice of poison is this cup of Carbon Monoxide with 2 molecules of iron added to it."

"Excuse me, what the hell are you drinking."

"Coffee. Our science teacher during my school days told us that, when he was teaching periodic tables. Here let me show you, what I mean."

CarbonMonoxide+ 2molecules of Iron

CO+2Fe=Coffee.

Also, since you love to swear so much let me tell you, you can come up with fantastic swear words with various symbols in the periodic table.

Pari was fascinated by this information and promised herself to google periodic tables, when she got home and see what words see could come up with.

"Anyway, the coke's not for drinking. Hold it against your face. It will feel good and the chill will help the swelling go down."

He found her water bottle and opened it for her.

"Here drink this."

She took both the things from him reluctantly and started drinking the water, and held the cold can against her face.

Maan sat down beside her.

"Apne Pitaji se jhoot kyu bola. Jab ghar jaogi, kya tab unhe pata nahi chalega. Aur agar ghar nahi jaogi, apna yeh aisa chehra chipane ke liye, kaha jaake rahogi, aur chipana kyu chahti ho?"

(Why did you lie to your father? Won't he know when you go home. And if you are not going home, where are you going to stay, to hide that face and why do you want to hide it?)

He paused for a moment and then asked,

"Aur apni dost ko kyu nahi batana chahti ho?"

(And why, do you not want to tell your friend?)

"You think she will judge you? Is that the kind of person she is?" And if your attitude towards me is anything to go by, she's told you, tall tales about me.

Pari flared at him instantly.

"She is not you, Mr. Khurana, to go around judging people based on something they have misheard She never uttered a word about you until yesterday, when it was actually Miri who let the cat out of the bag, and told me about Sheru and his tail.

She smiled mockingly at him.

"The rest of the details I had to grill out of her."

"You have misjudged the most amazingly beautiful person ever, Mr. Khurana, and that is the saddest part."

"As for the person I called, he was Geet's father. My own wouldn't give a damn if I was dead or alive. But who cares, I have Baba for a father and Geet for a sister. I have Miri for a niece and I have Brij. They are my family Mr. Khurana. As for not telling Geet the truth, she will hurt if she knows. She is a worrier. She will fuss over me the whole night and keep waking up every ten times to make sure I'm ok. She will demand to know how this happened and then cry heart breaking tears, if she knows the truth. And so, even though I need her desperately right now, I'm not going to tell her."

She sighed, collected her belongings and got up.

"I am leaving Mr. Khurana. Have a good night."

She had walked a few feet, when he called out to her,

"Hold on. Let me drop you off to wherever you are headed. "

She was tempted as she was exhausted and was not in the mood to drive the bike back to the women's hostel, which was farther away than her home. But she stubbornly refused.

"No thanks. I'll ride my bike."

"Don't be a stubborn idiot. You are tired and you are hurt. Give me the address and I will have the driver drop you off."

She reluctantly nodded and recited the address.

"Good, that's right on my way home. Let's go."

Maan entered Khurana Resdiency, deep in thought. He had not gotten a chance to apologize to that stubborn woman at all. She had fallen deeply asleep, moments after she'd gotten into the car and he'd shaken her awake when they were close to the hostel.

He kept on going back to the words she'd spoken about Geet Handa. She'd defended her friend passionately. She seemed to be very close to her and that meant Pari would know her friend very well. For the first time since he'd met Geet Handa, doubt crept in. What if… he thought. But no, he'd clearly heard her greedy intentions at the party from her own mouth. But then, why were so many people ready to jump at her defense, including his very shrewd Dadi and his young, but extremely smart brother. How had she won them over? How had she ended up in his house? All these questions were racing through his mind when he entered the mansion and climbed up the stairs, only to find the subject of his thoughts right before him, drinking water from a tall glass, while chatting away animatedly with his Dadi and Dev, with that little naughty pixie cuddled up in Dadi's lap. He stood at the door and watched her momentarily. Her eyes were shining in excitement over whatever, she was showing them. She was beautiful as ever and try as he might he couldn't see anything deceptive or cunning in her. She looked sweet and innocent with her head bobbing rhythmically and her earrings swayed with her movement as if in agreement to whatever she was saying. He suddenly remembered Parinda Godbole's vulnerable face and his eyes narrowed and he suddenly had a mad urge to see if this woman would react as promptly and defensively for her friend, as Parinda had and the words slipped out of his mouth before he could curb them.

"You're having a jolly good time here, while your friend is hurt and crying there, stubbornly refusing to tell you about it, so as to supposedly not hurt you."

Four pairs of startled eyes looked at him.

"Arey Maan bete ap aa gaye? Aur kaun hurt hua hain aur ro raha hain?"

(Maan, you are back? And who is hurt and crying.)

Now that he had opened his mouth, he was going all the way. Parinda Godbole could definitely use a friend right about now. Plus he had to see, whether this woman deserved that loyal woman's friendship.

He spoke without taking his eyes off Geet.

"Sub- Inspector Parinda Godbole tumhari dost hain na. She was at the training I did today at the Police Station and she was hurt."

As the words hit Geet, there was a roaring sound in her ears and the glass slipped out of her hand, crashing to the floor and shattering. She had to get to Pari, right now. She stood up abruptly barely aware of her surroundings. She could not bear if something happened to Pari. How badly was she hurt? Where was she? Hadn't Baba called her some time ago and told her that Pari was going out of Delhi for training? Had Pari lied, not to worry them? Brij, she had to call Brij. He would know what to do. She was about to step blindly on the glass at her feet, when dadi screamed loudly,

"Geet wahi ruk jao. Aagey maat badho. Tumhare pair ke nichey sab kanch hain."

(Geet stop right there. Don't step forward. There is broken glass at your feet.)

Geet looked at the broken pieces at her feet in a trance. Her insides felt as shattered as those pieces.

"Mujhe… mujhe Brij Bhaiyya ko call karna hain."

(I…I have to call Brij Bhaiyya.)

"Haan… haan main tumhe tumhara phone lake de dungi. Tum waha se hilna maat." Dadi called out.

(Yes… Yes I will bring the phone to you. But you don't move from there.)

Geet realized abruptly that Miri was wailing and reaching out her arms for her, while Dadi was trying to hold her back.

"Mumma, Mumma. Dadi mujhe mumma ke paas jana hain."

(Mumma, Mumma. Dadi I want to go to Mumma.)

Geet looked at her crying daughter and burst into tears herself.

She pushed the chair back and avoided the glass as much as she could, even so a large piece of glass cut into her vulnerable underfoot. She went and hurriedly picked up her crying daughter.

Geet. Yeh kya kiya bete. Dekho kaanch chub gaya. Kitna khoon beh raha hain. Aur Miri ko aisie mat uthao, you will hurt yourself. Baith jao bete baith jao. Mujhe aapka apir dikhaiye.

(What have you done Geet? See you have hurt yourself with the glass. So much blood is flowing. And don't pick up Miri like this, you will hurt yourself. Sit down bete, sit down. Show me your foot.)

Geet was least bothered about her foot. She was not feeling the pain at all, as the adrenaline was pumping through her body.

"Mere pair ko kuch nahi hua Dadi, please pehle mera phone la dijiye."

(There is nothing wrong with my foot Dadi. Please hand me my phone first.)

Dadi rang for a servant and asked for a first aid box, even as she dug through Geet's purse and handed her the cell phone.

Geet called Brij and he picked up immediately.

"Bhaiyya.. bhaiyya, woh..woh Pari is hurt. I..I don't know the details. Main Dadi ke ghar pe hoon."

(Bhaiyya… bhaiyya.. that..that Pari is hurt. I..I don't know the details. I am at Dad's home)

"Mujhe aap ke boss, Maan Singh Khurana ne bataya."

(Your boss, Maan Singh Khurana told me.)

"Mujhe…mujhe nahi pata unhe kaise pata chala."

(I.. I don't know how he found out)

"Haan main abhi nikal rahi hoon, Miri ke saath."

(Yes I am leaving right now with Miri.)

"Mujhe nahi pata Pari kaha hain."

(I don't know where Pari is.)

"Ji..ji deti hoon unhe."

(Ok..Ok.. I will give it to him.)

"Bhaiyya aa..aap se baat..baat karna chahte hain." she called out to Maan.

(Bhaiyya wants to tal..talk to yo..you.)

She handed her phone to him. She looked at Maan with huge vulnerable eyes that squeezed his heart painfully.

"Please, sach sach bataiye Pari kasi hain. Kaha hain woh."

(Please tell me the truth. How is Pari? Where is she?)

"Ek minute, pehle tumhare bhai se baat kar loo?"

(One moment, just let me talk to your brother first.)

He explained to brij how he'd met Pari, what her injury was and where he'd dropped her off. He also told Brij that he'd make sure Geet got home safely.

Dadi had bandaged Geet's foot while Maan was on the phone.

He turned to Geet, who was still looking at him with those damningly vulnerable eyes.

"Pari hostel main hain na? Thik hain. Main ja rahi hoon waha. Chalo Miri."

(Pari is at the hostel right? Alright, I'm heading there. Let's go Miri.)

Aah!! She cried out as she stood on her hurt foot.

He gently pushed her down in the chair she had just vacated.

"Brij usse leke tumhare ghar aa raha hain. And you can't ride your bike in this condition. Main chod doonga tumhe ghar"

(Brij is bringing her to your house. And you can't ride your bike in this condition. I will drop you.)

&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&

Ok, this is going to be the turning point for Maan. Next time you will get to see more of his thought process and what he felt on seeing Geet's reaction.

A short narrative:

The coffee formula and the words Maan said were actually, exactly what my Organic Chemistry proff in college used to say. He'd have us make up sentences and words with elements and symbols from the periodic table. It was a fantastic way of remembering those damn complex names.

The 2 most popular one's were:

Iodine Lutetium Vanadium Uranium.

I LuV U.

And then a famous swear word

Flourine Uranium Carbon Potassium

I think you can figure that one out on your own. If you don't remember, let me remind you, the symbol for Potassium is K.😆
