Maan was drenched in sweet as he continued to hit his boxing bag. All his anger and frustration was channelled into plummeting the inanimate object and it was almost as if he was hitting himself.
Thoughts of getting married always created angst within himself, forcing him to face his created hell. The decision to never marry hadn't been a difficult one but that hadn't meant that it still didn't hurt to think that life would continue on in this manner.
He pushed himself, wanting to clear all thoughts. But as always reality would intrude and in this case it was in the form of his younger sister.
"Bhai" She spoke out tentatively from behind. "Bhai?"
And as always he had to stop for his sister. He turned around and smiled at her. "I would hug you but I am sweating like a pig"
Annie wasn't amused, she just stared before speaking out. "Is this how you plan to live the rest of your life"
"Maybe" He ran a hand through his hair, "Annie I am so happy for you and-"
But Annie interrupted him, "Stop. Don't try to change the topic. Are we ever going to talk about this? About how you are in love-"
"Stop" Maan growled.
"In love with Geet Bhabi" Annie finished and the words hung in the air between them. They had never actively spoken about this. It was an unspoken secret; he knew that Annie had guessed his secret many years ago but it was a topic that could never be breached. That was until today.
"Don't go there" Maan gritted his teeth and glared at her. It was the first time that he had ever given this stare to his sister but Annie was unperturbed.
"We skirt around the issue but today it must be spoken about" She insisted.
And that was when Maan lost control. He slammed his water bottle against the wall. "Enough! What do you want me to say? That I love her? Fine I love Geet! I love my cousin's wife"
"Widow" Annie murmured.
"God Annie!" Maan shouted, "It doesn't matter. She loves him Annie, she always has and always will!"
With that he stormed out, leaving Annie by herself. Annie just stared as the door slammed and murmured to herself, "But it doesn't mean she can't love you. Even from the beginning you were special to her, just as Vicky was"
A young Annie waited impatiently for her to annoying older brothers to come so that they could help her with her project. Her science project was due soon and both had promised to help her but now they were late.
Then she heard the doorbell ring and she ran down to see her brother, Maan, walk in with a girl. Annie's eyes went all the way up to her forehead. Her brother had many girls after him and he even dated some of them but he would never bring a girl home.
"Hi" Annie tried not to smirk as she saw her brother's stricken face at her entrance. "Who is this bhai?" Annie gave her usual innocent look, that didn't fool Maan a bit, and turned towards Geet who didn't doubt her.
"You must be Annie" Geet smiled at the younger girl and held out her hand, "I am Geet, Maan's friend. He told me a lot about you"
This time Annie's smirk took over her face, as she turned towards her brother, "Is that so? Because bhai didn't mention anything about you. Then again my brother is great at hiding things from everyone"
Maan rolled his eyes at Annie's hints, while Geet gave a confused smile.
"Anyways, I shall leave you two to have your fun" Annie laughed and was about to flounce of before Vicky entered.
"Annie the looney!" He yelled and reached over to tug at Annie's braid. As an older brother Vicky had always done his best to annoy Annie. He loved her but loved to tease her as well. "How is my bratty sister doing?"
Annie frowned and swatted Vicky's hand away but a smile was tugging at her lips. She truly felt blessed at having two of the best brothers.
"And who do we have here?" Vicky turned to Geet and winked at her. "Following me home now Geet? Well, I am too sexy and hard to resist. But honey you should have asked"
Annie choked on her laughter as Maan again hit Vicky on the head and Geet rolled her eyes whilst blushing. However something stopped her laughter.
Looking at Vicky she saw a certain sparkle in his eyes that she had never seen for any other girl. Vicky was always a flirt but never had he truly cared about any of the girls.
But as she stared at the two guys, she knew that things were getting complicated and the outcome would be dependent on Geet.
So she watched Geet, who blushed at Vicky's comment but turned to Maan with a big smile on her face.
"Maan we need to work on our assignment" She urged him and Maan just smiled as he led her away.
"Interesting" Annie thought, "Very interesting"
As Geet entered her house, she felt the familiar sting of loneliness that made her want to sink into the floor or jump off a cliff.
But as always she shoved those despairing feelings away until there was the numbness of acceptance.
She lightly brushed her fingers across the picture of her and Vicky on the side table, lingering on his face. I wish that...I wish I could touch you. Pulling her hand away, she clenched her fingers, wanting to capture an illusive sensation.
She recalled the conversation she had at her office; one of her colleagues was pregnant. The news had made her gasp with envy as well as happiness for her friend.
We were meant to have 5 children, she recalled with a bitter sweet smile. Three girls and two boys. Maybe a pair of twins. It was the illusive dream they had built their marriage on.
Indeed she still remember one of his last wishes to her.
"Geet, I will never find peace if I leave you in a world where you aren't happy" He had held her fingers against his lips, breathing the words again them. "I want to die visualising you happy...maybe even someone's mother. I would welcome you falling in love with someone else if it meant your happiness" He looked beseechingly at her, wanting to say something else but closed his mouth. "Just find happiness and make me happy."
She had tried to glare at him but instead she just held his hand against her mouth, wanting to feel the breaths while they still lasted.
She clutched her hand's against her stomach, another sort of emptiness filled her. I will never carry Vicky's child, she thought with a grief that she hadn't even realised. She had mourned for her husband but not for the family that would now never be.
But then the illicit thought of having someone else's child grew in her mind.
How would it be? She thought with a sudden insight into the life she could reach for if she had enough courage. Would I be able to bear marrying someone else and carry their child?
And the answer that hit her was a resounding yes. She couldn't love anyone the way she loved Vicky but their were different types of marriage.
But more importantly she could pour all her love into her child, get rid of some of the numbness that blinded her.
How would Vicky feel? Would I be betraying him? Another part of her questioned. She closed her eyes, trying to feel the answer.
Just find happiness and make me happy, his words echoed in her ears and heart. The answer had always been there; he loved her too much to begrudge her the joy of motherhood and companionship.
Opening her eyes, she felt the sting of tears and she crumpled onto the floor, feeling a resigned understanding of how her life would be. Yes I can have someone else child...but it won't break my heart any less to know that it could have been ours. She gasped out in her anguish, knowing that she sounded like a crazed woman but her grief had burst out.
She was barely aware of her door opening or someone crouching down next to her until a soft voice spoke into her ears.
"Geet Bhabi" Annie felt impotent at Geet's anguish. "Please tell me what happened"
"I'll...I'll never carry Vicky's child...maybe I will let someone else touch me" Geet cried out, every word burning her with their truth, "I'll betray the vows I took with him"
Annie's eyebrows rose to her hairline in surprise even as she felt saddened for Geet and her dead cousin, "What do you mean Bhabi?"
"I want to be a mother Annie" Geet leaned her head against Annie's shoulder, "I can't bear this loneliness. I need a bit of light."
