Ch.2
Geet sped her car along the vacant Delhi streets unable to steer her car in the direction of Maan's house. Her earlier decision of confronting Maan this late at night didn't seem the best option right now, not because it was so late at night but because deep down she knew she didn't want to know the truth...wasn't strong enough to hear the truth.
Maan Sir got married to Meera two days ago. Adi's words had burnt in her mind. She ran a frustrated hand through her hair as she felt another wave of tears coming. She suddenly halted the car and let her head fall against the steering wheel as sobs raked her body. Even the possibility of Adi's words being true broke her heart into million pieces of glass, one she wouldn't be able to put back together.
How could it be ? How could Maan ever do this to me ?, Geet asked herself.
She still remembered him as that sweet person who had helped her find her way to class on the first day of University. Whenever they talked about their fist meeting, Maan would always say with a laugh "I still remember that 'lost puppy' look you had on your face."
Flashback
Geet stood at the entrance of Delhi University, unable to find the courage to walk thru the doors that could change her life forever. Taking a step into this new phase life, she could learn to be independent girl, one who could finally turn her dream of becoming a writer into reality. She could become someone special, she could be an equal to everyone, not just the orphan who had no identity for herself.
She opened her timetable; it was Introduction to English literature in CLH 110.
What the hell was 'CLH'? How was she ever going to find the building and make it to class- she gave her watch a glance, in ten minutes? Damn, not the best start to the first day.
She started walking around looking for signs that could possibly be the "CLH' building.
She stopped at a group of friends, "Excuse me, could you please tell me where CLH?"
They all looked at one another for a moment before one of them spoke, "Sorry, we have no idea"
And they all marched away laughing with each other, "Really, didn't look like you had no idea", she said under her breath.
Only, if only she knew someone on this campus then maybe she would be able to find her classes. She looked at her watch again and sadly class started already.
She sighed and folded her hands, please Babaji...please help your child. She did a 360 and wondered which way she should go. The campus was so huge; she wouldn't be surprised if she missed the whole class. She opened up the campus map and wished that she wasn't geographically challenged for once in her life. She started walking just when a voice stopped her.
"Excuse me, do you need some help?"
She turned around to see a guy rise from a nearby bench and walk towards her. He was good looking, well built and with jet-black thick hair any girl would envy. And the fact that Geet noticed all that in the seconds he approached her surprised her. Geet looked right and left wondering if the 'good looking' guy was actually talking to someone else. She pushed her glasses higher on her nose and took a tiny step back just as he stopped in front of her.
"Are-are you talking to me ?", she asked and made the mistake of raising her eyes to look at him. Big mistake because he had 'beautiful' and they were truly beautiful hazel eyes with the longest eyelashes she had seen on a man.
She clutched her books tighter against her chest when he gave a half a smile, "You look a little lost, and I thought you might need help."
She smiled at the sincerity and kindness in his voice and eyes, "Yes, actually I was looking for building CLH. It's my first day and I am already late for class."
"Sure, so CLH is a little far from here. Walk down this way-", he stopped to hold her shoulders to turn her in right direction and a shiver, a actual shiver went down her spine on this warm sunny morning, but she still told herself that it wasn't at his touch that had caused it. "So walk down this way all the way to where that big oak tree, you will see the tree. And at that tree, you turn left and keep going till you see the 'Big B building' and then turn right after that building and keep walking, you will see CLH."
Geet's eyes had widened by the time the stranger had finished giving directions. Those directions almost sounded gibberish to a person like her who was as geographically challenged as she was. But she still scribbled the directions quickly and looked up to thank him.
"You know what, why don't I walk you ? You might just get confused.", he said with a easy smile instead of walking away like any other normal person would.
She could have kissed him in gratitude, well she wouldn't but she thanked him before they started walking together slowly. Though she was late for her first ever university class, a part of her didn't want to part from this sweet stranger.
"So what are you studying here?", he asked, making conversation as they walked.
"English literature.", she said simply and started toying with end strands of her ponytail.
He seemed to notice that she was a quiet, on the shy side kind of person so he smiled in response. "So I guess you like to write?"
"Actually I love to read more than I like to write so hopefully I will get to do both in the program. Someday I will write a book and get it published." She surprised herself when she told him her lifelong dream, no one knew about her dream. But then, when did she have someone to share her dreams with?
"So you aren't going to ask me what I am studying?", he asked with a cute smirk which actually made her smile.
"Well since you need me to ask, what are you studying and just how do you know the campus so well?"
She shifted her books in one hand and her hand lightly brushed his from just an instant but Geet felt the electrifying tingling sensation again.
"It's my third year here, I took two whole years to learn the campus and decided to start studying architecture in my free time."
She gave out a small chuckle at his response.
The polite conversation died down and they walked in comfortable silence towards "CLH 110."
"Well, here you are. Your destination has arrived." He did a dramatic bow as if he was her personal slave and Geet let out a little giggle.
"Thank you so much, I am sorry I didn't get to asking your name."
"Maan, Maan Singh Khurana.", he introduced himself holding out a hand.
"Geet, just Geet.", she said and shook her hand in return. "Thank you Maan, now the mission is to find of the rest of classes." She grimaced at the thought of getting lost again.
"When do you finish? I will pick you up and drop you off to your next class."
"Oh no, that's sweet of you to offer but I wouldn't ask you to do that."
"Sweet ? Of all things to say about me, you picked sweet ?" He looked pained at being called sweet that Geet actually let out a rich laugh. She was surprised that Maan had made her laugh and smile and giggle so many times in this short amount of time.
"Okay fine, not sweet but very nice of you to ask you but I am sure you have better things to do."
"Don't worry about it. So when do I pick you up ?"
She looked at Maan for a second. This was the nicest and though he didn't like that she called him sweet...but he was sweetest person she had met.
She gave her watch a glance , though she was already late. "I finish in two hours but really you don't---"
"Go, go. You will be late for class. I will be back in two hours.", he said as he started walking backwards.
"But listen Maan -- "
"I will be seeing you.", He gave a breathtaking smile and then walked away.
And he had been there after two hours, and after every class she finished since that day. For the two years they spent together before Maan got graduated, he had somehow made a timetable that would allow him to pick her up from class and drop her off to class.
And during the time he walked from one class to another, they became friends, and love had happened before they even realized it.
Flashback end
Stepping out of the car, Geet looked at the quiet, peaceful street. But her life seemed to going through a storm, a storm she wasn't sure she had the strength to survive.
But what Geet couldn't understand how she misjudged two people she trusted so much ? Geet remembered how Maan mentioned Meera a few months after they had become friends.
She still remembered his words, "She is my best friend and she is really important to me. I want you to like her."
She had respected their friendship, never overstepping bounds that would interfere in their lifelong friendship. Over time, Meera had become good friends with Geet too and Geet always thought that Meera approved of her and Maan's relationship.
She raked a frustrated hand through her tresses. Just what the hell had gone wrong in London ? Or had she been blind all along?
They had shared a great relation; Maan was also understanding and honest, never giving her a reason to not trust. In fact he had given her every reason to trust him. He had promised her to give her the family she had always wanted. He had proposed to her on the day of her graduation.
"I will always love you, I will never give you a reason to doubt the love I have for you. I know the dream you have of building a family, one you never had as a child. I want to share the dream with you, I want to be your family. Will you marry me ? ", he had said bent on one knee holding out a ring that would make her dream a reality.
Geet had said yes with tearful eyes, never once doubting the sincerity and truth of his words. But now his words had no meaning, because he broke the dream she thought she was already living.
So here it is, how was it ? I know, I know, I still didn't reveal anything but most of you know how much I like inflicting torture..lolz, I joke :P But hope you enjoyed the blast from the past.
