Lots of Love!!
Chap 20:
Geet:
She saw his handsome back brooding over the game. Concentration was etched on his face. It was vaguely inspiring. The entire room resounded with knights and rooks running into battle. He was the lone King who sat in his chair with his spritely dark demonical self. Damn it. She loved this man's attitude.
Geet "Who chose the game?"
Maan looked up a bit confused "Sorry?"
Geet "You heard me. I asked you, who chose the game from the book."
Maan broke into what appeared to be an unwilling smile "There is no escaping you, is there?"
Geet "It is a simple question."
Maan "I did. But I assure you I did not think so deeply about it. I just chose it on a whim. Probably for the very reason you mentioned. It appeared challenging. By the way where do you get all these off the charts thoughts? I still remember that poor lady who flipped the same magazine with nothing better to do. And you used that against her in the interview."
Geet just shrugged "You asked a question. I did not know anything else about those ladies other than what I saw them doing there."
Maan "Hmm again, you have all the answers. By the way nice proposal."
Geet gaped a little "I proposed?"
Maan had the most innocent face "Buy some expensive old bottles of wine from the previous century; enjoy the wine. And when the bottles are empty fill them with new wine, cork them, put them in a fancy cellar and sell them for a bomb. I could say things like 'You know wine gets better with age, like me.'"
She bit her lip to stop from grinning.
Maan "And if I get caught tomorrow I will just point my finger at you and say 'It was all her idea.'"
Geet "You are so bad and cool. You are so funny.' She snorted at the word funny and then laughed unable to contain herself.
Maan "Wicked lady. Geet, I wanted to check something with you."
Geet gave him a questioning look.
Maan "Would you like to go out sometime? I want to get to know you better."
She was shell shocked. She averted looking at his eyes. This was not happening. He was asking her out? As in the head architect of KC. The best man she had ever met in her life was interested in knowing more about her. She could not believe her own ears. She wanted to ask so many things but no words were coming out. They were all stuck at the base of her throat. It was harrowing to say the least. She was not ready to 'see' men yet. She did not have enough smarts to fool Maan for a long time that she was smart. He would find out sooner or later. She wanted to be mysterious and intriguing. It was a safe bet. He must never know that she was a certifiable neurotic mess. She was not polished and polite. She was not attractive in a way ladies were meant to be attractive. She was a dork and a nerd. She had to say no. But she did not want to disappoint him and repel him either. She liked him. She wanted to know more about him too. Her brain felt like it was going to split into two halves. She could not decide one way or another. Hey Babaji, Help!
She spoke in a low voice "Aa…you mean like a date?"
Maan parted his lips a little and then slowly shook his head "Ok that came out wrong. It is not a date. I have a rule for myself to not date women from office. It all becomes a huge mess."
Geet let go of her breath that she had been holding on to. Of course he was not interested in her that way. He had never given any such indication. How lame was she! "Then?"
Maan "Let us just say I want to just know you better. Would you mind if I kept the reason to myself for a bit? This is in no way meant to be personal. I don't want you to get the wrong idea."
Geet "I…I don't know."
He smiled "And I would prefer it if you do not discuss these things with others."
Geet "Of course not."
Maan "Thanks. Don't worry; it will never be of any inconvenience for you. I will make sure you reach home safely."
Geet nodded meekly. She just did not get what was going on. She was seeing stars and was about to faint.
Maan "I will take that as a yes. So see you around then. I will call you, I have your number."
She came out of the happy club in a daze. This was all a nightmare she told herself. She would wake up and then find that she had never met this man. She had a normal life going to college and having fun. She came back to her desk and sat down. What if she did something stupid like she did in the car. What if she overreacted for some stupid thing and just threw him off. She always believed in slow and steady friendships where people were introduced to her quirks nice and easy. Casually seeing some man was not an option for a person like her. She had absolutely no control over her emotions and feelings. She started rubbing her forehead.
Looking at the bright side, he never dated women in office. So that ruled out Naintara then, right? Not that Geet was trying to compete. She just did not want a person like Maan to end up with the wrong woman if Geet could help it. Why was she being a secret musketeer for him, she had absolutely no clue. All she knew was she could not just shut it while there was something wrong happening right in front of her eyes.
On the flip side, Dracula was due home that night. So the next day, she would have to deal with him. But she felt a vague secure feeling. If Maan was on her side, she had nothing to worry about, right?
Wrong! The next morning she received a call at 5 AM.
"Where do you stay?"
She was still groggy "#15, Bell Road Sir, why?"
Dev "Ok I am coming there in half an hour."
She sprung up. What! She could not get ready in half hour.
Geet "Sir.."
Dev "Look Geet, it does not matter. This is of the utmost urgency. Just be presentable. Don't worry about breakfast. We can eat later."
And he hung up. She did not think. She quickly ran and took a super quick shower. She was ready in record time. She quietly locked the door without waking the rest of the household. It was still dark outside. She had hardly stepped out when the SUV screeched to a halt in front of her. She wordlessly got in and buckled up. The car started and they were on their way. She observed Dev's face etched with worry lines.
Geet "Is something wrong Sir?"
Dev "Right now it is under control. But we need to hurry. We will be there soon. It is not far. And Geet, listen to me carefully. Under no circumstances are you allowed to get out of the car. Whatever you might hear. Do you get me? I am leaving the car keys inside."
Geet felt a chill down her spine "Are we having some sort of riot?"
Dev shook his head "It is just a small brawl. My bodyguard will also be reaching there soon. But you stay in the car. After that we need to go see the client. It is all damage control basically. We need to act before the client gets any wrong ideas."
Geet felt her throat going dry. Her hands felt clammy. Brawl? Bodyguard? All this was not mentioned in the job description. Her heart was pounding. They stopped by a road and she saw a gathering of a few people huddled beside a half complete building. And they were LOUD.
Dev "Alright sit in the car."
They heard a tap on the window and Dev got out.
Dev "Sallu, go to the perimeter and block all entrances. Not one press blood hound should be able to get inside. One photo anybody clicks, you are toast, get that?"
A humongous bar bouncer type man did a royal salute "Yes boss. I will take care."
Geet watched in stupefaction as Dev walked alone into the crowd of unruly men and women. No sooner had he reached she heard voices and words that she hoped she would never have to hear in the future.
"Maa ke choot. Gaand.."
Geet closed her ears and yet the voices carried. The heart wrenching cries and howls of a mother. A mother whose child had fallen from the 1st floor onto a pile of cables. Geet's eyes were tearing up at the mere thought of the torture the young woman who was wailing was going through. There was no way in hell she was going to do this job. She could not bear something like this. It was too much. She did not want these nightmares.
She watched as the woman cleared her throat and spat at Dev's face. His face and shirt were stained with big patches of red. He did not even attempt to clear the scum off his face. He stood there with his head bowed listening to every one of the curses the woman was throwing at him. Fortunately, until then he was dealing with only emotional outcry.
For a little while later the men began.
"I know where your sister is studying, you bloody weasel. I know you are hiding her in a hostel. I am going to get to her. And then you will understand the seriousness of the situation."
Geet's heart was pounding in her chest. No, this was not happening. This was insane. What did Dev's sister have anything to do with what happened to the child? This was nobody's fault. What was a child doing up on the 1st floor of a skeleton building anyway? She looked at her hands and they were shaking. This was no place for a lady. Dev was right. Her job needed a man.
Finally the people seemed tired of hurling abuses and threatening Dev. She was surprised he was not physically harmed. And then his voice bellowed.
Dev "This woman here will be getting a compensation. The child has broken a few bones it seems like and all medical expenses will be borne by KC. We will put in safety measures to prevent such a mishap from happening again. Now I am ordering all of you to get back to work."
The crowd was still restless. Money did not replace a child's life. But since the child needed to be taken to the hospital the crowd dispersed. Dev came back to the car and sat down in the driver's seat wordlessly.
She saw the big patch of red gooey mess on his face. She grabbed a few tissues from the dashboard and tried to rub it off when he held his hand up.
Dev "I can do it myself. I don't think that paan stain is going anywhere unless I apply soap anyway."
He just rubbed the stains on to his jacket and put the car in ignition.
Both of them were pretty shaken and did not speak much. Her heart went out for this man. For all that he had to hear about himself and his family for no fault of his. For not being awarded even basic respect. For being brave enough to face the entire crowd by himself while sending his bodyguard away. She did not know if he was being foolish or brave. It seemed more like foolish now that she thought about it. Any low level supervisor could have contained the crowd. What was the need to handle this himself?
She did not say anything though. It would probably anger him more. She sat quietly looking at the empty roads that were whizzing past. The Sun was breaking out and the cold wind was blowing at her face.
But she observed they were going away from the direction of office. Probably he was going home to freshen up? Good idea. It was the first good idea Sir had had all day, right? Wrong!
She saw him pull up in front of a hotel. And he barked.
Dev "Room 508. Convince the client that there is nothing wrong. Go."
She stared at him flabbergasted "What! Me?"
Dev said in an angry voice again "Do I look like I am ready for a meeting? My shirt is stained. Just make up something. You were there, weren't you? Just make sure the client does not get it into his head for a site visit in the next one week. Go!"
She gingerly got down from the car her head reeling. She had no clue what she would tell the client or how she would convince him. What she had seen had been plain mad mayhem. Anybody would be concerned if something like that had happened on the land they had bought. It was a bad omen. And if they were ultra superstitious like Brij Veerji, she was a goner. She contemplated calling Maan and asking for his advice. But she knew that would only get Dev riled up. Hey Babaji, what the hell was she supposed to do?
She was walking though. For she knew Dev would be observing her receding form. She thought about running away back home and deal with all of it the next day. Of course it was just a thought. She could not run away.
She approached the reception and gently enquired for Room 508. She prayed that the client be out. And he was out! But her luck was not that good. The client had not gone far. He had just reached the hotel swimming pool and was apparently sipping his favorite cocktail soaking in the early sun.
She was directed to take a few turns. She followed suit and reached the magnificent swimming pool. She saw an old bald pot bellied man sipping a colorful fluid from a curvy glass with an umbrella on top.
She approached him and began talking having no idea what she was going to yap.
Geet "Hello Sir, you must be Mr Malhotra? Room 508."
The man looked up "Yes?"
Geet "Sir, I am Dev Khurana's secretary."
She showed him her KC ID.
Malhotra "Hey I was going to call him. I heard something happened at the site. My supervisor wanted to get more info. But apparently the site was cordoned off by a big man stating that the area was off limits. What is going on?"
Geet smiled her brightest smile. Her dimples were on full show. The man did not appear to be swayed by it though.
Malhotra "Look lady, are you just going to stand there and smile? Tell me. I am anxious to know what happened."
Geet began hunting for some words that could possibly tell this man to stay put and enjoy the drink.
Geet "Sir, what do you think I look like? A college student no?"
Malhotra frowned "Yes. So?"
Geet laughed nervously "Ha then you have nothing to worry about."
What the hell was she saying? Malhotra had the same doubt too.
Malhotra "What does your college have to do with anything?"
Geet "See when a college student like me goes to a site what happens?"
Malhotra shook his head "I don't know. Look girl…"
She just began her rapid word trot. It was as if the link between her brain and vocal cords were lost. The words were just rolling glibly off her tongue. She never knew she was capable of telling so many lies. She hated herself for it.
Geet "Ha so. If some foolish girl like me goes to the site in times of trouble, it will become worse na. But nothing like that happened! People were calm and cool. I did not seem to bother them. Now that means everything is fine, hai na Sir?"
Malhotra appeared to think about it "I suppose you are right. So nothing happened then? I heard…"
Geet "Don't believe everything you hear Sir. The area was cordoned off so the press don't spread unnecessary news. And there was news that people were trying to instigate fights. But there was nothing. Nothing at all. I was right on the scene and people said nothing to me about anything. Being the bosses secretary and all, people would have said something in case of trouble na?"
Malhotra let out a sigh of breath "Oh that sounds good. I don't have to cancel my trip back home. I have an evening flight to catch."
Geet "Sir don't even think of cancelling. I am sure you have pressing appointments back home. We are on top of things. There is no need to get worked up about trivial things Sir."
Malhotra "Ok great. Thanks for letting me know personally. This is a big project. Lot of my money is riding on it."
Geet smiled brighter than the sunshine "Anytime. Glad to be of service. It is my job to be on top of things people are riding on. Any problem just give me a call. Here is my cell phone number."
She scribbled her number on a postit and gave it to him. That left Malhotra satisfied.
Malhotra "Ok thanks…."
Geet "Geet."
Malhotra "Thanks Geet."
That went easier than expected. May be Mr Malhotra did not want to know about the dirt. He just wanted the end results. But before she could turn back and leave, she heard his voice.
Malhotra "Send me a pdf stating whatever you told me just now. With the CEO official digital signature."
Geet gulped "Ok.". Boy men were smart.
