Hi Peoples,
Am back for now. 😃.
Kindly notice the change in font. I felt the need to change it because I needed to get over the hangover of my earlier FF in my head. Sometimes if it looks different, it feels different.
Lots of Love!!

Chap 18:

Geet:

Geet was now standing on the terrace alone. She decided to take a walk and explore the building. She saw huge satellites that were used to capture signals. These were most likely used for internet she figured. Actually she did not know what they were for. But they were much huger than TV satellite dishes.

She looked at the lone blue sedan parked. She walked beside it just running a hand over the smooth clean surface. The car was so clean. Maan was a very neat and orderly person it seemed like. She liked him a lot. She had always been a person with strong likes and dislikes. And Maan was someone she liked. Dev was someone she simply did not.

She then felt the wind in her hair and closed her eyes. This was such a serene and lonely spot. Much as she would have liked to believe her life was like everybody else's it was not. She had problems. Big problems. And being strong was not a choice. It was a compulsion.

She had almost reached the edge now. She saw below a tanker filling water by the gallon into a deep well. She tried to see if she could see her reflection from so high up. She could of course not. She closed her eyes and thought of the first person that came to her mind. The reason for her being. The person who made it all worthwhile. And as always it was Rajji. Her friends had gotten bugged of listening to 'Rajji did this…' and 'Rajji made that…'.

She then thought, did everyone have such a person? Their most important person. Without who life meant nothing. A person who could do no wrong. A person who one loved unconditionally. Most likely they did. For lucky people it was their parents. And even luckier people their sweet siblings. In fact she pitied siblings who were not on the same wavelength which included herself. They were missing out on the most precious relationship of their life.

May be Maan and Dev felt that way about each other. She felt that bond between them somehow. One can usually tell when such strong ties exist between two people. Maan behaved with Dev like an over indulgent parent. But she could not define what Dev looked at Maan as. For Dev was a volatile person with terrible mood swings.

How was she going to handle everybody? At college it was so easy to hide when she was feeling upset. She had to just put her phone on flight mode, go to the library and pretend to study. Friends came, saw and ignored. They knew studying was important for her. And they did not ask too many questions when her head was drowned inside books. At home she just locked the door of her room. Even Rajji knew better than to mess with her in those dark times.

But out here in office, hiding behind books or hard work was not a possibility. She could not stay in the restroom forever. Could not sneak out of office forever. 'Try and blend in' Maan had said. Easy for him to say. He had a natural way with his words and a sense of humor. He did not even have to try too hard. He just had to be and one felt drawn to him.

She had to stop thinking about Maan. She had to. She was foolish enough without adding her heart into the equation. She was having some dreadful feelings about him. For a few moments she had even considered changing her ring tone to the Baazigar song. Now see that was seriously demented.

She looked back and saw the lift far off. She walked slowly towards it. It was difficult. She did not know what she was going to do or how she was going to manage. But she would. Somehow. And to add to that she would avoid Maan as much as possible. There were many reasons to avoid him. The primary one being she was an idiot.

As it turned out there was no need to 'avoid' him. He had disappeared into thin air. Poof! Just like the paperweight. Most of her day was spent in bookkeeping. Arranging bills and making entries for them in an excel sheet. It was a mountain of work. She did not even have time to go to the cafeteria for lunch. She had to eat at her desk.

In fact the next couple of days passed in a similar manner. She found herself wondering if she were a clerk. She asked the same question to Pinky who kept dumping piles of bills on her desk. The prompt response was 'Finance team is short on resources. So personal entries are being made by the secretary.' Whatever that meant!

At the end of this brain numbing work, she was craving for human company. In fact she did not even mind Dracula. If she knew how to draw she would have made caricatures of him and posted it anonymously on the bulletin board. She was that bored.

So that fine and dandy evening she decided she needed a break. A break from all the mundane stuff. Her brain cells needed some exercising. She went sauntering about to everybody's desk. Did people only work in office all the time?

She reached Y2K's desk.

Geet "Hello Yash, wassup."

Yash "Hi Geetopedia."

Geet "Huh?"

Yash "Since you are as intelligent as Einstein's pet, that is your nickname from now on."

She smiled. She liked Yash. He praised her so well. She liked people who gave her compliments every now and then.

Geet "Yash what do you guys do for time pass around here? I mean this is like so boring na."

Yash "We have a little place here; a room for ourselves. In the evening people who want to socialize hook up there and play games."

Geet "Vow! That is so awesome. Like a club?"

Yash "Yep, we have recently christened it the Happy club. I am its president."

Geet was giggling. This was super fun. Happy club?

Geet "So Mr President, what all do you guys do in this club?"

Yash "As I said we organize games, sporting events. We have quite the record. The champion and our founding father is the swashbuckling MK."

She could not contain her excitement.

Geet "Does he participate too?"

Yash "Yes he mainly likes playing chess. But vigorously encourages other games too. He has been goaded, threatened, seduced and bribed. But he refuses to become the president of the club. He says he hates the limelight and attention. It gives him the heebie jeebies."

Geet was now clapping and cheering like a cheer girl. She felt like a shopaholic who had been the first to enter a store on the day of a sale.

Yash "So I was unanimously elected because of my congenial and magnanimous personality."

Geet "Ey! Vote for Yash."

Yash nodded "Next quarter, I am planning to nominate other people. This responsibility is overwhelming. Sometimes one needs to step away to get some perspective."

Geet was now getting goose bumps. She was loving this. Maan was so intelligent. He played chess! She had to learn how to play it as soon as possible. But wait, didn't one have to be actually smart to play it?

Yash "Geetopedia, with your high level of intellect and disarming demeanor you are in serious reckoning for the post. If elected you get to work closely with some very powerful people in this company."

Geet "Really?"

Yash shrugged.

Geet "Ok when is our next whatever?"

Yash "There are no timings sweetheart. If you find company you can play all night if you want. Although the office would be locked and you are in trouble if the toilet stops working."

Geet laughed. She turned and saw a rail thin nerdy looking guy walk by.

Yash "Hello my man. Come here."

The guy stepped in "Dude, thanks to you and Tara for setting me up with Pinky last week. She is adorable."

Yash "See I told you, you would like her. She is the kindest person I know. This little nugget right here is called Geet. She is DK's secretary."

The guy extended his hand for a shake "Hi I am Vicky. Assistant senior vice architect."

What?

Geet shook his hand and smiled "Hello Vicky."

Vicky "So Yash see you around."

Geet "Anything planned for today, Yash?"

Yash "As I told you we have nothing specific planned anytime. Let us just get you introduced today."

They reached the room which was the 'headquarters' of the happy club. She reached there and saw a lot of people huddled over with serious looking faces on many parts of the big room. The room was high ceilinged and somewhat airy. Her eyes began to scourge the entire space for Maan. Why? Didn't she want to ignore him?

And then she saw him, standing arms crossed by the side of couple of men who were going through a couple of pieces of paper. If she had forgotten what effect he had on her she was reminded now. May be it was not a wise decision to haunt the Happy club. It was as if his stance had power. The unbridled unharnessed power that was like the molten magma but would never flow out like a volcano unless an earthquake happened.

She watched him walk beside the couple of people playing pool. He said something by way of advice to one of the persons playing the game. He had not spotted her yet. She wanted to see his reaction on seeing her after so long. She needed to see how he would react. She needed him to go crazy and do crazy things.

She was still standing on the same spot waiting for him. He then saw her. He kept looking but somehow when he did that it did not feel like staring. She started having goose bumps once more. He did nothing out of the ordinary. He kept walking by all the game tables just as he had been doing. But she could tell he had kept her in his line of sight. She wanted no other man. She did not want any other company. She did not want anybody else. If she had him, everything else was forgotten.

Finally he managed to reach her side. He stood beside her and faced the direction that she had been looking all this while. He did not say a word. Some forces are stronger than words. Finally.

Maan "So Geet, how are things?"

Geet "I am fine. Did not see you around for a couple of days."

Maan "Out of station. What games do you play?"

Geet "I have heard chess is an interesting game. But I don't like to play it. It gives me a sense of deja vu. My grandfather used to like playing it. He tried to teach me the nuances. But I told myself it is no game for a girl and played with dolls instead."

Maan shrugged slightly "To each her own. What other games do you like. Don't tell me you still like to play with dolls."

Geet gave him a mean look "I was girly once upon a time. But now I am a tomboy."

Maan arched one brow. How did he do that? "Ah! Tomboy is it? So when is a girl called a tomboy."

Geet "I…I don't know. I guess when one is tired of being stereotyped. You know something. There used to be this pair in our college. They were big on pda."

Maan "PDA?"

Geet rolled her eyes "Oh my God! You are like ancient. Public displays of affection!"

Maan "Ah! I see. I thought it was personal digital assistant."

Geet "I would think you are a nerd then."

Maan gave a mock glare "Now look who is stereotyping."

Geet "Ok sorry baba. See now this pair was so strange you know. It was like the girl was a lesbo and he was like a gay. So we used to call them girly boy and boyy girl. Hehehe. We were like a bunch of buotches."

Maan "Geet you think I am like a pal, don't you? I am supposed to be respectable around here. My ears are feeling incinerated even listening to such atrocious talk. You are such a racist."

He was shaking his head.

Geet "Don't blame me. You give me the vibe that you are game."

Maan "Sorry. Game? What am I? Some sort of turkey."

Geet giggled slightly.

Maan "I pretend to be strict around here to maintain the discipline in office. Don't blow my cover."

She was laughing now.

Geet "I like debates by the way. I like to get into verbal battles with other people. I can argue both sides of any argument or so I am told."

Maan "Hmm. Both sides of any argument? Like any issue?"

Geet "Take your pick."

Maan "But isn't that kind of tiring?"

Geet looked at him strangely "Tiring? No I wouldn't call it tiring. Two faced, may be. But it is just a debate. Who cares you know."

Maan tapped his elegant finger on his chin "I think we have to put that to test now, don't we? Let us search for a 'game' for you to mess with. My God, I cannot believe you think people are games."

Geet smiled once more. Gave him a full flash of her dimples. She was told they worked every time. He did look at her cheek. Yey! Today was her day.

Maan "Now who has given me a hard time these last few months. Let me think. Mihir! My man. I think you might want to entice him into a debate. Flash those dimples at him too. He will argue on your side even if it is a debate."

She could not believe it. He was complimenting her! She wanted to clutch her chest and play dead. She just took a deep breath instead.

Maan "Mihir, come up here man."

Mihir "Yes MK."

Maan "Geet here is very interested in debates. Now I thought why not get started with them tonight. I remember you saying you were good at them?"

Mihir scratched his head "I did? When?"

Maan "So let us get started then now, shall we? This is Geet, Dev's secretary."

Mihir smiled at her "Hello Geet. So you will be my counterpart."

Maan "I have a nice topic. It might seem nerdy to you. But humor me Geet. 'Efficacy of Press in India'."

Geet "Am I for or against the topic?"

Maan "Let us make you against and Mihir for the debate. So start. Mihir go."

Mihir cleared his throat "Alright now I don't know what is there to argue about this. The news reporting has grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years. We are having all kinds of news at our finger tips. We are more informed than we were ever before. So I would say the press has been very efficient."

Geet "See when you think about events that happen around us, the news channels report it. They sometimes sensationalize it. But they are just supposed to present an unbiased point of view. That does not seem to be the case nowadays. Earlier news reading used to involve a person sitting in a chair looking expressionless and narrating the events in a monotone. Rarely was that person shown to be at the scene of the event."

Mihir "So you believe that the visual way of providing news is wrong?"

Geet "Yes. See when one is reporting news visually, they focus the camera only on a certain angle and a certain way in which the photographer wishes it."

Mihir "But we can see even in news reading that the footage is sometimes shown along with the vocal aspect. What do you have to say about that?"

Geet "TV channels nowadays tell us how to absorb the information. They tell us their own skewed point of view leaving no room for debate of any kind. Press is supposed to be impartial observer and provider of information. But what they end up becoming is someone who build knowledge. They teach the world around them how to view things. Which is the difference between providing information and creating falsified knowledge."

Mihir "Falsified? Just because you do not agree with a particular point of view does not make it falsified. The press voices the emotions and sentiments of the people around them. Now a news reporter is more than just a person who delivers information. He becomes a person who is the conscience of society. He speaks for the common good of everybody. What is wrong with that? What is wrong with the way of presenting information that helps sensitize a person with the issues instead of giving boring anecdotes."

Geet "Because that is what the Press stands for. An impartial observer. They are supposed to report impassively. Not participate. They are not the preachers of moral science. If they start preaching what people are supposed to do, it is dangerous because they are the gate keepers of information. It would invariably result in sensationalism if the holder of information decides to rank it. It is up to the polity and administration to sway the opinion of the people and not the press."

Mihir "For your kindest information Ms Geet, the news channels do hold debates. They invite all stake holders and then ask for their opinion."

Geet "That is the point. They must not hold debates. They must not decide what course of action must be taken in any issue.. They must interview various people and present their respective points of view. Not hold dialogues."

Mihir "Ms Geet have you ever read something called newspaper? It has been there since centuries. They present a few columns where journalists state their opinions and I think you need to…"

Geet "Do we need to blindly embrace something just because it is there? Are we not allowed to question it even?"

Mihir "Only it is pointless."

Geet "It is pointless if one is not daring enough to debate the efficiency of it."

Mihir "What is the point of debating something that is inevitable? Sometimes being negative helps the harmony of all concerned."

Geet "Being negative does not mean just embracing everything that comes and empathizing with everybody."

Mihir "So you want those millions of people who are employed by the news channels to go unemployed? If you don't want to hear the news, change the channel."

Geet "That does not stop it from spreading and reaching me through other sources."

Maan "Ok I think that is time up. Good job, you guys. Great job, I would say."

Geet felt a new wave of euphoria hitting her. It was the first time she had been appreciated for anything in the office. Be it a silly debate. Was this her day or what?
