PASSION
" Yeh lights ko achanak kya ho gayaa? Geet, GEET?" Rano called out, extremely annoyed, and slightly embarrassed.
" Ji, Maa", Geet hurried over to the hall, and said, " Main dekhti hoon. Shayed, fuse chala gayaa"
" Nahin, Geet. Stay where you are. I will go check." Mohinder replied, afraid that Geet might end up hurting herself in the darkness.
" Baba, main jaati hoon. You'll get hurt, or trip. I know, where the fuse box is", she said, as the others groaned impatiently.
" Geet, tu jaa..Waise bhi, you're the only one here who knows how to fix it. Lekin jaldi'", Rano said, impatiently.
Geet nodded her head, and then realized that no one probably saw it. She started moving deftly towards the backyard; where just by the entrance of the lawn was the switchboard and fusebox, for the whole house. She bumped into someone, who held her and said, " Geet, bete, lights ko kya hua?"
" Aditya uncle, aap andaar ja kar bethiye, main dekhti hoon", she said, slowly letting him go, and moving aside, as he groped his way inside.
She moved out, suddenly feeling the chill of the air on her body. Realizing that she had probably reached the lawn, she shut the back door, and moved towards the fusebox, as quickly as she could in the dark. She tried to think of the others sitting inside, and waiting for the lights, in order to distract herself from the intimidating, and rather, scary darkness. Feeling her way around the fusebox, she snapped it open, and, cried out loud. Yeh lo, fuse thik karne aayi hoon, aur candle hi nahin layii' Geet, yeh Maan ke aane se tera dimaag kaam karna bilkul baandh kar diya hain.
" Kyun?" her blood froze, as she heard the voice after two whole months. She stood rooted to her spot, as if, the time had stopped. He was behind her, she could feel it, but she couldn't turn around. Her cheeks burned even in the darkness, and she bit her lips hard, as she suddenly realized, that he had heard her words, because, the idiot she was, she had said them aloud, clear.
There was a slight click, and the place was suddenly filled by a dim light. She shivered, as he stood behind her, his hand in front of her face, holding the lighter close to the fusebox. Geet didn't dare turn, as he pressed himself closer, and whispered, " Tum kya keh rahi thi?"
Her hands were on the fusebox, and they halted their movements, as his breath fell on the bare skin of her neck. She closed her eyes, as her lungs filled with his cologne, and overpowered her senses, as always.
" Kkuucchhh'kkuucchhh'kuch nahin.." she almost bit her tongue out, as the words stammered themselves out of her reluctant mouth. Her hands trembled slightly on the fusebox, and she couldn't fix the switch.
Geet felt him smirk behind her back, still holding the lighter near the fusebox, giving her the light she needed. It felt so strange. They stood there, without even looking at each other once, and still, he managed to play havoc with her senses.
" Why has your mind stopped working, since I came?" he asked, almost causing her to cut her finger on the sharp edge of the wire she was holding in her hand.
She tried putting the wire into the switch, but her trembling hands, and unfocused brain did nothing to help. Pata nahin..she wanted to say, but then, her words dried down on her lips, as he put out his other hand, pried the wire off her fingers, and inserted it into the switch deftly.
He slowly turned her around, and took the switch out of her hand. She stood cornered against the fusebox, as Maan held the lighter in one hand, and inserted the switch into the fusebox using his other hand over her head. She closed her eyes, as his hand almost brushed her face, while he stared at her. He looked at her eyelids, and ran his eager eyes all over her facial features, while working on the fusebox himself. Geet stood there, her eyes still squeezed shut, and her heart almost threatening to burst out of her chest.
He finished plugging the wires, and put his finger on the main switch. Geet opened her eyes slowly, feeling his movements stop, and tried to move away. Maan moved his body closer to her, causing her to stop immediately.
" When I turn on this switch, the lights will be here", he said, in a husky tone, his breath fanning her face, " But, before I do that, give me my answer."
" Aap..woh.. everyone'sab lights ka intezaar kar rahe hain," she managed to say, with great dificulty.
" Aur tum?", he said, moving his hand from the switch, and running his index finger over her forehead, tracing a seductive line all the way down to her lips.
Geet's eyes closed again, as her breath hitched. Her cheeks burned, as blood rushed to them, and her toes curled. Every bone, and every muscle of her body radiated the heat and warmth she felt, almost on the verge of burning her alive. Yet, Maan continued to assault her senses.
" Bolo, Geet, tum kiska intezaar kar rahi thi? Lights ka, ya", he paused, his finger resting on her lower lip, " Mera?"
" Geet, fuse aabhi tak thik nahin hua kya?". Geet snapped, and her eyes filled with fear and panic, as she heard Annie's voice from the other side of the door.
Maan continued looking at her, without wavering his attention. Geet whispered Annie, exactly, at the moment, when she opened the door, and walked into the lawn.
It was pitch dark, and she had a candle in hand. The fusebox lay open, and fixed, much to her surprise. She walked over to it, and hit the main switch. The whole house immediately filled with lights, and everyone inside sighed in relief. Annie blew off the candle, and started calling out, " Geet, Geet? Are you here?"
She sucked in her stomach, as Maan's arm draped over it. With her back, resting against his back, he held her, one hand over her mouth and the other over her waist. Geet tried to wriggle free, but, it was next to impossible. Maan held her, almost crushing all her bones, and the way his masculine hands were wrapped around her femine body, she didn't have enough mental strength left in her to struggle. He spoke in her ear, as Annie called out her name.
" I won't let you go, till you tell me, Geet", his voice was calm, and dangerously passionate, " I don't mind standing here, like this, for the whole night."
Geet widened her eyes, struggling against the hand on her mouth. Annie was calling her out, and getting closer every minute. Geet was terrified, to think, the consequences of being caught with Maan in this position, in her own house. Worse, he didn't care about that. He pulled her closer, pinning her back against himself even more firmly.
" Were you waiting for me? Why did you say, your mind doesn't work when I'm around you?" he urged her again, this time, squeezing her navel.
Geet gasped out, the sound being muffled by his hand. She glanced back at him, with pleading eyes, struggling against his hold. He looked into her panic-stricken eyes, and stared into its depths. She stared back, suddenly forgetting everything. She didn't even realize, when he moved his hand from her mouth, and loosened his hold on her waist. Geet stood there, staring at him, after two whole months.
She felt a lump in her throat, as she realized, that she had not liked him being away. And, so far. He was in England. That's almost the other part of the world, she thought. She was too lost in him, when she heard Annie's voice again.
" Geet! Tum yahaan ho, main tumhe kab se bula rahi hoon", Annie said exasperatedly, and then looked in surprise, at a horrified Geet, " Kya hua? What were you doing alone in this darkness? Lights toh kab ki aa gayii.."
Alone? Geet looked all around her, and was startled to find, that she WAS alone. There was no one else in the lawn except Annie. She had been aghast about being caught with Maan in front of Annie. But, here, she stood alone, without him being anywhere around.
" Chalo, andaar chalo", Annie shook her head, and held Geet's hand, dragging her inside the house.
Heyy Babaji, did I imagine the whole thing? Main itni darr gayii thi, ke Annie ne mujhe'mera matlab hume dekhliya.. lekin woh toh wahaan the hi nahin. How did he manage to disappear like that? Geet was convinced that the whole event was a figment of her sinful imagination.
But, the minute she entered the hall, her hopes shattered. Everyone was busy hugging, congratulating and praising Maan. Annie left Geet's hand, and went to hug her brother, who held her lovingly. But, the look he had in his eyes, when he stared at Geet told her, that she had not imagined anything. Geet shivered, as it hit her, that everything was real. Everything that had happened in the lawn was real.
Maan spoke to everybody, smiled, and replied, but his eyes very rarely left hers. He stared at her with a blazing fire in his irises, one which was capable of burning her down to the ground. She lowered her eyes everytime she felt his heated gaze on her. Her cheeks turned pink, and she quickly escaped to the kitchen, on the pretext of getting dinner on the table.
" Chalo, beta, khana kha lete hain. You must be starving", Rano said, fondly ruffling his hair.
She looked around, and said, " Yeh Geet kidhar chali gayii?"
" Shayed khana lane gayii hain, Rano. Annie, ja jake usski madat kar", Pavitra said, as they all settled themselves down on the table.
Annie nodded her head, and walked towards the kitchen.
