4.The Lunch

"So we were right in our assumption that he is behind all these." Maan asked his brother Dev.

"We were never in doubt there. But there is still no solid proof."

"Maan, you know Arjun hates us, especially you. I think you should think about the proposal and the consequences it will have after yesterday."

"Yes, Maan. The Handas were quite open in their support of us. No one knows Arjun better than us. He would not take that thwarted attempt to humiliate you lightly."

"The woman is absolutely crazy!" Maan exclaimed.

"But a beauty too!"

"Wonder what Meera would have to say about your roving eye!" Maan glared at Yash.

"Hey, I am just married. That doesn't mean I have turned blind!" Yash said sullenly.

"Marriage demands that you need to turn blind, deaf and mute at times! Take it from me, that is the success mantra of most marriages."

"Hear hear! Listen to the gyan guru!"

"We are digressing...Maan I think it is in our best interest that you reconsider. You know however hard we attempt that accident at Ghaziabad has put a mark in our business. It will take time to bring the guilty to light, if we are able to. And that Sasha fiasco. Strong friendships would not come amiss."

"I know bro. But marriage as a business arrangement! It is not something I had imagined."

"Sometimes arranged ones work out more perfectly than love matches. It comes with a lot less expectations and pre conceived notions." Aryan's voice held the bitterness of failure.

"Maan, it is your decision. But while you think about it consider that given an opportunity Arjun is not going to refuse the offer. And will not let her forget that he was not her first choice!"

Dev's words just echoed what he already knew. He looked out thru the window of his office to the one that belonged to hers. He didn't know why she needed to get married though he had his views on it. He would have left the proposal without another thought if it did not involve Arjun. Now by supporting them she had opened herself to Arjun's displeasure. By proposing to him, which he was sure she would despite his warning, Geet would be exposing herself to Arjun's manipulations. They were able to save their sister Dia from his evil intensions barely. But by then the harm was already done. Arjun had succeeded in filling her life with misery. No he couldn't let that happen to Geet. She didn't know what she was getting herself into. Victory was all that mattered to Arjun, for that he was ready to take any measure, however unethical. If she thought the contract would save her she was wrong. The resistance would only add to his interest, add to the thrill of conquest, as it had with Dia. He could still recollect Dia's tormented face and listlessness during those early days. The memory of Geet and her regal ways the night before flashed in his mind. He would not be the reason to break her. There was that flash of colour on her cheeks when she had danced with him, the sparkle of awareness in her eyes. The attraction was there, he couldn't deny it.

He sighed, he would have to do it. She had left him with no choice. Of course there were advantages in marrying her, but he was more concerned about her. Still he will have to be careful that being associated with him didn't make things difficult for her. Once the contract period was over and they went their separate ways, the only impression the social circle had of their darling Handa should be that she had made a temporary error in judgement, like some women did by falling in love with the wrong person. At a last glance at the window he decided to pay her a visit.

He should have guessed she wouldn't waste time to approach the next candidate. From a flustered secretary, who was much unwilling to divulge the information, he had managed to ferret out that Geet was meeting Arjun Sinha for lunch at Imperial international.

Geet walked into the restaurant a bit early, because she liked to be on time and be prepared. She couldn't help but be apprehensive, more so than the last appointment she had for the same cause. May be she was being influenced by Maan's warning. But no matter, she had to do this. It was easy to give advice, but what use was it without a proper solution. And she didn't regret it that the groom she preferred was not interested. She was a business woman, she had to know that deals at times will fall thru. Okay may be she was impressed by him, by his integrity, the variant expressions in those glorious eyes, the upward tilt of his 'm- shaped' lips, the grace of his stride. That did not mean that she would regret that she will never find out for herself if his eyes would smoulder with desire, if those strong arms would carry her as effortlessly as he was able to guide her thru the dance. Now were had those fantasies come from, you were never going to find out anyways as it was a mere contract marriage. Not real. Oh oh...thoughts of him had seriously corrupted her mind, she was hallucinating. She could see him sitting at the table she had reserved for her lunch. What was it with this man that compelled her to make a fool of herself, she almost smiled at the pun. Get a grip on yourself Geet, she admonished herself, you are super imposing Maan's image over Arjun Sinha's.

But the image of Maan remained even after she adjusted her glasses and moved closer to the table. In fact Maan was sitting at the table as if he had every right to be there to foil her plans. Thank you Babaji, Arjun had called to say he was a bit late. That meant she had enough time to confront Maan and sent him packing. Pushing back her glasses and raising her chin she walked towards him, her steps hastened with determination.

"Good afternoon, Geet" he stood up with a perfect smile adding to the beauty of his perfect lips.

"Good after..." years of courtesy made her reply before she caught herself. "What are you doing here, Mr.Khurana?"

"Now, is that the way to greet your soon-to -be husband?" he quipped, drawing the chair for her.

"What?" Geet's mouth dropped open.

"Close your mouth Sweetheart," he touched his knuckles to her chin to lift her jaw and skimmed his thumb lightly along her lips. "And sit down."

"But..." he transferred his hand to her shoulder and gently pushed her down to the seat.

Sitting down beside her, he took her hand in his. "You proposed, I accept." He peered into her face, "Sorry it took me so long to accept."

"But..."

"Come on Geet, I said I was sorry. Now forgive me and accept my yes."

Geet studied him, trying to read the reason for his change of decision. The gentle movement of his thumb on her palm created a diversion making her look at their joined hands. It looked so perfect, her hand looked so delicate and secure in his strong ones. Yet she had asked Arjun Sinha for the lunch date. It was too late to back off. She pulled her hands free from his.

"I'm sorry, Maan . I have an appointment with Arjun Sinha."She tried to keep the regret out of her voice.

"I know. But does he know why you wish to meet him?"

"No, still..."

"Listen Geet, you said I was your first choice and now I have agreed why do you need to look any further? I promise I won't back out. Do we have a deal?" he offered his hand and she took it after a moment's hesitation.

"But what do I tell Mr. Sinha, now?

"Leave that to me..." he smirked and seeing that suspicion entered Geet's mind.

"Maan, what are you up to? What do you have against Mr. Sinha? Why do I get this feel that by this marriage you are scoring points against Mr. Sinha?"

"Me? What can I be planning? You were the one who planned this marriage deal. Oh! Speaking of which, we need to discuss the details."

Now he was evading and changing the topic, she thought as she observed him. She was about to ask him to come clean when he said looking at the entrance to the restaurant, "may be later, our guest has arrived."

She turned to see Arjun walking towards the table. He was talking on the phone with a confident smile but the moment his eyes fell on Maan his expression turned to one of annoyance.

When he reached their table Arjun glared at Maan and asked Geet, "Miss Handa what is 'HE' doing here? I thought we had a business lunch, alone?"

The 'he' was so full of hostility and contempt, Geet was all the more curious about what had went down between Maan and mr. Sinha. Looking at Maan though, she found that he had an expression of bored indifference, which she could bet was feigned to irritate his opponent further. She was not sure how to explain Maan's presence .But Arjun Sinha's contemptuous 'he' rankled her. If she were correct in her assumption Pinky would just have asked for a meeting without giving details.

"I'm sorry Mr. Sinha, I didn't know you assumed we were meeting alone." Her voice chastised him for being free in his assumption. "As for Maan being here..." she was not sure what to say, but didn't need to because Maan cut in.

"Darling, do let him sit down before you give him another shock."

"Oh, I'm so sorry. Please join us Mr. Sinha." Maan captured her hand with his when she was about to offer it to Arjun. Arjun sat down , his expression showing that he was not pleased with the situation. His eyes flickered to their joined hands.

"So you were saying, miss Handa.. " Arjun prompted.

"Allow me to do the honours," Maan looked at her with such open admiration and tenderness that she was at loss of words and could only nod her head in acceptance. He raised her hand to touch his lips to the pulse at her wrist, making her catch her breath. "Thank you, sweetheart."

"MR. Sinha we have an offer for you. We are interested in your land in Hoshiarpur that is adjacent to the Handa's property. Now that the Khuranas and the Handas are entering into a partnership you may find it difficult to pursue your plans for that land."

"Is it true?" Arjun asked Geet , fury making his voice harsh.

"Yes. Maan and I ..." before she could complete Arjun interupted.

"I would advise you to think carefully before you enter into any deal with the Khuranas, especially Maan Singh Khurana. The Khurana Constructions is a sinking ship and Mr. Maan Singh Khurana assailed with scandals."

"And we know someone is working day and night to achieve just that. It would have been so much better if that particular person put in even a bit of his effort for the good his own business than trying to put ours down!"

"Are you accusing me Mr. Khurana?"

"I didn't name any one...but if the shoes fits..."

The server came to take the order, but Arjun waved him aside and stood up. "Look Miss. Handa, I came here at your invitation thinking we were to discuss some business. I have no wish stay here and be insulted by your new found business associate who is a fraud and a womaniser," his voice throbbed with supressed fury.

"Mr. Sinha I apologize for your inconvenience, but I find that I too am not interested in keeping any association with you. A person who accuses someone without really checking the truth of the matter and who spreads rumours about my future husband is not worthy of my time."

"Future husband!" he looked shocked, and then sneered. "Do you expect me to believe that?" he grabbed hold of her hand. "Where is the ring?"

Maan stood up in a flash, "take your hands off my fianc." His voice throbbed with menace.

"Or else?" he countered, though he did let go off Geet's hand.

"Good" Maan smiled and then said dismissing him as if he was of no importance. "Now leave."

Arjun took a step away and then turned back to look at Geet "This is not over. You will pay for this insult. For joining hands with him. "

Maan moved to stand between Arjun and Geet , " do you need a reminder of what I can do when you try to mess with mine?" his voice was deadly with intension.

Arjun didn't need any further prompting to leave. With a satisfied smile Maan turned to face Geet, whom he saw was glaring at him.

"What was that all about?"

"What? I didn't like him threating my fianc, and I told him off. Now sit down and let us have lunch."

Her eyes flared up behind the glasses, "Look here Mister, I am not a delicate damsel who needs a man to shield her. I know how to deal with people who misbehave with me. You didn't have to barge in with your macho threats. Do you get me?"

Her attitude pleased him. It meant that his wife would not be a timid female who would cower at his temper nor would she be intimidated by his brothers. They would have an interesting marriage. He smiled.

His sudden smile puzzled Geet. "I said I do not like you interfering and creating unnecessary scenes. Do you get that?"

"Yes I do." He waved towards the chair, "now can we sit down and have our lunch, while we discuss our upcoming marriage?"

"I will sit down because I think we do need to discuss this, but that does not mean that you have won. I do not take orders from men even from a masterful manipulator who looks like God's gift to women." She sat down on the chair she had vacated.

He gave a cocky smile sitting down beside her, "you think that I am god's gift to women?"

"Of course, you are good looking, wealthy, successful and chivalrous. What more would a woman want? But that is not why I am staying."

"I got that," he signalled the server to approach. "May I know what made you stay if not my abundant charm?"

" I don't wish to create more speculations." She picked up the menu and studied it with utmost concentration. "Also because I am hungry and didn't want to waste my reservation at 'The Imperial'. As it is it is difficult to get a reservation here."

"Are you staying because you want to avoid speculations or you are hungry?"

"After analysing the situation I've decided that having lunch here with you is the best choice I can make." She flipped thru' the pages. "That is all I am willing to accept."

With her full concentration given to the menu in her attempt to avoid looking at him, she missed the soft smile that warmed his eyes as it looked at her. He decided he was beginning to find his bride-to-be utterly irresistible.
