CHAPTER-25
Meri zindagi bhi ajeeb hain'Geet thought with a mock smile, as she draped the lavender saree over her slim, petite figure, and bent down to fix the folds carefully. Maine kabhi nahin socha tha, ke I have to relate the events of my past to someone.. When I left Mumbai the very next morning after that night, I had promised myself, that I will never succumb to any such simmering emotions anymore. Magar, Mk ne aake sab palat diya' Maybe, when I spent those moments with him in Mumbai, they were a sign..a sign that I was with the wrong person.. but, by the time I realised, it was too late..it IS too late. She sat in front of her dressing table, and grabbed the purple eyeliner. Applying it very lightly, she picked up the black one to line the edges carefully, giving her eyes a smoky feel at once. Finishing her make-up, Geet grabbed her cell phone, and sighed loudly.
" Chal Geet Handa' waqt aa gayaa hain", she said out loud, staring at her beautiful reflection in the mirror.

He nodded at dozens of people, waved at even more, and shook hands with numerous. Yet, nothing registered in his usual sharp and alert mind. The party was in full swing. There were people talking about the remarkable project, about his extremely good and talented teamwork with Geet, and the immense level of success and fame garnered by the contract. Yet, he was least interested. He wanted to get home, close every window, and drown himself in his thoughts again. Thoughts that unwillingly comprised only of Geet.
Even as he thought of her name, she appeared in front of him. Dressed in a lavender saree, she knocked his breath off. Pehle kabhi isse saree mein nahin dekha'she looks'stunning'he felt his lips curling slightly, giving in to a mild smile, when suddenly, Geet looked at him, and his expression froze.
" I will not share my personal life with you, Mk., just to prove your theories wrong. Aapko jo sochna hain, aap soch sakte hain," The words pierced through his mind for the millionth time, and his face gained the tough composure yet again. He tore his eyes off her, and looked everywhere else, deliberately avoiding her.
She walked her way through the crowd of people, her eyes only on his. She didn't miss the rudeness, and unyielding stance that eminated from him strongly, and was directed, she knew, only towards her.
" Congrats, Ms. Handa.."
" It's a huge success.."
" How did the work finish so ahead of schedule?"
" You and Mr. Khurana make a great team."
The praises, and comments were unending. But, Geet had her mind and eyes set on something else. Something more important. However, her head snapped at the last comment. She looked at the person who said it, and was surprised to see Mr. Viraj Patel smirking at her.
" I got your message, Geet. Soon, WE'LL be working together as a team", he said, with a grin, and added, " You look hot."
Maan clenched his fists tight, as the words fell clearly on his ears. He saw Geet stare at him coldly, and felt a sharp pang in his heart. She thinks she can protect herself, lekin Patel jaise log kabhi nahin sudhar sakte' pata nahin, yeh kya karegi, when she has to work with him. His mind screamed out to him, before he could think anymore Shut up Maan' don't care'tujhe kya fark parta hain? You can't stick with her for the rest of her life' she pushed you away, remember?
He was standing with his back to Geet and Patel, and conveniently decided to leave. Geet saw him walk away, and a muttering an excuse me, she started moving towards him.
" Geet", Romeo stopped her, " Woh'"
" Kya?" she said, the irritation, and impatience making their way clearly through her tone.
Romeo stared at her in surprise, and replied, " The contract has been finalised. When will you sign it?"
" This is the celebration of the last contract, Romeo", she said, between her teeth," pehle yeh toh khatam ho jayee, kal subha before I leave, main papers office bhej dungi. Now, can you please excuse me?"
Without waiting for a reply, Geet jerked Romeo away, and walked off quickly, holding her saree as elegantly, as she could.
" Yeh Geet ko ho kya gayaa hain?" he thought in surprise.
Geet looked around desperately, trying to spot Maan. The whole party was talking about them, but, not one of the press people had been able to capture a single snap of them together.
She spotted Maan, some yards in front of her, and quickly walked towards him. She called him softly, as he stood with his back to her, holding a drink in his hand.
" Mk".
He clasped hold of the glass even more tightly in his hand, and whipped around.
" Yes, Ms. Handa?" his voice shattered her insides into a million pieces. It was so formal, and so rude, nothing like what she had heard in her flat two weeks back.
" Mujhe aapse'" she started, when he smirked, and said," Congratulations! The project finished so early, you can expect some huge cheques by the end of today."
" I don't expect ANYTHING by the end of today", she murmured, looking at him with her eyes full of sadness.
Maan stared at her, momentarily surprised by her words and reaction. But, he quickly got over it, and said," If there is nothing else, then, I would like you to excuse me. There are other people who'd like to meet me, you know. Everything doesn't revolve around you."
He started walking away, when someone from the crowd said, " Sir, we don't have a single snap of you and Ms. Handa. If you don't mind, could you please'"
People gathered around, and Romeo motioned Geet with his eyes, to take the picture. It was important for them, and could be used as a future reference too. And, after all, the whole point of the project was their teamwork and extremely talented approaches.
Geet looked sideways at Maan, who made no move at all. She slowly inched closer to him, and faked a smile, as millions of cameras snapped pictures ruthlessly. They stood there for a long time, as each magazine and newspapers took their pictures freezing the moment. Maan stood several inches away from her, ensuring that no part of his body touched hers, but, Geet felt a slight tinge of sadness, with his sudden distance from her. She couldn't help remember the night two weeks ago, when he had held her so close in his arms. No one, no man had ever touched her like that. And, no one ever will, Geet..she thought.
Maan tore himself away from her, putting an end to the flashes, which would probably have gone on forever. Music started playing, as couples gathered up on the floor and started swaying to the music. She stared at him, estranged, as he walked away, only to bump into some associates.
" Mr. Khurana, why don't we have a dance? In honour of the success? With Ms. Handa..come on, please!"
He turned around, and glared at Geet, who stood there lost. She made no movement, and as people started urging strongly, Maan suddenly held her hand, and pulled her to the dance floor. He put his hands on her waist roughly, and hauled her close, whispering menacingly, " Don't worry, Geet Handa. This is probably the last time I will touch you."
The song( Guys, the song used here is I Still Remember You by Blackmore Night' I don't know how many of you have heard it, but it's one of my personal favourites..do listen to it, when you picturise this scene I think the lyrics are kinda insync with the situation') started, and the lights dimmed, as they began to sway to the tunes of the extremely calm music.
Geet stared at him, feeling the sharp sting of pain, and hurt, while he stared at her indifferently. She slowly started saying, " I know, you're angry..lekin'"
" Who said I'm angry?" he snapped, spinning her around, and causing her to fall on his chest.
She held herself as graciously as she could in her saree, and said, " Mk, jitna aasaan aap samajh rahe hain, utna nahin hain'"
Maan grabbed her, plastering his back against her body, and bit out," Listen, these are the last few minutes that I am spending with you.. please don't talk rubbish, and leave a sour taste in my mouth."
Geet gave him a long and piercing glance, as they broke off. The music ended, together with the loud applauses of the crowd, while Maan glared at her one last time, and walked out of the party. She stood there, staring after him, and suddenly something snapped in her.
Geet stopped the tears that were threatening to fall out, and followed Maan out of the party. People were busy chattering and drinking, so no one noticed their absence. And, even if they did, Geet didn't care.
She reached the parking lot, just in time to see Maan put the key into the lock. She held his hand, halting his movements, and dragged him to her car. He was too stunned to react, and before, he could register her actions, she was already inside, and opened the passenger door, motioning him to sit.
There was a strange flicker of emotion in her eyes, and that was probably what made Maan settle down inside her car, without any argument. She drove off furiously, as soon as Maan slammed the door shut. He looked away from her, in irritation, not wanting to know anything. His mind stopped working completely, as she continued driving, her hand tightening on the steering wheel.
After what seemed like the longest silent hour of both their lives, Maan jerked up to see that they were in the same place where he had driven Geet after the party with Ranbir Handa. Geet cut the engine, and stepped out into the cold and chilly air of the deserted road, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. Maan climbed out of the car too, and said," Why are we here, Geet?"
" This is the place where I told you one of the mose pathetic parts of my life, Mk. I want to tell you the most humiliating part too, here." She said, quietly, looking straight ahead.
" Yeh kya natak lagake rakkha hain tumne?" he said, extremely angry, as Geet stood with her back to him.
" Natak nahin, Mk. Aaj koi natak nahin' today, I am going to tell you everything, and then, you'll decide for yourself", she said, her voice dangerously low.
They stood silent for some time, as Maan stared at her back, without anything registering in his mind. Geet felt goosebumps rise on her skin, as she closed her eyes and visualized the part of her life she was about to share with the person she fell head over heels in love with. Without knowing whether he will ever be able to understand or reciprocate her feelings.
She sighed and turned around, only to see Maan staring at her strangely. She walked up to him, and said softly," Do you remember the first time we met, Mk?"
He nodded his head in a daze, and murmured, " I can never forget that."
" Me too", she said, lost, and then, continued," Everytime I met you in Mumbai, I can never forget those days. But, that has got nothing to do with you. It all relates to someone else, Mk. Someone who was a very important part of my life."
" Geet, mujhe kuch samajh nahin'." He said, in confusion, when she smiled bitterly, and said," Samajh nahin aa raha hain? Mujhe bhi nahin aaya tha' I also didn't understand when that person made a fool of me, my emotions and my family. He left me alone to face everything, and I didn't understand. I didn't understand that Dev Malhotra came into my life only to leave me alone by the end of the day."
