'Note: So i had originally not intended to extend my OS 'The letter that never was'... it was what it was, a one-shot... then when many people requested a second part, i went completely blank, not knowing how to extend something that in my mind had already got closure... there were some failed attempts at another 'letter' but everything proved futile and the OS became repetitive...
Q.U.E.R.I.E.D.
Geet blinked, taken aback, at the bold red letters flashing cheekily at her. As a frown gathered on her brow, she sat chewing the back of her pen.
She made a quick call to Pinky, "Pinky, is there some issue with the Computer, why is the TS showing up as 'Queried'?"
"Queried?" came Pinky's surprised question, 'What are you talking about? Don't you worry Geet, nobody got a 'queried' this first week, all the bosses know how hard all of us have been working these past days... aur vaise bhi, I doubt whether anyone even spares a second glance. Woh I had come late na that day, I toh just randomly put anything, and no one even bothered,' giggled Pinky, '...but why do you ask, koi problem?'
'No, just that... never mind...' Geet broke off, still trying to make sense of the letters dancing about, trying to... no demanding her attention.
It was a recent addition. The Time Sheet. One fine day, Khurana Construction's global affiliates had decreed that they wanted Time Sheets to be maintained by all employees on a daily basis. So, with immediate effect, one now had to submit to one's boss an account of the hours that went into different jobs. Apparently the global guys wanted to understand the number of man-hours being devoted to different projects and clients in order to calculate remuneration and thus ROI. That was the official reason. The added unofficial reason, as the junta conjectured sotto voce, was that the 'top guys' wanted to also keep a tab on the efficiency and productivity of the employees, and hence had asked for an account of the hours spent in office. After a lot of muttering and grumbling, people had finally started filling it over the last week and submitting it to their respective bosses.
For Geet it was just another item added to her daily to-do list and nothing more. It really didn't affect her life too much. What with the great Maan Singh Khurana breathing down her neck each moment, every nano-second too was well and truly accounted for. Which is why she was even more puzzled at the 'Queried'. I mean you had shirkers who had been racking their brains this past week as to how to cover up for all their daily 'time-pass' in their Time Sheets. And apparently none of them had been queried. And this was a list that included august names like Nandini, Lucky, Sasha, Tasha, Romeo and even Pinky to some extent. Puzzlement changed to chagrin!
It just didn't make sense, and to be honest it was demoralizing and even a bit embarrassing. In fact, Geet thought, slowly swelling with indignation, it was downright unjust, given that she was one of the few who were in the earliest and stayed on till the latest. Indignation and just anger gave her the courage to do what she ordinarily would have completely shrunk from. Taking the bull by the horns! She resolved to seek out in person and question... no demand the reason for this lapse!
