@ Vini: Actually there are all sorts of urban legends related to the meaning/origin of many of the most loved nursery rhymes

For example: Ba ba black sheep is supposedly about taxes, Ring-a-ring roses is about the bubonic plague, Mary Mary quiet country was about a queen under whose reign many protestants were tortured to death, similarly Jack and Jill are about a king who was beheaded and a queen who was later executed...

I am sure google will throw up many more interesting tid-bits
