"Sir, are you alright? I was worried all day but did not want to disturb you. You skipped lunch and tea, too." Geet's rapid talk betrayed her concern. Maan raised his hand to stop her.

"Don't worry, I am fine. Just needed some time to clear my head. But what are you doing so late? Doesn't your bus leave at 6 o'clock?"

"Sir, how can I leave when you are still in office. After all I am your secretary, am I not? I cannot, obviously leave before my boss does."

He scrutinized her face closely. Was her concern only that of a secretary for her boss, or was there something more? She looked down, unable to meet his gaze.

Letting out an exasperated sigh, he asked impatiently "Well, it's getting really late. Can we leave now?"

She looked up at him again and nodding her head, she followed him out.

"I'll drop you at the outhouse. You wait here while I back out the car," he said and without waiting for her response he proceeded to the parking space.

Minutes later they were heading home, Maan at the wheel and Geet by his side. After maintaining her silence for some time, she looked at him, wondering whether she should ask her question of the morning again. Although his eyes were fixed on the road, he could read what was on her mind and he answered her unspoken question.

"He is my younger brother."

"Who?" asked Geet in confusion, not realising he had already read her mind.

"The man who played with your life," he muttered between clenched teeth.

Geet stared at him in shock. "What? Dev is YOUR brother?"

He grimly nodded his head.

She shook her head disbelievingly and asked. "Pammi is your mother then?"

Maan did not resemble either Dev or Pammi, she thought to herself.

He shook his head in the negative this time and replied, "She was my nanny."

Geet was confused again. "How can Dev be your brother, then? If she is Dev's mother and your Nanni, would that not make Dev your uncle?"

He applied the brakes suddenly and turned to look at her to check if she was joking, but she seemed serious.

He muttered, "Pammi was my nanny, not my Nanni. Nanny in English means someone who takes care of children."

"Oh! I see. What about your mother, then?" Her curiosity only grew with every response of Maan.

"I lost my mother at a young age."

"I'm sorry," said Geet sympathetically. "But I still don't get how Dev is your brother if he is the son of the maid who took care of you."

Although Maan was not comfortable discussing his past, he decided to clear her doubts. "Dev is my half brother. We share the same father."

"What about Kaamya? Is she your half sister?"

"No, she is Dev's step sister. Pammi married her father who was a widower."

"How can that be? Was Pammi not married to your father? Is she not your step mother?" She thought she finally worked out their relationships but his answer got her confused again.

"No, she is not."

Geet looked at him in puzzlement.

"My father never married Pammi. It's complicated," he said brusquely not wanting to discuss his past any further.

"Oh!" Geet exclaimed. So Dev was a child born out of wed-lock. She rued the fact that his child will also now be born out of wed-lock. She pushed back the thought and fiercely reminded herself that the baby was hers and hers alone.

In her eagerness to find out how Maan was connected to Dev and Pammi, she had momentarily lost sight of the fact that Maan had just admitted he was related to the people who had ruined her life. She found it hard to believe that an upright man such as Maan could have such a crook of a brother as Dev. She looked up at Maan again and kept shaking her head as if in doing so she can shake off the truth. Her eyes betrayed the pain she felt deep within. How can fate be so cruel as to make the man who has been her saviour all along also be the brother of the man who wronged her? Now what was she to do? If she drags Dev to the courts, would she not also be shaming Maan, as his family's honour would be at stake? But as a woman she needs to ensure that justice is done, so that it would be a lesson not only to Dev but also all the Devs out there who had or intend to do what he had done to her.

Maan could well read her eyes and understand her dilemma and hastened to ease her mind.

"Geet, what my brother and family did was unforgivable. Don't worry, I am with you on this. You know that I have always stood by truth and justice and this time too I will do the same. Yes, I have covered up for my brother's mistakes in the past, but not this time." Maan's eyes were flaming red with fury. "What he did here was not a mistake but a crime, punishable by law. Before I hand him over to you, there is a little unfinished business I have with him. Will you let me finish it?"

Geet was stunned by Maan's outburst and merely nodded her head. Maan started his car again and sped homeward.
