Part 15
Maan drove on for a while, not knowing where to go. He wanted to ask Geet where she wanted to go, but she was still mad about their kiss. Women were so weird and difficult to understand. One minute she kisses him back the next minute she yells at him. What was he going to do with this girl? Then he decided to ask her anyways. "Geet, where do you want to go?"
At first she didn't respond. He asked her again, "Geet! Where do you want to go?!"
"Stop yelling! I'm sitting right next to you. I don't want to go any where with you.", Geet said.
"It doesn't matter if you want to or not. Your spending the day with me and that's final.", Maan declared.
"Oh yeah?, Whose gonna make me?"
"I am. Now either you tell me where you want to go, or I'll take you to an Italian restaurant, which I know you don't like.", Maan said knowing he would be able to get her to comply this time.
"We are not going to an Italian Restaurant!"
"Okay, so tell me where you want to go?"
She thought about it for a bit. She knew he wouldn't take her back home since he was so stubborn. And truth be told she sort of wanted to spend he day with him. Though she would never admit it. "Take me to the beach.", She finally said.
"The beach? This early?", Maan asked.
"Yes, I like the beach.", Geet said with a slight smile.
"Alright, whatever makes you happy.", Maan told her.
Geet smiled at herself. She found it incredibly sweet that he respected her wishes. Even last night when she asked for minimum guest at the wedding, he agreed. It surprised her that Maan of all people could be so caring. But then Maan was always the one that helped her out when she was in trouble. She wished that he wasn't always so tense all the time. Then again his tense nature was what helped her become a independent women. If he wasn't so hard on her, she would have never fought for herself or her baby. It was Maan who had given her a new life. Maybe she should be a little nicer to him from now on. But he was the one who always started the arguments. It also didn't help when her heart began to race as soon as he was near and she became nervous. As she was thinking all this the car came to a stop.
"We're here.", Maan told her. He went around the car to open the door for her. When she stepped out she was mesmerized by the beauty of the beach. There was barely any people there because it was still early. A soft wind traveled through the air. There were small waves that hit the shore. Geet automatically smiled at the sight. She began walking towards the water and Maan followed watching her take in the view.
Geet stopped at where the waves ended on the shore. She let the waves hit her feet. She looked back to see Maan standing a few feet behind her. "Maan, come here. Put your feet in the water.", She ordered.
"No I don't want to.", Maan said taking a step back.
Geet rolled her eyes. She went to him and pulled him back to where she was standing. "Stop being so boring. Can you stop being so serious all the time! Your no fun.", Geet informed him.
"Yes I am.", He said in annoyance.
"Okay lets see how fun you are.", Geet said with a sneaky smile. She took some water in the palm of her hands and splashed it on Maan's face. He glared at her fiercely and clenched his fist. Geet laughed her head off. "I thought you said you were fun. Looks like I was right.", She said through bouts of laughter.
"Okay, Ms. Hoshiarpur lets see how it feels when someone splashes water in your face.". He scooped up some water in his hands and threw it at her face. She shrieked in excitement and kept on laughing. Maan stared at her dumbfounded. Then he began laughing himself. Geet was surprised to hear him laugh. She looked at him in awe. Then he asked what was she staring at.
"Nothing, you should laugh more often.", She told him embarrassed that he caught her staring.
For a while they stood side by side while Geet played around with her feet in the water. Then Geet saw a crab coming out of the water and got frightened so they decided to sit on a big rock a tad far away from the water. At first they were both quiet. Then Geet said, "When I was young my father would sometimes take me and my sister to the city and he would always take us to the beach because we loved it." She had a faraway look on her face. It was as if she was back in the past, reliving the memories.
"Do you miss your family?", Maan asked gently.
"All the time.", Geet responded.
"Don't you want to see them again?"
"I do, but they hurt me too much for me to ever go back."
"Its okay, you have me now. My family is your family. I don't want you to think about things that upset you.", Maan said looking at the frown on her face.
Geet gave him a weak smile. "By the way, you said you had two brothers. Where's your second brother?", She asked.
"I don't know. He left.", Maan answered with anger in his tone.
"Left? What do you mean?"
"I don't want to talk about it.", Maan told her.
"Fine. But you need to stop keeping everything bottled up inside.", Geet said in irritation. Maan didn't say anything. "What's your brothers name anyways?"
"Vicky.", Maan answered. Geet looked at him and thought it would be better not to question him anymore for now. She didn't want to anger him. She wished so terribly to break open the shell she protected himself with.
"So I was thinking that after we're married you can't have anymore late nights at work. To be honest it bugs me when I have to stay late for you.", Geet said trying to make the mood lighter.
Maan raised an eyebrow, "I never asked you to stay behind for me at work, you did it on your own accord. And you can't order me around."
"Yeah, yeah. I'm just saying now you'll have a family. So you can't work like you did before."
"We'll see when the time comes. But I'm glad that you've finally accepted that your going to be my wife.", He said to see what her reaction was to this.
Geet was a little anxious and said, "Yeah, I accepted it. But it doesn't mean anything. Like I said before I don't know if I love you so until I do your going to have to be patient. No wait, that's if I ever do.", Geet said.
"And I will be patient.", he said lifting her chin. "Who do you think I am? I'm not the type of guy who would ever force you into anything."
"Good.", Geet said. "I'm craving some gol gappe, so can we get some?", She said randomly.
"Gol gappe? That stuff isn't really clean or healthy because they sell it on the street stands", Maan told her.
"Well I have a really bad craving right now. And I don't care. It taste good."
"Lets go then.", Maan said getting up. There was a stand right by the beach so they didn't have to go looking for one. Maan stood there watching Geet swallow one gol gappe after the next.
"Why don't you have some?", Geet said offering one to him.
"No thanks.", Maan responded.
Geet rolled her eyes and stuffed the gol gappe in his mouth. The man selling them began laughing. Maan gave him a death stare. He paid the man and grabbed Geet's hand and walked away. "Why did you do that?", he asked her.
"Do what?"
"Feed me the gol gappe!" He said gritting his teeth.
"Because you always say no to everything. You remind me of this boy I used to like when I was in school. He would always deny liking me but I knew he did so I flirted with him anyways. I have to do the same with you, you say no, but I do it anyways because I know you really wanted the gol gappe.", she said with a big smile.
Maan looked at Geet as if she was crazy. "Where in the word did you even get that logic from? Geet I don't speak in riddles. When I say no it means no."
"Oh yeah like the whole time you pretended that I annoyed you, but really you were actually in love with me."
"Geet, you do annoy me. I wasn't pretending that at all."
"I do not annoy you!", Geet yelled, then stormed off down the beach.
Maan shook his head and ran after her. "Geet, I'm sorry.", he said grabbing her dupatta from behind. She stopped and look back at him.
"Let go.", Geet ordered.
"No, not until you stop being angry."
"Okay fine, now let go.", Geet said.
Maan took hold of her hand after letting go of her dupatta and continued walking down the beach. Geet felt uncomfortable at having her hand in his. There was a shock down her spine at his touch. She didn't want to give him the wrong idea about how she felt about him. But he looked so calm and happy that she didn't have the heart to take her hand away and ruin his mood. It was rare to see him in such a state.
He was surprised that Geet did not let go of his hand as they walked down the beach. He decided to make the best of the moment since she wasn't complaining. He wanted to kiss her but knew that she wouldn't approve. He understood that she wasn't ready to take their relationship to the next level. She still needed to realize that she was in love with him. He wondered when that day would come.
After a while it was lunch time so they went to eat. He took her to a Indian restaurant. After having lunch, Dadima called Maan and told him he had to get home to do the clothes fitting today because they didn't have time and to bring Geet along too. Maan was disappointed that he couldn't spend the rest of the day alone with her. So he reluctantly drove home.
Dadima smiled when she saw Maan and Geet enter. Pinky was there helping her with the wedding arrangements. Geet for the first time noticing Maan's home saw how big it was. It intimidated her. She didn't know if she could ever match the level that Maan was on. He probably had rich relatives and friends too. What would they think of her? She was such a plain Jane.
"Oh I'm glad both of you are back. I wouldn't have called you but it seems that we need to get your clothes measurements today.", Dadima informed them.
"Its okay Dadima.", Geet said with a smile. Pinky pulled Geet towards her waiting for the details off her day with Maan. Geet noticed Maan was a little bitter. She knew it was because they got called back early and smiled at herself. He sulked around while the girls talked of the wedding details. After they were done Maan dropped Geet and Pinky at home.
The next few days flew by so quick that Geet's nerves were on the verge of exploding. Plus, being pregnant made her hormones run wild and more on edge. Maan on the other end couldn't have the wedding day come any sooner. He was becoming restless. Dadima and the whole house was busy preparing for the wedding. He got to see Geet a few times. But they barely had a moment alone together.
It was the day before the wedding. The hall was booked, decorations were up, the shopping was done and everything was in place. Everyone got ready for Geet's mehendi. Pinky was helping Geet get dressed. She wore a plum colored saree with a metallic brown flowers around the border. The color suited her very well. Pinky's living room was transformed into a small hall of sorts. Maan and his grandmother arrived. They brought Geet's wedding outfit and shagun with them.
Pinky brought Geet out to the living room to put her mehendi on. Geet looked so beautiful Maan froze for a moment. However he didn't know that Geet was equally shocked in seeing him. He wore a beige kurta with churidaar pajama and a scarf. She had always seen him wear his business attire. He looked breathtakingly handsome. The whole night both of them could not help but keep their eyes on each other. There was a lot of people in Pinky's small house and Geet was becoming impatient with the mehendi. It was taking a long time to put on. Finally the night was over after a lot of festivities.
At last, the wedding day had come. Maan woke up that morning with a big smile on his face.
