How SRK played a bad hockey teacher

By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 9, 2006 - 06:36 IST

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is not the only film that ShahRukh Khan is looking forward to. He is also quite gung-ho about Shimit Amin's Chak De, in which he plays a coach to a girl's hockey team. And the King Khan will be playing the sport after a good twenty years. He hopes his presence in the film does to the national sport, what his presence in the polio campaign did.

Khan recounts a funny experience when he was trying to explain the sport to his son, Aryan and his bunch of friends. The kids had no idea what the game is about. The doting dad was telling the kids that hockey is a game played with sticks and a white ball. Only to find that they were playing snooker in just a while. As we all know, snooker is also played with 'sticks' and a white ball! So the kids thought that they were playing hockey! Much to SRK's embarrassment! Well, what can we say? At least, he tried!

SRK's taking the short-cut!

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is taking the 'short-cut' to success. Well, for an actor who is at his peak of stardom he can take any route he wants, is what we say. What we're talking about is SRK's hot new crew cut. The actor is sporting a short crop for his next film Chak De being directed by Shimit Amin for the Chopra banner. After the emotional saga KANK, the man is into real action-mode; he's playing a hockey coach in the film. Quite a perfect role for him - we've always loved his sporting spirit, haven't we?

ShahRukh Khan in New Zealand

Friday, August 25, 2006

Looks like Bollywood's favourite superstar has really been living out of his suitcase. He was in New York for a good part of the year shooting for Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Then he was in Malaysia shooting for Farhan's Aktar's Don and now in September SRK will take off for New Zealand to begin shooting for Yash Raj Film's Chak De, being directed by Shamit Amin (of Ab Tak Chhapan fame). The film will see ShahRukh Khan as the coach of a girl's field hockey team, and will also feature several new leading ladies. Looks like SRK has become a visitor to India as he is spending most of his time outside of the country

No heroine for SRK?

If sources are to be believed, for the first time in his career, ShahRukh Khan won't have any heroine opposite him in Shimit Amin's tentatively titled Chak De produced by Aditya Chopra. But ShahRukh Khan who is playing a soccer coach for a girls team will be surrounded by not one but eleven girls in the film. Though initially, the makers were toying with the idea of having a leading lady, some alterations in the script put paid to that. The point to be noted here is that at last someone other than the audience has wised up to the fact that Shah Rukh's college and youthful days are finally over.

Model-turned-actress gets big break opposite Shah Rukh

By Aparajita Ghosh

It appeared that model Vidya Malvade would become another forgettable face of Indian cinema. But then, a big break came her way.

Success has eluded Vidya ever since she moved beyond the ramps to acting in films. So far, she has acted in two films – 'Inteha' and 'Mashooka' – both were box-office flops. And just when it seemed that Vidya would not get her foothold in tinsel town, lady luck has smiled upon her.

Vidya has got on a platter a plum role in Yash Raj banner film titled Chak De .

The film revolves around the game of hockey and has ShahRukh Khan playing the coach of a girls' hockey team.

Vidya plays a girl from a Sikh family. Her character in the film is very passionate about playing hockey, but her orthodox parents don't approve of this.

Vidya's character in Chak De reminds of Parminder Nagra in Gurinder Chadha's 'Bend It Like Beckham'.

It is learnt that Vidya has been undergoing training in playing hockey for her role in the film. A training camp has been organized by Yash Raj films in which more than a dozen girls – many of them newcomers – have been participating.

The movie's actors are bound by a legal contract not to speak about their roles or the movie's plot to the media.

Vidya has previously appeared with SRK in a Santro advertisement.

The shooting of Chak De is already said to have begun. The film is being directed by Shimit Amin, who previously wielded the megaphone for Ab Tak Chhappan .

Vidya Malvade opposite Shahrukh Khan in Chak De

By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 21, 2006 - 03:12 IST

Remember Vidya Malvade, the petite actress, who starred in films like Inteha and Mashooka? Finally, she has got her big break. She is starring opposite none other than ShahRukh Khan himself in the Shimit Amin directed Chak De. The film is being made under the prestigious Yash Raj banner.

Apparently, Vidya's role is that of a Sikh girl with strict parents. She wants to participate in an annual hockey tournament but her parents don't approve of it. It's somewhat similar to Parminder Nagra's role in Bend it like Beckham. SRK plays the coach to the girls hockey team.

Vidya did not want to talk about the role as she is bound by contract. But it seems that she went through an intensive two month hockey training camp. Incidentally, Vidya has worked with SRK earlier in a Santro ad.

Meet Shah Rukh's Hockey Girl

by Subhash K Jha

The girl from Bihar is going places. After her near-disastrous debut in the hit comedy Garam Masala things got a little thanda for Neetu Chandra.

But now the skies have opened up for this spunky Bihari wannabe. Not only has Madhur Bhandarkar announced Neetu Chandra for the plum role of the migrant embroidery- weaver eking out a living at the traffic signal in Traffic Signal, but she's also likely to be cast as one of the female leads in Shimit Amin's film on the game of hockey starring ShahRukh Khan, to be produced by Yashraj Films.

For a girl who until a few years ago was just a dreamer from a small town in Bihar, the leap from anonymity to a film with the Yashraj Films banner is a dream come true.

"I wouldn't be able to comment on Shimit's film. But yes, I've auditioned for Shimit. And I've started practicing my hockey. I guess it's every girl's dream to do a Yashraj Film. If it happens to me, I'd consider myself unbelievably lucky.

Right now I'm looking at Madhur Bhandarkar's Traffic Signal as a new beginning. When I heard that he was looking for someone like Smita Patil I thought I qualified…

Not that I can compare myself with her. But I felt I fitted into the physical description of the role. Madhurji screen-tested me several times over a period of almost two months before I was on."

Now Neetu can't believe her luck. "It's almost like being born again! I showed Madhurji bits of my Kannada film Godavari which is ready for release in May. In that I sport a traditional Indian look.

And look at the coincidence…my director in Godavari is Shakeel Kamala who's also a National award winner like Madhur Bhandarkar. I guess I'm really lucky to be working with directors who have proved themselves both commercially and critically."

She admits her first Hindi film Garam Masala didn't get her career going. "But I've no regrets. I was a newcomer. I had no one to guide me. Not that I want to sound like I had to struggle… But as a new girl in Bollywood who couldn't even speak English properly I think I managed for myself.

In Garam Masala I got to work with experienced talented people like Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar. Even John Abraham was far more experienced than me."

Now Neetu looks forward to plunging into Traffic Signal. "My mother who stays with me and I have been praying constantly ever since we heard the announcement. My father is in Delhi. But I touched his feet on the phone. Not just my parents, I want to do all of Bihar proud."

Madhur Bhandarkar is very pleased with Neetu's performance in Traffic Signal. Neetu says she identifies with the character. "I can understand how it feels to be a migrant in a big hostile city trying to live with dignity. I've been there."

SRK starrer CHAK DE INDIA has real hockey players

Bollywood Trade News Network

CHAK DE INDIA directed by Shimit Amin starring Shahrukh Khan and 16 other girls has hockey as its backdrop. All of them have been trained by professional coaches but the fact that King Khan has been a great hockey player (in his college days), will definitely work as an added advantage. The buzz is that Aditya and Shimit have roped in some real life hockey players and some models also. Aditya will also have a hockey coach and a physiotherapist throughout the making of the film.

Shahrukh plays a hockey coach and is sporting a cool bearded look in the film. The girls are being put through a rigorous exercise regime and all their activities are being shot to be later telecasted in a reality show format. The script is written by Jaideep Sahni who has written for films like BUNTY AUR BABLI earlier.
