Film : Dhoom 2
DIRECTOR: Sanjay Gadhvi
ACTORS: Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra
Mirror Rating : * * *

Mayank Shekhar

It's the sort of return of a 'blockbuster' as a franchise that you would expect it to be. I wasn't too sure why or how Gadhvi's first film (Dhoom, 2004), to which this is a successor, proved to be the massive commercial success that I hear it was.

The first obvious bet could be the electrifying Tata Young track (Dhoom Machale) that, for months after, I'd hear blaring out of car stereo systems on the few free roads that you can still zip across in late-night Mumbai. Also, it's not certain if the excessive and sudden Indian, urban lure for monstrous, smoke-less, two-tyre machines preceded Dhoom, or did the film entirely propel the craze.

Yet, in Hollywood mainstream, which is targeted toward the same audience as this film is, hot women and hotter wheels have forever counted as formula with a fair strike rate. This one is as shamelessly a derivative of that genre as Hindi films may ever get to be; as robust an inspiration as Third World movie-budgets will allow them to be. So no complaints on that front at all.

But for a climax sequence, Dhoom 2 almost entirely does away with motorbikes of the first installment, as much as it gives lesser thought to recording a catchy soundtrack to glue some of its stupendously shot stunts, and scenery set-pieces together (the songs in fact appear as roadblocks to what could've been a more seamless process).

The film doesn't need to do away with the plot though — there wasn't much of it in the first part; there isn't much, and doesn't need to be in the second either. The story-line is merely representative. If anything, the makers this time seem more willfully disrespectful to the diktats of physics and logic.

Most won't mind, even as they watch Hrithik's 'A' racing a police helicopter, on his roller-skates, traversing the South Mumbai traffic. The cops couldn't think of trapping him with a barricade on the road instead. There are many other sequences that you could compile on a common compendium called the 'blockbuster clichs'. This is stuff that only happens in the movies, and sometimes we just love them for it: a successful heist in a supremely-guarded museum that hosts a crowning jewel, or a particular precious diamond; startled onlookers in a crazy action sequence that we never get to see…

If this is a question in your mind, I think, as a stylized all-action no-brainer, Dhoom 2 is not just bigger, but way better than its predecessor. The crucial difference the recruiters have made with this unabashed star-vehicle is Hrithik, the super-hero-like protagonist, or antagonist, as it were. In a haphazardly defined role of a one-man international heist operator who appears with no background information, the actor lends depth, pizzazz, unflappable energy and charm to a character where none exist; we're not even sure if the motiveless burglar is a villain in the first place. Yet, he works, and I suspect, so does the film, when he's around.

He is chased by a bunch of cops (Bachchan, Chopra, Bipasha Basu), and an undercover 'plant' (Rai; sensuous clothes alone cannot heat up a cole-slaw; the true 'Bond woman' is Bipasha here).

The screenplay however leaves scope for the side-kick in the plot (Chopra) to walk off with the film; he almost does, so endearing are the character's dialogues and the comic timing, you will find yourself responding to his madcap antics.

The anticipated result is a wonderfully crafted mall product; much of it goes well with the pop-corn. This is more or less what I felt the posters had promised me, they just about meet those expectations. Be extremely wary of the hype though.

The movie is nothing compared to the hype created about it...same old storyline...doesn't keep you on edge...you know the thief's going to get away all the time until the climax arrives...there were no big twists or surprises

The songs were very disappointing...just the title song with Hrithik was watcheable 👏 👏 ...and also the others with Hrithik were coz of his dancing(belive me,yo have to watch this movie again just for his dance 👏 👏 👏 )

Acting wise,I'll start from the least-

Bipasha-Didn't need her...made no sense...her character was cut from a serious cop runnin after abishek to an annoying girl not knowing how to speak hindi 🤢

Abhishek-Had no role...didn't have any powerful diolouges...seriously looked bad...i actually felt bad for the guy when close-ups of him and Hrithik were being shown together...you could compare it so easily 😆

Uday-I actually liked him...he adds humor to the movie...and yes,he can act it out well 😃

Aishwarya-Her english dialouges come out sounding very fake...didn't suit the role very well but it was nice seeing her in a different role like this...looked gorgeus.

Hrithik-This MOVIE is an all-n-all his film. The guy just blows you away with his looks,dancing,acting,stunts...everything!!!...can't express it better...you could watch this not-so-thrilling movie any number of times just too see every movement of him 😳

I would rate it 2.5/5(All is for Hrithik)

B.O. update: 'Dhoom 2' earth-shattering opening

By Taran Adarsh, November 25, 2006 - 03:32 IST

The Chopras have yet another reason to rejoice!

Their new venture DHOOM 2 has embarked on an earth-shattering opening from East to West and from North to South. The response at every centre, whether big or small, is phenomenal [100%], which means that the first weekend business will be record-breaking. The opening is at par with KRRISH, the best opener of the year and also the biggest hit so far [except Mumbai circuit, where LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI is the No. 1 hit].

The audience response is excellent as well. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai are being appreciated the maximum, followed by Uday Chopra.

Bronze With The Best

By Subhash K Jha

Dhoom 2

Starring Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Uday Chopra

Rating: ***

Clever… very clever. That's the impression you come away with from this sumptuous package of gloss, glamour glitter... ... and an oomph quotient that starts at the neck and goes to the naval.

It's the region above the neck and below the waist which Dhoom 2 occupies effortlessly, fluently and virilely. If you've seen the first instalment of Dhoom(and who hasn't?) you would know Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra carry forward their characters. And that's not an easy thing to do.

Abhishek is saddled with an aura of solemnity while everyone else has a rolicking time. The others whip a dhoom. Abhishek is clouded in gloom.

Make no mistake. Dhoom 2 is about letting your hair down as far as it can go. The carnivalesque climate is carried all the way to Brazil where the sweaty tropical mood is imbibed into the characters as they play a strangely ambivalent game of cat and mouse.

Yes, there are the law-enforcers and the law-breakers. But how do we tell them apart? Certainly not by the glamour quotient which is applied to the antagonist Aryan(Hrithik) and his moll Sunehri(Aishwarya) far more intently than the cop-hero Jai(Abhishek) and his sidekick Ali(Uday Chopra) as they go about their law-enforcing antics in the spirit of a chic comic strip.

And if you add Bipasha's double role to the heady brew , you've got a film that's the equivalent of a glossy calendar.

The film moves from Mumbai to Brazil in undulating movements of yes-yesssssss and no , there are no 'nos' in the know-it-all flick that fuses furious action and svelte skin-show in a mix that leaves you dizzy and slightly breathless.
Movies were never meant to be so heady, unsteady and ready to rock at the drop of a hat….not that anyone is in a hat, except Aishwarya(God bless her stunning soul!) in one song where her Barbie-doll movements drive us krazy with a 'k'. Just to be kool!

Crazily paced and with superbly crafted moments of aerial and grounded stunts, all centering on the one and only Mr Roshan, Dhoom 2 serves up a bigger brighter sexier and sassier gourmet's dish than the earlier film in the series.

Director Sanjay Gadhvi doesn't try to please the audience. The optical orgasm happens on its own volition, creating for us a sense of renewed and engaging deja vu.

All the chutzpah and chirpy glamour from the first film is back. Plus loads of oomph. The storytelling careens from downright clownish courtship (Bipasha and Uday Chopra are like an new-age Aroona Irani and Mehmood) to the outright passionate.

Aishwarya and Hrithik are arguably the best-looking couple the Hindi cinema has ever seen. That they LOOK and vibe so beautifully together is one of those cinematic occurrences which no one can control or predict…least of all the director whose vision in an adventure-caper of this scale, depends on everything from an actor's lighting to the light-man's mood.

The light falls just right on each actor. I can't think of one film since Sholay that has showcased a bunch of top-notch actors in a more flattering light. Bipasha's absurd double role as a no-nonsense Mumbai cop and Brazilian oomph –girl notwithstanding she's in fine shape.

So is Abhishek, lending to his solemn-cop's role a kind of edgy intolerance that makes him just the right foil for the "perfect thief" played by Hrithik Roshan

The film belongs to Roshan…make no mistake about that. What an actor, what a dancer! What a screen presence! …In a vital love sequence with Aishwarya where the international thief has to show the desperate anxiety of a lover whose heart has been stolen, Hrithik's controlled inner and outer movements create a world of strange and stirring impulses for his unmoored thief-with-no-brief character.

Hrithik, and the rest of the charismatic actors, move from one continent to another in a flourish of flamboyance.

To its credit the film never goes over the top in pursuit of stunts and thrills. The series of heists are implemented in a spirit of twinkle-eyed mischief by Hrithik . When the jewel caper turns into an intense love story you marvel at the actor for taking the hot plot from one level of engaging diversion to another without losing the basic pattern of rippling rhythms that govern the narration.

The Ash-Hrithik chemistry goes a long way in putting the film's mood of whooping delight into a humane perspective. The two anti-socials look into each other's smouldering eyes, whisper about love life and food to each other, play backetball together and even exchange an intense kiss.

At the end of it all , we're left gasping for breath. Hrithik , Ash and the rest of the cast look bronzed and sweaty… the heat is a killer.

Of course there have been other more well thought-out capers. But has there ever been a caper as good-looking as Dhoom 2? Has Aishwarya ever looked and acted more authentically in any of her masala films? Has Hrithik ever given more substantial proof of his magnetic star power? Has Abhishek had a bigger chance to serve as a foil in a film where's his male co-star gets the author-backed role?

The answer to all the questions is a big no.

Dhoom 2 is a slick flick with aerial and ground stunts that flatter Hrithik's star presence , only to deceive the audience into believing it's all very easy.

This is a film that makes the big-screen spectacle look jovial and casual. Look underneath. There's a method to the smirking madness. The grueling glamour of a stunt-driven drama has never been more fluently placed before us.

Dhoom2- My review

Watched it in a jam packed theatre( unusual for Abu dhabi) on Thursday night ...the enthusiasm in the crowd was evident..

If I were to name one person that shines in the movie it has to be Hrithik...his stunts are awesome and so are his disguises... he is definitely a star in teh real sense of the word!!!

Abhishekh Bacchan is more like a sidey and looks a little run down compared to the rather suave Hrithik! His bearded look and bent shoulders are getting a lil boring now...no complaints with his acting tho'...however when you compare his fight and stunt sequences with Hrithik's he is way behind!

Aishwarya Rai...well she does look a lil different and nice in her very western look and teeny weeny clothes ( I could almost hear all the guys in theatre going droool)...but gosh the moment she opens her mouth...such terrible dialogue delivery...and she lives upto the image of being an ice maiden on the screen...not even for a second I could see her as Sunhari...she was just Aishwarya Rai...perfect and cold!🤢 and the love for Hrithik's character never showed in her eyes...unlike Hrithik who potrayed the vulnerability of a man in in love!

Bips is looking fantastic! in a double role!!..she rocks as a cop and as the bimbette on the beaches of Rio!!! And my personal opinion is that atleast in this movie she is a better actress than the ex Ms. World!

Uday Chopra gets the maximum claps and laughs for his role of lovable Ali...infact you look forward to seeing him all the while!

I found the plot and execution to be massively cliched and too inspired by hollywood...Dhoom 1 was more gripping that way!

Overall it worked for me...my advise...go watch it for-

  • Hrithik's performance
  • Bipasha on the white sands of the Rio beach!
  • Uday's cute tapori language and funny fantasies!

Hope you like my review!!!

Now coming to the flip sides.....

1)The movie seemed to be compartmentalized....the first part was full on action and slickness, and the post interval part was made to be a typical insipid romantic masala film(Redeemed thankfully by Hrithik's screen presence and the HR-Ash chemistry)....It would have been much better had they spaced it out well 😕

2)The Uday and Abhi intro scene,IMO,was unnecessary..Just to prove a point that Uday has become a cop and assists JAi,there was no need to waste those good 10 odd minutes,it could have just started with Bipasha's intro scene….

3)Ash was introduced after a good 45-50 minutes, which I felt was odd...HAd that abhi-uday intro scene where the nab a drug peddler been chopped,Ash could have been introduced earlier

4)Hrithik-Ash love didnt burgeon in the most convincing way..Just a few scenes, and BINGO,they are in love 😕 ..Perhaps Aryan could have shown to take more time, more scenes

5)Bipasha's character was half baked...It seemed as though she was shoved into the script for the skin show and the bikini gimmick in Brazil 😕 ...She definitely looked hotter than Ash,but her Monali act was excruciating, and the Monali Ali liaison was insufferable 🤢

6)Aryan's character loses focus midway,He becomes this love crazed man, which I felt was a tad odd 😕

7)Abhishek looked BAD!Now I know he had to gain weight for Guru, but he really cant escape the flak that he would garner till Guru releases...and If God forbid Guru turns out to be a damp squib, then Poor Poor Abhishek 😭 ....Looking a bit fat is OK,but the dressing sense 😕 ...Abhi was BADLY dressed(UGLY Floral shirts and T shirts)! The moustache loooked inconsistent!

8)Ash looked a bit overawed by Hrithik 😕

These were the downsides...

Box Office Report-25th November 2006 15.00 IST

Dhoom 2
New
The film witnesses the greatest opening ever seen in recent times. The North is just mind boggling as many theatres witnessed overcrowding and 110-125% collections in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. There have been release problems in Delhi/NCR but collections were 100% due to it being played on fewer cinemas. Overall the reports are mixed for the film but the craze and appreciation for Hrithik Roshan in the film is immense which may enable the film to become a massive hit.

Apna Sapna Money Money
2
Semi Hit in Mumbai. Above Average to Average elsewhere.

Vivah
3
Extremely strong all over as most circuits except Mumbai record better second week collections than first week. Week two is 5.11 crore.

Don
4
Still strong in West Bengal and Nizam. Overall HIT

Trade Talk-25th November 15.30 IST

DHOOM 2- Trade is jubilant

The initial figures coming in for Dhoom 2 are extraordinary. Many theatres have already declared collections for the whole week as all tickets are gone. It may be premature but the trade is already talking about record gross and for the trade, record gross means distributor share which is 45 crore for Gadar and in order to achieve that Dhoom 2 will have to do an unbelievable 80 crore+ nett. Only time will tell if this can happen but at the moment its celebration time for YRF because at places the film has collected 1 lakh on first day when capacity is just 85,000. The film will break every first week circuit record except for maybe Delhi/UP due to release problems in Delhi. Even the long standing Bihar record of Indian(2001) will go as Dhoom 2 opens bumper there on a record 55 cinemas.
