Dhoom 2 – mini review
Posted by Akashusa

In 2004 the Indian film industry released a one-of-a-kind film called Dhoom. One-of-a-kind because fast-paced action films with super bikes tagged along with a grunge look were a rare scene to see in a Hindi film.

Today, Thanksgiving 2006, the makers are back. The movie worked in 2004 and may very well worked again two years later with the sequel – Dhoom 2.

In case you didn't watch the original Dhoom, here's a refresher: Two cops, Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) and Ali (Uday Chopra) were assigned together to tap on and capture the don of all bad guys, John Abraham. Although this may sound like your typical run-of-the-mill all out action film, the film had a fast pace. The end result: a super roller coaster ride never witnessed before in Indian cinema.

Dhoom 2 doesn't exactly start off where the original Dhoom ended. However, viewers would able to see the transition and parity of both films. Jai and Ali get promotions, a sign of goodness after they got the job done in the first Dhoom.

(No plot to be revealed; just performances and a few mentions here and there).

Dhoom 2 is definitely an upgrade of Dhoom. The action stands out. In fact, some of the scenes look realistic – a big plus for a Hindi film. The acting, among the returning stars Bachchan and Chopra, have improved drastically from the first film. The dance sequences, especially the title song and Crazy Kiya Re', are sure to bring the house down.

But the biggest plus going for the sequel is the addition of Aryan. Played by Hrithik Roshan, Aryan is your no-nonsense villain. For sure an upgrade of John Abraham. Aryan looks tough from start to finish. Aryan looks slick from start to finish. He gets all the girls, he gets all the attention. Put it this way – no Hrithik, D2 would be just your typical masala action film.

Dhoom 2 also features the hot sizzling bodies in Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu. Although their roles are limited, they do enough to spice up the silver screen. Rai, for the first time, sports a two piece. Basu, probably the better actress than the two, looks hot in her "crazy" outfits throughout the film.

Roshan is the clear winner of Dhoom 2. He is bound to get all the best villain awards for this film. Bachchan is next followed by Basu. Rimi Sen, in a special appearance, serves justice. Rai's looks will be the talk of the town for the next couple of days and that's about it from the former Ms. World. Chopra is not so loud this time. In fact, some of his comedy scenes are the highlight of the film.

Overall, Dhoom 2 is an all-hype film. It's a big film. Running under the Yash Chopra banner, the film is ought to take a flying start at the box office. The film is bound to attract the youngsters, but don't be surprise if aunties and uncles make a run at the cinema to watch this change of phase in Indian film cinema.

Once again, the film is purely watch able and entertaining. Enjoy the ride while it lasts.

As far as here in New York City, the movie officially releases tomorrow opposite three Hollywood biggies: De Ja Vu, Tenacious D and Deck the Halls. Dhoom 2 may suffer some state side business due to these biggies, but expect the crowd to start rushing in throughout the weekend.

Bipasha ne John ko crazy kiya re.

The John-Bipasha jodi is only getting hotter. We all know about how hung-up they're on each other. Yeah, in spite of all those rumours and controversies that keep hitting them so often, this pair is really going strong. In fact, of late John can't stop drooling over his lady love. We'll tell you the reason, and believe us it's filmi, very filmi. He watched Dhoom 2, and apparently Johnny boy couldn't get his eyes off Bips. He's all gung-ho about her performance and makes no bones about admitting it too. Talk about falling in love all over again, this jodi is heading that way.

Dhoomday' Or Doomsday?

By Ali Peter John, MovieTalkies.com, 23 November 2006

The Dhoom-2 fever has swept the city of Mumbai. The film is one of the first in several years to have the kind of advance booking at all the 45 odd theatres in which it is being released tomorrow (November 24). The fever was expected but the enthusiasm it has aroused specially among the youth is unprecedented. The multiplexes are the prime targets of the distributors and they are all having sold out shows for the first three days. Shyam Shroff, the leading distributor and the man behind a chain of multiplexes in Mumbai says, "I expected something like this to happen but what is happening is far beyond my expectations. The initial draw has been out of the world. We are having any number of shows at all the multiplexes in the suburbs and every show is a houseful show during the first three days and the pressures are growing on us. I have not seen such a craze in a very long time."

Yash Chopra, the head of Yash Raj Films who first thought of making the sequel to Dhoom seemed to be overwhelmed by the response. "I had a very strong feeling that the film would work as a sequel and I am glad that my feeling is bearing the kind of fruits even before the release. I only hope we have lived up to the expectations of the people who I always believed are the real judges."

Sanjay Gadhvi, the director of the original and the sequel is 'a little nervous and very excited.' Gadhvi said, "I had told Yashji and Adi that I would make the sequel only if it was planned on a bigger and more ambitious scale. They gave me more than that. They gave me three new and big stars in Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu. They gave me the freedom and the facilities to use a range of wide and even wild thrills which I am sure have never been seen in Hindi films. They gave me untouched locations where Hindi films have never been shot before. What more could I ask for. I have literally put my entire being into the making. I was aware that I had to create double the impact with the sequel. I have taken all the care to do just that. My actors have gone out of their way to come up with their best. The music is catching up. The marketing, the promos and the release have been planned like only the Yash Raj banner can. Now it all depends on what the audience, the judges of our fate will say on Friday afternoon."

The audience outside the multiplexes seem to be waiting to catch their chance to see what this Dhoom is all about. They are talking about the battle for supremacy between Hrithik and Abhishek. There are great expectations from both but there are greater expectations from Hrithik who they imagine must have done the kind of action and thrills which would be as good as those in Krish or even better. They are also waiting to see the new face and body display of Aishwarya, which have been creating a great deal of curiosity after watching her consistently in the promos. They are expecting a daring Aishwarya in this film for the first time.

There is a section of the soothsayers who say the initial for the film will be very good but the staying power is still under suspect. However, the number of the optimists is higher than the pessimists. The excitement among the audience is so strong that the management of the multiplexes have gone in for increased security measures. And the most surprising thing is that the black marketers who had gone out of business have staged a come back outside most theatres. Will it be Dhoomsday or doomsday? That is one question every section of the industry is asking and the answer lies just a few hours away.

'Dhoom 2' is more than bikes and bikinis

23rd Nov 2006 22.00 IST
By N. K. Deoshi

Not just bikes, bikinis and nail-biting chases, Sanjay Gadhvi's movie Dhoom 2 promises a perfect recipe for adrenalin rush.

Gadhvi says he wanted to make a well-balanced, wholesome entertainer that has something new and interesting happening after every five-six minutes to keep the viewers absolutely glued to the screen.

Made at almost three times the budget of Dhoom , the sequel features some stunts and actions hitherto unseen in Indian cinema. And all these stunts have been done by the actors themselves.

Sample these: Hrithik Roshan flying down with a parachute and landing on a moving train. Or Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik free-falling into a gorge from a height of 500 metres. Or Bipasha Basu hanging on a steep wall 100 feet high. Or Abhishek Bachchan riding a jet-ski on a rough sea. Or Uday Chopra driving a bike at great speed inside a tunnel. And these are just a few vignettes.

Besides the bikes, there are bikinis too, courtesy Ash and Bips. This glamour combined with grit makes for a heady mix for the viewers.

But more than anything, 'Dhoom 2' will break two stereotypes. Ash and Hrithik, who have so far done goody-goody roles only, now step on the wrong side of law to pull off some of the most daring robberies in the film.

Hrithik says he got hooked to his role the minute Sanjay Gadhvi narrated it to him. He also makes it clear that his stunts in 'Dhoom 2' are far more daring than what he did in Krrish .

Action, stunts, romance, robberies, drama, music and a few surprises, this Yash Raj film looks poised to live up to its name.
