Masand's Verdict: Go Dhoom 2

Rajeev Masand

IN HOT PURSUIT: Dhoom 2 is certainly bigger than the earlier film.

Bigger and better - that's what we've been promised from Dhoom 2, this week's big new Bollywood release, director Sanjay Gadhvi's sequel to his hit 2004 entertainer.

It is a cat and mouse chase once again but in the new film, police officer Abhishek Bachchan and his faithful ally Uday Chopra are in hot pursuit of an International thief, one who steals the queen's crown from a running train in Namibia, a coveted diamond in a Mumbai museum, and some precious coins from an archeological display in Brazil.

Straight out of those good old James Bond films, the thief in question Hrithik Roshan is a cucumber cool conman who uses everything from fancy gadgets to unique disguises to get his job done.

He finds a partner in fellow thief Aishwarya Rai with whom he's planning a big theft, but the question is, can he trust her completely?

There's absolutely no question about the fact that Dhoom 2 is bigger than the earlier film, packed as it is with sensational set pieces like Hrithik's breathtaking skydive in the film's opening scene, or that almost poetic bungee drop with Hrithik and Aishwarya, or even that thrilling bike chase in the tunnel which ends with them gliding over a helicopter's blades.

In all fairness, it's not just the action that's gone four notches higher, it's also the sheer energy of the film, and by that I mean the stunts, the gadgets, the songs, the locations, almost everything.

It's what I call "all-stops pulled out entertainment." The makers of this film want you to suspend your sense of disbelief and just go along for the ride, which you're absolutely willing to do, but having said that, there are some things that are just not excusable.

I'm willing to believe that Hrithik has all these fancy gadgets like this remote-controlled robotic device that can move across the room, climb up a table and steal a heavily guarded diamond, but do you really expect me to believe that not a single person in that room would notice this remote-controlled device moving all over the place?

Not a single one of those dozens of security guards under whose feet the damn thing is moving? A bit much, don't you think? You have to understand, if you're modeling your film after the James Bond pictures or Mission Impossible, then you have to find a way to make the unbelievable look believable. That is the challenge.

One of the big reasons I enjoyed Dhoom 2 so much is because it's like the ultimate wet dream.

It's almost as if the makers of this film secretly went into the heads of young men and women, listened to their most private thoughts, their most ultimate fantasies, and then decided, "let's give it to them." Wink

I mean think about it, Bipasha Basu sizzling hot in a two-piece string bikini, Aishwarya Rai in micro-mini shorts, tight tank-tops and tall boots, Hrithik and Aishwarya playing basketball in the rain in their black ganjis, and then the piece de resistence, a nice hot smooch between Hrithik and Ash even if there wasn't any tongue involved.

In many, many ways, Dhoom 2 is a perfect example of what's seriously wrong with big-budget Bollywood movies.

Because while lots of money's been spent on hiring big stars, making them look good in gorgeous clothes, filming at exotic locations, shooting hit songs, and designing all these breathtaking stunts and action scenes, the most basic, the most fundamental, the most vital element - the script - has been completely ignored.

The screenplay of Dhoom 2 is embarrassingly amateurish because nothing really happens in the film. Honestly, it's just a string of fabulous action pieces, with some romance, some comedy and a few songs thrown in for good measure.

All the embellishments are in place but where's the story? I'm going to make my favourite comparison here - you're making a biryani and you've got the meat, you've got the spices, you've got the salt and the potatoes, but you forget the rice.

You can't make biryani without the rice. And there, you can't make a movie without a script.

Of the film's cast, Uday Chopra as the lovable sidekick who wears his heart on his sleeve manages to raise a few laughs, but because the script doesn't really allow him to find his feet, his jokes become repetitive and you feel like he's got way too much screen-time than his character deserves.

Perhaps the opposite is true of Bipasha Basu who oozes sex appeal without any help from the script but she's just not given enough opportunity to make her presence felt.

Aishwarya Rai, meanwhile, is all sexed up and everything from her tan make-up to her costumes are designed with the intention to make your jaw drop.

Abhishek Bachchan, sadly, doesn't hold up but the blame for that must go to the script again for reducing him to a mere supporting player.

But if there's one reason you must watch Dhoom 2, then that reason is Hrithik Roshan. He holds the film together and even manages to take your attention away from its many flaws.

Hrithik is one of those rare actors who's not only abundantly talented, but he's also blessed with a presence that's electrifying. With the grace of a dove he throws himself into the film's many challenging stunt scenes - skydiving, sand-surfing, scuba-diving, roller-blading, bungee-jumping - and he does it all so well.

Whether it's in the action scenes, or the songs, whether he's romancing Aishwarya or jumping off a cliff, it's hard to take your eyes off him.

He is, quite simply, the heart, the soul and the spirit of Dhoom 2. So it's unabashedly entertaining and it's two-and-a-half hours well spent but I want director Sanjay Gadhvi to promise he'll spend more time working on the script if they decide to do Dhoom 3.

Review

Story

A (Hrithik Roshan) is the master of disguise. He plans heist operations, executes them perfectly all over the world, and leaves his trademark signature at the place of theft. It is Jai's (Abhishek Bachchan) job to trace and nab A. Jai, his sidekick Ali (Uday Chopra) and beautiful Shanoli (Bipasha Basu) form a trio to trap A. The rest of the story is all about the hide and seek games between A and Jai.

Artists Performance

Hrithik Roshan: Hrithik Roshan's performance is super. The action choreography for Hrithik's gadget-frenzy character in this film is far superior to the choreography composed for the supernatural powerful character of Krrish. Hrithik's dance to the title song is superlative. He imitates Antonio Banderas in the sword heist scene. The superb style and grace he brings to the character of the super thief is beyond all expectations.

Others: Abhishek Bachchan sports a rugged look. His performance is fine, be it delivering smooth punch dialogues with nonchalance or teasing Ali with a deadpan face. Uday Chopra is cool as the witty but inept cop. Aishwarya Rai is good but looks tired in this film. Her performance in the bullet-shoot episode is very good. Bipasha Basu adds glitz to the cast with her effortless performance. Rimmi Sen is limited to a couple of scenes in the film to incorporate bigger names like Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu.

Technical Departments:

Story - screenplay - direction: The best thing about the film is style. The presentation of the main leads is fabulous. The story is good. Story, scenes and techniques in this film are a mixture of several Hollywood heist films. Direction is good. Screenplay is adequate. However, the plot has not developed well. Some of the characters (Bipasha Basu & Rimmi Sen) in this film are not well etched. The duel between A and Jai is great, but could have been shown more convincingly. The emotional bonding between Ash and Hrithik is not well established.

Other departments: Music of the film is good. Background music is exceptionally good. The music director has used a lot of Mexican music. Dialogues are effective. The graphics in the film are amazing. DI (Digital Intermediate) is perfect. Cinematography is superb. Editing is crisp. Artwork is great. Locations are extravagant. Makeup work for Hrithik is of world-class standard. Production values are grand.

Analysis: The way the three heroes are introduced in this film is cool. The first half of the film is impressive. But the second half concentrates more on the love angle between Ash and Hritik. There are some dull moments in the second half. However, the stylish climax makes up for everything. Dhoom 2 is stylish, savvy, grand, peppy and modern. It is probably one of the most stylish films ever made in India. A must see!

Dhoom 2 : Movie Review

24th Nov 2006 23.00 IST
By N. K. Deoshi

Cops and robbers stories never got so exhilarating in Bollywood. Sanjay Gadhvi's film Dhoom 2 does not give you a moment to sit back. With its stylish look, incredible stunts and tongue-in-cheek humour, the movie keeps you constantly on the edge of your seat without any safety belt.

You can skip a roller-coaster ride for a movie like this. And you won't miss a thrill. High speed chases, free-falls, pyrotechnics, death-defying stunts are all rolled together to give you goose bumps in every single reel of this 2.45 hr movie. And a lion's share of credit for this goes to Hrithik Roshan , without whom this movie would have been a soulless body.

Story is not of as much importance to this movie as individual sequences revolving around robberies. As Hrithik Roshan ingeniously pulls off one impossible heist after another, you realize that the movie is not just about brawns, but brains too.

Sanjay Gadhvi makes his intentions clear in the very opening reels. In a desolate desert in Africa, an anonymous thief, a mysterious Mr. A (Hrithik), pulls off a daring robbery on a moving train. After the loot, as he sandboards through the golden dunes with the booty safe in his bag, the introductory titles roll.

Back in Mumbai, Ali ( Uday Chopra ) has graduated from a mechanic to a cop. He and his senior Jai Dixit ( Abhishek Bachchan ) work together to bring criminals to book.

Enters ACP Shonali Bose ( Bipasha Basu ), Jai's college friend, now a sharp shooter who believes in gunning down thieves rather than catching them. She is an expert on the thefts by Mr. A, a mysterious, nameless thief and a master of guises whose real face none has seen.

Jai and Shonali team up to catch Mr. A on his next robbery in Mumbai. But the elusive thief slips through their fingers after stealing a priceless diamond. That's not it. Mr. A throws a challenge to the cops by announcing his next target.

It is on this robbery Aishwarya Rai is introduced as a masked thief who impresses Mr. A. Sunehri (Ash) makes an impression on the international thief and soon wins his trust. Mr. A introduces himself as Aryan and takes Sunehri under his wing.

But there is another side to Sunehri. As she and Aryan go to Brazil for their next robbery, Jai and Ali keep close on their trail. Riveting action and stunts follow as Jai and Ali try to stop Aryan from his next crime.

It is better not to judge 'Dhoom 2' by Hollywood standards. Seen purely as a product of Hindi cinema, 'Dhoom 2' turns out to be a movie that redefines the action genre in Bollywood. And once again it is Hrithik Roshan who plays a pivotal role in stretching this quotient. The actor just keeps getting better at doing unimaginable stunts. He does sand-surfing, roller-blading, bungee jumping and much more with the mien of an expert. Besides the stunts, he stays in complete control of his character and convincingly brings out the emotional sides of Aryan in the second half. The movie truly belongs to him.

Abhishek Bachchan looks rugged playing the no-nonsense cop but is never able to rise above Hrithik's presence. Bipasha Basu looks really hot and the camera scans her anatomy and assets at regular intervals to add some titillation to the thrills.

On the other hand, Aishwarya Rai doesn't look least bit sexy despite wearing a variety of skimpy dresses. The gorgeous actress is not able to carry herself comfortably in revealing outfits. Perhaps she is a beauty that ought to remain covered.

Uday Chopra is the only source of humour in this action-packed thriller. Although his comedy is generic, the flair and ease with which he does it makes his character very entertaining.

Rimi Sen has a brief and forgettable role of Jai's pregnant, cribbing wife.

'Dhoom 2' isn't void of faults, and some of them are so glaring to be overlooked. Bipasha's character Shonali is inexplicably dropped at the interval point and another character, an identical twin called Monali, is introduced in Brazil. And both Shonali and Monali have little significance to the movie's story.

Secondly, after a series of intelligently conceived robberies in the first half, the last robbery in the film turns out to be lacklustre and without any thrill.

Thirdly, Pritam's recycled and rehashed compositions that only evoke yawns and encourage you to go out for some refreshments.

Fourthly, the romance between Hrithik and Ash lacks the real spark.

All said, this Dhoom turns out to be bigger, better and bombastic than its prequel. It is essentially a cops and robbers story with some glamour and humour thrown in. In this tussle between cops and thieves, it is Love that wins in the end. After all, Aashiqon ka janaaza hai, zara Dhoom se niklega.

Watch it for Hrithik.

Dhoom2

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Bipasha Basu, Uday Chopra
Direction: Sanjay Gadhvi
Rating: **

Clearly, the mandate given was BIG. Big action, big babes (make that bigger babes, assuming Esha Deol and Rimmi Sen in the earlier one could be called babes) and big locations. What obviously was not mentioned was an airtight script.

And so, Dhoom 2, the ultimate cops and robbers caper does not bother with a script. There are situations sure, some exciting, some mundane, but no attempt is made to make it cohesive.

Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu provide the va va voom factor while Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan take care of the thrills. Goa and Mumbai are replaced by the exotic and scenic Namibia and Brazil but alas... the spontaneity and casual entertainment of the first shot in Mumbai, Goa and on the expressway are completely missing.

Shooting off from the hugely successful Dhoom, Abhishek Bachchan is an Assistant Commissioner in the Mumbai Police and Uday Chopra his sidekick, a motorcycle mechanic. Bipasha Basu, from the same college batch as Abhishek and now a cop too is transferred to Mumbai. Just as you thought things might heat up between the two, Rimmi Sen, hugely pregnant is transplanted from the first film. That puts paid to romance.

But desires have to be fueled and this task falls on the well toned shoulders of Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, except that they don't have enough chemistry between them to fill a laboratory beaker. Perhaps, that explains why Aishwarya talks non-stop while a smooch between them is in progress.

Comparisons may be odious but since every sequel inherits the goodwill of its predecessor, it must be made here. Dhoom was a film you went to with no expectation only to be enthralled by the bikes, the caper and the fun. With Dhoom 2, expectations are sky high, but barring a few high octane thrills, all provided by Hrithik, you are left insatiated.

Musically too, Dhoom 2 isn't a patch on the first film. Indeed, the most interesting song continues to be Dhoom machale dhoom and with Hrithik's fluid rendition twice, once solo and then for the end titles with Aishwarya, he easily makes it one of the more interesting aspects of the film.

Neither Bipasha Basu nor Aishwarya Rai contributes much by way of storyline. While both dress minimally, Aishwarya emits thanda vibes. Bipasha looks hot and is by far the better actor. Abhishek Bachchan is hampered by the fact that his character is grim and morose most of the time and he can't horse around.

It is left to Hrithik Roshan to hold the film together which he does with a bankably efficient performance, be it as an actor while doing high octane action or dancing. He wears multiple disguises; chances are you will miss the first of them.

If Sanjay Gadhvi made the heart beat faster with Dhoom, with Dhoom 2 he brings it to a stop. How could anyone go so wrong?

The telegraph - kolkata india

Only Hrithik robs hearts
- Sequel opens to full houses but fails to set screens ablaze

PRATIM D. GUPTA
SCRIPT-SAVER: Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 2

He did not emerge as the twist in the cops-and-robbers tale at the end of the film, but John Abraham still got the loudest cheer at the packed first-day-first-show of Dhoom 2 in town. Despite Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu, the bad guy of Dhoom sent the otherwise sedate INOX (Forum) crowd into a tizzy when he appeared in the Kabul Express trailer before D:2.

Calcutta went all out to welcome the second Dhoom film on Friday but clearly missed John. "It's like a Munnabhai sequel without Circuit," grumbled an audience member.

As the replacement robber, Hrithik does dance like a dream and his stunts have a lot of steam, but that's not enough to save the script, or rather the lack of it.

Sure, the most-awaited film of the year opened big — huge, actually, with most screens sure of 100 per cent occupancy for the weekend — but there was no missing the murmurs of disappointment as the reels rolled on.

And worse, sniggers and boos greeted the hottest scene of the film — Hrithik and Ash in a liplock. Yes, she does surprise by her first real on-screen kiss — no wonder Abhishek goes through the film with a perpetual frown — but just like her half-baked character, even her kiss is half-blown.

If the babes disappoint — Ash looks hot but acts cold; Bipasha in Baywatch gear has precious little to do either in Mumbai or in Brazil and speaks all of two lines in Bengali — the bikes are missing in action. The mean machines, which made Dhoom the movie of 2004, do not hit the screen till the climactic chase.

But by the time the word of Dhoom 2 not matching up to Dhoom spreads, the box-office would have been won and another sequel planned, thanks to the 1,200-plus prints released worldwide.

"The Friday opening has been tremendous in cities and suburbs alike and the first weekend is sure to go house-full everywhere," said Kushagra Jalan, the film's east India distributor. "That's three-fourth of the battle won, since we have released the film so wide."

Review: Dhoom 2
Nikhat Kazmi
[ 24 Nov, 2006 2330hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK >

Dhoom 2 (thriller)
Cast : Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Uday Chopra
Direction : Sanjay Gadhvi

Man o man! Just look at what these men can do! They fall from the sky, roller-coaster down super highways, stroll across speeding train tops, get fast and furious on their mean bikes, bungee jump off precarious cliffs and simply take your breath away. Why? Because they do all this without losing a hair off their hunky heads and make all the girls sing 'Crazy kiya re ...' And when they are not showing off their mard-no-dard skills in the adventure sports department, they rip off their shirts and showcase their rippling bods on the dance floor, making the girls scream 'Crazy kiya re !' all over again. And yes, it ain't the gaga gals alone who are reeling; the guys are whistling too.

Because Dhoom 2 brings to Bollywood its first full blown action flick where the adrenalin just keeps pumping and jumping and the daredevilry almost outstrips Hollywoodian heights. The wannabe 'mards' are wonderstruck!

More importantly, with Dhoom 2 's sequential splendour (it's truly a sequel that carries the charisma forward), Bollywood gets its first fundoo film franchise: Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan), as the diehard cop and his archrival, the perfect chor who made a dashing debut with John Abraham in Dhoom 1 , sky-rocketed with Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 2 and might just explode with Shah Rukh Khan (isn't he chor No.3) in Dhoom 3 .

Needless to say, the highlight of Dhoom 2 is its brilliant and breathtaking action sequences. Kudos to stunt director Allan Amin for making the Mission Impossible series seem kid's play. With it's opening sequence itself — a near-impossible heist in the African desert — the film sets the pace and simply never lets you slip away from the edge of your seat. Each time you think you might just sit back, that mindblowing ball of energy (they call him Hrithik Roshan) explodes in your face with some new bit of super-human stuff, like blasting in and out of manholes, leaping up and down cliffs, vrooming ahead at unimaginable speed on his bike which almost becomes a body part for him or displaying his unrivalled dancing skills. Yes, Hrithik's the hero of the show and you know it when even our proverbial ice maiden sheds her icicles for her first screen kiss. She simply can't resist him and sizzles with passion whenever she spots him. As Sunehri, the small time thief who joins our ace robber as his partner, Aishwarya pitches in her hottest portrayal till date. And together, the Hrithik-Ash pair ends up as an almost perfect screen pair, leaving nothing to be desired. Can we have some more tangos together, puhleeze!

But remember, there's Abhishek too. Now he's an actor who holds his own even if he doesn't have the author-backed role. As the 'karela' cop-with-no-social-graces, he's irrestible and a charmer too. Watch out for the confrontation sequence between the chor and the police. Ekdum magic! And when it comes to the action cuts, he displays a cutting edge too, even as Uday Chopra recreates his Nagpada tapori chutzpah as Ali, the soft sidekick, with consummate ease. So who's left? Aah Bipasha! Looks great, brings back the bikini to Bollywood, and gently slips into the shadows as a pretty accessory. But who's complaining. It gets too hot anyway with the Ash-Hrithik cavortings on the dance floor, in the basketball field, in the living room, on the job...

Story? Do we really need one! Let's say it's just a simple cops and robbers tale that ain't simply done. The thrills, the chills and the testosterone twists will keep you humming: 'Crazy kiya re !'

Time to take a back seat, Mr Bond. Because Bollywood's Dhoom is bigger, better and goes beyond...
