Chapter 3 – Masty

When Armaan Malik walked into Sanjeevani Institute, it was hard not to stare.

Dressed in casual jeans and a white T-shirt, he had his iPod plugged in his ears, his movements being very eye-catching. He'd be tapping his foot, moving his head, or snapping his fingers. Even as he stood waiting for the elevator, he didn't stand still for a moment. It was very addictive, and it made everyone move, even if it was the slightest movement of their hands.

Soon, he was traveling up to the second floor of the institute. Ignoring the curious stares from doctors and nurses, he looked around until he spotted what appeared to be the locker rooms. Walking in, he frowned upon finding it empty. He got his answer once he checked his watch. "2 more minutes! Crap!" He quickly found his locker and tried his luck at the lock. Darn. He couldn't even remember what he did with the combination. He put on his lab coat and began to walk away when he noticed a pin on the floor.

He grinned in delight and quickly grabbed the pin to push it into the lock. Once he'd achieved his goal, he threw the pin aside and quickly stuffed his locker. "45 seconds" he murmured as he looked at his clock again. This time, he made a mad dash towards nowhere.

He found himself bumping into a pretty middle-aged lady. "Ah! I'm soo sorry ma'am!" he said politely, quickly getting down on his knees to help pick up the utensils he'd made the poor lady drop. "It's okay beta" the lady replied. Her warm smile made him smile back, and he couldn't help himself from saying his next few words, "You have a beautiful smile"

Surprised at first, the lady giggled and politely thanked him in response. This handsome young boy seemed very sweet and mischievous. His beautiful eyes held a special glint that made one feel warm inside.

"You seemed in a hurry? Is everything all right?" she inquired. He then realized where he was headed and muttered something incorrigible while slamming his forehead with his palm. The lady finally noticed the lab coat and badge he had on. Armaan Malik. Ah, he's one of the new interns. She smiled and put a hand on his shoulders. "You're a new intern na? Here, come with me." She seemed really sweet, and so without asking anything, he quietly followed her.

As they walked, she introduced herself. "I'm Padma Gupta." Not recognizing the name at all, Armaan politely smiled back. "Armaan Malik." They exchanged a few more words until they were standing right in front of a conference room. Padma paused and knocked on the door. "Come in" someone snapped. The sharp voice startled them. Padma gently opened the door and entered. The owner of the sharp voice was apparently a pretty, short lady standing at the head of the table while the rest of the interns sat there. Her frown turned into a warm smile as Padma walked in. "Good morning ma'am." Padma smiled back and returned the greeting. "Dr. Kirti, may I speak with you for a minute?" she asked. The short lady excused herself and headed towards Padma, making Armaan realize that Dr. Kirti was the senior doctor in charge of them.

Padma and Kirti exchanged a few silent words, and then, after giving Armaan a subtle 'thumb up', Padma left the room. Dr. Kirti gave Armaan an annoyed look and asked him to take a seat. "You must be Armaan Malik then?" she asked. "Yes ma'am" Armaan replied, taking a seat next to a tall young man. He could tell he'd get in big trouble if he tried to flirt with this one. "Good" She made some marks on her tablet PC and then turned her attention towards the rest of the interns.

"Welcome to Sanjeevani Medical Institute. I am Dr. Kirti, the senior doctor and intern monitor. I will assign you your duties and monitor your progress over the year. You will be contacted with the pagers that are being passed around. You should always keep your pagers with you in case of an emergency. If you loose these pagers or don't respond to any pages, there will be high consequences. So I expect you to keep them with you at all times." The interns passed the pagers around. Armaan took this opportunity to look around at his fellow interns. They were all unfamiliar faces. Near Dr. Kirti sat a tall slender girl. She was pretty, but there wasn't much softness to her face. She appeared very sharp and conceited. A pretty, innocent-looking woman was seated next to her. His eyes fell upon her face. She had this simplicity to her, and her face seemed to be glowing as she conversed with Dr. Kirti. He slowly moved his eyes to the people sitting next to him. The tall young man seemed quite familiar. But he wasn't able to get a good look at him for he was conversing with the beautiful young woman sitting next to him.

This lady really caught Armaan's eyes. She was dressed in a simple white shalwar kameez, and her skin seemed to be glowing as well. Armaan rubbed his eyes and looked at her again. Wow, seems like female doctors aren't that bad after all. The chicks here are quite hot. He turned to Dr. Kirti and thought again. Minus Mrs. Gabbar Singh. .

***

Ridhimma was really excited to meet the patients and start working. As her fellow interns conversed among themselves, she choose to opt out and get friendly with Dr. Kirti instead. Even though it seemed as if she were listening to Kirti and her lecture the whole time, she'd also been looking around at the people she had to work with. Besides her and Anjali, there were three other interns; two being males and one being female. The female, like herself, was dressed in a conservative shalwar-suit, and was amiably chatting with the handsome young man next to her. The handsome young man was the one she'd seen in the locker room earlier. He'd seemed pretty absent-minded, and she'd been too nervous to chat with anyone. Next to him sat the guy that had walked in late. Armaan Malik.

She'd heard her parents discussing the new interns to Sanjeevani, and she recalled her dad's praises on Armaan's impressive profile. As good as he might be, he seemed like a pretty careless guy. His eyes met hers and she quickly blinked and looked away. Way to space out on his face Ridhimma.

A knock on the door silenced everyone. The door opened, and in walked her father, Shashank Gupta. She proudly watched her father authoritatively walk in and stand at the podium placed at the head of the table. He stood there and introduced himself before starting on a speech on the existence of Sanjeevani and the work atmosphere. He closed off his speech with staff expectations. Warmly welcoming the interns to the hospital again, he excused himself for a surgery.

Kirti gave the interns a stern look as they began to chat again. She began assigning the duties, and the interns finally got to know each other's name. The tall gentleman was Azaan Khan, and the lady seated next to him was Afreen Hasan. Once the duties were assigned, the interns all stood up to follow Kirti as she gave them a tour of the hospital.

***

Ridhimma and Anjali had taken the tour several times before, and so both didn't pay much attention and chose to interact with others instead. Ridhimma walked closer to Afreen, and warmed up to her as soon as she gave her a warm smile and greeted her. Both girls hit it off well, while poor Azaan felt left out as he was sandwiched between the two girls newfound friendship. He spotted Armaan walking ahead of him and slowly moved forward to walk by his side.

Armaan took off his iPod headphones once he was greeted by Azaan. "Hi, I'm Azaan" Armaan smiled back, "Armaan" Azaan asked him about the music he was listening to, and soon they were chatting about their favorite music and similar interests.

Anjali looked around to notice the two boys and two girls chatting attentively. She narrowed her eyes and decided to stick up to Kirti in the meantime.

part 2 was really good
afreens charachter is really sweet iliked the way she helped azaan out it showed what kind of person she is who is always helping others out.
i can actually imagine azaan being confused.it looks like anjali is the only one who isnt intrested in talking to the other interns.

Part 3 was amazing i really liked the way u introduced armaan into sanjeevani and the way padma helped him out.it looks like afreen and riddhima will be great friends the same with armaan and azaan

I really like the way u write because u write everything in detail and the way u describe everything i could actually imagine it taking place.

Chapter 4 - Pehla Nasha

As soon as the tour ended, the interns all headed off for their duties. Armaan and Azaan were in the Children's Ward, Ridhimma and Afreen were in the emergency ward while Anjali, smug on not needing a partner, was placed in the AIDS ward.

**

The Children's ward was an unusually quiet place. All the children were placed on their respective beds, staring off at the ceiling, quietly playing with their toys or simply sleeping. Azaan and Armaan entered the ward and glanced at each other. Armaan raised his eyebrows at Azaan who returned the same gesture with a shrug. The room consisted of about 10 parallel beds, with an empty passage in the middle.

Azaan spoke up, "I'll take the right half, and you take the left"

"Sounds cool" Armaan replied. He walked over to the first bed. There sat a girl, playing with her doll. She didn't acknowledge his presence as he stood next to her bed, checking her reports. Aamna Nasser. 8 years old. Aplastic Anemia. Armaan put down the reports and turned to her. "Hey!" he said cheerfully. Aamna looked up and gave him a silent nod of acknowledgement, soon returning to her dolls.

"I'm Armaan! And you?" he asked, hand extended. Aamna huffed and put her doll down. Crossing her arms in front of her she looked up at him again. "Why? Did the reports not say it? Or were you too busy checking me out?" Taken aback, Armaan could only stare back at Lil Miss. Attitude.

He quickly recovered and gave a modest reply, "Well, maybe I was. But you weren't suppose to know that. In fact, I was suppose to flirt a bit and then ask you for a date, but you don't seem the type." He made an upset face.

Aamna began giggling, "Tussi baray mazaki ho, baray mazaaki" she replied, total Kajol style.

"Your Punjabi?" Armaan asked, surprised.

"Uff!" came Aamna's reply, followed by a smack on her forehead. "What should be done about you boys! All stupid I tell you Polly" She seemed to be talking to her doll. After fixing up her doll's hair for the hundredth time, she looked up at Armaan again, "You never watched Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham? You disappoint me handsome."

Armaan was having fun with this little girl and her flirting-type antics. "Forget me. Accha tell me, why's that kid staring at you?" he asked, winking as he pointed at the kid mentioned with a head tilt.

Aamna stuck her chin up in the air and looked at the kid. "Oh that number 4? He's another one of those fida boys. You boys I tell you, know nothing about being subtle."

"Number 4? Oh, as if you girls were very subtle in such matters!" Armaan replied, automatically defending boys.

"Yea he's bed number 4, keeps staring at me man. And about girls being subtle - of course we are! You want an example? I got an ek dum jhaakas example. See that doctor there?" she asked, pointing at Azaan. Armaan nodded, really interested. "He's handsome. Yet very distracted. I've been checking him out all this time, and he hasn't even noticed."

Armaan gave her an 'I'm impressed' look and did some check-ups before moving onto the next patient. One by one, he went through all the kids, a talkative bunch that kept him entertained the whole time. When he got to his last patience, a boy with the name Gappu, he finally asked why everyone was so quiet when left alone. "What do I tell you Armaan bhai! That BIG SPIDER has shut everyone up! Threatening to take away all our toys and give us big injections if we make noise."

"Spider?" Armaan asked, naturally confused. He looked around, "where? I don't see one" Gappu rolled his eyes. "She's TOO BIG to be on the walls." Armaan turned back to him. "It's a she? How do you know that?!"

Gappu dramatically threw his head on the pillow, abruptly getting up right after. "There! She's here. Now, tell me, does she look like a he to you?" Armaan looked at who he was pointing at.

"Ohhhhhhh you meant Sister Lovely?!" Armaan asked, feeling foolish. Gappu nodded and started ranting about how mean she was. Armaan decided the kids needed some masty, impossible with Gabbar and 'Pink Spidey' (the latter being his nickname for Sister Lovely) around.

***

Afreen and Ridhimma worked together in the emergency ward, letting the senior doctors tend to the more serious cases. Since there were less emergencies that day, there day wasn't quite eventful. Well, until they had to deal with their last patient before lunch.

They were just about done with all the patients when the ward boy came in, pulling along a stretcher which held a little girl. This little girl was Minnie Sharma, a patient with leukemia. She'd had a sudden attack and was wheeled in.

Afreen and Ridhimma worked on her case together, not leaving until she was finally breathing stably.

Afreen caressed the little girl's hand and watched her sadly, while Ridhimma, a bit tearful, went up to her and slowly kissed her forehead. It was always so sad to meet someone with such cancers, especially little kids who had so much to live for.

Breathing deeply, Afreen slowly let go of Minnie's hand and grabbed her stuff, ready to leave. She turned around to see Ridhimma still standing above Minnie, looking at her sadly.

Afreen walked over to Ridhimma and slowly put a hand on her shoulder, comfortingly. Ridhimma turned around and looked at her sadly. Afreen gave her a comforting nod and whispered, "Let's go eat"

Ridhimma nodded, and, giving Minnie another light peck on her forehead, left the room with Afreen, both girls discussing the case.

***

Anjali's day wasn't any better than the other four's. The AIDS ward was a depressing place, with all the patients having given up on life. She couldn't stand their depressed faces and pessimism. Not being the sensitive type, she didn't express her pity in any way, working professionally the whole time.

She was halfway around the room when she heard some commotion. She turned around to see a young guy in doctor attire, singing to a few of the patients, who were beginning to smile.

"Zindagi Aik Safar Hai Suhana,

Yahan Kal Kya Ho Kisnay Jaana?

Maut Aaani Hai,

Aaayegi Aik Din,

Jaan Jaani Hai,

Jayegi Ek Din,

Aisi Baaton Se Kya

Ghabrana,

Yahan Kal Kya Ho Kisnay Jaane

Zindagi Aik Safar--"

"Excuse me" came the strict voice. Oh ****! Dr. Kirti's here was Atul's first though. With his eyes shut fearfully, Atul Joshi turned around, ready to face the wrath of the devil himself. Herself, he mentally corrected himself. Wait no that makes her the devil's wife. Or sister.

Now he was just muttering to himself. Anjali made a weird face and shook him out of his reverie. "Excuse me Mr..??"

Atul opened his eyes to see a tall, slender young doctor staring at him incredulously. "Wow"

"Suniye Mr. Wow," Anjali continued on as if Mr. Wow was the most common name on Earth, "you are causing too much commotion, the patients need rest."

Atul shook his head, "Mhm. First off all, it's Joshi, Atul Joshi" He flicked his hand over his hair, filmy style. "Secondly, these people need happiness, they get enough rest sitting in here. Music cheers up sad souls."

Anjali despised those who spoke against anything she said. "Look Mr. 'Joshi, Atul Joshi' this is a hospital and not a concert arena, and you are disrupting my patients--"

Atul corrected her, "They're my patients."

"They're mine" said Anjali, angrily.

"No, they're mine" Atul replied stubbornly.

"Mine!"

"Mine!"

"Mine!"

"Mine"

"Fine! I mean mine!! Urgh!" Anjali felt like pulling her hair out.

Sister Lovely walked in just then, "Kya hua Anjali ji?" she asked.

Anjali replied, "This stupid patient is getting on my nerves, I think he ran away from the psychiatric ward."

"We're in the AIDS ward, and I'm standing right here Anjali ji" said Atul, making a confused face.

"I know YOU are, but you don't belong here!" Anjali replied, frustrated.

"Who are you to decide that?! Kya tumhare baap ka hospital hai? Pata nahin doctor kisnay banaya is ko" said Atul, getting back to his patient.

Anjali huffed and turned to bump into Sister Lovely, who had been standing there, completely smitten by Atul.

"Excuse me Sister Lovely" said Anjali, trying to get away.

Sister Lovely just stood there, staring at Atul work, her hands folded under her chin, eyes in dreamy mode.

"Sister Lovely!" Anjali said a bit louder, trying to her the nurse's attention. But Lovely was in her own dream world…

Her in a pink sari, Atul in his doctor attire, holding hands and frolicking on distant hills….

"Sister Lovely!" Anjali screamed. Sister Lovely came out of her trance and looked at Dr. Anjali.

"Ji Anjali ji?" she asked, smiling.

"Uff, kuch nahin" said Anjali, angrily pushing past her as she headed off to lunch.

Sister Lovely just made a face and continued staring at Atul. Her Dr. Atul.

***

Armaan and Azaan ordered sandwiches and sat down to eat, discussing their duty in the Children's ward earlier. Armaan had just asked Azaan a question when Ridhimma and Afreen both entered the canteen. Both girls were looking around for a place to sit when Azaan blurted out, "Afreen!"

Afreen looked his way, and smilingly lead Ridhimma to their table. Armaan, confused at his answer, repeated, "Afreen? Your patient's name was Afreen?"

"I heard my name, what are you guys talking about?" Afreen asked with pretend suspiciousness.

Azaan blushed and murmured to Armaan, "Sorry man typo."

"Typo?" Armaan asked, even more confused.

"I mean mistake" said Azaan, shaking his head and mentally slapping himself. He turned to the girls and Afreen introduced them to Ridhimma.

The boys both nodded and returned her hello, taking turns introducing themselves.

"I'm Azaan, Azaan Khan" said Azaan, shaking her hand. Ridhimma smiled back at him.

Then Armaan extended his hand, "And I'm Armaan, Armaan-"

"Malik" Ridhimma completed his sentence. Armaan nodded and smiled, "And how do you know Miss. Ridhimma-?"

"Gupta" Ridhimma replied. "And I heard Dr. Kirti say it earlier"

Azaan teased her, "She said mine too, itni jaldi bhool gayi"

Ridhimma smiled at his teasing tone, "Nahin, aisi baat nahin hain, I wasn't really paying attention then, but Armaan's late entrance--" she trailed off and everyone got the point.

"Gupta" Armaan repeated. "Are you related to Padma Gupta?"

Ridhimma hesitantly nodded. "Yea, she's my mom."

"Cool, she's very sweet!" Armaan said politely.

Ridhimma didn't get a chance to reply for Azaan and Afreen both spit out their coffee's at the same time. Both turned to each other and laughed at their reactions. Finally recovering, they turned to Ridhimma.

Afreen asked, "You're PADMA GUPTA'S daughter? You own this place!"

Ridhimma nodded, a bit embarrassed still.

Armaan, who'd been confused as always, turned to Azaan, "Padma Aunty owns this place?"

Azaan nodded, "Yea, she's wife of Shashank Gupta, the head doctor"

"Nice" said Armaan. "Is that even legal?"

Ridhimma angrily turned towards him, "Why would that be illegal?"

Armaan replied, "Well if you own this place everyone's gonna stick up for you, you'd obviously get the good duties and not have to stick up to Gabbar"

"Gabbar?" everyone asked simultanteously.

"Yea, uh, Dr. Kirti" Armaan replied.

"Wah! Kya naam rakha hai!" said Atul as he joined them. Introductions were made again and they all turned to Armaan now,

"So you were saying?" Ridhimma asked, attitudishly.

"I was done" Armaan replied in the exact same tone.

Afreen and Azaan gave each other looks. To break the tension, Azaan offered Afreen more coffee and both took the chance to escape.

Atul, being slightly less intelligent, didn't take notice for he was too busy staring at the plants.

"Wow Ridhimma, your dad's so cheap, these plants are fake!"

Ridhimma had had enough. "Atul tum bhi?! ARGH Mein jaraahi hoon!" she said angrily, grabbing at her stuff.

"Nahinn! Ridhimma ji, ghussa na keejiye, warna aapkay pita gi humsay naraaz hojayenge aur bahar phek denge" Armaan said sarcastically.

Atul followed, "That too, and you know what happens when you are angry, your blood pressure gets high, and when your blood pressure gets high-"

He blabbered on and on, not realizing that Ridhimma had already left. He turned to Armaan who had his iPod headphones back on and was moving with the music.

"Ab tere kya hoga Atul?" he thought. He walked away, singing to himself,

"Jab Rulaana Hi Tha Mujhe,

Toh Phir Hasaya Kyun"

"Arrey yaar, in logon nay to hasaya bhi nahin, wrong song Atul, update your song list." He walked out of the canteen, muttering to himself.

Azaan and Afreen laughed at him, and then turned to face each other. Azaan looked into those light brown eyes of her and found himself drowning into them, both stared at each other as time seemed to stand still…

Armaan walked off out of the canteen, walking towards the right while Ridhimma walked towards the complete opposite end of the hospital.

Atul sang to himself, bumping into Anjali and eventually ending up into another argument with her.
