Part 27

Mukti stared at him, her eyes wide. It's him' she thought, close to whimpering, It's him' Mukti wanted to break down crying right there, in the hallway, not caring for anyone that was around. But she couldn't. Not with her tainted past standing in front of her, no way. She gulped down the sobs and tears she was yearning to extricate and tried to look tough.

M: What are you doing here?

Guy: Is this the way u greet me? Oh come on Mukti! Come here and give me a hug! Besides I came all this way just for u! (He held his arms wide for an embrace)

M: No. Never! I'll never come near you. All this time, I was trying to get away from u and now you want me to come close to you? Ugh no!

G: (Putting his arms down and walking towards her) Yeah' that was so sad, when I found out that you left to run away from me. (Now standing in front of her only 2 inches apart) For days I felt destroyed'shattered'but then I realized it didn't matter whether u wanted to be with me or not'I want you'out of every girl in this world, the only one I've ever desired was you'and I'll get you! Besides Jay always gets what he wants. (Now leaning close into her face) Your mine Mukti! You can run as much as you want but I'll find you. (Touches her cheek with his finger and breathes in her scent) You can only be mine'

Just then, Prem came around the corner, hood up, listening to his iPod. He spotted Jay and Mukti together. Something inside him made him feel sick, no'angry, furious almost, seeing Mukti with another guy. He had no clue where this feeling was coming from but he knew what he was feeling. He yelled from right where he was "Jay!!"

Jay turned and looked at Prem, and stepped a bit away from Mukti. Mukti looked in the direction of the voice and saw Prem. Never had she been so happy to see him. She smiled a bit. Prem came walking up to them and for some reason, he didn't know why, he glared at Mukti as he came. Was he jealous? Even he didn't know. Prem pushed the thought out of his head.

P: What's up Jay? I've been looking for you everywhere! He then looked at Mukti. Oh, I see you two have met.

Mukti was wondering how Prem knew Jay.

J: Actually, (he put his arm around Mukti) Mukti and I have been friends for a long time. My dad's business just got shifted here and I was just walking around the university and saw her. Small world huh?

P: Yeah'.small world' He looked at Mukti.

M: Prem, how do you know Jay?

P: He was in my class this morning '

J: Prem? Didn't you say your name was UD?

P: Prem, UD, same thing

J: Oh ok, he said laughing. By the way, how do you know Mukti?

P: She lives in my house with all of her other sisters. Her mom and my mom have been out of state for some time now'

J: Oh, really? Jay smiled. Mukti's face suddenly became pale. Prem had said the wrong thing. Man you must have a big house

P: Yeah'I guess I do.. He shrugged

J: You know I rly have to get to know this place more'

P: We can hang out and I can show u around'if u want..

J: Sure why not? That sounds great! He flashed a smile at Mukti and winked

P: Alright I'll see you around! He said, and with one quick glance at Mukti, walked away.

J: I guess I'll see you later then? He said to Mukti and walked away smirking, leaving Mukti fearful of what was to come.

"Ugh how long do we have to wait?" Anjali groaned.

Kavya had taken Anjali to the ER, but apparently no one had thought that Anjali's case was such an emergency and so they had just given her a room and told her they would be with her in a couple of minutes. In reality though, Kavya and Anjali had been waiting for 1 hrs and no doctor had come to check Anjali yet. Dev, Kaajal, Angad and Kripa were downstairs getting something to eat, leaving just Kavya and Anjali to wait alone in the room.

K: I have no idea. These people are so freakin slow! He said, getting agitated and banging his fist on a nearby table.

A: I want to get out of here

K: Well I want them to check your ankle first. I won't rest until I know you're fine'

Anjali looked at him and gazed deeply into his eyes. Kavya realized what he just said and quickly added "Besides, my mom gave me the responsibility of taking care of everyone, so I don't want her to think I didn't do my job."

A: Oh' she said and looked the other way. A flash of sadness appeared on her face and disappeared instantly as she tried to hide her feelings. But Kavya had already seen it and felt a pang of guilt.

Why did I tell her that? Damn I ruined such a good moment! I should've let whatever was happening happen! I mean, that is what I've wanted'Thts wut I've been waiting for' a chance for us to get close'to tell each other how we feel, and now I just ruined it all! Kavya thought, frustrated.

A: Kavya?

Kavya turned his attention to Anjali, who was looking at him quizzically.

A: What's wrong? What hare you thinking about?

K: Nothing'Btw Anjali, you can call me Kavy

A: Kavy?

K: I let everyone who I like call me that

A smile appeared on Anjali's face. "Kavy.." She said testing it out, "so cute!"

Just then Dev, Kaajal, Angad and Kripa walked in, laughing at something that Dev had said. Kaajal was hitting Dev playfully on his shoulder and holding his hands while Angad and Kripa were smiling at them and holding hands.

Anjali turned to look at them and the first thing she noticed, well, the only thing she noticed was that Angad and Kripa were holding hands. At first she became surprised but that was quickly transformed into happiness, a huge grin evident on her face. Kripa noticed Anjali's reaction and quickly let go of Angad's hand and ran to her sister, looking a bit worried.

Kripa jumped back a little, startled. Angad came up behind her and put his arm around her shoulder and looked at Kavya suspiciously. "Sorry.." she murmured to Anjali.

Kri: Oh I didn't know.. y aren't the doctors here yet?

Kav: yea that's what I wanna kno too! Where the hell are they?

Ang: dude! Calm down.

Dev: we can go chk if you want

Kav: alright lets go

The boys left the room, leaving Kaajal, Kripa and Anjali together. Anjali looked at Kripa and cleared her throat and smiled, raising her eyebrows, her eyes moving from Kripa, to the door and back. Kripa looked at her, blushed slightly and said "don't ' say ' anything"

Anj: Ok' my lips are sealed (she made the motion of zipping her lips) ' for now

Kripa rolled eyes. Kaajal walked over to Anjali and sat on the bed.

Kaajal: I'm happy you're alright. Do you know who did this to you?

Anjali: No, I have no clue. It was probably just an accident

Kaajal: True, but the jerk didn't even have the decency to stay and help.

Kripa: Maybe he got scared..

Kaajal: scared? He's not a 5-yr old kid who would get scared Kripa. I doubt it. In my opinion, the only ppl who run r those tht r guilty'

Anjali: So ur saying someone did this on purpose?

Kaajal: could be'

Anjali: but who would try to hurt me?

Kripa sat down looking worried, "I don't know" she said.

Right at that moment, Anjali's cell phone rang, startling all three girls. Anjali checked her phone. "Oh, its Kt" she said, picking up.

Anj: Hel-

Kt: ANJALI!!!! Kya tum teek ho? Bahaut zaur se lagi? Bahaut chot toh nahin aye na? Tum kuch bolti kyun nahin? Kuch bolo!

Anj: Whoa calm down sis! Itne sare sawaal karogi toh jawaab kaise doongi?

Kt: Oh sorry'

Anjali giggled. It's okay. Abhi main teek hoon. Chot toh aye hai magar yeh nahin pata kitni ghari hai, doctor check karenge uske baad pata chalega.

Kt: Tumhe dard toh nahin horaha na?

Anj: Ha hota toh hai but its ok

Kt: I'm so sorry I can't be there. I still have one more class left.

Anj: I know its okay. Don't worry about it. I'll come home today and we can chat then. Now don't be late for your class.

Kt: Alright then, I'll see u at home. Bye, take care!

Anj: Bye

A minute after Anjali hung up with Kt, Mukti called.

M: huh ' hi Anjali'

A: Hi Mukti!

M: Ummm kaisi ho tum? Maine who accident ke bareme soonata.

A: It's alright, I'm fine. Anjali could sense that something was wrong with Mukti, her voice sounded distracted and worried. Yeh baata ke tu kaisi hai?

M: I-uh-Im, Im fine

A: U sure?

Mu: Yea..yea I'm sure. Listen do you need me? Do you want me to come over there?

A: No it's ok, Kripa and Kaajal r here, I can see u at home later.

M: Alright then, I gotta run'project for the Math Honor Society'

A: oh ok bye then

M: Bye! Take care

A: You too!

Anjali hung up the phone and looked at it for a minute, narrowing her eyes and thinking kuch tho hai, jo yeh mujhe nahin bata ri'

Anjali gave a fake smile and said "yea'of course'sab teek hai"

Kripa and kaajal smiled back

Just then, the guys came in with Kavya in front looking satisfied

Anjali: so wut happened Kavy?

Angad looked at Kavya in amusement and said "Kavy? Isn't that wut u let ppl you like call you?"

Kav: Yea.. Kavya shrugged.

Angad smiled and looked at Kripa who smiled bak, understanding. Dev and Kaajal looked at one another and nodded smiling. These reactions were completely missed by Kav-Anjali who were too busy looking at each other.

Kav: The nurses said the doctor will see you in a minute

Anj: Oh good. She sighed relieved

Kav: and'

Anj: And?

Kav: visiting hrs are ovr

Anj: oh.. she looked disappointed

D-K and A-K said their byes and left

Anj: so this means you'll have to go right? She said sadly

Kav: go? I'm not going anywhere! I'm staying here with you.

Anj; rly? She said excitedly

Kav: of course budhu! Who brought you here? So who do you think is going to take you home hmmmm?

Anjali laughed "Thanks Kavy, for being there for me!"

Kav: That's what I'm here for! He winked

Prem was walking down the hall, the image of Jay and Mukti standing together replaying in his mind over and over, he tightened his grip on his iPod as anger surged through his mind like an unstoppable storm. He wanted to hit something, someone, do something radical, irrational, scream out, yell, kick and take out all of this madness!! He couldn't understand wut he was feeling and it made him furious. He abruptly turned to the side and banged the wall with his fist, hard. His head bent down, sweat running down his forehead, breathing heavily. He closed his eyes and felt the buttons on his iPod and cranked up the volume, loud, the music penetrating his ears, slowly allowing him to relax.

Prem held onto her for a couple of seconds then raised her from where she was breathing hard against his chest. Prem was surprised.

P: Debo? (yep its Debonita frm KZK😛)

D: Hi Prem!

P: hey how have u been? I missed you

D: I missed you too! You never called me bak after that party at Nikhil's house'

P: I know, sorry bout that. I got busy with other'.stuff' he said, thinking of the Sharma girls but most of all, Mukti. He scowled.

D: Aww its ok. Listen I'm having a party at my house tonight and you HAVE to come, no excuses.

P: Hey tht sounds great! Of course I'll come.

D: Thanks, I kno I can count on you! And she hugged him.

See you then! She said and left.

Tht sounds good.. he thought. Then I could get my thoughts away from..her'he wrinkled his nose in disgust.

It was evening. Kavya's black BMW pulled into the large driveway and stopped. Kavy opened the door and got out. Anjali's door opened also. "Wait! Stop!" Kavya yelled. Anjali sighed and rolled her eyes. He walked around to the other side of his car and leaned in.

K: Yeh kya kar rahi thi?

A: Darwaza khol rahi thi baba!

K: Aur?

A: Aur kya? Bahar aa rahi thi!

K: Is tarah se? he said, nodding towards Anjali's ankle that was now hidden underneath layers and layers of white cast. "Aur who bhi is halat main? Jab tak main yahan hoon tab tak main tumhe akele is tarah kahin nai jaane de sakta"

Anjali let out a long exasperated breath.

A: ok fine. Itna kyun chilla rahe ho? Chalo ab meri madat karo. Badi madat karne aye ho tho!

Kavya helped Anjali out of the car. He took her right arm and placed it around his neck. He stepped closer to her until her waist touched his leg and the entire right side of her body found harmony with his. They slowly began to walk to the door, with Kavya supporting Anjali the whole way. Anjali looked into Kavya's eyes and saw so much concern for herself that she couldn't bear it. She became so immersed in her gaze that she forgot to look where she was going and tripped on a stone near her foot. " AAA" she yelped loudly as her injured foot crushed into the ground and she almost fell to the floor. Luckily, Kavya caught her midway.

K: Anjali! Are you okay?

A: Ah, it hurts so much she said her hands grabbing her ankle and her face scrunched up in pain. I'm sick of this!!! She yelled. Is tarah se jeene se tho mar jaana accha! She said angrily, though she knew she didn't mean it. Kavya however, became extremely serious.

K: Hey! Never (he leaned in close to her face, one finger pointing upward, Anjali looking worried) say that again! Tumhe kuch hone se pehla rab meri jaan lele' He gazed deeply into Anjali's eyes that were conveying shock, guilt, respect and love all at the same time.

A: Kavya'she whispered, looking into his eyes, his expression full of passion, desire and longing'a longing that ha been kept dormant for too much time..but no more'

Kavya leaned closer to Anjali's face, mesmerized by her innocence and natural beauty. He looked from her deep brown eyes to her luscious red lips. His hand tightened around her waist. Kavya had full control of Anjali right now, and deep down inside they both knew it. Slowly, unthinkingly, he whispered "I love you" and soon enough, his lips met hers for the first time. It was the most sweetest and most beautiful moment that any of them had ever experienced in their lives. They felt, that for the first time, they were whole. Before, they were missing a piece of themselves but now, it just fit. The pieces fit perfectly. They stayed locked for a couple of seconds longer, the breeze blowing around them until a car passing by made them come bak to reality, and they pulled apart. They first just stared at one another, but realizing wut had just happened, Anjali's face was overcome with a sense of fear and guilt. Kavya looked at her and thought oh no wut have I just done? He went a little too far..a little too fast..

Just then, Laksh came to the doorway and saw his brother with Anjali. "Bhaiya!" He called out and bounded down the steps to help him.

When Kavya and Laksh got Anjali inside, everyone was waiting for them ' except Mukti. Kavya and Laksh let Anjali gently sit on the arm chair and had her rest her ankle on the ottoman. They were all seated around her on the couches and on the floor when all of a sudden Angad came into the living room with a chocolate cake in his hand. He stood right beside Kripa and announced "yeh ek khush khabri ke liye!" Everyone exchanged looks, confused but a smile playing on their lips at the same time. Angad looked at Kripa and winked. Her eyes widened in shock thinking that he'll tell everyone about their relationship. She instantly slapped his shoulder with the back of her hand and glared at him. "Hey wut's the rush hun?" Angad said, grinning. You'll get some, I promise he said, stepping close and winking.

Kt: what is this for Angad? Kt stole a glance at Kripa and smiled.

A: well kt, its for Anjali! I think she's very brave, I mean who else could go into a hospital injured and come out the same day? Cheers Anjali this is for you! He said holding up the cake. Kripa rolled her eyes and everyone laughed.

Anj: Thank you Angad.. Anjali said appreciatively and smiled.

While everyone dug into the cake Angad leaned closer to Kripa, making her freeze where she was and accelerating her heart rate. That cake was for us, he whispered softly into her ear. For our new relationship'yours..he pointed to her, his finger near her palpitating heart, and mine he said pointing to himself.

About 10 minutes later, when everyone was finishing up, Mukti walked in, taking rapid strides and avoiding everyone. She looked disturbed, annoyed and hurt. Her cheeks were a light crimson color and she was hugging her long black sweater. It was evidently cold outside and seemed as if Mukti might have been running, seeing how fast she was walking. As she grabbed the smooth white banister to climb the stairs, Anjali called her and her heart lurched. She'd completely forgotten about Anjali what with Jay on her mind! Mukti took a deep breath, calming down then looked at her sisters and friends (yes she considered the boys friends now, since the girls had gotten even with them with their last prank) gathered on the velvet black couches and the black and white accented rug. Her eyes rested on Prem's for a split second taking in his curious expression, and then to Anjali and her ankle with a big white cast.

M: Oh Anjali! She cried, clasping her hand on her mouth lightly and running over to her sister. I'm so so sorry! Kaisi ho ab?

A: It's fine Mukti, main teek hoon lekin tum? Tumhe kya hua? Itni ghab rai hui kyun lag rahi ho? What's wrong? Anjali touched Mukti's hands..Omg! Mukti your hands are so cold and so..clammy..are you ok?

Mukti quickly took her hand back, "uh yea I'm ' I'm fine' I was just jogging to relax my nerves, I'm so stressed out."

Kashish got up from the couch and went to Mukti holding her shoulders.

Ks: It's ok, calm down Mukti! We're all here for you na (she gestured toward the girls) hum sab tumhari madat karenge.

Kr: lekin yeh tho batao ke kya hua..y r u so stressed?

Kt: is it the workload or ur other extracurricular activities?

Mukti glanced at Kt, trying so hard to hold bak her tears. They don't know she thought. They don't know anything, they don't even know HE'S back! How do I tell them? Should I tell them? Should I? Oh no God what should I do? Please help me'if I tell them then they'll worry'and who can save me from Jay? I tried to escape him but he's bak, he found me'I'm not safe anymore..I'll probably nvr be.

Kt snapped her fingers looking worried.

Kt: Mukti kya hua? Kahan kho gayi?

Anjali, like everyone else looked anxious, but she knew tht there was a deeper problem and tht college had nothing to do with it.

A: why don't we all just go upstairs? Anjali suggested.

The sisters nodded in agreement with Mukti still frozen.

Anjali shifted a little, preparing to stand up. Kavya's attention snapped to Anjali and he was on his feet in a flash. Remembering wut happened earlier tho, he seemed a bit embarrassed and apologetic, unsure of how he was going to make it up to her. Anjali looked at Kavya, expressionless.

Ks: Here I'll help, Kashish offered, helping Anjali get up. Kripa came to Anjali's other side and handed Anjali her crutches tht Kavya had neglected to give her b4 (how could he? Mr. Hero here wanted to pick her up! Now he can't do tht if she can get around on her own with crutches, can he?😉😆)

The girls started toward the stairs with guys watching them. Prem couldn't stop looking at Mukti. His gaze was intense and curious. He wondered why she was acting so strange. He'd never seen her like this. Even tho he didn't know Mukti too well, he still had an odd feeling in his guts that told him she wasn't preoccupied with school. I mean, who would look so terrified for something like tht? No'there is definitely something else..something tht apparently no one else knows'.

Right at tht moment the door bell rang. Mukti ceased walking. Kt turned to stare at her. Prem got up and went to open the door. A second later, Prem came in with a young man about his age and said "Everyone this is Jay, Jay these are my brothers (he waved toward the Khanna boys by the couches) and those are the Sharma girls who I guess you know'.he trailed off, nodding towards them.

The girls were in Anjali's room Anjali was sitting by her pillows with her injured ankle stretched out in front of her. Mukti was sitting near the middle of the bed, her feet dangling off the side and her hands tightly gripping the bed sheets. Kashish sat next to her smoothing her hair and whispering words of comfort. Kt and Kripa were pacing around the room uncomfortably, cursing Jay for coming back.

A: You guys plz, she's stressed out already

Kt: stupid, idiot a***h*** I hate tht b****! Why can't he leave her alone? Omg I wish he dies!

Kr: He rly should Kt, ab bas ho chukka!

A: Do u rly think things are going to get better by uttering negative things about him? He's Satan! Havan hai woh! How will we get rid of him on our own? I'm thinking of telling Kavy'

At tht, Mukti snapped to attention.

M: No Anjali! You won't do any such thing! She looked at all of her sisters and shook her head furiously. None of you will tell the guys anything! Promise me!

Kr: But why Mukti?

M: promise me Kripa, she said through gritted teeth. I don't want anyone getting involved.

Kr: fine she pouted, clearly unhappy with her sister's decision. After the girls made their vows, Anjali's cell phone rang.

A: It's Kaajal, she said slowly, answering the phone.

(Phone conversation: Only Anjali's part shown, not Kaajal's)

Hey Kaajal, wut's up? Anjali said in a resigned tone.

Yea, I'm fine. It doesn't hurt tht badly anymore

What? Tonight?

Anjali paused, thinking. She looked over at her sisters who were watching her expectantly.

Ummm I don't know'

That's true, I mean we all need to get our mind away,' she reasoned

Right

Ok then'oh no wait..my ankle..

Anjali waited for Kaajal's response and let out a small laugh.

Hah, yea I'll be the only girl on crutches

Kaajal said something again to which Anjali smiled and said "ok, anything for my sisters! Ok see u there then!"

Anjali put down her phone and announced tht Kaajal just invited her sisters to a party at another girl's house. Kt and Kripa were the first to agree, claiming tht they needed a distraction from all the hectic events tht had occurred. Kashish looked uncertain whereas Mukti firmly refused. Kt went ovr to her and sat on the floor beneath Mukti and placed a reassuring hand on her knee.

Kt: please di, you need to take your mind away from all of this and there's no better way than a party full of ppl! You won't even feel alone and no one can hurt u there!

Laksh and Sujal were passing by outside and stopped, coming into the room.

L: Did we just hear u say party? Laksh looked at Kt mischievously

Kt: Yea'so? Kt said defensively

L: So'(he smiled) we're going to a party too tonight

S: And since there's only one party going on tonight, it makes sense tht we're all thinking of going to the same party'Sujal looked at Kashish expectantly who slowly raised her gaze to his. Upon seeing his smile though, her cheeks flushed and she looked sideways.

M: Are all of you going? Mukti enquired.

S: umm I don't think Prem is'I mean he's out with Jay so he'll probably be back late.

M: Oh' Knowing tht Jay wouldn't be at the party was a huge comfort to Mukti and her facial expression became more relaxed.

Kt: So what's ur point? Kt said, standing up and putting her hands on her hips. Laksh walked over to stand in front o f Kt.

L: Our point is, Ms. Attitude, tht we can take u guys there.

Kt: No nee-

A: of course! Thank you so much for the offer Laksh. We'll be ready in about an hour or hour and a half. We'll let u know.

The sun had set a few minutes ago and the sky was slowly turning dark blue. Prem looked out of the windshield, driving by familiar places in his hometown and pointing them out to Jay who was seated next to him. Prem had been driving for a long time now and finally pulled into the parking lot of a Dance club. He turned off the engine and sat back, putting his hands behind his head and closing his eyes.

J: And what's this?

P: It's the local dance club

J: Ah, meeting some chicks and chilling eh? Not bad

P: Yea.. Prem said with a smile, though there was still a slight trace of anger in his tone from earlier in the day.

J: So wut r we waiting for? Let's go in and get down with some hot girls!

At the mention of girls, an image of Mukti flashed into Prem's mind, tht morning in her bedroom, with Prem and her just inches apart from each other. He immediately opened his eyes, disgusted at the image.

J: What's wrong?

P: Ugh'nothing'listen, forget this. There's a party tonight at my friend's house, you down for that?

J: Sure lets go!

P: Alright, I'll take you back to my house so u could get ur car.

And with tht, Prem started the engine and pulled out of the parking lot thinking'now I can finally get my mind away from tht stupid basanti..plus, Jay wont be able to get near her either' he thought getting a bit giddy but not understanding why.
