~.::OSR Samyukta of Dharam and Veer::.~
A brotherhood of love...and of ideals
I have dedicated this story to the name Samyukta which signifies togetherness, unison and interdependance. This story is set in 13th century Northern India. It is a story of two cousin brothers - one royal, the son of the ruling monarch (Dharam) and other one brought up as a royal (Veer). The story is no doubt about the trials and tribulations that the brothers face, about their ideals, their relationships and their circumstances - However, the underlying message of the story being that unity is victory!

Hence named - Samyukta of Dharam and Veer

OSR Samyukta part 1 - Introduction - The setting of the story so far...

Since the story begins with an incident in the lives of the boys after their schooling and education (Gurukul), I have etched a brief introduction of the kingdoms (Part 1) and the growing up and lifestyle of the princes up and until that point of time...

Hundreds of years ago, in about the 13th century AD; there were independent peaceful clusters of cities situated towards the Northern boundaries of the Indian subcontinent. These cities governed by local chieftains, were primarily inhabited by Shramiks; the very name reflecting their class and livelihood (Shramik = worker) The arid climate signified that the society's economy depended principally on metallurgical, sculpting and constructional skill trading, in exchange for spices, grains and cotton.

Eventually, the harmony of these clans was threatened with constant invasions by more powerful neighbouring kingdoms. One such powerful kingdom ruled by a dynasty called the Aryavarts (derived from the word Arya-noble i.e. people who considered themselves Aryan descendants) were successful in asserting their power over a large area. Time and again, rebellious chieftans were ousted and one large kingdom was formed ' the kingdom of Aryanagar; with its capital, the city of Aryanagar.

Originally, what seemed to be a genuine attempt at maintaining unity within the Shramiks and organizing trade, helped to maintain a brief consistency in the economy. However, one after the other; as monarchs became increasingly indulgent in royal pleasures, they raised taxes on the commoners and gradually usurped even their basic rights. Shramiks were reduced to no more than slaves used in construction of lavish structures. This gave rise to blind hope in the form of folklore amidst the Shramiks about the arrival of a saviour or a messiah to rescue them from eternal bondage.

The 15th century saw the crowning of an underachieving monarch Aryavardhan, who was a mere puppet at the hands of his vindictive older brother Jaivardhan. Aryvardhan was controversially chosen for the throne due to a fall out between Jaivardhan and the assembly nobles when they questioned him about the escalating brutality in his governance.

The torturous rule led to the immediate thwarting of mounting pockets of resistance by disgruntled Shramiks. One such brave rebel leader Mahadev was brutally murdered in front of the entire city to see, including his pregnant wife, Pari and young daughter, Sakshi.

Few days later, during an eve of royal family celebration with the monarchs' firstborns Dharam (son of Aryavardhan) and Agnivardhan (son of Jaivardhan); a soothsayer approached Jaivardhan to reveal a dark vision. He uncovered his fears about the birth of a Shramik child that would be capable of bringing an end to the menacing rule of the Aryavart lineage. To ensure that the words of the soothsayer were never proved true, the vicious Jaivardhan covertly ordered the death of all Shramik newborns to take place during the middle of the night.

Trying to flee from the cruel havoc caused in the cities and villages, Mahadev's wife, Pari; was one of the many mothers who tried to escape with her two children that night. The long winding pursuit took her to the powerful Aryavart temple of Shankarnath. Fearing for the safety of her children, the desperate mother offered her child at the Lord's feet, crying out to him to protect her son and the Shramiks from the torturous regime. However, the hastening soldiers left the grieving mother with little choice but to place the baby in a flower basket and let go of it in the river nearby. Unable to give up her brother, the tearful young Sakshi follows the course of the basket along the banks of the river, not minding the calls of her worried mother.

At a considerable distance away in the same river, the widowed sister of Aryavardhan and Jaivardhan, Nivritti; stood defeated as she drowned her miscarried infant in the cold water. Having lost her two sons, husband and her kingdom to rival fractions, she decided to end her woeful lonely life along with her baby in the strong currents. As she waddled lifelessly in chin-deep water, a basket gushing through the water caught her attention. As fate would have it, she grabbed on to it and was shocked to find it cradling a healthy new born baby, wailing aloud. In a frenzy of deprived maternal emotions, she hugged the baby tearfully, wanting to claim it as her own.

The puzzled sister observing this spectacle from the other end of the bank felt a wave of inexplicable relief, as she saw her brother subjected to luxuries and emotions that she was never fortunate enough to be blessed with.

Suddenly distracted by the distraught cries of her maid servant Sunanda, the horrified Nivritti decided to rush back towards the bank, with the bundle of joy and the new responsibility in her arms. After rescuing and reprimanding her mistress for worrying her family and palace residents, the shocked maid; Sunanda noticed the Shramik child in Nivritti's hand. The desperate Nivritti then took an oath from her alarmed maid, ordering her to maintain the secrecy of her child's origin.Thus began the fateful pledge of an Aryavart mother that would change the course of history of the Aryavart dynasty.

Introduced to the relieved family as Nivritti's own, the baby is then officially named in a formal ceremony as Veervardhan i.e. Veer.

As the months go by, scenes of Veer holding the little finger of Dharam while taking his first steps, agni hiding a saddened Dharam's toys and Veer pleading innocence to all mischief; echo laughters of joy in the palace rooms. The princes grow up to be the apple of their parent's eyes enjoying all comforts of the palace, while the life of the Shramiks outside is anything but. Veer's Shramik family are reduced to catching a few glimpses of him growing up, as the young royals are rarely allowed to step out of the royal gardens.

As they approach their sixth year, the princes are sent to the Ashram of the revered sage Brahmadatta to gain knowledge in all aspects of politics, language, literature, war, art and religion. Dharam, true to his name and upbringing; excels in politics and shastras, thus displaying stiff competition to Agni and all other fellow Gurukul members in lessons and scriptures. Veer on the other hand grows to be rebellious, consequentially suffering punishment many a time at the hands of his Guruji. However, his unsurpassed courage and intelligent instincts on the play-fields make him a fiercely competitive warrior, leaving even his tutors amazed. Dharam and Veer remain inseparable and supplement each other's weaknesses when and wherever necessary. Much to the dismay of Agni, the brothers grow up to become incredibly protective and fiercely defensive of the other. They also strike friendship with a fellow Aryvart noble's son, Balaram i.e. Bhalla.

On the day of their departure from the ashram, their tutor blesses them to be together for ever and to take their kingdom to greater heights ' one like Shri Ram, following promises and duties and the other like Lord Krishna, fighting for the right cause.

The three princes come home to a royal welcome and celebration, where the onlookers include Veer's jubilant Shramik family. They spend their initial days in fun and frolic, occasionally joined by Bhalla too; where their games and adventures chiefly include competing with and distressing Agni and his disgruntled group of friends. In this process, many-a-time they end up undoing the propaganda of the irked king, having to consequentially make up for all of it. Their shielded and spoilt youth results in the fact that they hardly pay second thoughts to the immoral happenings in the kingdom around them. Many months pass by in such frisky mischief, until one fine day, one of their pursuits; bursts their bubble and leads them a few steps closer to reality...

------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------

This is an outline of the family and the characters (for those who dont follow the serial)

Characters of Dharam Veer

Dharmavardhan (Dharam) ' Dashing, handsome, matured, patient, obedient, responsible, truthful, a perfect gentleman proud of his lineage. He is a very good fighter, but duty always comes before anything else for this true prince. Of traditional beliefs, he believes that a well-organized class system works for the betterment of society.

Veervardhan (Veer) ' Vivacious, naughty, adorable, brave, short-tempered, adventurous, impatient, impulsive, protective, emotional and a courageous prince, who has no qualms about questioning authority; if the situation demanded it. He is an excellent fighter but tends to use his heart over his head on some occassions. He admires simplicity, even though his bringing up was in a royal household.

Aryavardhan ' The king of Aryanagar! Though not cruel at heart and always seeking to set an ideal organized society, he is weak and always depends on his older brother to make his decisions for him. He blindly trusts his older brother in the running of the empire, thus unable to be an independent strong ruler.

Jaivardhan (Jai)' Extremely ambitious, evil and a hateful monarch, jealous of his younger brother's accession to the throne. He is cruel to the Shramiks, greedy for power and protective of his son. He would go to any lengths to achieve what he sets out to.

Agnivardhan (Agni) ' Jealous of Dharam and Veer's friendship and popularity, the son of Jaivardhan doesn't think very different from his father. He is as cruel, if not more than his father. He lacks any conscience about committing every crime that would lead to the destruction of Dharam and Veer, and lead to his succession to the throne.

Nivritti ' She fears for Veer day and night, as she is aware that if the truth of his birth is known to her brothers; they would destroy him in no time. A loving and caring mother to Veer, with great respect for Dharam too.

Swathi - Of traditional beliefs, Swathi is affectionate towards her family and an ideal queen for Aryanagar. A good friend to Nivritti, she manages both her affairs and her family with equal ease.

The original family of Veer -

Mahadev - The Shramik father of Veer ' a rebel leader, killed in his youth

Pari - The Shramik mother of Veer who is very protective of her children. She doesn't want Veer's origin to be known to anyone, in fear of the fact that he might be killed by the Aryavarts, once revealed.

Sakshi - The shramik sister of Veer, who is as rebellious, independant and short tempered as he is.

OSR Samyukta Part 2 - A rude awakening ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The two princes race against each other vigorously, as sweat trickles from the brows of their muddy faces. Fleeting through the rough terrains and increasingly shabby lanes that the elongated game was taking them through, the persistent princes continue; oblivious to the dipping light. Eventually, a considerable distance from the centre of the kingdom, dejection begins to set in about not having been able to locate the route to Agni's treasure. As the game begins losing its charm; Dharam and Veer become discomforted by the escalating unfamiliarity of the silhouettes and they reduce their pace to a trot.
Dharam looks at Veer pleadingly for approval "It's getting very dark…shall we stop now… everyone at the palace must be getting worried... it is going to take us a while to get back...."
Veer smiles "Ok…but we will start again tomorrow...even earlier...what do you think?"
Dharam smiles thankfully "We would need to ask someone the quickest route back home though… "
Looking at Dharam's sunken face, Veer trots around the deserted place in circles and then mutters "You wait here… I will quickly locate someone to help us with directions...I will be back in a short while..."
No sooner than Dharam endeavours to stop him, Veer kicks his horse briskly and rides off to enquire. Dharam nods his head and tugs the reigns of his restless horse in an attempt to calm it, while he waits patiently in the dark for Veer's return. A few moments later, a faint sound of muffled cries alerts him and he quickly darts around to locate the direction of the noise. As the cries echoing through the dense shrubbery become increasingly prominent, he descends from his horse stealthily and leads it to a tree nearby. Pacifying his tired steed by whispering into its ears, Dharam gradually fastens its reigns to the branches of the tree.
Clinching the hilt of his sword, the prince tip toes through the rustling leaves and shrubbery. When peaking through the branches of a tree, he becomes taken aback to find the scarred faces of three ruffians glaring at him. Observing how the thugs were tightly holding down and muffling a young struggling girl; Dharam takes a few moments to comprehend the gravity of the situation, before slowly advancing towards the men.
Noticing the young prince walk in their direction; one ruffian scowls aloud "Looks like a spoilt brat lost his way..."
Adjoining his partner; another brute mocks "Why doesn't he just mind his own business and get going? Seems like he wants to die…"
Comprehending their warnings; Dharam smirks in reply "No! I just came to show off my sword!" he moves forward carefully, ordering the thugs "leave the girl alone..."
Tired of the disturbance to their plans; the third ruffian adds "Enough of this nonsense! Let's finish off with this quickly... I am hungry"
As two of the thugs decide to act upon their instincts, they step away from the girl and remove their weapons, coming face to face with the prince. Following a few tense moments, Dharam swiftly pulls out his sword and a long fierce battle ensues. Defending himself from the swift strikes of sharp daggers being meted out by the thugs, Dharam consequently strives to inflict grave wounds on the assailants. To safeguard the small child's safety, the prince gradually begins leading the ruffians away from her vicinity. As the unpleasant battle continues for a while, the exhausted Dharam commences to feel the day's adventures, beginning to take a toll on his stamina.
A sudden hard blow from behind results in the sword being knocked off from his hand. Just as the startled prince quickly composes himself and tries to turn around, he feels the sharp sting of metal enter and exit the flesh of his shoulder. Trying not to think of the blood soaking his robe or the cackling jeers from the ruffians; he struggles to duck a few blows, before the royal is finally hauled to the ground. One thug picks up the royal sword in admiration and then runs towards Dharam to inflict the final blow. However; distracted by the loud screams of a menacing rider on a horse charging towards them, the brute is forced to turn around in alarm.
Jumping off the galloping horse; the dynamic Veer kicks two of the ruffians, shoving them out of balance. Watching the ongoing developments; the third man scrambles to pick up his dagger and charges towards the injured prince instead. Nevertheless; the blade is abruptly stopped in its tracks, by the fierce grip of Veer's bare hands.
Glaring at the sly man, who was shocked by the sight of blood trickling from his wounded fingers down the blade; Veer responds authoritatively "Did you think you would get away with it? Don't dare... don't even dare...." He then turns in Dharam's direction "Dharam, which of these unfortunate men had the audacity to hurt you?"
As Dharam indicates in the direction of one of the attackers, Veer takes the hint and then smiles cynically at the hapless man. Immediately lunging forward; the brave prince rapidly strikes the offender with one victorious stroke of his sword. Quickly realizing that they were no match for the might of the skilful young warrior; the remaining men desperately try to flee the area. Drawing two knives from his hilt; Veer instantly aims the weapons at them, killing one of the escaping thugs and maiming the other. Triumphantly walking up to the injured man; Veer questions him about the girl in a dominant tone, thus forcing the defeated ruffian to explain everything about their plot to kidnap the child in return for a ransom from her parents.
Threatend by Veer; the quivering man swiftly reveals the details of the girl's address, following which; Veer nods his head cynically "Now that your clever ploy has been foiled...and that your companions have left you all alone...would you like to join them now...or maybe later?"
Apprehending the prince's intent; the vanquished thug starts wailing in a desperate bid to obtain mercy. Responding to the sobbing man, Veer casually suggests "All right... we shall leave you here to the mercy of the forest...for the night. If you are fortunate enough to survive the forest through the night, the soldiers will be here to fetch you in the morning...." he shudders "if not...a hungry animal or two might..."
Not minding the escalating pleas of the injured man; Veer then worriedly turns around, to face his injured brother. The gallant Dharam however, returns Veer's worried frowns by signalling him to tend to the unconscious girl. Sighing deeply for a moment; the hurried prince runs towards the girl, loosens the tight ropes binding her and then fetches water from a lake nearby, to sprinkle on her face. Waking up trembling and shivering in fear; the girl finds herself being comfortingly shushed and hugged, by the caring Veer. Carrying the frightened girl towards the foot of the tree; The prince places her besides Dharam, after which; he removes his robe to wrap the girl in warmly.
Eventually approaching his brother; Veer begins to examine his shoulder slowly. As the injured Dharam winces with pain, the concerned Veer asks "Is it painful.... a lot....I ..."
Brushing away his worries; Dharam replies nonchalantly "No.... no... that's enough of fussing over me... I am all right...I'll live..." he grabs the piece of cloth from Veer and starts tying it around Veer's injured hand instead "It will get septic... you always want to show off your valiance...don't you?"
Irked by Dharam's mocks; Veer retorts "Dharam! How grateful! You are alive because of me! Have you forgotten how to thank someone?"
Smirking to himself; Dharam argues "oh... so.."
Intimidated by her surroundings; the insecure child begins weeping, thus interrupting the insignificant parley.
Touched by her reactions; Dharam moves close to the girl and puts his hand around her protectively, as he pacifies her "Don't worry. We are going to take you to your parents. No one will harm you now... are...are...are you feeling hungry?"
Nodding her head vehemently; the disturbed girl mentions amidst loud sobs "No...I just want to go back to my parents now..."
Smiling at the child coyly; Veer wastes no further time and quickly carries her towards his horse, while Dharam takes his sword and proceeds towards his.
Wiping her tears gleefully; the child utters in a pragmatic tone "If the king of this country, Maharaj Aryavardhan; was as brave and caring as you both, we wouldn't have to face all these troubles. He doesn't even care for this part of the country... or what goes on here.... I am very lucky...thank you... "
OSR SAMYUKTA Part 3 – It all starts sinking in…
Aryanagar – Village of Sawai – At a small rustic house
After three knocks, they hear a faint voice from inside "Who is it?"
The child replies "Dadiji… its me… open quickly… its cold out here"
Following the sound of hurried footsteps, the wooden door creaks open to reveal a frail old woman. She nearly stumbles on the doorstep as she desperately tries to grab the child, who runs from Veer's arms into her grandmother's. Elated, they hug each other affectionately, while tears of relief start flowing from the tired lady's eyes.
Dharam speaks softly "W...We...We will have to leave now…. It is very late and our parents must be very worried… we just wanted to ensure that she was back home safe … the ruffians have been taken care of… so don't worry…"
The old lady turns towards the silhouette of the two princes at the doorstep
The child smiles and adds "Yes grandma … they saved my life"
The grandmother moves towards them, wipes the water from her eyes with the corner of her veil and holds Veer's face gratefully. He becomes thoroughly touched by the depth of gratitude in her eyes.
The old lady replies, expressing her gratitude "You have saved my Sonu… I don't have much to offer you other than my blessings…" she reflects briefly and then grabs them both feebly by their wrist, leading them into the house "let me show you at least some appreciation, by feeding you one meal"
They meekly try protesting her enthusiastic attempts, while she forcibly seats them on wooden stools. She promptly lights the hearth to warm the food and serves them a sparse yet heart-warming meal of flattened breads (rotis) and local lentils. The famished princes gulp down the simple tasty course in no time, recalling the wonderful memories it brought back of their Gurukul days.
Wrapping up his meal, Dharam smiles at the yawning girl and asks her "So, your name is Sonu?"
Sonu blushes and nods her head "Yes…" she then pauses for a while "Bhaiyya... can I go to sleep now? I have to get back to work early tomorrow morning"
They laugh heartily, following which; Veer playfully mocks the girl "You?...Work?...Where?"
Sonu explains dramatically "Oh! Didn't you know…the construction of the royal guest house is going on… not far from here…I go there with my mother and father every day"
The smiles on their faces fade, as the gravity of her claim strikes them.
Dharam asks her curiously "Why do you not play with girls your age Sonu?"
She giggles loudly "Bhaiyya … are you not Aryavasis? All my friends also work there!" she ponders "except Rani of course… she couldn't work because of ill health...they took her away!"
The look at the old lady aghast, as she speaks up to add "You are young Aryavrats, so you are probably ignorant of it…. all Shramiks however young or old, have to report to work… if not, the soldiers would first warn us…and then take away our belongings or even…."
Dharam retorts "This is ridiculous…the city I come from, the capital…Aryanagar is not like this…workers are paid well…everyone has two decent meals…grants are distributed…children not forced to work…"
She interrupts him, as she takes away their empty plates "All villages around here possess similar situations…soldiers take taxes away even before handing our daily wages…" she laughs "we are lucky we haven't lost our small inherited house yet… I think that is why the ruffians thought we had some money and probably captured…" she pauses briefly "I think it is better I stop…"
Reeling from the shocking information they received; Dharam and Veer rinse their hands, pondering about the state of that village quietly.
Veer looks at Sonu affectionately "Do you want to come and live with us?" rubbing his wet hands on his garment he approaches her and takes her hands in his palms. His eyes well up when he realises how tiny her bruised soiled fingers were in comparison to his. Choked, he continues "you can also study and play like other girls… you can" he is stopped by Dharam's subtle disapproving expression and he looks back at Sonu's puzzled face helplessly.
Dharam asks the lady politely "Maaji… would you be able to identify the soldiers who are responsible for mistreating and threatening everyone in this village…."
Sonu jumps in "yes I can… I can… I know the red soldiers from this city and… the new blue tunic ones that have started coming in as well…"
The door of the modest dwelling suddenly opens wide ajar, revealing the dumbfounded faces of the girl's parents, staring at the princes of Aryanagar conversing with their daughter. The mother breaks the few awkward moments of silence by running to her daughter in a frenzy of joy and relief. Cradled in the arms of her mother, the child explains her ordeal animatedly to her parents.
The grateful man faces the princes with folded palms "Rajkumar…y...you both…saved the life of my daughter… I don't know how to thank…"
The plates slip from the hand of the grandmother when she realises the rank of her guests and the implications of her previous conversations. She starts wailing and pleading with them to forgive her and not mind her complaints about the incidents in the village. An awkward Dharam holds her supportively and smiles to reassure the apprehensive family. As the princes decide to take leave, the moved Dharam removes his gold bracelet and hands it to the old lady.
The father looks at Dharam apologetically "After all you have done for us…I owe you my very life…please don't mistake me Rajkumar…. but if anyone found out that we possessed an expensive item like this…we would all be jailed…forgive my insolence but you must take leave princes... your family would be very worried"
Not having the heart to leave, without offering the family something; Dharam anxiously prances about, asking aloud "Does a goldsmith…a pawnbroker live close by?"
On receiving no reply, Veer steps in "Tell me… quickly… I can ride at the speed of light….I will be back in no time…"
No sooner than the hesitant man gives the directions to the nearest pawnbroker, Veer immediately dashes outside the house, mounts his steed and gallops off speedily.
Arayanagar – Village of Sawai - The Pawnbroker's
An irate elderly man opens the door slowly. Recognizing the person at his doorstep, his expression changes to one of sudden disbelief.
Veer nods his head formally and steps into his house. Removing his bracelet and placing it on the table, Veer requests the pawnbroker "I am sorry for knocking on your door at such an odd hour! I am in a hurry and have to get back as soon as I can. Please pay me its worth… in copper coins only."
The confused pawnbroker stares at the bracelet and replies amidst stutters and stammers "I don't have enough c…c…copper coins at home to match the price of the bracelet"
Veer nonchalantly replies "that is all right… just give me all you have."
The awestruck man proceeds slowly towards his wooden cupboard, pausing and turning every other moment to glance at Veer.
Noticing his expressions, Veer sighs and confirms the man's doubts "Yes…yes…yes … I am Rajkumar Veer… now please if you may sir... please hurry…please understand my urgency..."
Aryanagar - Village of Sawai - Outside the hut
After what seemed like an eternity, Veer returns with a large pouch full of copper coins and hands it to the grandmother. The princes smile at Sonu affectionately for the last time. She tries holding back the tears in her eyes and slips between her father's legs to hide her face. After a brief while, Veer and the father of the child help the injured Dharam on his horse, while the injured prince grits his teeth in pain. Not having much time to spare, they bid the grateful family a quick farewell and the two princes disappear into the darkness of the forest
They ride fast and ceaselessly for a long time, until Dharam is unable to bear the pain that the tugging reins and jolts cause his shoulder anymore. Finding himself incapable of keeping up with Veer, he winces in pain loudly and calls out to Veer. Veer brings his horse to a screeching halt and turns around worriedly, to see a slouched Dharam. He quickly jumps off his horse and runs exasperatedly to Dharam.
Sparing no time, he climbs on to Dharam's horse, seats himself ahead of him and gently rests his brother's tired head on his shoulder. Positioning himself thus, he rides swiftly, balancing both their weight alone and simultaneously leading his bare horse by its reins to his left. As Veer continues his journey steering both horses skillfully, flashbacks of the disturbing scenes of that fateful day constantly play in his mind.
An abrupt but welcome relief to his troubled persona comes in the form of a familiar voice from the dark expanse "Rajkumar Veer… Rajkumar Veer….here I am…Commander-in-chief Sanjaya…where have you been…everyone in the palace has been worried and soldiers have been looking out for you all over the kingdom…"
Palace of Aryanagar- Veer's bedroom
Smiling in his sleep, he relishes the soft touch of his mother on his face, taming the harsh morning light of the sun. He turns around and pulls the covers over his head.
Nivritti smiles at her son "Veer do you realize it is nearing mid noon"
He nods his head acknowledging her statements, with the satin sheets still covering his head.
Nivritti sighs to herself "I can't believe you both are brought up in the same family – in spite of being unwell last night; he woke up early…bathed…dressed…prayed…and here you are still lazing in bed."
Veer moans to himself through the covers "Oh Lord! Why has Dharam taken it upon himself to defame me at every instance?"
Nivritti laughs to herself, bends over, pulls the sheet off her son's face and gives him a peck on his forehead, as she mutters a prayer to God for returning her son safely back to her.
Veer faces his mother and tries reasoning with her "Ma, he is going to become the king…so he tries to put on an honest act all the time…"
Nivritti nods dramatically "Oh I see…."
The anxious prince then enquires slowly "How is he feeling now?"
Nivritti smiles teasingly "Oh...he is fine... recovering... the physician said the injuries are only superficial….he is now probably eating specially prepared cuisine by his mother now…"
Veer springs out of his covers and sits up "What….and what about me…"
Nivritti shrugs her shoulders and then watches amused, as Veer immediately jumps out of his bed to proceed and finish his morning routines, before joining Dharam to devour his lovely meal.
Palace of Aryanagar- Dharam's bedroom
Dharam tries revolting, as his unconvinced mother lovingly feeds him mouthful after mouthful of specially prepared food. He whines incoherently with the food in his mouth to no avail until they are suddenly distracted by the teasing whistles of Veer casually walking into the room.
Watching his brother stride in, Dharam retorts uncomfortably "Ma…I can eat myself…please..."
Maharani Swathi asks him wide-eyed "Dharam… don't tell me you are embarrassed because of Veer … you both are after all, our children…" she beckons to Veer "Veer why don't you come here and taste this. Let me know how it is…" Looking at how gladly Veer sat at her foot, with his mouth wide open; Swathi adds "See … this is a good boy… doesn't put on airs about being fed by his aunt…"
Dharam strives to avoid Veer's teasing expressions and tries to listen to his mother's chatter, as the queen continues to feed them lovingly "Dharam… I would only have such rights of affection over you …for a few more days…"
Dharam smiles "Why do you say that ma?"
The queen explains patiently "What do you mean? In a year or two, you might ascend the throne… you are old enough now… The king and I would like to see you married soon…"
Dharam and Veer nearly choke on the morsels in their mouth, out of shock.
Palace of Niphaud
The regal queen of Niphaud, Maharani Gauri; decked in pristine attire thoroughly complementing her magnetic personality, confidently metes out sets of orders to her group of personal attendants. As the queen meticulously supervises various royal responsibilities from her monumental chamber, her attention is caught by the steady stream of maids walking to and fro the large hallway with small pails of water and bowls of coloured dyes. Amused, she descends from her couch and peeks out of her chamber quietly. She watches the maids whispering complaints to each other about the stains on their dresses and becomes puzzled. Alerted by the queen's presence behind them, the maids bow to her and scamper back to their duties. The queen then notices a flurry of activity around the large room at the very end of the vast corridor.
To investigate the commotion, she walks along with her personal maids through the elegant hallway, passing by miniature water fountains and attractive flowering creepers. As they approach the room, she hears groans of pain from within and hurriedly rushes to the entrance. The queen is left absolutely speechless by the transpiring scenes, while the maids in the room abruptly stop all their activities and bow down to the monarch in silence.
The fluffy rugs on the polished floors of the vast eloquent room are stained with various hues of colours. Spots of dyes are smudged all over the expensive silk sheets and fabrics draping the ornate carved furniture around the bed. Water and dye spills on the floor add to the additional clutter of abandoned scrolls lying randomly. The horrified queen glares at the old maid seated on a stool, whining about the pain in her back caused by posing in the same position indefinitely. An old tutor sits on a couch with his face in his hands, dejected and defeated.
Amidst all the disarray in the room, a slender girl leans on her lush divan, humming a tune to herself; blissfully ignorant of her mother's presence behind her. Radiating ethereal beauty, the girl merrily swings her legs through her pink brocaded ghagra, making a jingling noise with her anklets. She dips her quill in one of the numerous miniature mud-pots of dyes surrounding her, and ponders to herself for a while. As a lock of her lengthy silky tresses repeatedly falls on her face, she tucks it behind her sparkling earrings, before continuing with her pursuit on yet another scroll. The jingles of her bangles are abruptly muffled by the loud screams of the queen "Siya…"
The startled girl stands up and straightens herself immediately. She tries to rub the dye blotches off her ivory hued hands and face. The young princess stares nervously at her mother with riveting innocence, as her long dark eyes strive to hide the mischief and fear in them. She asks her mother softly "Yes ma…"
The queen thunders "What have you been doing?"
Siya replies casually "Oh! I have just been learning how to paint."
OSR SAMYUKTA Part 4 - Realizing their fears…
Palace of Aryanagar - Dharam's bedroom
Ensuring that his mother had left the room, the irritated Dharam whacks Veer on the back of his head in order to get back at his prankish harassments pertaining to Dharam's imminent wedding plans. An irked Veer hits him back, in return for a harder slap from Dharam. They continue doing the same till it evolves into a silly persistent contest. Their rally of scuffles gradually culminates into a crescendo of brutish attacks, primarily driven by the ego of not wanting to give in. As they grab each other by their collars, Dharam orders Veer to let go of him, as he pins him to the ground. Veer retaliates by tightening the hold on Dharam's neck.
They are distracted by a confused voice addressing them "Dharam! Veer! What is going on?"
Both of them look up to see the shocked faces of the king and their chubby friend staring down at them. They let go of each other as soon as they notice the commander-in-chief and numerous other nobles entering the room, one behind the other. They stagger up, brush their clothes and straighten their hair, displaying foolish smiles as they do so. Trying to avoid the confused glances of the onlookers, Dharam resumes his seat quietly.
Aryavardhan sighs and introduces the nobles to Dharam one by one. The nobles pay their salutations to the prince to wish him a speedy recovery and then leave the room silently.
After the nobles exit, the king talks to Dharam sternly "It seems like you didn't hear the announcement of our arrival. I thought you were hurt…but here you are, busy fighting with Veer….anyway, how are you feeling now son?"
Dharam glares angrily at Veer, who turns away in an attempt to conceal his mischievous grin.
"I am fine father… recovering well…"
Suddenly Dharam receives a hard pat on his back causing him to briefly frown in pain, while Bhalla speaks up proudly "Dharam…. Veer… I can only begin to imagine how that ordeal must have been….! Indeed what brave friends I have …those brutes…ruffians… luckily for them I decided to sleep early and not join you last night…" Veer and Dharam desperately try to control their smirks, while their friend continues with his string of personal claims.
After no visible signs of ceasing his praises, Aryavardhan decides to interrupt Bhalla "Dharam! Sanjaya explained all about the incident and how the Shramik ruffians attacked and robbed you. I heard they have been taken care of now! Son... it is not safe to travel in lonely dark forests with money and jewellery on person. Henceforth, you will not travel alone again – both of you!"
The princes' smiles wear off gradually and Dharam turns to Sanjaya puzzled "Attacked and robbed in the forest? It happened near Sawai… I… I was not attacked to be robbed… on the contrary; I fought with them to protect the child…who gave you this wrong information?"
Sanjaya seems confused "Child? In Sawai? I was told…"
Dharam is about to explain but he stops, as he catches Veer's worried expression indicating towards the corridor. He spots his nosy untrustworthy uncle, Jaivardhan approaching them and decides against pursuing the puzzling matter.
Jaivardhan enters the room sporting a sly smile and then requests the king to accompany him to the awaiting assembly session.
Just as the king and his brother are about to leave, Sanjaya resumes the conversation "Rajkumar, what were you talking about?"
Veer abruptly chips in with nonsensical small talk joined by Dharam; distracting the confused Sanjaya and successfully leading Jaivardhan off the scent. Hard pressed for time, the king loses interest and then bids them a hasty farewell leaving for the assembly with his brother.
Veer and Dharam look at each other, worried by the distorted facts provided to the commander-in-chief and the king.
Palace of Niphaud - Siya's bedroom
The plump affable king Janaardhan nervously adjusts his majestic royal tunic; staring blankly at his wife and his daughter for moments together, mentally pitying his unfortunate responsibility of having to pass a verdict. His good-natured heart finally melts, looking at the angelic look in his daughter's eyes and speaks out slowly "Dear queen, I think we must try and understand that all she was trying to do, was to perfect a form of art."
The seething queen, who is seated on her couch, stands up angrily "Perfecting a form of art?" She shows him the scrolls dotted with amateurish half painted figures "Would you call this perfecting a form of art?"
Sia meekly adds "I don't think the tutor was very good."
Janaardhan agrees "Yes…I think he gave up too soon…"
The frustrated queen shouts out "You don't want to send her away for professional tutelage like other girls her age and now she is always up to no good."
The king looks sheepishly at his attractive daughter "Not all princesses go away for tutelage… besides, she is our only child...how could you think of sending her away…"
The queen retaliates "You are spoiling her" she sighs and continues "When I named her Siya I was hoping that she would retain at least some qualities of Goddess Seeta – matured, poise …responsible…. But those are precisely the qualities she lacks …."
Listening to her mother's harsh words, tears start flowing from the pretty girl's eyes.
The queen looks at Siya's saddened face, nods her head dejectedly and speaks, as she exits the room "Oh Lord! When would she learn to manage her own affairs? I don't even want to begin imagining how she will lead a married life or fulfill duties at her husband's place…"
Janaardhan tries distracting his daughter "Oh Siya! Don't worry about all that – there is still plenty of time… I am sure she will… "
Siya whispers to her father guiltily "Ma is upset with me again….she is very upset…because every time she is, she talks about marriage. I feel like she just wants to send me away." she starts sniffling "I try very hard but I fall short every time don't I? I don't know what to do…"
The king puts his arm around her "Oh! Her anger is just to ensure that you turn out perfect Siya… but no one in this world is perfect ….everyone has to…"
Siya interrupts her father with a determined tone, as she wipes her tears "No pitaji! I will strive to be perfect. I will have to show her how I am capable of achieving what I set out to…" her eyes light up "Yes…. Yes… I know what I will do…" She gets up and swirls about, as she leaves the room "I will master my skills at cooking…tomorrow, I will get together with my friends to supervise an excellent menu and surprise her… I am sure she will be mighty pleased!"
The calm father suddenly realizes the implications of her words "What! No…Siya…Wait…. I don't think that is what your mother intended you to do… wait…"
Aryanagar military grounds - Outside the tent
Dharam and Veer wait patiently outside a large military tent repeatedly having to silence a nervous Bhalla. After a few moments, the inquisitive commander-in-chief steps out of the tent and asks the princes "Rajkumar Dharam… Veer! Why did you summon me? Is everything all right?"
The three of them look hesitantly at each other until Dharam finally speaks up in a low voice "Senapati… this morning you mentioned that we were attacked and robbed last night. Who gave you that piece of information?"
The confused commander explains everything "I was informed by Dhananjaya – the chief of the northern regiment. He was given all this information by one of the thugs…that thug was alive when Dhananjeya went to investigate. That's how I came to know that some Shramik rogues attacked you to rob you, without realizing that you were the princes of Aryanagar. Why… is there a problem Rajkumar?"
They suddenly hear a noise and shush each other. Sanjaya enquires worriedly "What is the problem? I am worried now… why are you being so cautious?"
Bhalla starts explaining the entire scenario in his usual manner. Veer shuts his mouth hurriedly when they hear the noise again.
After a while, Dharam continues "Basically Senapati, your source of information is not right" he pauses and then enquires "Do any of our soldiers or regiments have a blue uniform?"
Sanajaya is taken aback "Blue? No…. never…. none of our soldiers have ever had blue uniforms unless… "
A shadow suddenly steps into the light from the dark shadows. Dharam and Veer don't even try to hide their agitation, as they recognize the unwelcome figure standing before them.
The bewildered commander looks at their troubled faces and continues "Rajkumar Agni… have you ever spotted any soldiers sporting blue tunics in our kingdom? The only such soldiers I know are our rivals…soldiers from the rival kingdom of Gadhwar… but …"
Frustrated that Sanjaya had repeated everything to their sly cousin, Veer slaps his forehead.
Agni beams a cynical smile at Veer and then replies "Oh Senapati… Gadhwar… tch tch tch soldiers from rival kingdoms infiltrating our borders…I hope the princes are not undermining the strength of our defense. Anyway….you may go now…"
Sanjaya stands there stubbornly waiting for a response from Dharam, forcing Agni to repeat his orders to him.
On receiving no response, he bows courteously and gives Dharam a firm reassurance "Rajkumar Dharam! You do realize that if there is any issue...I will always be there, whenever you need me!"
As Sanjaya leaves, Veer turns away angrily; irritated by Agni's presence "Dharam let's leave now…" He catches Dharam and Bhalla by their arms and begins to lead them away.
Agni jeers at them, as they leave "Oh oh! Someone seems to be in a hurry…"
Dharam answers Agni angrily, as he is pulled away by Veer "Spying, interfering, eavesdropping, meddling – unfortunate to see a person's life revolving around this…and nothing else to do…"
Agni acts surprised "Oh what an honorable life you lead – fun, frolic, games, wasting time, throwing away your father's money…" he stops and smiles sarcastically as he mutters "Tch tch… and now spreading fairytales told by small children…unfortunately for her… poor girl…she was very pretty…but looks like she spoke too much…"
They abruptly stop in their paths as the undertone of Agni's statement dawns on them. Veer turns around furiously, feeling the heat of the blood gushing to his face as he glares at Agni. No sooner than any of them realize what is happening, he charges at Agni with all his might. He violently grabs him by the neck pushing him to the ground. Agni desperately tries fighting him off as he feels Veer's nails digging into his skin. Dharam and Bhalla run towards the duo as Veer repeatedly punches the startled Agni with one hand and throttles him by the other.
Veer fights his tears "How could you? What are you going to do to her? She is only a child… you cruel beast…if anything happens to her…"
Agni gags as he tries to speak "Leave me alone… you will repent for this Veer…. Let go of me…."
Dharam and Bhalla grasp Veer with all their strength but are unable the restrain their vehement partner. Their screams and pleas attract the attention of the soldiers in the tent, who come running to their rescue in no time. Three of the soldiers join Dharam in trying to loosen Veer's fierce grip for many tense moments, but with no success.
An exasperated Dharam shouts out "Veer listen to me… let go… Veer… my shoulders are aching…let go now… Veer… please…I don't want to lose you…" Veer's fingers automatically loosen and he comes to his senses as he feels his tears dampen his face. Agni chokes and coughs as he staggers to his feet bruised and shaken, while Veer stares blankly at his shivering hands. Unable and unwilling to face the questioning glances of those around him, he moves Dharam's hands from his shoulders and stands up emotionally. He paces away disregarding his brother's calls.
Palace of Aryanagar - Agnivardhan's private chamber
A loud scream echoes through the room as the young maid nervously applies the soothing balm on the scars on Agni's neck.
He glares at her contemptuously "Be careful you Shramik fool…"
After a brief while, the distressed maid pauses and continues hesitantly.
Agni hyperventilates as he swings frenziedly on his couch "Sometimes I doubt if he was ever an Aryavrat. No poise or dignity like the rest of us… a brute – that is what he is" he turns to look at the innocent maid, as she wraps her medicines and grabs her by the wrist "Did I just catch you smiling? Were you just laughing at me?"
She pleads in a distressed tone "No Rajkumar! I wouldn't even dream of something like that… never Rajkumar…"
Jaivardhan walks to his son and loosens his grip on her wrist. After ordering the relieved maid to leave, he sits next to his son with his arm around him and pacifies him for a while.
After ensuring that there was no one else in their chamber, Jaivardhan muses to himself "I can't believe the amount of rage bottled in that small persona"
Agni retorts agitatedly "Only if he wasn't Nivritti bua's son, I would have had him tortured…tortured till I was satisfied…and then killed. Hah! We are lucky that Dhananjeya warned me ahead…lucky that I managed to hear their conversation with Sanjaya…we can't afford to have anyone starting investigations into such things or we could get into trouble. They have proceeded to Sawai to see what has happened to the fate of the girl's family. Let them have a look at what Agni is capable of doing, if anyone steps in his way!"
Jaivardhan ushers him "The family will be destroyed...there will be no evidence of anyone having complained anything about the taxes or anyone having stated anything about any soldiers now…they can't bring this up in the assembly…calm down son…they can't harm us now…"
Agni shouts back "Well he has! He has…. pitaji…are you trying to support them?"
Jaivardhan replies patiently "No… Agni! Why would I try to support him?"
After a while, he asks Agni doubtfully "Did you say Sanjaya mentioned something about the Gadhwar guards?"
Agni replies in a vexed fashion "No… apparently that wretched child mentioned that she spotted soldiers with blue uniforms. On discussing, they now have doubts that it could be the Gadhwar soldiers!" he looks at his father and continues "Oh Lord! The soldiers of Gadhwar… they infiltrate the borders only to drink, loot and enjoy… why do we have to put up with them?"
Jaivardhan "Well… we would need to tolerate them son… we don't want our plans going awry, right? Anyway, I just hope Dharam and Veer wouldn't find out anything about…"
Agni replies firmly "Don't worry father… they wouldn't…they just wouldn't! We will always have spies looking out for them…"
Aryanagar - Village of Sawai
Veer repeatedly tries to search for a logical explanation for the ferocity of his actions, as he makes the long journey to Sawai followed by a concerned Dharam and Bhalla. Following Veer in silence, the confused duo of Dharam and Bhalla glance at each other every now and then, realizing that the young prince needed time to recover from the ordeal. Approaching the familiar lane, they slow down their horses to a trot. Gradually proceeding towards the small house, the three riders dismount one after the other.
Veer stands paralyzed as he realizes his fears come true and closes his eyes, overcome by defeat. Wishing he could destroy Agni at that very moment, Veer painfully observes how the home that had housed a cheerful family less than a day ago; was empty, pillaged and burnt down. Dharam falters to the deserted porch with a heavy heart, pushing the broken door away. Neither of the brothers musters courage to be able to speak to the other for a long while. With no one around, in the deserted expanse of area to enquire, Veer and Dharam resign to their worst fears about the fate of the family "So... as Agni vowed... the small child's family has indeed been destroyed... the girl's life ended n...n...needlessly...just so Agni could keep his vile acts secretive ..."
Eventually, Bhalla looks around anxiously "Veer… Dharam… it is very lonely around here… and getting dark too…Maharaj forbid us from riding alone here, only this morning…" On receiving no answer from the numb princes, he continues imploring them to start for Aryanagar as soon as possible. When his repeated persuasion yields little results, he holds the reigns of his horse and starts leading it away, as though he were leaving. After a few seconds, he thinks the better of it and comes back, begging them to accompany him.
Much to Bhalla's relief, Veer and Dharam finally decide to leave. They glance at the forlorn house for the last time and then lead their horses away from there quietly.
A calm voice from behind reverberates softly through the silence "How many Shramiks undergo the same thing day in and day out… it is only when it happens to someone you care for, do you realize how horrible the situation is…"
The three royals look back to see a strong young man with fine features donning a dhoti and a torn shawl, standing calmly. Bhalla stares at him, nervously clutching the handle of his sword, while they wait for him to continue.
He grins at Bhalla and replies slowly "My name is Dhruv Kumar… don't worry… I am not here to hurt you... I am just a passerby… a nobody…"
OSR SAMYUKTA Part 5 – In the quest to find out the truth
Aryanagar – Village of Sawai
"My name is Dhruv Kumar… don't worry… I am not here to hurt you... I am just a passerby… a nobody…" Hard pressed for time, the three of them usher their horses and start walking without looking back.
Dhruv adjusts his turban and continues unabashed "Unlike you… you are all 'somebody'…I am a 'nobody'… just a 'nobody' in this dreaded kingdom…" Dhruv's provocative dialogues start irritating the already-disturbed princes.
Veer replies "As it is, we have had a very testing day. Please just leave us alone…"
The stranger doesn't cease his charade "Oh! You go ahead…I came to this deserted house in the hope of finding something to eat, but the shelves were empty!" he yawns dramatically "Poor folks! Paying more than half their earnings in taxes, they possibly starved too!"
Dumbfounded, Bhalla swings around "You arrogant man! Do you realize who you are talking to? This is the future king of Aryanagar! Ask for pardon. Ask for pardon, or be prepared to die!"
Dhruv acts surprised "Face death? You mean...like this unfortunate family just did?"
Listening to Dhruv's claims confirming the unfortunate family's destiny; the appalled brothers look at each other in dismay. Dharam swiftly removes his sharp knife, walks towards Dhruv menacingly, holds its tip against Dhruv's throat and screams at him "Are you trying to blame us for their death? I will spend my entire life if required, but I will ensure I throw Agni behind bars. I will make him hang his head in shame in front of the assembly…"
Dhruv replies calmly "With what proof Rajkumar? It is not possible to jail anyone…all evidence has been destroyed. No one would testify in fear of their lives – be it the Shramiks, Aryavarts or even the nobles!"
Dharam harshly pushes him against a rough tree trunk while Dhruv looks at him unperturbed. Taken aback by his fearlessness, Dharam shouts "Don't paint such a horrid picture of the state of affairs. We are from Aryanagar too… we would be aware if incidents like this happened…"
Dhruv retaliates "You are ignorant of all this since you have just returned from the Gurukul. Besides, things are far better off at the capital since it is the residence of the king and other royals. Outside the capital, conditions go from bad to worse… "
Dharam grits his teeth with anger "You bloody Shramik …. You are just making up all this to portray my father and us Aryavarts in a negative light…"
Dhruv speaks softly "Rajkumar! I am an Aryavart myself!" the anger on their faces turns to one of disbelief, as Dhruv continues "Yes I am…I am the son of a minister in your court… Chandrapal"
After Dharam lowers his knife, Dhruv gradually goes on to explain how corrupt soldiers extorted massive taxes from Shramiks illegally, how dishonest nobles were constantly bribed, righteous officials were kept unaware and how innocent people were threatened into secrecy. The horrified Dharam and veer listen all along, debating mentally whether to believe him or not.
Veer finally breaks his silence "Since you seem to know everything, you would possibly have heard about a general called Dhananjeya…"
Dhruv smiles sarcastically "Who doesn't know Dhananjeya around here? I have heard rumours that the corrupt officer reports directly to Rajkumar Agnivardhan and any news directly reaches his ears …probably that is how this unfortunate family met their fate so soon..." he mutters softly "To add to the problems…now soldiers from rival kingdoms have started walking into the Aryanagar border fearlessly and adding to the terror here…"
Daunted, Dharam drops to the ground. Doubts about the positive illusions he had of his kingdom and its administration race through his mind. Veer sits next to him and places his hand on his back comfortingly. Looking at the princes' pitiable plight, Dhruv continues "On learning that you saved the life of that girl once, I realized that there was hope after all… I know I have risked my life telling you all this, but I wanted to make use of this opportunity to meet you …you could change all this for the better Rajkumar…"
Understanding what was going on in his brother's mind, Veer quickly tries changing the course of the conversation "What are you doing here in this forest all alone anyway…away from home?"
Dhruv fiddles with his shawl "I was brought up rich, spoilt and ignorant…but this is my home now… I changed…" he pauses "I have to take leave now Rajkumar… my children will be hungry… I have a big family with 25 mouths to feed …"
The princes stare at Dhruv wide-eyed. Unable to contain his curiosity, Bhalla stammers along "Oh! … 25…I mean…ch…children… didn't realize…you look young… what made you abandon your home and change so…s…suddenly?"
Dhruv tries to avoid the questions and starts walking away, but Veer stops him in his path "When you know all this about us… its only fair we know some things about you too…"
Dhruv smiles to himself "I am not married… my family are my children… children who have been orphaned, as their parents were either imprisoned or killed…" he sighs "and I changed when I fell in love… when I realized her sufferings … an admirable Shramik girl… Sakshi…" The three of them remain awed, as Dhruv concludes "I hope all your questions have been answered now, Rajkumar". He wraps the shawl around himself, bows lightly and paces away from there.
As Veer watches Dhruv walk away, he feels a sudden flutter of joy. The stranger's experiences leave him in an inexplicable and overwhelmingly happy trance, till he is distracted by Dharam.
Dharam calls out to his brother "Veer… what happened? You seem lost…" he continues with determination "Agni and Jai chacha have always been dishonest…but this level of corruption and cold-bloodedness….and pitaji has been kept unaware of all this…" he pauses "I was devastated… no…now I will not be - I can't afford to be! If the pride of my lineage is indeed being destroyed by corrupt people, I will put a stop to it" he then indicates in Dhruv's direction "However, before telling father anything I need to learn the truth myself. I will find out… "
The amused Bhalla then interrupts the brothers "Can love change someone so much?"
Dharam smiles briefly "I don't know… he fell in love with a Shramik girl…he changed…. Even if I ever did fall in love one day, I don't see myself changing or suffering so much for anyone…"
Veer nods negatively "Dharam - falling in love 'is' suffering…so… better not to fall in love – end of story"
After sharing a few laughs, the boys restart their journey back home to the capital; discussing about the evening's occurrences and making plans to investigate all the shocking revelations that they had come to learn of.
Palace of Niphaud - Siya's room
A pretty fair girl stands disapprovingly, listening to a lengthy stern monologue by Siya; primarily a warning her to keep her voice low. The princess then swiftly turns to the rest of her friends in a thrilled manner "Have you got the rest of the items that we need for tomorrow?"
The girls remove a variety of tiny silk pouches from the folds of their garments and place them on her couch obediently. Nanda removes a long scroll containing a thorough set of instructions and haughtily hands it to Siya, much to everyone's amusement. Siya takes the scroll from her angry friend and smiles at her. Seeing no reaction from Nanda, Siya meekly kneels in front of Nanda and holds her ears to apologize. Forcing Nanda to break into a smile, the adorable princess makes up with her hastily. Following the brief interlude, the girls once again resume their enthusiasms; when they watch Siya's culinary plans gradually falling into place
Looking at the display in front of her, Siya exclaims "Wow! Look at how exotic these spices look" she takes the scroll and glances through it "We now have everything needed to make the most delicious meal ever cooked. The queen of Niphaud will be proud of her daughter when she realizes Siya is as perfect as her…"
Amazed, they start examining the ingredients one after another and debating their purposes till they suddenly hear the sound of footsteps approaching them. Frightened, the girls quickly try hiding the ingredients. Siya fills both her hands with the remaining pouches and holds it behind her to ensure her plans don't get foiled prematurely After the announcement of his arrival by the guard, the king strides in.
He smiles and walks towards her "Siya, I am leaving for the border tonight as some urgent work has cropped up there… I will be back by tomorrow night…" he pauses, as he sees her worried expression and then notices her hands stuffed with the bags "Now, what is this you are up to?"
She shushes him immediately "Pitaji! Be hush... you will ruin my well-contemplated plans…I have procured everything that I need for an excellent menu for you and ma ... don't you trust me?"
The king replies anxiously "Siya…trust you? I want to trust you every time... but whenever I do, I end up falling in trouble too…"
She looks hurt "Pitaji…how could you… you know what my intentions are…"
Janardhan sighs loudly "Siya…I realize all your plans are well intended…" he tells himself "the only problem is that the results don't turn out that way…" he pauses "I will have someone oversee all work you are going to do tomorrow. As I will not be here, I don't want you getting into trouble…"
Siya pleads with him repeatedly "Please...please don't father...I am capable of doing it myself..." She hugs him and smiles lovingly.
He takes a moment to enjoy his fatherly instincts and appreciate the charm in her delightful eyes and then replies "Ok but promise me you will be careful and safe…"
Siya giggles excitedly "I will be careful as always father…"
He takes a deep breath "Yes…yes….Siya…"
Palace of Aryanagar – The palace temple
The lovely divine aura around the large marble hall of the grand palace temple is augmented by the bright faces of numerous royal members chanting prayers in harmony to the sounds of the bells, cymbals and the drums. The royal priest fondly performs the Holy Arti to the exquisite large idol of Goddess Lakshmi that is adorned with countless rose petals, floral garlands and sparkling diamond ornaments.
Veer and Dharam silently sneak through the religious crowd and move towards the queens, emoting expressions of thorough devotion, as they stand behind them.
Veer whispers to Dharam while clapping his hands and nodding his head in keeping with his devotional act "Do you think ma or Swathi mami saw us?"
Dharam's replies with shut eyes "I don't know about ma or Nivritti bua...I told you I am worried about what is going on with the Gadhwar soldiers...I have to somehow get to Gadhwar to find out..."
Veer looks alarmed and gulps "Dharam! Gadhwar? That seems too adventurous even for me..." he then thinks to himself for a while and shouts loudly with excitement "I have an idea"
Nivritti and Swathi turn around and stare at Veer while he quickly closes his eyes and pretends to continue singing the Arti, totally out of tune. The confused queens frown at each other and then turn back to concentrate on the religious proceedings.
Veer moves closer to Dharam and mutters very slowly "The kingdom of Niphaud is on friendly terms with us, unlike those rogues at Gadhwar! How about staying at Niphaud at day and traveling the narrow pass from there to Gadhwar at night..."
Dharam looks at Veer surprised "This is a dangerous plan...besides, this will take us a few days Veer...what would we tell everyone..." he indicates in Agni's direction "…and what about this spying owl Agni..."
Veer raises his eyebrows "How about the pretext of a leisure trip to Niphaud?"
Dharam nods "Even if we stay at Niphaud, I don't want to put anyone in trouble...we need something that would allow us get close to the Gadhwar defense ministry, without the king of Niphaud realizing we were staying there to investigate..." his face lights up "how about disguising ourselves as weapon merchants and meeting the commander at Gadhwar covertly...we can at least get an idea about what's going on..."
Veer smirks "Carry weapons from Aryanagar border? Your pet...owl...would find out in no time!"
Dharam replies "No...we can source our weapons at Niphaud...we only need a few samples"
Disturbed by their constant whispering, the annoyed queens turn around and Nivritti addresses Dharam "Dharam! Don't you know the words to the prayers? Come here and sing with me…"
Dharam stammers in reply "No… no… bua I do…" not listening to his protests, she grabs him by the arm and forces him to stand next to her. Veer closes his eyes and continues with his chants innocently.
After the formalities come to an end, the priest distributes the holy offerings to the audience starting from Maharaj Aryavardhan and Maharani Swathi.
As Jaivardhan and Agni walk towards them to receive the prasad, Veer glares at them; images of the small girl's face again flashing in his mind. Realizing he was surrounded by all the monarchs, Veer looks away to control his anger. Rejoicing at Veer's aggravation, Agni asks Dharam sarcastically "Oh when did you both arrive...attending to some important business, I suppose..."
Standing up for his brother, Dharam reciprocates expressively "Oh my God! Agni! How did you get this scar on your neck? Did you do something horrifically wrong?"
Jaivardhan and Agni stare at Dharam and Veer livid with rage, while Maharaj Aryavardhan turns to Agni "Son, when and why did this happen?"
Agni replies slowly "No Maharaj, I was strolling in the military grounds when a mad animal attacked me. Don't worry" he continues with a sly smile "Anyway...my friends will be arriving here tomorrow...so...it shouldn't be too difficult to hunt the creature down..."
Veer listens to his dialogues and smirks with a slow superior smile.
Dharam then turns to his baffled father to request him "Pitaji, I want to express a desire of mine...I have heard that there is a natural spring in the beautiful gardens at Niphaud. We have been so busy ever since we arrived from the Gurukul...we would like to tour...learn about new customs...see new sights..." Listening to Dharam's pleas, Agni and Jaivardhan turn to each other puzzled.
Aryavardhan frowns "Oh I see! You both have been busy ever since you came back from the Gurukul? How refreshing to know...busy with what?"
Having listened in to their chats, Nivritti approaches them "Why don't you allow him to go bhaiya. Once he ascends the throne, where would he find the time for all this..."
After pondering for a while, Aryavardhan addresses them "Ok… Dharam…Veer… you both can go ahead… but only with personal guards and protection...and you must return within three days...Agni might not be able to join you as his friends are arriving here tomorrow…" Agni and Jaivardhan look away in displeasure, as they observe the growing delight of the princes. The king continues sternly "You can start tomorrow morning so that you can reach there by noon. I will send an official message to Maharaj Janardhan tonight… they should be aware of your arrival well in advance."
The exhilarated boys take the blessings of the Lord and the remaining elders before dispersing to their respective chambers. They toss and turn in their beds all night, as they feel intimidated by the frightening experiences they might face, and yet thrilled by the prospects for a new adventure.
Palace of Niphaud – Corridor outside queen's chamber
Nanda discreetly tip toes her way from Siya's room through the long grandiose corridor. She clings tightly to her upper garment in an attempt to camouflage two silk pouches containing the spices. In spite of putting on a casual expression, she is unable to overcome her increasing nervousness when she passes by the corridor near the queen's chamber. She continues swiftly until she thinks she overhears a few words coming from the queen's chamber that catch her attention "Queen Vaidehi… her son…Rajkumar… interested… asking for…Siya's hand…."
Taken aback by the bits of the conversation she heard so far, she is unable to decide whether to proceed towards her friends or stay back and listen. Finally, curiosity wins the better of her and she peeks into the room slowly to catch sight of what was transpiring within. She sees an excited queen resting at the far end of her chamber surrounded by royal scrolls, discussing matters with her chief maid. The impatient girl takes a step back and places her ear close to the wall.
After a while, she hears the voice of the delighted queen "Prince Dharmavardhan… Aryanagar… visiting tonight…staying…Niphaud gardens…"
Nanda places her hand on her mouth in absolute shock. As she concocts the two messages into her own theory, she becomes overwhelmed by the gravity of her realization. She begins running towards the kitchen to let her friend know of the latest news.
OSR SAMYUKTA Part 6 – The feast
Palace of Niphaud – Kitchen preparation area
The bright noon sun falls strongly on the hectic spectacle unfolding in the kitchen, as the girls wipe the sweat off her foreheads. Everyone tries steering clear of the annoyed maids, who are busy removing masses of vegetable peelings and spilt flour from the messy floor. One girl who is stirring a large cauldron of boiling stew argues with another, who is frantically searching for her stock of missing ingredients. The noisy cackling oil and stone grinder drown any chance of a sane conversation. A bevy of maids run about following various orders by Siya's friends, bumping into each other often. Siya springs around the busy room constantly worrying aloud and instructing her friends and maids alike. She suddenly feels a hard pat on her back and winces in pain. She turns around to see her plump tomboyish friend standing there enjoying a juicy bit of sugarcane.
Daksha speaks as she slurps on the stalk "Siya… wow...the preparations are in full force… you seem to have started off without me…"
Siya places her hand on her hips "Daksha! Started off without you? You are late…I don't have much time now… my mother will be awake soon"
Suddenly, Nanda barges into the kitchen bringing everything to an immediate standstill. As she desperately tries to catch up on her breath, a worried Siya fetches her some water to drink.
Daksha mocks Nanda "I didn't realize Siya's room was this far away from the kitchen…"
Nanda nods her head and blurts incoherently "Siya… Maharani ji …not asleep yet…I overheard…conversation…. Rajkumar … Dharmavardhan….from… Aryanagar… coming... royal proposal" Everyone stares at each other perplexed, unable to make anything out of the information provided by her.
The frustrated princess controls herself from losing her temper with her edgy friend "Stop! Nanda… wait…take your time…. speak slowly…what is it that you overheard…"
Nanda pauses and starts again slowly "Siya, I heard your m…mother discussing a message she received. Apparently, Maharani Vaidehi's son Rajkumar Dharamavardhan of Aryanagar has asked for your h…hand in m…marriage. Your mother also seemed very keen about it." As Siya's worst fears are gradually confirmed, the colour begins to drain from her face. Speechless, she slumps on the wooden stool while Nanda continues "S…Siya he is coming here to tour the gardens…"
No sooner than they hear the news, all the girls start screaming and celebrating in feverish excitement. They eventually notice Siya's face and hush down. Siya's eyes start welling up and she utters tearfully "I don't want to … I don't want to get married… I don't want to leave Niphaud... I don't want to… I have to speak to pitaji…I don't want this proposal… why hasn't ma told me about this…" Her friends begin feeling helpless not knowing how to console her.
Daksha keeps her sugarcane aside and sits on the floor next to Siya. Siya continues weeping "I don't want to leave Niphaud…pitaji…ma…my palace…my room…my friends…I don't want to move far away!" Moved by Siya's tears, Nanda also starts sobbing; adding to the existing chaos.
Daksha tries calming the situation "Nanda…Siya…both of you stop crying now…oh Siya…what do you mean by far away…Aryanagar is our neighbour…you can come and go, as and when you please… in future; imagine if you had to wed a Rajkumar from a kingdom far...far...far away..."
Siya starts wailing "I don't want to get married… I was not even asked or informed…I don't know Maharani Vaidehi... I don't like Rajkumar Dharmavardhan… I don't like him…"
The confused Daksha asks "You have not even met him yet Siya! What if he is kind and noble?"
Siya looks away stubbornly, refusing to answer.
Daksha adds romantically "I don't know about you girls; but I have heard of tales from other kingdoms. When princes ask for the hand of a maiden, they shower her with the most beautiful gifts..." Siya silently observes a dreamy glimmer in all her friends' eyes. Unwittingly, she wipes her tears and listens curiously, as Daksha carries on with her tempting lore "necklaces of sapphires…ruby anklets…diamonds… silks… perfumes…" Daksha pauses to give her an idea "Siya accept his gifts at first… you can refuse the proposal later if you don't like him!"
The princess forgets her resolve and starts giggling at the joke with everyone else.
Eventually, the rest of her friends add to the ongoing speculations one after another; amplified by sounds of teasing sighs and giggles "Imagine if he was handsome"…"Aryanagar is a powerful kingdom"… "He must be very brave and chivalrous"… "His queen will indeed be very lucky"
As the wonderful prospects mentioned by her friends begin to excite her, she forgets about her apprehensions and starts blushing unknowingly, while her friends continue to contemplate "I am sure touring the gardens is just eyewash. He is here to meet Siya"…"Maybe he wants to personally propose to her"…"Will it be love at first sight…"
Realizing that everyone had noticed her growing enthusiasm to meet the prince; Siya closes her face overcome by embarrassment. Nanda suddenly yells out to interrupt their ceaseless discussions "Stop it! Stop it all of you… he is probably arriving this evening with his friends… what about this dinner… Maharani ji might be here any minute… she might enquire about the cooks… what are we going to tell her…"
Snapping out of her momentary fantasies; Siya panics, while the rest of the girls immediately scamper to finish their chores as soon as possible. With the news of the unexpected arrival of the guests, Siya suddenly becomes frightened by the repercussions of her actions. Having sent all the cooks away, Siya is unable to think of what could be done to rectify the situation and paces worriedly. Much to her relief, she hears a comforting assurance from Daksha
"Oh! I have an idea Siya…I will take care of all this – don't worry!"
Kingdom of Niphaud - The borders
As they cross the borders of scenic Niphaud; Dharam trots along gently pressing his painful forehead, desperately trying to not to think of the constant groans in the background. Veer splashes some water on his sunken face and flexes his stiff back to perk up his spirits. An entourage of loyal bodyguards follows them silently on horseback. A visibly exhausted Bhalla continues to whine and moan endlessly about the journey, the weather and the transportation.
Finally Dharam surrenders "Bhalla… had we known, we would have brought you in a palki…"
Bhalla wipes his face "Thank God we are here! I am tired. We have been riding since morning."
Veer glares at him "Riding since morning? Well… that is only because we have stopped five times… if you are not thirsty, you are hungry…then again sleepy… again hungry… thirsty…"
Bhalla grumbles "That is a lot of gratitude for making this difficult journey to help you both…"
Veer teases him "Oh! I thought you were coming along because of Niphaud's famous cuisine!"
Bhalla retorts angrily "Veer…I will never travel along with you again… ever…only then would you realize the importance of my company…"
Veer grins at Bhalla cynically, while the rest of them laugh heartily at the entertaining duo.
They continue their prattle all the way, until they reach the gates of the palace.
On arriving at the palace, they are taken aback by the eclectic welcome overseen by the ministers and nobles. As their horses are led away, Dharam and Veer walk through the flower strewn pathways, showered by cooling waters of sandal and rose. They enjoy the attention of the servants and guards that escort them, with pompous music and fanfare playing at the backdrop. The brothers appreciate the sprawling greenery leading to the palace, not minding the worn-out Bhalla tagging along behind them.
The princes are eventually ushered to the privacy of extremely lavish guest rooms to rest and relax. No sooner, Bhalla dozes off on his lush bed; while Veer enjoys the picturesque evening outside the palace halls through the extensive windows of their room. Dharam however, remains silent; finding himself distracted by a strange inexplicable feeling of excitement and happiness.
Palace of Niphaud - Siya's bedroom
Disguised as a maid; Daksha sashays into the room pleased with herself, and announces "The princes have arrived! Did you hear all the fanfare? How exciting! Oh! How do I look in this attire?" Looking at Nanda's and Siya's perplexed faces, she whispers "Don't worry Siya… I have taken care of everything - the cooks, the food…everything" she shrugs "I don't know if the dishes are tasty but I have decorated them well…they look good enough…I am…"
Her explanations are interrupted by an abrupt announcement following which; the queen strides gallantly into the room. Siya stares at Nanda in horror, while Daksha quickly turns away to hide her face. The queen proceeds to sit next to the princess and talks to her, holding her young daughter's face affectionately "Siya…your father has sent word that he will not be back tonight, so you go ahead and have your dinner. We have some important guests from Aryanagar staying over and I will be tending to them" she then reflects slowly "I have something important that I want to talk to you about…we will speak tomorrow. I have to leave now…"
After giving her a small peck on her forehead, the queen stands up to leave.
Siya catches her mother's hand "I was hoping to have dinner together ma …"
The queen nods her head "Siya, today is Chathurthi! Have you forgotten that I fast for
Chathurthi?"
The queen smiles at Siya's innocence lovingly and then leaves the room to get back to her duties.
Daksha immediately lifts her dupatta in relief, while Siya's smile disappears "Pitaji was right… Every time I try, something always goes wrong. The first time I make a feast for my parents… pitaji is not here… ma is fasting…now I don't want to eat too... all my effort in vain…"
Daksha replies sweetly "Shhh! Don't say that Siya…how special that prince Dharamvardhan himself is going to be eating your delicious food…" Suddenly realizing it was time for the evening meals, Daksha pauses alarmed "oh my we need to rush to the dining hall…" she grabs Nanda by the wrist and they rush out, after bidding the worried princess a hasty farewell.
Palace of Niphaud - Dining Hall
The three young famished men wait in anticipation on comfortable ornate rosewood platforms as bevies of maids bring in numerous golden pots and bowls filled with varieties of food. Relieved at the thought of a sumptuous meal, they smile as shining golden plates are laid out in front of them. Under the supervision of the queen, the dishes are served in meticulous order. They say a brief prayer before commencing their meal. Dharam suddenly hears a faint voice and opens his eyes to see a chubby maid staring at him, as she places a sweet in his plate.
Daksha whispers "Salutations Rajkumar! I have a personal message for you… I think you will be pleased to know that this meal has been personally prepared for you by princess Siya herself…" The confused Dharam nods his head in acknowledgement, watching Daksha observing him carefully. She admires his magnetic personality and becomes elated by the fact that he seemed like the perfect suitor for Siya. Flashing Dharam a naughty smile, she then moves over to serve the others and looks up by chance at Veer. Not expecting to come to face with such an attractive person, she becomes spellbound by Veer's charming looks, his fair tone and golden hair. Dazed by his beauty, she serves him one sweet after another; while Veer becomes conscious of her bold gazes. Veer stammers "I think this should be enough...please...please...that should do...I can't..."
She is finally shaken out of her trance when Dharam speaks up "I think that should be enough! Veer is putting on a lot of weight, as it is" Veer glares at Dharam, while Daksha becomes abashed and quickly departs from there without serving Bhalla. The three of them look at each other puzzled and then smile formally at the queen, who is blissfully unaware of Daksha's interactions.
No sooner than the boys taste their first morsel, their expressions change from one of confusion to desperation. Dharam waits for the queen to look away and indicates to Veer "What is this?"
Veer nods his head "Seems like kichdi… but tastes like something else all together…." Veer then turns to Bhalla "I thought you said the cuisine of Niphaud was spectacular…this food is very strange" Bhalla shrugs innocently in reply and resumes his dinner, unmindful of its taste.
Dharam whispers "Apparently a princess Siya has personally prepared it! Wonder what she wanted to make…" As the queen and the maids smile at them, they gulp a few mouthfuls in order to keep up the formalities. They try and test various combinations, only to find one worse than the other. After a point of time, Dharam and Veer give up and pause to exhale deeply.
Dharam then tries to make conversation with the queen "Ma conveys her regards to you…oh! By the way, have you had your dinner Maharani?" As the queen coyly informs them about her Chathurthi fast, Veer gets a flash of an idea to help rid them of the torture.
He acts perturbed and slaps his forehead "Did you say today was Chaturthi? Oh my… how did we forget?" he turns to Dharam… "Did you forget too? Ma had asked us to fast for Chaturthi" The queen becomes increasingly confused, as Veer continues babbling about the fast.
Dharam gradually takes the cue "Oh Lord! Yes…I can't neglect it...Chathurthi…what do we do"
When the princes are waiting for the queen to speak up, Daksha barges into the room along with the rest of the maids, carrying more potfuls of food. Veer feels his mouth becoming parched, as he looks at the flirty maid approaching him with a stew.
Finally, the queen commands the maids "Wait! The princes are fasting today... get them some fruits and warm milk instead...take away their plates please...." The queen smiles at the boys tenderly and then takes their leave, to supervise the remaining arrangements for the night.
In obedience to the queen's orders, the maids begin to take away their plates. Daksha picks up Veer's plate, staring at him all the while. When she leaves eventually, Veer breathes a sigh of relief. As Nanda brings them golden bowls to rinse their hands, Dharam whispers to Veer "May princess Siya never subject anyone else to the tortures of her culinary skills…"
Veer laughs aloud, till he notices Nanda's angry stares; pertaining to their comments on her friend. After she exits, Veer adds "Don't you think the girls in this palace are stranger than the food?"
Palace of Niphaud - Siya's bedroom
Siya stares at herself in the mirror as she gently takes off her sparkling earrings and loosens her long black tresses. She fiddles with the rings in her jewellery box feeling a surge of excitement when she remembers the discussions they had about her suitor. She wonders about the prince and how he had come to ask for her hand. Noticing Nanda and Daksha walking into the room, she stands up immediately. When no one speaks up, Siya blurts out "what happened? Tell me… was the dinner all right? Did ma find out?" she asks meekly "How was…was…the prince?"
Daksha dreamily sinks into the couch, leaving Nanda the task of explaining all the details about the evening. Nanda mechanically describes how everything went smoothly right from the princes' arrival up until the dinner itself. Bored by Nanda's sordid details, Siya becomes restless to gain more information about the guests themselves and turns to Daksha. Concerned about her silence, she sits next to her.
Finally Daksha speaks while staring into oblivion "How handsome was he...magnificent...fair..." Siya feels a rush of blood in her face as she hears her friend's words.
Daksha continues "those naughty looks..."
Siya becomes astonished "Prince Dharmavardhan...naughty looks...What do you mean?"
Daksha composes herself "Oh no...no...the Rajkumar was tall and lean...of tanned complexion... black hair...princely" Increasingly delighted by the descriptions; Siya listens ardently, as Daksha continues "He was chubby…fair… with golden hair"
Again baffled by Daksha's conflicting information, Siya turns to Nanda and demands an explanation "Fair… tanned…lean… chubby …black hair…golden hair…what is all this?"
Nanda takes a deep breath "Don't worry Siya… Prince Dharmavardhan is indeed very handsome…everything a girl could possibly dream of…but… he... he..."
