PART 45

She was floating in a sea of pain, alone, drifting, anchorless….all alone! She panicked wildly, looked desperately around her. There was nobody around! All the ones she loved were gone!

She screamed out their names: PRATEEEEK! There was no reply!
ANGAAAADDD! There was only silence around her.
JOSHHHHH! ….The silence of death…..the sea turned to blood ….she was drowning, pulled under by the hungry hands of Death!
NAHIIIN……PRATEEEEK…..she struggled wildly against the red waves sucking her down, tasting blood on her lips….she gurgled, drowning again in blood….then somebody was pulling her up…..lifting and shifting her!

Kripa groaned heavily and tried to open her eyes to see who it was…..but everything was grey and hazy….she was afraid to open her eyes! She didn't want to see the blood…..NOOOO….she refused to see the blood!
She didn't want to remember!

Mrs. Kapoor! Mrs. Kapoor! ….can you hear me?
A man in white shook her gently….he shone a little torch in her eyes, then turned to the Nurse : No, her eyes are still dilated, pulse is weak. Give her another shot and let her sleep if off . Poor lady …lost her husband, child is missing. She can lose her mind… shes in traumatized shock…. keep her warm, increase fluids, keep me informed about her status!

Kripa had sunk into oblivion ! Her mind wasnt working anymore. Bombarded with multiple shocks, it was enough for anybody to lose their senses.
All the tragedies piling up in her life had snapped her mind. Josh's death was the final straw!

Nishant had found her unconscious on the floor just minutes after she discovered Josh's body. He had called the ambulance, Kripa was now in the Hospital, being treated for shock.

Nishant still sat on the bed in Zaib's taped-off room…..he stared at the blood-stained chair where Josh had been found, shot to death! The body had just been taken away by the Local Authorities for post-mortem. Forensic teams had taken fingerprints and tested the chair and the room for evidence. The blood splattered on the chair had been tested and cleaned…..but the presence of violent death still permeated the room!

Nishant shuddered and gripped his head with his hands. He couldn't believe that Josh was DEAD! Brutally murdered with a gunshot to his head!

Josh had been his colleague and friend for the last 3 years….they had worked on many cases together, especially International crimes. They had grown close together, almost like brothers. Nishant swore to himself whoever had committed this heinous crime wasn't going to escape the hands of the Law! Killing a CBI Officer was an international crime…..Interpol and Hongkong Authorities will have to assist him in catching the killer. He had already notified CBI Headquarters in Delhi, to inform Josh's relatives there.

Josh was DEAD! Kripa was in the Hospital, suffering from post-traumatic shock, Prateek was missing, had been kidnapped. Nishant's investigation was in shambles, Zaib had escaped. What else could go wrong?

Nishant rubbed his face wearily, brushing off the tears he hadnt let his agents witness. If only he had not summoned Josh to Hongkong for this case, had not allowed Josh to bring Kripa and Prateek here. Ever since Kripa identified Zaib as Angad, matters had spiralled out of control! Josh had been too preoccupied and disturbed about Kripa's relationship with Zaib. He had lost his focus and his dedication to the Agency. He had started making mistakes…..this one was fatal!

Nishant pondered on what Josh had said about his suspicions on Kanan….that she was lying and was invloved in Prateek's kidnapping. He found it hard to believe….Kanan had been a CBI operative for last 5 years….she had never given them reason for complaint. Then why did Josh suspect her?

He had sent Neeraj to bring Kanan for questioning. He looked around the room….it was so ironic that Josh had died in Angad's room…..Angad who was now Zaib…..Angad who was Kripa's first husband and biological father of Josh's son, Prateek.

Josh had refused to believe till the last few days that Zaib WAS Angad……..he was so afraid of losing Kripa and the child! He loved them more than anything…….Nishant remembered how Josh had cribbed and whined during their last trip to Sydney….it had been a 2 months assignment and Josh had been missing them like Hell! He would get drunk in the evenings and confide to Nishant about his wife, her past….about Angad…how she still loved Angad and couldn't forget him.

And then the irony of Fate! Their very next assignment had been to track a killer who turned out to be Angad….in a new avatar! Nishant had made arrangements for Josh to bring his family…so they could have a vacation here. But the vacation turned out to be Josh's last journey!
Josh had been so excited to spend time with his wife and son….now he was dead and his kid was missing!
Nishant hoped with all his heart that Prateek would be found soon….he had sent 2 agents to the streets outside to enquire about the child. And if Kanan was really guilty in the kid's disappearance, she would be punished severely.

Josh, main terey maut ko zaya nahin honay doonga….main terey khoon ka poora hisaab loonga…and I will bring the killer to justice…..main vaada karta hoon, Dost!
Nishant wiped his moist eyes as he heard sounds outside the door.
KAUN HAI? He asked cautiously.

SIR! MAIN HOON NEERAJ….AND KANAN IS WITH ME!
COME IN!

Nishant asked Kanan to sit on the couch and interrogated her.
When you were in the lift, tumney kisiko nahin dekha?

No Sir! I didn't notice….do aadmi the wahan, lekin mainey unhey theek se nahin dekha….

Kya tumhey isliye CBI ne training dee ke tum yeh chhoti moti cheezein bhi notice naa kar sako?….Nishant chided her sarcastically.

I am sorry, Sir! Lekin bachchein jab baatein kartey hain, toh badey distracted ho jaatey hain…..main bhi Prateek ki baatein sun rahi thi….isiliye un logon ko notice nahin kar saki.

Phir kya hua? Nishant wanted to hear her statements again.

Sir, kisiney mujhey peechhey se maara, sar per…aur main behosh ho gayi….uskey baad pata nahin kya hua….wo dono shayad Prateek ko utha le gaye…jab aankh khuli toh lift Lobby mein thi….

Tumhey sar ke UPAR vaar kiya tha ya sar ke peechhey?

Kanan quickly thought (If they hit me from behind, I am supposed to get a blow on the back of my head)……her eyes were shifty…Nishant noticed that look of nervousness…the woman was telling a lie!

Sar…sar…ke peechhey …..Kanan said a little hesitantly.
Neeraj, wo photos dikhao zara…..Nishant asked to see the pictures that Josh had mentioned on the phone.

Neeraj quickly fished out his camera again: Sir yeh rahey incident ke photos….lift jab Lobby mein pahunchi toh main wahan maujood tha…I took these pics, Sir! Neeraj proudly showed them.

Hmmmm….Nishant studied the photos closely…..Kanan, in tasveeron mein tum seedhi leti huyi ho….agar peechhey se vaar hota toh tum mooh ke bal girti….why are you lying on your back instead of being flat on your face on the ground?

Kanan blinked several times and swallowed: Sir, mujhey kya pata? Main toh behosh thi….aap kisisey bhi poochh leejiye….Neeraj bhi Lobby mein tha….shayad main behoshi mein palat gayi thi….maybe I turned after they hit me….

Nishant's eyes narrowed as he subjected Kanan to a long, thoughtful gaze….she shifted again….averting her eyes. He knew she would never admit to the truth. He changed his tactics.
Josh ne tumhey iss kamrey mein kyun bulaya tha?

Kanan looked a little surprised….how did Nishant know about that?
Sir. Wo Kripa jee ke baarey mein mujhsey baat karna chahtey the?

What about Kripa? Nishant's eyes narrowed again.

Sir, unhey shaq tha Kripa jee chhup chhupkey Zaib se milti hai….usey wo Angad kehkar bulati hai….Josh Sir wanted to know if I had seen them together recently?

So? What did you tell him?

Mainey recently toh nahin dekha….pichhley do dinon mein Zaib Kripa se nahin mila, jabsey wo faraar hua hai, mainey unhey kabhie eksaath nahin dekha….lekin Sir….mujhey shaq hai wo yahin kahin hai…..issi Hotel ke aas paas kahin chhupa hua hai…..Kanan's voice dropped down to a confidential tone, as if sharing a secret.

How do you know that? Nishant snapped sharply.

Sir, mainey Josh aur Kripa ko discuss kartey huey suna…..wo zor zor se discuss kar rahey the bedroom mein………Josh Sir ne Kripa jee se poochha kya Angad yahan hai? Kya tumsey milney aaya tha? Tumhey leney aaya tha? Josh Sir ne kaha Angad hi Prateek ko uthakar le gaya hai…aur Kripa ke liye bhi zaroor wapas aayega.

Nishant's eyes widened, then narrowed….he wasn't sure if Kanan was telling the truth but it seemed she was: How are you so sure? Kya tumney pukka suna ke wo dono Angad ke baarey mein hi baatein kar rahey the?

Yes, Sir! I am positive! Josh Sir gussey mein the…bol rahey the….Angad ne merey betey ko utha liya….ab tumhey bhi leney aayega, I am sure….main usey nahin chhodunga….Kripa jee ro rahi thi….keh rahi thi wo Angad ke saath jaana chahti hai. Sir….mujhey lagta hai…Zaib yani ke Angad yahan zaroor aaya tha….Josh se uska jhagda hua..aur usney Josh Sir ko maar dala.

Josh ne tumsey aur kya poochha?

Sir, only that …and then he asked me to go look after Kripa. To keep a watch on her so Angad cannot whisk her away too!

I see! Nishant considered her version: And when you went up to the Suite, was Kripa still there?

Nahin…wo tab tak nikal chuki thi…..I was worried about her, Sir! So I went to look for her in the Lobby….lekin wo wahan nahin mili….aur phir mainey dekha Police aa rahi hai……aur phir pata chala ke Josh Sir ko…….(sniff sniff) kisiney goli maar dee"

Kanan got all tearful and wiped her eyes: Such a good man, a wonderful agent…….apni wife ke premee ke haathon maara gaya….So SAD! (sniff sniff)

Nishant offered his handkerchief to her with a sardonic expression….to his experienced eyes, they looked like crocodile tears….but he had no concrete proof pointing to Kanan's involvement in the kidnapping. And it appeared she was telling the truth about Josh's conversation with Kripa. There was every possibility that Prateek HAD in fact been kidnapped by Zaib, who was his real father, Angad. Perhaps Zaib had also returned for Kripa….he and Josh had an argument, possibly….Josh didn't want Kripa and Prateek to go with Zaib because of the dangers he was in…and Zaib had shot Josh in his rage. The MO was certainly Zaib's….a clean shot in the exact center of the forehead….execution style!

Nishant's jaws tightened….he wasn't going to leave Zaib….ab main tumhey nahin chhodunga….tumney Josh ko maar dala….I WILL bring you to justice or kill you with my own hands! Tabhi mujhey sukoon milega!

If only the Chinese Authorities had co-operated with them sooner, they would have searched Mr. Bajaj's Yacht by now. Zaib might be hiding there! DAMN IT! If they had nabbed him earlier, Josh wouldn't be dead now!

Nishant swore and got up with a look of determination.
"Neeraj, you lock up this room and come to HQ….Kanan, you can go to your room….tumhari duty ab khatam….wait for further orders."

Nishant went straight to Hongkong Police Headquarters and made a huge hue and cry about Josh's murder:
"If your Harbor Police had helped us search the Yacht before, my best Agent, My Friend, would not be dead today! He died because of YOUR indifference, YOUR delays!"

Inspector Han tried to placate him: Agent Saxena, please calm down…..I understand youre upset….you lost your Best man….we know what its like to lose our Officers. Please give us some time, we will get the necessary order for Coastguard Office.

No more time, get me that order right now….otherwise my Government will contact your Government about this!

The threat of political pressure worked at once….within an hour, .Nishant's team got the permit to search any offshore boat or yacht within a 2 mile radius.

Armed with weapons and searching gadgets, Nishant and a team of 3 CBI agents and 4 Hongkong Police Officers boarded a Coastguard Boat and was speeding towards Mr. Bajaj's Yacht within the next hour. The sun was dipping low in the horizon. .Dusk was approaching when they climbed up the rope-ladder to the deck of the Poseidon.

Mr. Mittal and John, Godfather's personal valet greeted them at the deck.
Mittal welcomed them abroad: Good Evening! I am Mittal, Mr. Bajaj's assistant. We got radioed from shore about your visit….please come to the lounge. My Boss awaits you there.

Godfather was sitting in his high-backed chair at the work-desk in a corner of the lavish lounge. He was smoking a cheroot, appearing casual and relaxed, working on his laptop seriously.

He didn't get up, just looked up and smiled sardonically at his visitors from Law Enforcement: Good Evening, Officers! To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?

Nishant went forward with the court order in his hand: Mr. Bajaj, I have this permit to search your boat for a suspected criminal! Please co-operate with us and show us all the accessible areas of this boat.

Godfather took the paper from his hand and slowly read it through, taking his own sweet time.

Hmmm….why would you think I would have a wanted criminal, a MURDERER no less, hiding on my boat?

We got information about this, Sir! We cannot divulge our sources but we have reason to believe that you are harboring a wanted criminal named Zaib, who works in your Hotel as a singer. He has murdered several people, including my agent.

I see…. Godfather looked thoughtful: I am not that well acquainted with all my employees around the world. But Yes, I have heard of a singer named Zaib who performs at my Hotels. Alright, you can search my boat….although I don't see why you would suspect a singer of being a criminal? I mean, why would an artist be a killer?

Nishant looked with narrowed eyes at Godfather: We found an assault weapon hidden in his room, Sir! So its not just guesswork that we are acting upon. The same rifle that was used to shoot a bookie named Shetty….I expect you remember Shetty, who also worked for you?

Really? Godfather looked most astonished: Zaib killed Shetty? Well, well, wonders will never cease……I suppose Shetty cheated Zaib in a bet…so he got mad. Shetty wasn't a very honest man.

Why? Did he also cheat you, Mr. Bajaj? Nishant asked with meaningful sarcasm.

Godfather's looked haughtily at Nishant: Nobody has ever dared to cheat me…..I never give them reason to….now if you Officers will excuse me, I have some work to catch up on.

JOHNY!…..Mr. Bajaj called his valet: Please show them around the Yacht….make sure all decorations and materials are put back in place after they have inspected them.
He nodded at the agents and cops, dismissing them!

The Chinese Officers were getting impatient with Nishant and Bajaj's dramatic exchange of words, veiled barbs and accusations. They heaved a sigh of relief and quickly started searching the large Yacht. They went over it with a fine tooth comb, from top to bottom…all 3 decks, kitchen (galley), all bedrooms, bathrooms, sauna, gym, everything that the luxury yacht had to offer.

They paid particular attention to the closets and cupboards, poking and prodding the walls for secret compartments like that in Zaib's Hotel room which had hidden his weapon. They looked everywhere possible for a human being to hide….under, over, inside, outside. Finally they gave up! There was no sign of Zaib. Apart from Mr. Bajaj, Mittal and John, there were only 3 sailors, one Boat-Captain and a cook on board. That was all! NO TRACES OF ZAIB WHATSOEVER!

Nishant wondered where Shabbir was…..Mr. Bajaj's Lawyer, who had supplied Nishant with all the secret information, who had been the snitch….. was missing from the boat! Probably he had been eliminated too….killed for leaking out information. Nishant thought with a sneer….these Underworld people never forgave an informer ! Shabbir must be dead and buried by now, somewhere in the Australian Desert! "SH*T! I should have taken Shabbir into protective custody while he still had the chance."

But Nishant was in for a pleasant shock…..when they went to talk to Bajaj after the search, he saw Shabbir there! He was sitting by the Boss's desk with a serious face, perusing some files and documents.

Nishant did a double take….Shabbir glanced back at him once….unreacting, blank, expressionless. There was no sign of recognition on his face.

Nishant was amazed! Either Shabbir had changed sides again or he was in terrible fear of his life…..he didn't even bat an eyelid at Nishant or show a single flicker of emotion.

Godfather looked at Nishant staring at Shabbir and smiled charmingly : This is my lawyer, Mr. Ahluwalia! I hope you are satisfied with your search that we are not harboring any criminals here. Now please excuse us, as its almost dinner time…. unless you all would like to join me for dinner, then you are all most welcome!
The other agents and cops looked a little hungry at the mention of dinner, but they couldn't accept the hospitality of an Underworld Don….escpecially when they were on duty!

Nishant smiled mockingly at Mr. B: Thank you, but not this time! I am sure we will meet again and then I might take up that offer for dinner.

His tone hid a subtle threat that this wasn't the last he was hearing from the CBI. He would be back again for more investigations! He will follow Mr. Bajaj and Zaib to the ends of the earth if he had to, to bring them to Justice!

Mr. Bajaj's eyes sparkled with challenge: Sure, Officer! I will look forward to that day!

The agents and officers descended to their own boat and speeded back to shore. Darkness had fallen over the land and the Sea. The towering skyscrapers of Hongkong lit up the skyline and reflected on the dark waters in shimmering waves.

Far away, on Stanley Island, from a room hidden above a waterfront store, Zaib had been watching the Law Officers board Godfather's Yacht with a pair of powerful binoculars. He grinned sardonically and lowered his binocs…..the Law Enforcement was so stupid! As if he would sit like a dumb pigeon on the Yacht, waiting for them to come and get him! He heaved a sigh of relief…..Prateek was safe and out of harm's way….Godfather had just informed him. Very soon, Kripa would be in safe hands too! Too bad about Josh, though! He didn't want him to die…..too bad he had to!

Nishant returned to CBI –HQ with a heavy heart! Zaib had given them the slip! Not that he had expected Zaib to sit there on the Yacht, waiting for them. But he had hoped to find some clues at least. Now every search was at a dead end.

He went to the meeting room and stared at the chair where Josh used to sit. At last, he broke down into tears: Sorry, merey dost! Main tujhko insaaf nahin dila saka….lekin main un logon ko chhodunga nahin….I wont give up, I wont rest till I catch that Zaib…who killed you so ruthlessly!

Suddenly, his phone rang. Nishant wiped off his tears, gulped down some water and answered the phone. It was from the Police Morgue.

Agent Saxena! Inspector Han sounded very excited…we have found something that will be of great interest to you! And it will solve the murder of your friend!

Nishant sat up with a jerk: WHAT? WHAT IS IT?

It's a mini-recorder…hidden in Agent Kapoor's inner pocket. He had switched it on when he went to that room….it has recorded every single conversation he had with his killers.

Nishant jumped out of his chair: WHAT? MY GOD! THAT IS AMAZING GOOD NEWS! THANKS OFFICER! I AM COMING DOWN AT ONCE! HOLD ON TO THAT PIECE OF EVIDENCE WITH YOUR LIFE! I AM COMING RIGHT NOW!

So GF's cronies whisked Prateek away? Shd. that come as a relief.. or not? Zaib knows abt Josh's death... so GF's men are responsible for it too? Now Kripa has a good reason to get reeeaaally mad with Zaib ... over and above the reasons he's already provided earlier 😡 😡
