Naina was dumbstruck as she realized the situation. But it was just a beginning of her problems. End wasn't even slightly visible. Rajveer and Huda started checking the serial number of each and every rifle against the list they got from Naina. Apart from the rusted ones all the rifles belonged to the base but an equal number of the listed rifles were missing. Naina's heart was sinking with every passing moment. Every moment the problems encircling her went on to be bigger and grave. She was running out of explanations. The situation was getting beyond her and her stand weakened. Someone has been sneaking the weapons out of the base probably to sell them and this time may be because of this sudden inspection had put back some useless rusted rifles. That was all Naina was able to make out from the current circumstances. But the first thing to bother her at the moment wasn't that shocking bit of fact but the blame of the entire incident that was about to come on her. A very big problem was knocking her door and she had already opened the door for it, though mistakenly.
"Any explanation you can provide for this." Huda asked.
She was at the loss of words. She was in a huge shock at the revelation of the de-facto state of things around her. It was all happening under her breath and she was clueless about the existence of anything but she knew no explanation could make the investigators buy that. She stood like a statue for a while. Her eyes were lowered and bursting with tears. She could see that the coming time had nothing but difficulties for her and her career and reputation was at stake. She gently shook her head in negative.
"Alright then Captain Singh. I think we need to discuss a few issues with you and your staff who have or can possibly have a direct bearing with this."
She closed her eyes in a desperate attempt to hold back her tears but achieved very little success. A drop of tear came down on her cheeks. She quickly wiped it off and regained her composure.
"Sure Captain Shekhawat."
Both of them proceeded towards Naina's cabin and she followed them with Lieutenant Sharma and Subedaar Khan.
All 5 of them stood there in the room gazing at each other. They were all trying to figure out the situation which was getting from bad to worse. Lack of appropriate explanations further worsened the things. After almost an hour of questioning, they all found themselves exactly where they have started from.
"So basically you all are trying to say that you are clueless about the scandal being operated here."
"In precise words... Yes!" Alekh answered on everyone's behalf.
"In that case I think we'll have to report the matter to the headquarters and undertake a detailed investigation of the matter." Rajveer enlightened them.
"Go ahead Captain. I don't think we are in a position where we can say anything. Besides, the truth has to come out." Naina answered.
"Great then. We'll send our report to headquarters right away. By the way when is Major Rastogi returning from his leave?"
Huda asked.
"In 2 days."
"Okay. But I think we will have to take over the charge from you till then.... At least of the Ammunitions Room. We'll need the keys with all the copies now." Rajveer instructed them.
"My set of keys is at my quarter. Is that okay if I hand them over later or I should get them now."
"Naina we'll appreciate if you could get it now." Huda insisted.
"Fine."
"Do you mind if I come along?"
"Certainly not Captain Huda."
They left to get the keys from Naina's place. Naina was looking gloomy and lost. She needed time to get over from the sudden ugly changes in the state of affairs. Besides the strict measures those were being instigated by Captain Rajveer and Captain Huda were humiliating for her.
"I know you are not liking the way things are going on." Huda tried to break the silence that dominated as they were on their way.
"Who would, Captain?"
"True. But you forgot something."
"What?"
"It's Huda."
"Happy times, those nice moments and short lived friendship... everything is dying down under the suspicions Captain Huda." She smiled mockingly.
He sighed.
"Firstly, you don't have to be so cynical. You are yet to be blamed responsible for the current circumstances...."
"Oh and I should wait for that immensely fortunate moment.... Right?" Mockery lined her words as they came out to hit piercingly at Huda. She didn't even let him complete.
"All I mean is that you should be patient. There is still a chance which says that those moments might not come... ever.... Besides..."
"Besides?"
"Besides I don't know what but something forces me to believe you that you are unaware of existence of any such scandal prevailing here. And I think in that case I'll stand by you, come what may."
They stopped walking. They were looking at each other but Naina suddenly lowered her eyes. She felt embarrassed for the way she had just now talked with him. She finally looked up. She looked calm now.
"Thanks Huda." She said softly looking at him forcing a faint smile on her face.
As they reached her quarter she directed him to her bedroom and took out the keys from the side table.
"Naina don't tell me this is where you keep these keys."
"Yes I do keep them here all the time." She answered innocently.
"I am yet to meet a more silly and irresponsible Army officer Captain Singh." He lost his temper.
"Huda what's wrong with you?"
"Naina you can't keep the keys like that. This drawer isn't even locked."
"So?"
"So... you are kidding me lady."
"Come on Huda no one can steal the keys from here."
"Just because you think so... I am sorry to say this Naina but you disappointed me. I thought you were more sensible than this. No one would ever give importance to your beliefs before making their way to this drawer. It's just a piece of cake and nothing more considering that the culprit is supposed to be one of your staff."
"Huda but...."
She sat on the bed with a thud. She realized that Huda made sense with whatever he said. Probably she had made a huge mistake unknowingly and there might be severe consequences awaiting her.
