Kripa saw someone grab her by the hand causing her turn around. She smiled as she saw Rahul standing in front of her.
K- Rahul, what are you doing here!
R- I was in the neighborhood and thought I would stop by to say hi
K- But you're office is on the other side of town
R- Well....erm.......I could still stop by right?
K- You're crazy Rahul, anyways, guess what
R- What?
K- My mom and dad called, they're coming to visit!
R- That's cool, when?
K- Tomorrow and my brother is coming too, I'm so excited!
R-And you're just now telling me about this family of yours
K- Hey, lets be fair now, you never asked
R- Fine, you win, but I'm going to the airport with you to pick them up
K- Alright, their flight lands at 2 tomorrow, so stay free
R- You don't worry about that, but you're parents won't freak seeing you with a guy right?
K- Actually......they might.....and my dad can be kind of scary.....
Rahul swallowed hard and fake smiled.
R- Then maybe I shouldn't go.......
Kripa laughed at seeing his scared facial expression.
K- Relax Rahul, I'm joking, my parents are cool, now I have to run, otherwise I'll be late, so bye!
Rahul watched Kripa run inside the New York Times building. There was something about her that he couldn't ever get enough of.
As Kripa sat down in her office, she couldn't help but think about her parents, the same parents that supported her every decision. The same parents who let her make her own decisions in life. She loved her parents, Anand and Meenal. And her younger brother Rishi was always trying to look out for her like an older brother. She smiled as she remembered the day she went home from work and was going to tell them she had to marry Angad Khanna.
FLASHBACK:
She opened the door and saw her brother with some friends watching tv and his mom in the kitchen and his dad eating at the table.
Meenal- Kripa honey! You're home, try these amazing pastries I made
K- erm....yea mom, let me change first
M- Alright, but be quick, they taste better when they're warm
Kripa went to her room and changed out of her dress up clothes to something more comfortable. By the time she went to the living room again, Rishi's friends were also gone and he was sitting at the table with dad eating pastries.
K- Mom, you better make some more because Rishi is eating like he hasn't seen food in twenty years
Rishi- Sorry sis, but I'm hungry, and like dad says "you can take anything from a man but not his food"
Kripa shook her head as her dad smiled.
Anand- Oh, I've taught you kids well, I'm so proud of myself
Meenal- Of coarse you are, I mean your the only one that raised them right, I mean I didn't do anything
Kripa- Mom, calm down, dad was joking, now come join us eat
Meenal brought some more pastries to the table and sat down herself.
Meenal- So Kripa, how was your day?
Rishi- Mom, you ask her that everyday and everyday the same answer is "good"
Kripa- Shut up Rishi, Anyways mom, today was a great day.
Anand and Meenal laughed.
Anand- What made it so great?
Kripa- Dad, you know that article I wrote about Angad Khanna
Rishi- oh man, he must hate you for that
K- Guess what! He challenged me he would change all his habits, and for a full year he won't do anything wrong again, can you believe it?
Anand- Don't trust bad boys like that
Meenal- Shut up Anand. Bad boys are the hot ones, right Kripa?
Kripa and Rishi weren't surprised their mom had said that, they were used to this.
K- Erm....yea mom, anyway, he wants me to marry him so I can make sure he lives up to his word, and after the year we'll divorce and if he's right then I'll give an apology in the magazine, end of story
Rishi- That's crazy
K- I know! Isn't it exciting? I think I should do it, what do guys think?
Anand- It's your life honey, I can't control it, but I will say whatever you do, think hard about it, I'm with you every step of the way, but.....I'll want to meet this Angad before you marry him
K- erm...alright dad, and what do you think mom?
Meenal- Well........is he handsome?
K- Mom!
M- Just kidding. I mean of coarse he's handsome, my daughter wouldn't marry someone ugly. I say go for it! It'll be a good experience that you'll back on one day and smile.
Rishi- Or maybe you'll look back one day and say "that was a pretty dumb thing I did." man!, sis, I don't think you should do it, I mean, what if something goes wrong
K- Awww, my little brother is over protective of me! I love you!
Kripa kissed his cheek and ran to her room with an anxious smile on her face.
Kripa picked up her cell phone and called Angad Khanna. She couldn't believe she was doing something this crazy, this sure would be some adventure. After a couple of rings Angad Khanna picked up the phone without knowing who it was.
"Hello" Angad said in a carefree and uninterested tone.
"It's me" Kripa said too excited that she forgot to state her name
"Erm...yea, I'm me too, but if you could be a little more specific, then that would be great" Angad said getting pissed off at the girl on the other line
"It's me, meaning Kripa Sharma!" Kripa said as if she were telling Santa Clause her name
"Yay, Kripa Sharma!" Angad said in a mocking tone. "Anyways, what is it?" Angad said trying to get her get to the point.
"Well, my parents said I can marry you but---"
"But what?" Angad said getting impatient
"If you let me finish Mr. Khanna I'll tell you, anyway, but my parents want to meet you, so if you could come to a quick lunch or drop by some time, then that would be great" Kripa said getting it all out in one breathe.
"Meet your parents, why would I do something like that? Ms. Sharma did you forget to tell them this is a temporary marriage and that it's not a love marriage" Angad said teasingly.
"If you don't want to come, you don't have to-------------" With that Kripa disconnected the phone. She got really pissed off at him and she didn't even know what ticked her off so much, but oh well, he deserved it. She wouldn't let him walk over her like he did with other girls.
The next evening, Angad Khanna was at her door. Kripa was in her pajamas eating a bowl of cereal, although it was six o clock in the evening. She with the rest of her family were watching tv.
Meenal- Rishi beta, get the door
Rishi- It's always me that has to get the door, not Kripa
Anand- It's because we love her more, not get the door
Rishi rolled her eyes as the rest of the family laughed.
Rishi- Yea?
Angad- Hello, I'm Angad Khanna
Rishi- oh.....so you're Angad Khanna......what are you doing here?
Angad- I came to meet Kripa's parents.....who're you?
Rishi- Rishi
Angad smirked- Boyfriend?
Rishi- try brother
Angad- Oh.....if it helps, that was going to be my next guess
Angad came in after Rishi.
Kripa- You here?
Angad- You invited me remember?
Kripa- Yea, but you said-----
Angad- Anyways, this must be you're little sister
Angad said as he handed a bouquet of flowers to Meenal.
Rishi- You're really bad at this game, she's our mother
Angad- Are you serious? She looks so young
Meenal- Ohh! How sweet!
Anand- But....who are you?
Kripa- Oh, dad this is Angad Khanna, remember I told you about him yesterday
Anand- Of coarse...have a seat Mr. Khanna
Angad- After you sir
Anand smiled at his manners and sat down.
Meenal- So Mr. Khanna----
Angad- Please, call me Angad
Meenal- Alright, Angad, will you have tea or coffee or a soft drink.....or anything ee
Angad- Well, since Kripa seems to be eating cereal at this time of day, I'll have some of those
Kripa looked embarrassed as Angad smirked at her.
Kripa- That bowl isn't mine.....it's ......my brother's
Rishi- Sis, what are you saying, that's your bowl
Kripa- you suck........anyways.......
Angad- I was just joking, but aunty, I'll take some water
Meenal- Alright, coming up
Meenal went to the kitchen, as Anand asked him questions to get to know him better.
Anand- Angad, I just want my daughter to be happy and have the capability of making her own decisions in life.....and this is her own decision to do this......I just don't want her to get hurt......
Angad- Uncle, I understand what must be going in your head....but Kripa will be fine at my house....she'll have the freedom of making her own choices and doing whatever she wishes, I promise she'll be safe and....and happy
Kripa was touched by the soothing words Angad said to her dad. She smiled and reminded herself to thank Angad when she got the chance.
Meenal brought a cold glass of water and handed it to angad.
A- Thanks
M- So Angad, do you have any family?
A- Erm.....well, my parents are dead and I don't have any siblings, but...you know, cousins and distant relatives
M- Oh...I'm sorry
A- No, it's all good.
The night passed with Angad flattering Meenal and winning Anand's respect. The next week they had a court marriage.
