Oh no …. Will he be there at the hospital for his son?

This move will be good for both. Jai is finally connecting with kids. Mendy's girls will be another set. The poor kid missed out on having friends his age.

Mrunal is getting a little sense of how calm and patient Atty is. And that he is not about to run away with her son.

Nothing to everything

She sat on the bottom step and held him close and rocked him

as he bawled his head off

“Sshhhh shhhhh… shakara… shhh shh”

The big blue eyes looked like some faraway ocean filled with sparkling tears

She carried him up the stairs

The neighbor’s wood door was open two boys hid behind curtains and peeked sadly

The younger one sucked his thumb as he stared in shock

Jaidrith immediately stopped crying and looked at them

Slid down Mrunalini’s form, and wiped his tears

His finger throbbed his upper lip was split and oozing blood

“Tula khelyace aahe ka?” (do u want to play?”) he asked

Mrunalini’s jaw dropped

The younger one smiled through his thumb inserted mouth

“Aaai?” Jai begged

“DOCTOR” Mrunal warned

He began to cry again

“I am soooo happy you have friends”

“They are my best friends” Jai was sure

Everyone was his best friend, those that hurt him emotionally and those that caused him physical pain

Mrunalini grabbed her purse and realized she was in home clothes

She quickly changed and grabbed her purse

Ran out

Jaidrith was leaning on the grill door of the neighbor’s staring longingly inside

A woman yelled and shut the door on his face

He began to cry again and joined Mrunalini

Lynn texted about the birthday as she sprinted towards the gate without realizing she doesn’t need an auto, she ran back up the stairs, Jai did not want to go

She was sure it was broken

It was purple and swollen now

When they unlocked and pulled the car out they had to wait to get out of the society

Too much traffic at 7 PM with families walking strolling to the nearby marketplace, teens and young boys laughing promenading teen girls

She had no idea where to take him

She paused at the gate to ask the guard

Unbeknownst to her Mendy was returning from cake pickup, to drop a bag of fabric off at Lynn’s favorite tailor in the same Abhay society.

Mrs Gomes had introduced her to Mrs Swarna Kale

He wondered if Mrunalini knew her

He allowed her right of way, and then drove in

“Usko invite kiya?”

“Who?” Lynn asked

“Ur new best friend”

“I DID she cant come mann”

“Why?”

“U ask her

“Wish u told me dude abhi dekha mei usko dude”

“Ja run karke”

He laughed

“Ur girl is out and about” he texted Atty

“Nice” Aatreya was putting things away in his apartment in Khar East

“Did u talk to her?”

“She was too busy watching her kid have a good time”

“YOUR kid”

“That too”

“Pa ko bola?”

Mendy sat in the car and texted

“I did he is not happy”

“Ouch”

Atty sipped his water and walked to the wrap around balcony

Something struck him, Mendy got off the car and walked over to the guard booth

And asked the guy

“Madam jo naya aaya hai kidhar ko jaayega wo?”

“Who aapka friend?”

“Hmm”

“Uska beta ka ungal toota bataya” “Kuch to toota” he sounded confused

Mendy was shocked

“Abhi gaadi mein uska son raha kya?”

“Jee saab” the guy nodded

“Kidhar ko bola? Wo Paswan Multispeciality bataya?”

The guard nodded

Mendy went on his phone and texted Atty

“Dude looks like the kid broke an arm or finger”

It took her 3 hours to get out, she had not taken Jai to Paswan

She was too afraid to take him to a run of the mill place, she took him to Inlaks General

She didn’t return his cals

He waited outside her building, when she returned after 10 with a sleeping Jai

She was shocked to see him as usual

“What happened she asked HIM

“What about him?” he pointed

“He broke his pinkie” she said worried

“Why is he asleep?”

“They had to calm him down for the brace”

“can I?” he reached

“Oh no” she said confidently and went up the stairs

She wouldn’t even give him the keys to unlock

When she put him on his new bunk bed lower level

“Does he have meds?”

“Hmm” she looked at him curiously, wondering if he was goingt o yell

She realized she had no authority over this child

“Don’t worry I have broken many bones” he said with a chuckle

She stared dumbfounded

No anger?

His Pa had blasted him, he was sad too, though he didn’t show it

“Do u want to talk tomorrow about the weekend? Since IT IS the weekend?” he asked arms folded staring at his son

Jai had opened his eyes briefly, too groggy to notice he fell back asleep

“About what?” she asked obtusely

“Sharing custody” he said calmly looking straight into her eyes

He was sure she was going to bolt

He saw it in her eyes

“Umm”

“I want to do the right thing” he whispered

He knew the front door was not shut all the way

“I am sure so do u”

“I don’t” she thought…

She was answerable to no one

She wondered who told him about the accident

“How do u know?” she asked waving at Jai

“Mendy was here, he asked the guard” he said honestly

“I cannot go to the birthday” she said nervously

“That’s fine” he shrugged

He wore a white vest and a stripe shirt and jeans she noticed

Always well dressed

“We have to figure this out”

“You are so eager is your family eager?” she asked as if she knew

“My mother is… my Dad is extremely disappointed” he said quietly

She looked at him frozen

“You told them?”

He nodded calmly

“Now they will want to see HIM” she realized in panic

She took a couple steps back and left the bedroom turning around

He followed her

She opened the door

“Do they live here?”

“No Bangalore” he said

She felt choked up

“You cannot take him to Bangalore”

“I am not thinking about that right now” he tucked his hands into his pockets

“Thank u for coming” she said softly

He nodded “I didn’t bring him any treats, I don’t know what he is allergic to”

“Umm”

“Can u send me his Doc reports? Does he I mean I am guessing he goes to an allergist?”

All this was new

She had never explained anything to anyone

Now he wanted to know everything….

Nisha, when will she realise that maybe Jai can have everything she couldn’t?

Shouldn’t she be happy for him?

I hope after initial shock is absorbed she gets to see Atty isn’t bad.

Lovely emotional roller coaster this going to be.
Eager to see Jai’s reaction.

Atty wants to get fully involved in his son's life. This is new for Mrunal.

Did Atty have a lot of allergies when he was a kid? If he did, he would be the best resource now for Jai.

To sink & to soar

Turned out, the lady across the hallway, Kirti Sahasre, was not home, the father was taking a nap in front of the TV, the boys, Ulhas and Utkarsh, were extremely naughty, and the last time they had wooed a kid Mrs Gomes was watching and the Dad had gone to the cops

Kirti’s husband, Mahesh had knocked on the door to let Mrunal know the next morning

Mrunal didn’t want to go to the cops, but would have liked an apology which did come

Kirti looked afraid when she opened the door to the maid the next morning

Mrunal smiled and greeted her anyway

She had her own worries

Kirti had no idea

Jaidrith’s first ever ever friendship had ended in a mishap

She wanted to ask Kirti if she will let the boys hangout

But was afraid to ask

In fact she didn’t know how to approach other parents

With the new Dad in the picture she didn’t know how Kirti might like or hate that

“Out of wedlock child” and “Grandpa living with the child’s mother’s best friend”

My life is a piece of work Mrunal thought to herself

She shut the bedroom door tightly, and placed a dupatta to fill the crack at the bottom and lit a scented candle

A girl from work had told her ghosts are afraid of fire and never approach it

Mother and son slept soundly

The new furniture and the lively neighborhood and the prospect of a new friend was all making her hopeful about Chembur

She loved housework, she spent Saturday morning setting her kitchen up, hanging bath towels

The last test had shown Jai could have oats in small quantities

She made oatmeal with strawberries and blue berries

They watched Up together for the 100th time

Mrunal hung pictures and set out her curios

She had no pictures except her own with her child

Last night when Aatreya had left she had watched him walk away wondering HOW it must be to have parents be disappointed

Her Baba had “urged” her to live her life to the fullest when she had told him she was pregnant

Right around then he must have started hooking up with Amruta she thought

Her mother just said “Like father like daughter, you both have your bodies in the toilet always”

She couldn’t care less at least her body language showed that

Her whole being was consumed by how she could get the next revenge from Sagar Ghatge

Mrunal was just a minor irritant who she had to deal with every now and then

Mrunal wondered how many times Jaidrith would be brought to Bangalore, how many cousins he will have

That made her cry

She was happy for him

But that meant he was no longer SOLELY hers

Oh! How did I let this happen

He is probably going to start liking this man

Now we cant even run away!

Lynn texted her and asked her if she wanted to come by for the cake cutting on the terrace, they had a magician

Mrunal was willing to throw the biggest most expensive parties

But the few times they actually invited the whole class only a couple kids had shown up with parents and said

“We cant stay long”

Mrunal knew the drill

She walked over to Jai’s room and sat by him

“If we are able to find your Dad will you want to meet him?”

Jaid couldn’t care less at this point, he was on his Switch

“Umm.. sure”

“Shakara… mee vinoda karata naahee” (I am not kidding)

He looked up from his game and stared at her

“Amee konla bhetat aahot?” (Who are we meeting again?)

“Tujhi Baba” she whispered holding her breath until her chest was about to explode

She realized this meant nothing to Jai

He continued to give her a blank look

There was no yardstick of this man in Jai’s mind

He craved for no man, he didn’t know a father

He never asked about one

He never wished for one

So this was not so seminal or dramatic to him

She had spent countless nights worrying when she had a cold or a flu “What will happen to Jai if I am gone?”

She conjured up scenarios of him not even being able to get help like those tragic movies

She had asked Sai to be there for Jai many many times

She knew fully well her mother would just abandon him

Her father? Would most likely be too busy making his own babies

There was not a soul who gave a rip about her

Mrunal threw away her washcloth and grabbed him on to her lap

These days His hair was almost upto his shoulder in luscious curls

She frequently ponytailed him, when he did homework

His school had strict rules but they were giving him a break because according to them he was “special needs”

That hurt Mrunal, he wasn’t… she thought

Just an opinionated shy awkward kid

“Amee tumhala hair cut ghyavale” ( We need to get u a hair cut)

“Noooo” he screamed rolling off her lap

They tickled each other she lay by him

Tumacē vaḍīla mumba'īta asatīla tara kāya? “What if your father is in Mumbai?”

Even that didn’t mean anything to him

He wasn’t even able to connect the dots to Aatreya beyond saying to him “Hey you look like me”

They lay in bed, she on her phone and him reading an anime book

He turned to her after an hour to ask

“Does he have a fast car?” Jai was definitely piqued

Her heart sank and soared all at the same time

She sat up sighing and texted Aatreya Rao for the very first time

“Do you have a car?”

“I do” he said almost immediately
