What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Hmm, this is something I've been thinking about recently and so I'm glad you asked this Q. I find myself using the word 'as' a lot in my writing. When I go over to edit my drafts, I find at least 2-3 sentences in a para where I'm describing a series of events and I find I try to cram in everything that's happening in one sentence. And 'as' is a very useful conjunction! 😆
If you were to publish one of your stories as a novel, which one would that be, and why?
This one: Love is all you need. Simply because I've never written anything like it. I have attempted the 'stream of consciousness' genre of writing before, but the amount of detailing that has gone in this one - it's mind-boggling (if I do say so myself) and I'm super-duper proud of it.
The length of each chapter is quite formidable (by my own standards) and it was (and still is because it's ongoing) a lot of blood, sweat and tears. I only had a vague idea of what the story was going to be when I began writing it at first, and it has grown and evolved so much since then. So I have managed to surprise myself I think with this one! (Though the person who edits it will develop a migraine for sure! 😆)
What do you like to do when you're not writing?
Music is my passion. But these days, I find I'm combining my passion for music and writing and writing about music! 😆 And reading (mostly historical fiction which is my current obsession)
And of course, recently it's been taking walks with my doggo, and getting him to behave (which is an almost impossible task!)
If you were to insert yourself in the universe of any novel, which one would that be?
Interesting question! I love reading historicals - stuff from the Victorian or Regency era, but the lack of indoor plumbing and the god-awful clothes they wear (corsets, and chemises, and petticoats 🤢) would put me off that life pretty soon! 😆
So maybe I'll pick the Wodehousian world of Jeeves and Wooster, or even better, Blandings Castle. I love the idyllic existence where life's biggest problems are getting out of unwanted engagements and trying to put the cook in a good mood so you can enjoy a fantastic meal. 🤣
Oh, and trying to win 'Fattest pig' competitions!
Which stories from the IF FF section would you recommend to your fellow IF readers?
Ah, again difficult choice. Tbh, I haven't done a lot of casual reading in the FF section. I have only read stories that I've had to beta-read or when I'm judging a contest. But I have come across some phenomenal authors here. So I would recommend anything written by them:
Shibani, Madhuri, Proteeti, Ramya, Moumita, Tiara.
I'm sure there are a lot more I'm missing out on, and I intend to remedy that as soon as I'm done with my fic (which is turning into an epic,😆if I don't curtail my verbosity soon!)
Do you have any suggestions for the writers on IF? If so, what are they?
Hmm, it would be very presumptuous of me to be giving suggestions. I don't think I'm that accomplished 😳.
But yes, I will say this - please check grammar, punctuation, syntax when you write. It can be very jarring to read when the correct conventions aren't observed (now you guys will say this is the OCD Beta reader in me speaking 😆)
Also, the flow of narrative is so so important. Try not to leave loose ends, and explain all the important plot points. I usually have the skeleton of a chapter worked out detailing what I will put in it before I begin my first draft and I find this helps a lot.
I also love reading stories where the characters and their motivations are well-etched out, as opposed to stories that just flow on events happening one after another. As a reader, I want to be able to root for the protagonist(s) and to do so, I want to know them inside out. So I, personally, enjoy stories like these, that allow me to know the character in depth. Even if you're not the greatest at character sketches, you can reveal a lot through the characters' interactions and reactions while they do or say something. So one piece of advice from me to writers would be: 'Don't sacrifice logic for sensationalism'.
How do you deal with writer's blocks?
I write. Even if it's garbage, I just let my pen (keyboard) flow. I go over it later and do a facepalm and chop it all off quite ruthlessly 😆(I have done this so many times), but surprisingly, I find I've also liked some stuff I've written when in the middle of the worst writers' blocks.
So, 'Write, even if you cannot' - is my motto.
Thanks for the questions, Leena! 🤗I enjoyed answering them! ❤️
And clearly, you now know what the answer to your first question should be given the length of my answers! 😆
