'Agra.' He replied, not wanting to be rude and messing up his chances, and at the same time feeling extremely furious at whoever invented the ranks of the army.

'Nice choice. And your unit Captain?'

'431 B.' he really didn't waste words, she mused, and it was going to be extremely difficult to promote someone who didn't speak more than two words, even if he was her ex-professor.

'Ahh.. are you the lead.'

'No. Major Bhargav.'

Her lip curled. After his villainous role in the school, he had proved to be a real asset and a friend, but she still felt a certain amount of dread every time they talked.

'Your friend, I assume.'

'Yes, we share an apartment now.'

'Ahh..nice. and how is the Taj Mahal?' her feeble attempt at a joke was wasted.

'Will you cease your incessant questions right now, Cadet Singh?' and he was back in professor mode.

'And I'm not your personal secretary, in case you've forgotten, Madam.'

'No,' she said nonchalantly. 'But I'm your superior.'

'Really?' he gave a mirthless laugh. ' I don't think you'd be here if I didn't teach you whatever I did back at KMA, Madam.'

'KMA? I didn't know you at KMA, Captain.'

'Silly girl, have you lost your mind?' he hissed ' I was your teacher at KMA.'

'No you weren't. My teacher, Rajveer sir, is dead.'

'I beg your pardon?'

'Yes, he is. He was nice, friendly, strong and compassionate. But then again, he didn't last long before he went behind a faade of a sneering and unworthy professor. Now if you will, can we stop this banter?'

'Yes, excuse me, Madam.' And he was back in sulky mode again.

'You know, I could easily give you a rural posting for that.' she said enjoying his look of horror.

'But you won't!'

'Well, you never know. You might get a phone call any day from my secretary posting you to one of the villages. It would be a nice change, no?' his look of horror changed into dismissal and defeat.

'As you say, Madam.'

'And how is your wife. You mentioned you share an apartment with Bhargav, but surely..'

'I'm divorced.'

'Oh. And ..' but she was cut off..

'How did that happen, Madam? Well, let's just say we weren't happy together. And I also doubt that not divulging my personal information will earn me a demotion, will it Madam?'

She looked up, surprised. He had a hint of a sneer on his face. Her ex-professor was back. And he had the upper hand this time. Determined not to lose the verbal encounter, she did the only thing she could.

'Your new posting is in the Bulandshahr, Captain. I expect you to be there at the first of next month.'

He sunk back in his seat, furious to be posted somewhere mediocre, and that too by his ex-cadet. The nerve of her!

'As you say, Madam.'

And at that moment, he didn't want to do anything more than slap her tightly across her face.
