Rajveer looked up at his friend's disbelieving face, and was about to say something when a crowd of people burst into his room. He could make out his former students, Alekh and Ali looking guilty, Colonel Nair, who had a smirk on his face, and Colonel Bhattacharya who seemed to shift his weight from one foot to the other. Last he saw Na- Major Singh looking confused, and three security officials. For a lack of a better word, he had no idea what they were doing here.
Before he had a chance to say something, one of the security officials came forward and announced, 'Captain Rajveer, hereby at this moment, you are being re-arrested for the murdering your own son, Rohit Singh Shekhawat with cyanide.
And he knew CRPP was open again. There was not much he could do. History was repeating itself. Just this time, the disbelieving gasp didn't come from Ritu, it came from Naina. He didn't even turn to look at her, but at the other people in the room. Everyone seemed to be avoiding his eyes, except the security officials who just looked impatient. At this moment, he knew that unless the case was solved, there was no hope for him anymore.
He moved forward, letting the Army do their arrest. Everyone seemed to be surprised to see him succumb to them, but then again, it was his son who had died, and he was after all, guilty until proven innocent.
He barely noticed as an official came forward to put a steel collar round his neck. It was just like the last time. He was a dog on a leash then, and he is a dog on a leash now. His right hand was yanked to put a handcuff on, which was now connected to his collar. The other part of the handcuff was attached to the security person, and he could feel as the other man tightened the strap, so that the razor sharp steel dug into his wrist. Every step he took slashed through his neck, as his handcuff was attached to the steel collar. He didn't expect any less, after all he was in the Army. Lastly, one of the men bent down to attach a pair of leg irons on his legs, which would prevent him from escaping. He bowed down, and could feel five pairs of eyes boring into him.
He slowly turned back, and he could see Naina staring at him. He looked at his 'captors' for a moment, and was granted a moment to talk to her alone. Her eyes were almost brimming with tears as she saw him so humiliatingly arrested. He tried to move forward to her, but felt the jerk on his neck and decided not to.
'This is it.' she whispered.
'This is it.' he repeated. 'We are enemies now, Madam.'
She looked up confused, 'What?'
'We are on different sides Madam, you shouldn't associate with me anymore. I am, in the eyes of the law, a murderer. We must be on different sides now, Madam.'
'But, I know you didn't murder your son.' She stuttered.
'I know I didn't.' he repeated.
'Then—'
'Madam, you will be arrested as well, if you don't get away from me. I'm sorry. This is the way it is.'
'But why are they .. they humiliating you?'
He smiled wryly, 'To the world, I murdered my son. There is no respect for people like that.'
'But I will support you, Captain. You don't have to go.'
'Get away from me, Madam.' He hissed, 'Don't put yourself in danger for someone who doesn't deserve it. Forget me and go on with your life. Maybe.. Maybe someday, we will be able to talk again in the open.'
She smiled through her incessant tears, 'Don't bet, Captain. It doesn't suit you.'
He shook his head, 'Don't cry, Madam. It doesn't suit you.'
She got up and suddenly narrowed her eyes, 'You are one of the worst people I've had the misfortune to love.'
He closed his eyes, letting her words wash over him. They didn't, instead her words stung. But he knew those were true. He leaned very close to her, and bought his finger so close to her face that she almost couldn't see it. He traced her face, not touching her, and whispered, 'And you're one of my best friends I've had the misfortune to lose.'
And then he was yanked away. He didn't glance back.
Preview for Part 19
'How is it that you get to take way everyone I love? It's not fair but you deserve it.'
'But I don't---'
'You do. You deserved Ritu then, and you deserve Naina now.'
'But I'm not perfect.'
'Maybe that's why you deserve them.'
