'Maia! How are you these days?'
She stopped and scowled at her so called best friend. Putting on a fake cheerful smile, she turned back, 'What an un-pleasant surprise.'
She sneered back, 'Likewise, dear. So tell me how is your husband doing?'
'You're sick, you know that? You're sick.'
'Thanks dear. But if you want to be sick, I could tell you some of the things your husband and I do.'
'Shut up! Don't you ever think of your husband? He loves you! And look at you, you're betraying him everyday. Poor guy has no idea about what you're doing to him.'
'Oh him, he is easy to convince. You just bat your eyelashes at him, and he falls in love.'
'You're heartless, you know that. He looks up to you as a Goddess, and you betray him?
'But that's where you're wrong, Dearie. I am not a goddess, merely human.'
Maia was left silent.

The cell was the worst he had seen in a long time. Yes, he had been to prisons before, for visits or arrests, but this was by far the worst cell. He felt cramped, there was no much scope for movement anywhere. By the tickling on his back, he could say that a cockroach was running down his back. He shivered disgustedly, and closed his eyes.
He was walking down a valley, a lush green valley, but instead of feeling content he was sad. His face was tearstained, and his eyes were red and swollen from crying like a girl. Hearing footsteps behind him, he turned back to see Navin smiling at him. his lips curved upward in a small smile.
'Hi Navin!.'
'Raj! My friend, how are you doing?'
'Not good, yaar.'
'I can see that. What's bothering you idiot?'
'Your sister.'
Navin smiled down at his not so tall friend, and his eyes had a knowing twinkle to it. 'Aha, I knew it. spare me the details, though, okay? I don't want to hear about my sister's sex life.'
Raj smiled vaguely again, 'God no. It's just that she loves me, that's what she says--'
'And you?'
'That's the problem. I don't love her, Navin, believe me, I don't. I am in love with Ritu, yaar, how can I love your sister?'
'How is it that you get to take way everyone I love? It's not fair but you deserve it.'
'But I don't---'
'You do. You deserved Ritu then, and you deserve Naina now.'
'But I'm not perfect.'
'Maybe that's why you deserve them.'
'What do you mean?'
'Perfect people a\only occur in fairy tales, Raj. Make the most of your opportunity. If you let it go, it might never come back again.'
He nodded his head, still thoughtful, when Navin called him again, 'Oh Raj!'
'Yeah?'
'You are one of the worst people I've had the misfortune to love.' he mimicked, and then he was gone.
He jolted awake again, only to find himself cramped in the cell, and then he realized that everything just now was a dream. But then again, he asked himself the question, was it?

She was sitting on her couch, flipping through the channels not really actually watching the show in front of her. Her conscience was bothering her, bothering her a lot. She didn't know what to make of it. and all her thoughts came back and eventually settled on him.
Her mind went back to the first time she had met him. she had never known that just a few minutes with that stranger would make such a lasting effect on her. As she looked out of the window, she could see the rush of people, hurrying to get back to their homes and families. She smiled wryly, she wished she could do that too. She liked everything about him, especially the way her name rolled off his tongue.
'I'm so sorry.' She gushed out, wanting to apologize more, but stopped at the sight of the young man. He was her age, she thought, and definitely not bad looking.
'Not to worry.' He flashed her a cheesy grin, and she smiled as well and started to turn back.
'I- I-m sorry. It's just that well, I'm err.. in the army.'
'Nice to meet you Maia. I'm Captain Sharma. Captain Alekh Sharma.
His voice had some kind of impact on her, it had some kind of seductive feel to it that she liked. She was supposed to attend the Officer's Ball with him this weekend, but she couldn't hold it off any longer. Her conscience was eating her inside, and this was something that she absolutely had to do.
With a shaking hand, she picked up the phone and dialed his number. For a second, she closed her eyes when she heard his voice saying "Hello," but her resolve won over. Taking a deep breath, she spoke into the handset, 'Alekh, I'm married.'
Somewhere in the background she could hear something falling to the ground and crashing before she hung up.
Preview For Part 20
'They said it was urgent, we had to bring this to you right now.'
Tentatively he opened the package and promptly dropped the single piece of paper which it held.
It was a death certificate.
