Thanks Anita for the update. But how will say Bhupinder Singh producer of RKC earn money? Can u clarify that point. If we r jus paying $10 for HS, pm, how would it be feasible for Star to pay the producers who in turn people working for them?

Anita, u said Netflix produces what we want. How would they know what we want? Each has diff. tastes.

Hi Vidya, finally got your name. 😊. I can tell you guys how it works for us.

I have amazon prime in the US. I pay a fee for it yearly. The benefits of Amazon prime include two day shipping, free books, streaming music and some movies and original content. Netflix is a monthly charge. It lets me watch content on 4 devices at once. I share this account with my sibling. I use it on the smartphone, tablet, smarttv and laptop. Basically all my devices. Similar to amazon.

My parents have a family subscription for Indian language channels and movies which my sibling and I use to certain channels which they watch on a smart TV through an app. Available again on on-demand. We watch on phones, tablets and laptops. We consume differently than our parents, rarely on TV and mostly on the go.

My parents also have basic cable which has DVR and on demand that lets them watch American TV. We also subscribe to HBO go which is again on demand viewing through an app or smart TV.

We subscribe to multiple services as we want and they produce content. Netflix for instance is spending $150 million on the original series The Crown. They and Amazon are producing Oscar and Emmy winning movie and TV content. All this is funded through subscription. The viewer gets an on demand super product available on their time line cheaper than cable TV and these companies revolutionize TV and movies. HTH.

Hotstar is $9.99 in the US. So star plus is moving that way too I think.

Netflix has movies, documentaries, TV series like NCIS produced by other channels and international movies. In addition they do original programming in multiple genres. This is what they have commissioned on their own.

As you can see you have multiple genre choices from action to animation to anime to historical to Marvel. Many are award winning too.

In addition when they premier a series all episodes are available for that season at once. The Crown for instance I saw in a weekend. It had 10 episodes of 1 hr each for one season. You can binge watch it. That is the biggest difference to me. On your schedule. I pay less than $15 for this monthly and share it with my sibling. We have two accounts in the same subscription so the recommendations are according to our taste.

Didn't some people in rural India directly go to cell phone without ever having a land line. I have a feeling once the rural youth learn more about smartphones they are going to consume differently than their parents. Urban youth already do. Many middle aged folks also use computers. People are not going to be tied to a specific time I think. Doesn't cable TV in India have DVR ? If so that alone gives people the option to watch later be it rural or urban.

Thanks Anita. So this is how it works. Netflix or Amazon pays the producers directly if it is happy with storyline approached first by the producer, who in turn can reimburse his/her cast/crew. Also they may pay the channels directly for the content. Am I right in understanding?
In that case how is it feasible for Netflix? I mean they have to pay an enormous sum to producers/channels and if they charge quite nominally, how would it work out in the long run. I know for instance, Amazon still runs in losses, but their g/will and share markets r high because of hits on their websites. But we don't know when that might burst. I am asking purely from the profit aspect.

if you all remember a show named badtameez dil started on star plus ran for around 4 months because star plus then dint want it. shifted to hotstar for amother 2-3 months and completed the rest of the story there. i dont know how the producer earned profit, but that is what happened.
I am saying they could have done the same with RKC instead of rushing and not completing it properly

@Janas I dont know exactly. But it can be based on consumption. I mean for a movie till it is released you can say profit or loss. It is decided by the viewers who watch the film. The film gets to run more if it has more viewers.
Similarly for amzon or netflix the PH might get paid based on the amount of watchers for that particular series. Based on consumption they will decide whether another season is needed or not. What is the plus is that every season will be complete in its way or the story of that season will be completely told. So as a viewer you wont be disappointed.

See in television here the problem is, the viewer invests his or her time and the length of the show is determined by TRP, so on many occasions the viewer is left high and dry as they dont get a complete feeling.

@naq I remember badthameez dil I had watched it. But even in hotstar it was a hurried end, not a proper end.

Thanks Naq and Shruthi. I guess, then they could have done that.
But 1 thing and I am sure all of will agree. I am quoting the Gita - do ur duty with utmost devotion and sincerity; leave the results to ur karma (or God). I feel BS and Rolling Stones did that. Whether SP relents and gives an extn or the show stops two weeks later, the outcome of that can well be seen from these forum as also their twitter. And I believe one more whatever happens happens for good. So if BS & Co. r good, their future will be good.
