😳BAS... CHANDAN
Most marriages in places other than Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai are arranged by families. Newspaper matrimonials are still very common in today's India. Gupta and Vaidya trying to arrange their kids' marriage is no novelty.
After much thought, debating and a few more days of watching Teeku waste away, Gupta convinced his sons that he should talk about it with Teeku
He arrived in Delhi that weekend
"Hum theek hain, is bahane aap Dilli to aaye she teased, hugging him on the sofa
"Kuch karte hain, kahin ghoom aayen?
"Chandu ko bhi le jaayen? she asked lifting her head and looking directly into his eyes
"umm... ab chandu kaise beta? he was depressed
"See even you miss him she cried her heart out
"Ek baat kahen aapko? Bina larey sunengi? he asked holding his breath
Himani was pouring out tea in the Malviya Nagar kitchen
She paused holding the tiny saucepan
Clamping her hand over her mouth
She heard a auto, and a cycle roll by on the street below
A loud honking of a bus or a truck followed
She couldn't hear Teeku anymore
She panicked, her daughter upon hearing her father's proposal had jumped off the 2nd floor balcony?
She rushed out to the living room
"Maa... Dad ka koi naya idea hai Teeku sat up
Her hair a mess, her youthful innocent face missing its usual glow
She was dressed in blue Minnie mouse lounge pants and a skinny orange tee
"Umm... Shyam Gupta suddenly didn't have the courage anymore
Himani tried to sneak back into the kitchen
"Himani sunen to Shyam hollered
"Hari Ommm she muttered under her breath and turned around
"Chai laatein hain
"Achha le aayen he urged
She sat uncomfortably across from him
"Kya hai idea? Aapke gunde Chandu ko waha se utha laayenge? she said earnestly
He looked shocked at how his daughter was able to think violent thoughts now
"Gunde nahi dad mera Matlab... u know... people from the factory can rough them up? she had actually given it some thought!!??
"Umm.. nahi teeku... hum sochey ek idea hai jis se aap ... matlab... hamey... aise kisi baat ki koi zaroorat nahi
"KAISE? her eyes sparkled
"Aapki shaadi kar dete hain waha? he chuckled nervously
"Bareilly? she asked not at all recoiling from the idea
"Umm... haan he nodded looking at his wife for support
She was frozen with the cup at her lip
"Kaun hai? she asked eagerly
"Unke ghar se rishta aaya hai
"PHIR TO MAIN ROZ CHANDU KO DEKH SAKTI HOON she shrieked and jumped up
Not for a nano second thinking about who she has to marry, how she will live ina small town, and how she will deal with the demands of being married into a large non urban family Not to mention the emotional, familial, physical/conjugal needs of marrying a man would place upon her. She didn't care what the guy did for a living, and what his education was, what he looked like and what he liked to eat and do in his spare time
Didn't care if she even liked him or not.
CHANDAN... Was all she cared about
"Aap seriously keh rahe hain, or are you yanking my chain? she got up, hands on her hips challenged her Dad
Himani had splashed her chai all over her saree, she set her cup down with trembling hands in disbelief at her daughter's totally unexpected reaction
"Mazaak nahi teeku... is maamle mein Dad aapse mazaak karenge?
"I will DO IT she nodded, her eyes glazed... her expression one of sheer elation. "I am ready she mumbled and undid her scuncie and tied her pony tail neatly for the first time in days, clapping her hand noiselessly
"Sujhaav aapka tha? Harit asked his mother angrily (the Roorkee Gupta daughter Avantika's proposal)
"Nahi beta Lakshmi squirmed
"Hum kahe Gupta ji ko Sita Ram Vaidya spoke calmly
"Kyon Bareilly mein ladkiyan khatam ho gayin hain? he asked scornfully
"Umm.. nahi.. aisi baat nahi
"Phir? Unki taraf se aaya rishta? his eyes took on a calculating gleam
"Arey nahi. Hum call karey rahey
"Beta roti aur dein?
"nahi Ma he smiled
"Aap sochen, 4 hafte honey ko hai, munne ne dhang se ek shabd nahi bola
"Alka Bhabhi aaj Mission hospital mein therapist se baat karne waali hain he said confidently
"Ma ne mana jo kar diya Vaidya said smugly
"Maaa. Bhabhi ne kaha aapko jhijhak hai... But therapy is fairly common
"She is from 1950s India, you have to be considerate Vaidya spoke patiently
"But we are talking about a child in 2018
"Haan... theek hai Vaidya dragged
"isme koi sharam nahi
"Chalo yeh behes hoti rahegi Vaidya squirmed hoping Laksmi will rescue him
"Do saal ka time liya aapne UK se lautkar, pro-bono hi kar rahen aap, kab law firm start karenge? Yak ab government ki naukri karenge? Lakshmi spoke up
"Uska hamari shaadi se kya naata?
"do saal poorey ho gaye Vaidya cut out everything his wife said
"Ghar mein roz har waqt 4 sabzi, kheer ban rahi hai, munne ne doodh ke alawa kuch piya nahi Laksmi broke down
"Yeh unki zid hai, therapy se theek ho jaayenge
"Nahi betaaa
"Who apni maasi ko dekh lenge to khaana shuru kar denge? he scoffed
"Koshish to kee ja sakti hai?
"Shaadi karke? he was astounded
"Sundar hain, padhi likhin hain, Symbiosis se MBA kar chuki hain. Modern hain Vaidya listed
"Ziddi hain aur apni alag law book follow karti hain. Koi respect nahi hai unko court ya legal system ka he was merciless
"Umm... Harit beta Lakshmi tried to tone him down
"Humse yeh ummeed na karen ki hum... umm...unko bhaiya jaise pesh aate hain Bhabhi se aise... hum nahi karenge "Chandan... bus... ummm" Harit said shaking his head wearily getting up offering his reluctant consent as he left his roti on the plate uneaten.
