Part 22
Next morning Naina slept in late and only got up at noon.
She got up to find a note from Rajveer
"Mom and daughter deserve some rest after yesterday's amazing efforts. I have turned off your alarms. Enjoy some rest and sleep. Love you!"
Naina(to herself): You always have your way don't you. I better get to work! I know you don't enjoy the attention. But you'll have the best birthday party ever.
Naina got to work with her team of cadets and faculty members. By the time they were done at 6 pm in the evening the mess looked completely transformed.
At 6.30 pm Raj walked in to a dark mess. When he turned on the lights he was surprised to see half of KMA in the mess. Everyone came and wished him and told them how much he meant to them. He smiled and thanked everyone but unlike last night, this surprise was causing him more pain than joy. He didn't want this horrible day to be celebrated in such a grand way,
Finally he saw Naina standing in the background. She looked nervous and excited and also incredibly beautiful.
Naina: I am sorry I went against your wishes. But I wanted this day to be very special for you. Please don't get angry.
Raj: Of course not! I can never be angry with you. And I love this!
Naina could see through Raj. She knew he was lying! He wasn't happy. She also wondered where he had been all day. He wasn't in his uniform nor in his formal clothes. He was wearign a white kurta pyjama and looked haggard when he walked in.
Raj tried to be a sport. But Naina sensed that he wasn't enjoying the party. If anything all the birthday wishes and words of praise were making him uncomfortable. She made sure that the party winded down soon.
Naina: Raj why don't you go to the room. I'll get this cleared and join you.
Raj: Don't be crazy. You go and rest. I'll get everything cleared up.
Half an hour later Raj got back to the room to find Naina sitting on the sofa with her feet on the table. She had gone off to sleep. He didn't want her sleeping in such an uncomfortable position and gently woke her up.
Raj: See! This is why I didn't want the party. You have over-exerted yourself.
Naina: Raj i know that's not the real reason. What happened? I wanted to have this party to make you realize just how much everyone loves and celebrates you. But you didn't like it, did you?
Raj: Naina it's not like that. I loved everypn'es efforts. I just feel that I didn't deserve it. Naina I don't think there's anything to celebrate about my birthday.
Naina: How can you say that?
Raj: Naina because my birth corresponds with my mother's death. I had gone to perform my mother's barsi pooja in the morning. I should have told you all this a long time ago. But here goes...
By the end of his story, Raj was crying and Naina had hugged him and was soothing him.
Naina: Why didn't you tell me all this earlier?
Raj: I wanted to! But I was scared... You don't hate me, do you now that you know I am an illegitimate child. You don't think i'll be a bad father like my own biological father?
Naina: are you crazy Raj? And stop calling yourself names like illegitimate and b**stard. You are the best thing that happened to me and so many other people.
Raj: Naina I always struggle with these questions. Did my mother even want me? Maybe she wanted to abort me...
Naina: Raj stop it. You just told me your mother Priyaji was one of the most successful lawyers of her generation. Why would she do anything under force? Raj, you know right there is a way to get closure on some of these issues? You could always go and speak to your Nana and Nani. They are among the most well known families in Rajasthan and...
Raj: No!!! I have already caused them enough pain. And anyways they decided to give me up when I was just 3 weeks old. They don't want me in my life. I am unwanted...
Naina: SHH!!! NOW HEAR ME MR. RAJVEER SINGH SHEKHAWAT. NEITHER ARE YOU UNWANTED NOR ARE YOU RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MOTHER'S DEATH. YOU HAVE HAD SUCH A POSITIVE IMPACT ON SO MANY LIVES. AS A FRIEND, A SOLDIER, A MENTOR BUT MOST OF ALL AS A HUSBAND AND FATHER.
Raj clung to Naina and cried his heart out while Naina held him tightly and kept reassuring him just how special he was.
JAISALMER
A gracious, old lady was standing in front of the smiling portraits of a young woman.
Old Lady: Priya... we miss you every day. And your father I think his laughter, his happiness, his joy died with you. I don't think he's smiled once in the last 30 years.
The woman turned to a photograph of Priya with her newborn son, taken hours before she died
I know you'll never forgive us for what we did to your son. Abandoned your darling in an orphanage when he wasn't even a month old. But Priya I had no choice... No choice at all. But I have prayed for him every day, every moment of my life. And today on his 30th birthday I hope he has everyhting he wants in life. And Priya, my jaan, I hope you'll understand us some day even if you can't forgive us.
I don't know how many years I have left to live. If anything I look forward to being reunited with you in the after life. But my one wish it to see my grandson, your precious son, before I die. To see him happy and healthy. And to beg him for forgiveness.
