Part 4
Lavanya lay in her bed, her blanket pulled over her head. The entire day's effort had been a waste, all because of that ignorant man's fault. He didn't even have the decency to ask Lavanya why she had poured the milkshake over his friend's head. She had lost her job because of a fool. Now she had to start all over again tomorrow! Maybe she should have swallowed her pride and just served the food, like she was supposed to. But Lavanya knew she was not one to take anything quietly. Lavanya now let out little chuckles under her blanket thinking about the expression on Prithivi's face as she had poured the milkshake over his head. "It was all worth it." Lavanya whispered to herself. Her eyes slowly starting to shut, as the day's hard work started to overcome her in the form of sleep.
A loud knock caused Lavanya to jump out of bed. She did not know where the knock came from and lazily proceeded to open the door to her room. However, no one was there. She crept back into her bed, brushing the incidence off as her imagination. She had just begun to fall asleep again, when another knock interrupted her sleep. She now sat up on bed, and turned on the table lamp that lay on the table beside her bed. As her eyes adjusted to the light, she saw a figure of a man on the other side of the glass doors. She rubbed her eyes, to make sure she was seeing things correctly. It took her a few minutes to realize it was Shaurya, who was standing on the other side. A little puzzled she slowly got out of bed. This was strange time to be knocking on someone's door. But then he was strange altogether, what else could she expect of him. Lavanya unlatched and opened the sliding doors.
Shaurya had been quiet puzzled as to why Lavanya had poured the milkshake over his friend's head. However he had a good idea, how it could have happened. He had known Prithvi for quiet some time now and knew what a big flirt he was. He probably deserved what Lavanya did. What Shaurya just could not bear was a girl he knew very little about, and whatever little he knew made her seem like a very obstinate and incorrigible person, had managed to invade his thoughts once again. He just couldn't get her out of his mind. He had been trying to sleep for a good hour and half now, but it was no use. Each time he would shut his eyes, "she" would appear, giving him a mysterious smile. Shaurya turned from one side to the other, hoping something would help him get "her" out of his thoughts, but all his efforts were in vain. Ultimately, he arose from his bed, walked across the garden, in his pyjamas, bare-footed, and forcefully knocked on Lavanya's door. His first attempt was unsuccessful, as Lavanya had opened the wrong door, but the second time Lavanya answered his knock.
"Yah?" Lavanya asked agitated.
Shaurya was unsure as to why he had decided to come here. He had knocked on the door without thinking why he was doing so. "Were you sleeping?" He finally asked after a brief moment of silence.
"No I was dancing. Cause' that is what I do in the middle of the night, dance!" Lavanya retorted sarcastically.
"Forget it!" Saying this Shaurya turned around and started to walk back to his room. It was impossible trying to talk to this girl! "Just impossible" Shaurya whispered to himself.
"Wait!" Lavanya called out. "You can come in." Lavanya left the sliding door open and went to turn on the main lights in her room. Shaurya turned back around, feeling proud at his mini victory.
Shaurya stood in Lavanya's room, looking around. If her room was indication to her personality she was a very boring, neat, and clean person. But Shaurya doubted that was true, because however she was, she definitely didn't seem boring. Lavanya sat on her bed waiting for Shaurya to say something. She watched him curiously, wondering what was on his mind.
"Nice room." Shaurya said casually.
"Thanks? He is acting as though he had never seen this room before! This is his house! Crazy!"
Shaurya now turned to Lavanya, with a slight smile on his face. "I don't think we were introduced officially." Shaurya extending his right arm towards Lavanya, and continued, "Shaurya, but call me Shaw."
Sceptically Lavanya shook Shaurya's hand, a bit amused that he had found this hour of the night to come and introduce himself. He was stranger than she thought. "Why Shaw? I think Shaurya is nice name."
"Shaurya is too old fashioned and boring, Shaw is cool and hip."
The manner in which Shaurya spoke, made Lavanya smile, she was a lot more than amused now. "Okay Shaw, I will call you Shaw! By the way when I shaw you standing at my door I was a bit scared, you were here to fight. But now I shaure you are not here to fight." Lavanya gave a Shaurya a fake friendly smile. They both knew, Lavanya was mocking his "cool" name, and doing a pretty good job of it.
"Do you purposely like to annoy people or does it come naturally?" Shaurya asked
"Oh it is a talent not everyone has." Lavanya retorted in her usual casual manner.
Shaurya could not help but smile at this. No matter how sarcastic Lavanya was, there was just something about her that drew Shaurya towards her. He was not sure what it was, but he was not ready to leave yet, he wanted to talk to her more, get to know her better.
"You didn't tell me your name?" Shaurya pointed out.
"Lavanya."
"Lav-van-ya! Pretty long! Don't you think?"
"I don't think so."
"How about I call you Lav. Now that is cool!"
"No!" Lavanya snapped. "I hate that word, and I hate that name. Just Lavanya!"
An awkward silence engulfed the room and Lavanya realized that she had snapped at Shaurya without reason. He was just making conversation; he did not know why Lavanya hated that name or that word. Lavanya turned to Shaurya, and smiled a guilty smile.
"Okay you call me Lavanya and I will call you Shaurya. Opps, shawry I meant I will call you Shaw!" Lavanya joked to lighten the mood again.
Shaurya narrowed his eyes at Lavanya pretending to show annoyance at Lavanya. But his lips gave away his secret when they broke out in a smile. "Why did you pour the milkshake on Prithiv's head?"
"I told you. He deserved it."
"Do you want you job back? I can get it back for you."
"No, I can find another one."
"Why are you working? Aren't you suppose to be attending college?"
"Don't you think you are asking too many questions?"
"I thought we were friends? And friend are suppose to know about each other right."
"Friends?" Lavanya's tone suddenly changed. She lowered her eyes and tried to remember the last time she had had a friend, someone she could share her feelings with. Someone who could wipe her tears when she was sad, someone who could laugh with her when she was happy. Someone who would just be there for her. Could Shaurya… Lavanya looked up and Shaurya, and spoke again, "Shaurya it is really late, and I am really tired. Do you think we can continue this later?"
"As you wish." Shaurya smiled at Lavanya and left. Leaving Lavanya with his questions still to be answered.
