Part 2

Shaurya got out of his car extremely irritated at the stranger who stood blocking the entrance to his house. He walked right up to her and snapping his fingers asked her to get out of the way. Lavanya had recognized him the moment he had stepped out of his car. She was equally annoyed at Shaurya. How dare he ask her to leave, arrogance dripped from each word he spoke.

"Wow, I didn't expect you to ask someone to move out of your way. I mean it doesn't seem like you have a problem with knocking people over if they are in your way!" Lavanya said with a sarcastic smile on her face.

Shaurya was a bit puzzled by the girl's comments. "What?" Shaurya asked, but didn't wait for a reply and continued, brushing off her statement as some random ranting by a crazy girl who stood in his driveway! "Anyways, move out or I will have you thrown out." Shaurya smiled, feeling proud of his announcement. He felt powerful.

"I don't think so!" Lavanya retorted. Leaving a surprised Shaurya behind she started walking towards the house. She rang the bell twice before realizing the door was a bit open. She pushed the door open, to find it all dark inside the house. She was confused, but before she could understand what was going on, the word "SURPRISE" echoed in her ears. As the lights came on Lavanya smiled knowing well that a well planned out surprise had just been wasted on her. Shaurya who had now caught up to Lavanya, entered the house, shocked to see all his family and friends gathered in front of him, with disappointment written all over their faces!

There was a moment of silence before Shaurya spoke, "what's with the sad faces guys, I am back now!" Suddenly the party came back to life as everyone started hustling and bustling around Shaurya and Lavayna got pushed to the side. A sad smile broke onto her face. Why would she expect people to treat her any different when life itself had thrown her to the sides. She placed her bags by her side and took a seat in a chair placed in the corner. She would just wait till someone finally noticed her and showed her to her room.

"Lavanya?" A soft voice asked.

Lavanya raised her head to find, a sweet looking lady smiling down at her. With the light shinning behind her and the beads on her sari glittering under the light, she almost seemed like an angelic figure. Lavanya couldn't help but smile at her as she got off her chair.

"Mrs. Kapoor?" Lavanya assumed she must be "Kapoor aunty" the one her mother had told her about. After all Mr. and Mrs. Kapoor were the only ones who knew she was coming here to stay.

"Oh I am so sorry beta, it took me so long to come and see you. Actually my son just returned from America as well today and I just got busy in the party! If I had known you both would reach here at the same time, I would have surely arranged for you both to come here together. You must have had to take the taxi here! I am so sorry for that"

"Don't worry about it Mrs. Kapoor. I had no troubles in the taxi." Lavanya thanked her stars that she did not have to share the same car with that arrogant, ignorant, and insolent beast.

"Call me aunty beta."

Lavanya nodded her head smiling at Mrs. Kapoor. She could not believe that such a rude man could be the son of someone so sweet. While his words were fully of pride and arrogance, Mrs. Kapoor's words were like honey, so sweet and gentle.

"You must be tired na! Come I will show you your room."

Lavanya followed Mrs. Kapoor up the stairs. Even though Mrs. Kapoor had insisted that Lavanya leave her bags downstairs and let the servants get them to her room later, Lavanya had assured Mrs. Kapoor that she would be fine carrying them up herself. Mrs. Kapoor unlocked the door to Lavanya's room and let her in. The room was beautiful. Mrs. Kapoor, went around turning the lights on and then showed Lavanya the attached washroom and walk in closet. She then went ahead and drew the curtains in the room. One side of the room, contained sliding glass doors that opened into a private terrace/garden. Across the garden was another room, with the same sliding glass doors. Lavanya stood by the large glass doors first admiring the beauty of the garden, that looked so enchanting under the moonlight and then she wondered who occupied the room across the garden. When Mrs. Kapoor noticed Lavanya curiously gazing at the room, she went up to her and told her the room belonged to her son. Lavanya was surprised to hear this and was unable to say anything. Mrs. Kapoor then smiled at Lavanya and told her how glad she was that Lavanya was going to be staying with them. "It will be great to have another girl in the house." She had told Lavanya, giving her a light hug and then left to rejoin the celebrations going on downstairs.

Lavanya sat down upacking her things. She was tired, however wanted to get as much as possible done today, as she had many things she had to do tomorrow. Apply for some part time jobs, apply to colleges. But right now the only thing that occupied Lavanya's mind was her to be neighbour. "So what if "he" is right next to my room? That does not mean I have to talk to him or be friendly! Yes, I will just ignore him!" With that thought, Lavanya, jumped in her bed and before she knew it, she fell asleep.

Part 3

Shaurya banged his door shut, finally escaping the craziness going on downstairs. Between all the pictures the "aunties" had brought for him to look at, as prospective brides and all the lectures he was getting from the "uncles" about how to manage time, and what to study further, only one thought occupied Shaurya's mind. "Who was that girl?" Unbuttoning his shirt Shaurya continued to ponder on thought. When suddenly his eyes noticed the curtains of the room across his own were drawn. The bed that Shaurya now had a clear view of was occupied. Occupied by "that girl!" The girl who had put Shaurya's mind in turmoil since the time he had laid eyes on her, and herself slept so carelessly. Shaurya could take it no longer. How would he be able to get any sleep without knowing who that crazy, strange, and impudent girl was?

"Maa!" Shaurya yelled, his eyes still darted towards the bed. Shaurya waited an approximate five seconds before yelling once again this time even louder than before, if that was possible, "Maa!"

Mrs. Kapoor, Shaurya's mother, Anjali, opened the door to his room, surprised at the sudden beckoning by her son. "What is it Shaurya, why are you yelling like this?" Anjali asked in her gentle voice.

Shaurya now turned to his mother, "who is that girl?"

"Who?" Anjali was puzzled by Shaurya's question she could see no girl in his room. When Shaurya pointed to the room across the garden, she realized he was asking about Lavanya.

"Oh, her! She is my friend's daughter from America. She is going to be staying with us, she plans to attend college here."

"What? You mean to say I will have to bear that…that…" Shaurya searched for the right words to describe her, but his mind seemed to have currently run out of words.

"What are you talking about beta? She is a very nice girl. I am sure you both will get along fine." Anjali went up to Shaurya gave him a little kiss on the cheek, wished him good night, and left Shaurya's room.

"'Will get along.' I don't think so Mom. I could never be friend with someone like "her". Never! Not now, not ever!" Shaurya forcefully drew the curtains in his room and went to bed.

***

Lavanya stretched her arms towards the ceiling as she got out of bed. She gave a quick glance at the clock that lay on the table by her bed. It was three o'clock in the morning. Due to the jetlag, Lavanya knew, she would not be able to go back to bed. She decided to take a nice warm bath and then unpack all her things.

The sun rays spread all around the room, as Lavanya finished unpacking. She went to stand by the glass doors and bask in the warmth of the sun. She stood looking out at the garden flowers, thinking about all that she had to do today. The curtains of the room across her were drawn. Lavanya shuddered at the thought of having to see "his" face first thing in the morning. However, to her surprise it was not Shaurya but the maid who was drawing the curtains. She smiled at her silliness for even thinking that "the prince" would do something like drawing the curtains of his room. Of course everything was done for him, without him even lifting a finger! The maid moved out of the way and Lavanya got a view of Shaurya who was sitting in bed talking on his cell phone, oblivious to the eyes that watched him from across the garden. There was no doubt that he was very handsome and from far away even seemed like a decent person. If Lavanya had not encountered his rude manners the day before she might have even thought about getting to know him better. But she knew his kind, and there was no way she was interacting with him under any conditions. She would mind her own business and hopefully he would do the same.

A knock on the door interrupted Lavanya's thoughts. She opened the door to find the maid she had seen across the garden, in "his" room a few minutes ago, now stood before her.

"Mam' Anjali madam has requested you to come join them downstairs for breakfast." The maid delivered the message and started to walk away.

Lavanya gave herself a quick glance in the mirror. She wanted to make sure she looked presentable, as she was going to meet Mr. Kapoor for the first time. She then followed the maid down the hall that would eventually lead her to the dinning hall. It was indeed a big house. If the maid was not there to guide Lavanya she might have even gotten lost. Lavanya slowly entered the dinning hall to find Mr. Kapoor seated at the end of a very long dinning table. He looked like a very stern and strict man.

"Good morning Uncle!" Lavanya greeted Mr. Kapoor, assuming it would be okay to call him uncle as Mrs. Kapoor had insisted Lavanya call her aunty the night before.

Mr. Kapoor raised his head to give a quick look towards Lavanya and then gestured, telling her to take a seat. Lavanya sat on the chair beside his. As an awkward silence started to slowly creep into the large dinning hall, Anjali, entered with the maid beside her holding Lavanya's breakfast plate. Anjali's smile just brightened the room, Lavanya smiled at her. There was just something about Anjali that made you smile. The son must take after the father; Lavanya thought and chuckled a little under her breath.

The plate of food was placed in front of Lavanya as Anjali took a seat across from her, on the other side of Mr. Kapoor. Looking at the omelette and toasted bread with butter smeared on it, made Lavanya realize how hungry she was. She had not had anything to eat since the time she had got on the flight from America. This was her first time travelling on a plane and therefore, she did not take it well and was sick for most of the journey. She was glad that the sickness she felt had worn off and she had regained her appetite.

"Isn't your 'ladla' up yet?" Mr. Kapoor finally spoke. He had a deep voice and didn't sound as kind as Mrs. Kapoor.

"He is up. But you know your son. He will take his time." Anjali replied to Mr. Kapoor, and smiled at Lavanya.

"Have you spoken to him about his marriage?" Mr. Kapoor inquired.

"Oh Raju! He just got back yesterday. We will talk about all that later."

So that is what his name is, 'Raju' sounds sort of strange for a man of his status. 'Raju!' It must be a nick name for something more suitable, like Rakesh, Rajesh or even better Rajeshwar. Now that was indeed very suitable Rajeshwar Kapoor. Add a little Rai in the middle there, Rajeshwar Rai Kapoor and you would have the perfect name for a big business tycoon. Mrs. Kapoor, should really be careful about who she calls him Raju in front of. Despite what Shakespeare said, 'what is in a name, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet', names do make a difference. If they didn't then why wouldn't people name their sons 'Ravan' after all it is just a name? By the way what was "his" name? Whatever his name is, the perfect name for him would be "Rajkumar", since he acted like one!

Lavanya was busy thinking when Anjali reapeated her question to Lavanya asking her about her plans for the day, hoping this time she would get a response. Anjali's attempts were rewarded when her question managed to break through Lavanya's thoughts and reach her ears.

"Oh, umm… I was planning to go and apply to some colleges."

"Okay, well if you want Raju can drop you he is just heading out."

"No Aunty, thanks. But I have to get some papers and stuff ready first. That might take some time and uncle might get late." There were no papers to get ready but Lavanya made the excuse in order to avoid the long and awkward drive with Mr. Kapoor. She then excused herself from the table and left to go back to her room, where she would wait till Mr. Kapoor had left to herself leave the house.

***

Applying to the colleges was a second priority for Lavanya, the first thing she had to do was to arrange for a part time job. She asked the taxi driver to drop her off at the nearest shopping complex. She was sure she would find some employment opportunities there. She went from one shop to another being rejected again and again. Since the shopping complex was in a "rich" area, the shops also seemed very "high class". Lavanya was not being rejected again and again because the employers didn't find her suitable. It was because once Lavanya would enter the shop she would realize how unsuitable the job was for her. She just couldn't serve one snobby rich lady after another, all day long! This would cause her to purposely perform poorly during the interview and therefore would end up being rejected.

Finally, Lavanya found a job for herself. It was at a restaurant. While it was true that most of the clientele that would be dining at the restaurant would be the rich, it was better than the clothing stores. At least at the restaurant she just had to take the food orders and bring the food out. She did not have to lie again and again telling the women how good they looked in a particular dress, even if it looked absolutely hideous.

The manager at the restaurant was quiet impressed by Lavanya and being short staffed asked her to start right away. Lavanya was more than glad to do so. Her first day at work was going by very smoothly and Lavanya was enjoying her work until "he" and his gang of friends walked in. As Lavanya watched them enter the restaurant acting as though they owned it, she secretly hoped that they would select any other table than the one she had to serve. However, it was no use, because that was the table selected by them.

Lavanya unwillingly, picked up her notepad and pencil and went to up to the table.

"What could I get you all today?" She asked with a fake smile plastered on her face.

"You? What are you doing here?" Shaurya asked, quiet taken aback to see the strange girl from last night standing before him as his server.

"Taking your order, Sir!" Lavanya gave Shaurya the same sarcastic smile she had the night before, during their encounter at the gate. Shaurya realized there was no point in asking her why or what she was doing here.

"Okay! Why don't you start guys, I'll just be back" Shaurya told his friends and left to go to the washroom.

Lavanya had almost finished taking the orders. All who remained were Shaurya and another friend of his, Prithvi. Shaurya was still not back. Prithvi, found Lavanya extremely pretty, and this was no surprise. Lavanya was a very attractive girl, who many said would look even prettier if she smiled a bit more.

"What would you like sir?" Lavanya asked Prithvi.

He raised his head from the menu, and gave Lavanya a mischievous smile, "I don't like anything on the menu." Prithvi declared shutting the menu and continued to smile notoriously at Lavanya. Lavanya had no option but to smile back at him, even though she loathed the way he was looking at her.

"What you like me to do? Sir!" Lavanya spoke, trying hard to fight the anger that was seeping within her.

"Well there is a lot you could do! Just depends how far you are willing to go." Prithivi now turned to one of his friends and gave him a quick wink before turning his attention back to Lavanya. "How about something hot and steamy?"

"Okay! Sounds good! I will be right back." Lavanya announced, gave a quick flirtatious smile to Prithivi and left.

Lavanya returned, to the table holding a large glass of vanilla milkshake in her hand.

"You forgot to take my order." Shaurya said to Lavanya, as he took his seat returning from the washroom.

"On moment Sir, I have something for you friend here." Lavanya said to Shaurya in the most polite manner she knew. She then proceeded to pour the vanilla milkshake over Prithvi's head.

"That should cool down your desire for something 'hot and steamy'" Lavanya gave a quick smile to Prithvi who was too shocked and surprised just like everyone else on the table to say anything.

As Lavanya turned to leave the table, Shaurya grabbed her arm, making her stop.

"What was that for?" Shaurya asked, extremely confused and puzzled.

"I believe in giving people what they deserve." Lavanya retorted, in a non-regretful tone.

"Is that so? Okay then." Shaurya now waved to the manager who stood right by the bar, while still holding Lavanya's arm in the other.

"What sort of service is this? My friends and I have been coming here for years and have never been treated so rudely. This is totally unacceptable!"

"I am so sorry sir! I will fire this server immediately" The manager said in an extremely worried and apologetic tone.

"There is no need. I quit!" Lavanya announced freeing herself from Shaurya's hold and throwing down her apron. "Actually, fire me! Because according to the contract I signed this morning if you fire me without notice you have to pay me for two weeks." Saying this Lavanya walked away, leaving a puzzled Shaurya behind. He had never met or known anyone quiet like her.
