Chapter 251- A brother's concern

Poornima had just completed her homework and was about to switch off the table lamp in her room when she heard the knock on the door.

She went to the door and saw Aakash standing there.

" What happened Aakash, why this late" she asked stepping out of her room as Nami was already sleeping.

" Didi for the past few days I am having so many questions, so many confusions, today I am unable to sleep. Will you talk to me didi" asked Aakash, and Poornima say her brother who was in 8^th standard had tears.

" Come let us go to Suman Chachi's room. Adwaith is asleep right. He wont suddenly wake up and cry "

" No didi he is very much asleep. He is tired also as we played for sometime" told Aakash.

" Ok then we will go " told Poornima and then they both entered Suman's room and Poorni switched on the lights and they sat on the bed.

" Tell me Aakash what has been affecting you " asked Poorni.

" Didi is it a truth that in our society baby girls are killed when they are inside Maa" he asked.

Poorni looked at him. When Suman Chachi had broken down all the kids were there in the hall. She had expected some questions from Aakash then as the other two kids didn't understand things. But since he didn't come that day she thought he might have found answers himself. But that was not to be.

" Didi I am asking you " nudged Aakash.

" Yes Aakash it happens. It happens because girls go to another family. People have to give huge dowry to marry off a girl. So people don't want girls " told Poorni.

" Didi bade dadu throw Anu Maa out because she didn't bring dowry. Did Maa, Vindhya Chachi and Suman Chachi bought big dowry. Now when you go people here will give dowry. For Nami also dowry will be given. When I marry dowry will be taken. My Maa was not married because she is good, only because she is rich" asked Aakash.

Poorni didn't know what to tell, she wished Suman Chachi was there to answer him. But then it was not to be. She had to answer. She thought for a while and carefully chose her words.

" Aakash what happened to my Maa is not dowry. She belonged to another caste. Coming to dowry. Every family gives something lovingly to their daughters as wedding present. That is not dowry. When people ask over and above what is given to the daughter it becomes a problem. In this house Dadi has not taken dowry. That I am sure off. Whether it is Renu Maa, Vindhya Chachi or Suman Chachi they were given wedding presents by their families. Nothing above that was asked. Dadi says bahu itself is Mahalakshmi not what she brings.

I believe tomorrow for your didi and Nami when alliance comes Papa, Chachu and all will ensure they don't sent us to a family that demands dowry. We are respected here, so they will send us only to a family that respects us

But these things happen in our society Aakash. We cannot change people. Only we can decide not to practice such things. When each person decides that this society becomes a better place"

Aakash nodded his head. Poorni patted him. He hugged her.

" Didi I love Maa, I love you, how can people think of a world without mother and sister. How can people do that didi. If girls are not there from where mother and sister will come. Who will sing lullaby, who will tie Rakhi" he was crying.

" Aakash always keep this empathy for woman with you. The love you show to Maa, and your didi ensure you show it to every woman in the society by respecting her, standing up for her when situation arises. Now go and sleep " she told him. Aakash wiped his tears and they switched off the lights, came out and closed the door of Suman's room and went to their respective rooms.

" Bhabi let us put the poster like that" told Suman. They were arranging their stall for the trade fest. Sreedhar and Sudhir had gone to the trade fest organizers to finish some formalities. Tilak was there with the three ladies helping them in setting up the stall. They had reached Singapore by noon. Post lunch , they had gone to the trade fest committee office to get the details of their stall. Now they were arranging it. It was evening now.

" Shall I get some juice for all of you from the restaurant" asked Tilak.

" Jethji let Sudhir Jethji and Sreedhar come. Now it is late evening. We will finish this in half an hour. Then we all can go for dinner" told Suman and others agreed.

Tilak looked at Suman. He could never tell she was the girl who had suffered so much trauma. How did she withstand it. He was not surprised she didn't wanted to marry Murali. That strengthened his belief she loved someone in college. But currently she seemed happy with Sreedhar. Tilak could see that in their way from airport to hotel where in the car Sreedhar and Suman ended up near to each other as Sudhir and Vindhya went in another car with luggage and consignment for the trade fest.

Sreedhar was gently caressing her hand and she hid it deftly with her pallu and one could see it only if they are expecting that from them. Renu was right. Love can happen once again. There was no point digging her past, if she is happy in the present. He was not sure whether Sudhir and Vindhya knew. Sometime during this trip the topic had to propped up, decided Tilak as he heard Sudhir's voice. Soon it was cacophony of voices with all of them talking and finally proceeding to restaurant for dinner.
