"This does sound exciting me, yeah I will take it Bally" II dusted off cookie crumbs off her lips
Baly smiled in appreciation

"Nobody is out to get you Iyer" he said calmly

II didnt nod

She really didnt like him batting for Ritu
She had had a not so pleasant convo after returning from Paris

Delhi September was balmy, and not muggy
Amma was readying for Navaratri at Rohini

She was urging II to start doing golu (the stair step arrangement of figurines)

"U have a child, I am not asking you to snap out of it or anything. But appreciate whatever u have raja" Amma told her in a her own stern/kind way

II was doing her best

She had escaped from Paris before things got "physical"
She was sure he would be back for it soon

She imagined going through a miscarriage all over again

"U know how needy I am... CPA, MBA, MS sab karke bhi kuch nahi mila" she smiled self deprecatingly

"Zyaada ro mat I got u out of IT/SW/architect/sales/jootey ghisna types" he said quietly

She nodded

"Ritu ko mat bol abhi kuch, we havent had a meeting yet, shes been coming in late all week, once we do, she will tell u abt it"

"U are spilling the beans because u like me more?" she asked eagerly

"Shhh" he warned "Dont push it Iyer" he smiled awkwardly

"I am sorry, we havent had a good relationship

"Because u spent the whole year and a half comparing me to her" he told her bluntly

II bend down over her coffee

"I am not trying to preach to u, but u need to learn to be less emotional and more objective" he said quietly

She nodded though it stung badly

"She is a KMPG employee just as you are. She has no reason to get u fired" he said

"But she has every reason to make me look poor" II argued

"No... no... dont interrupt OK? Baat sun" he cleared his throat "She knows u are from an influential family. From her standpoint you have "it all" he said cynically

II nodded speechlessly
"I told her u had a health scare. Thats it... aur kuch nahi kaha. I know u dont like her" he said

II's eyes filled up

"U need to get that out of your head. I dont know who ur boss will be" he said thoughtfully

"KMPG is restructuring its Strategy Consulting Financial Consulting Human Capital Consulting all of it" he said

She nodded

She was being offered "not a mid level but soon to be a mid level" role in Financial Consulting division
where she was going to be working with company CFOs to gather and analyze information to help CFOs make good biz decisions

"She might turn out to be ur boss even in the new div" he said quietly

II was not so excited any more

It was like Ritu was chasing her down

She sighed

"Separate the person from the role II, or atleast learn to... I can mentor you" he said comfortingly

She HATED the idea of getting "work therapy"

"Its no longer big or buggy" he said nodding

"But there are 100s of over the counter transaction processing SW out there, why build our own and try and fit a round peg on a square hole?" she lamented

"I dont see it that way Iyer" he shook his head

"Oh" she resigned

"Nobody except I know your conflict with Ritu. Lets work on keeping it that way" he urged

"I have never voluntarily been insubordinate" she huffed

"You DONT have to. Tere attitude se maloom chalta hai bhiru" he switched to Mumbaiya

They were quiet

The cafe was closing for the evening

"Ja... beti hai ghar pe" he warned

"Aap nahi aaogey ghar?"

"Tere miya ne craft beer ka waada kiya hai when he comes I shall come" he winked

She nodded

"BTW does Ritu know ur quiet dude?" he asked suddenly

"Nahi to" she remarked quickly

"Nahi... bas poochha" he said pushing his chair back to give her a hug

I was very confused with last line but then I understood bally was trying to say if ritu knows the dude like acquintance type.

I don't think so.Not typical of Dude to be getting involved with II's positioning.
But Ritu has always had extended conversations , general networking and stuff with him whenever he has come by to see II at her work place.
