One trick pony

She lay in bed as Nivi somersaulted all over her , blowing spit bubbles and singing to herself
"Athai aathuku polama?" "Nandu na paakalam?" (can we go to Shanti Niketan and see Nandu?)

Nivi listened attentively

And did a "Ooo" with her fat arm and waved frantically
"Thatha oda bye bye poreya?" (want to go out with Dadu?)

Nivi stood up in bed wobbled and fell back, giggling

She was impatient wanting to get off the bed and go down and check on Ranjan

It was around 8, ranjan wasnt home

II checked her phone

Went to texts with hubby

"Awake yet?" she typed and didnt send

Sam was with him, they might have gone to watch a French movie or his partners might have taken her out to dinner

II sighed and put the phone away and stared at the ceiling

"Financial Consulting" she whispered

Nivi sat on her belly and rode like horsee, her fave rocking spot
II rocked her like her belly was a pony for a bit

Nivi jumped hard

"Ayyo... no raja, it hurts Amma" she warned

And gently took her fat palm and rubbed it over her belly

"Cast a spell, so Amma can have a fat boy like you?" she smiled

"U look like Daddee I want him to look like me" she said sadly

Nivi rubbed her belly vigorously

And shrieked "Tha tha tha tha tha" (give give)

II's eyes filled up with hot tears

She sat up, and carried her downstairs

Ranjan sat on the swing nursing a drink

"Dad? Kab aaye?" she asked

"Huney puttar" he said thoughfully

Looking at the half eaten bowl of nuts "huney" was a while ago she realized

"Khaana kya khaayenge? Karhi banayi hai maine" she said

"Baingan bhi bana leen puttar" he said his eyes shining

She nodded

She sat by him and explained she no longer worked in SW Sales, and that she will be a thorough bred "consultant"

He was impressed he blessed her

He probably knew it all
He knew how unsuccessful she was despite having three professional degrees

But he was always kind...

"I am going to be telling CFOs how to do mindful book keeping" she said not believing herself

"R&B ko kaha?" he asked

"Nahi" she said

"Haan usne na khush hona hai na dukhi" he nodded matter of factly

II smiled...

"U know him well" she muttered

"Only too well" Ranjan sighed

Nivi tried to mow the lawn with a toy mower, checking the bin for cut grass, emptying it

Ranjan laughed heartily

She brought a handful of fake grass to Ranjan

"Oley oley" he picked her uo and hoisted her throwing her up in the air

Ranjan's phone buzzed

It was the dude

Ranjan bend down and smiled

"Tere liye hona hai gudiya, utha leen" he coaxed

She answered

"Hey" he said gruffly

"Dad has Nivi" she said

"Oh.. its you" he said

She could see the expression on his tone, she blushed

Ranjan politely walked the lawn pointing Nivi to the rose hedge by the fence

A guard that was inside for something walked over and began playing with her

She wanted the guard's godee since she cud go out to guard shed

"Itni jaldi uth gaye?" she asked

"Bike ride" he said

"Ha" she cackled

"Whattt?" he whined

"Nothing... its like an addiction isnt it?" she asked

"Its great in the morning" he went on the defensive

"Sam kaisi hain?" she asked

"Asleep" he laughed

"Aur Lasya?"

"Her too" he said

"Do u sleep in the study?" she asked

"No couch" he said

"Study pull out bed is short" II laughed

"Must be nice to laugh like that" he said gruffly

"To Kya kahoon?" she questioned

He sighed, and groaned

She walked the lounge away from Ranjan

"How is work?" he asked

She explained everything

Without the Bally mentorship part

"Huh" he exclaimed

"U think its a bad idea?" she asked

"No... I didnt say that" he said

"U have to admit I may not be a good deployment architect but I am atleast a good Accountant" she said shrilly

"Not MY words II" he warned

"Accounting... book keeping, audit... financial policy... thats all I know" she said primly

"If u say so" he said not willing to argue

"Atleast I might get a new boss" she went on the defensive trying to provoke him

"If thats what u want" he said carelessly

"I want" II went quiet

"Well... u took urself out of the situation, u cant get pregnant by yourself" he said frustrated

Rich color rose up her face
AYYO

NOT THAT TOPIC AGAIN

WHY DO WE KEEP GOING BACK TO IT
ITS LIKE YOU CANT THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE WHEN U HEAR MY VOICE

SO UNFAIR DA

RAKSHASAN!!

"No... no... not that" she lied

"Are u done with babies?" he asked shocked

"We have one no?" she explained

"Really? II?" he was baffled

"Raising one grappling between Paris and Delhi is hard enough" she said sagely

"We cant raise 2?" he asked

"Any way... when is Sam returning?" she asked

He was quiet...

"She misses Lasya" Ii explained

"I bet" he said cynically

"Bachi hai" II defended both kids

"Are u working 18 hour days?" she accused

"Umm.. no" he said

"That was a slow denial" she accused

"Wud u have believed it if I had denied it quick?" he asked

"Lets face it... I cant win with u II" he said gruffly

"U keep trying tho" she mocked

"Guilty as charged" he said huskily

Equally happy to be bk and catching updates fresh and hot.
My parents love cho and so did my paati. I was sad to see him go too.
There are some people who stand out just by being themselves and I believe he was one of them

Cho Ramaswamy and Tughlaq were obsessions in my family. I would listen to the LP of Mohammad Bin Tughlaq and knew the play by heart as a kid though i did not know who Batuta was or Daulatabad was.
I would read the onnra anna naaledu and look at the cartoon on the wrapper and graduated reading the articles when i started a course in political science. I was a great fan of his satire and sense of humour.

I read the magazine post his and his protege's demise...it was a bit different yet so like the format he created and guarded for decades.

One trick pony too good a title. Finances and accounting ironic that a person who's thrifty personally has proven to be different and enterprising in a corporate .Something tells me that II should be able to hold on to the moors here and secure her boat well.

Uninvited Guest...

two three... four weeks passed by, II transitioned the one remaining headcount on her team
Between romance shaadi delivery and dizzying walk through life as a wife and Mom II lost two of her female employees to attrition

Ritu was kinder and more mellow for no reason
II suspected Bally had "told her" the real reason and not the health scare

"Can we do lunch before u go away?" she asked twirling a pencil thoughtfully

II was a bit startled

"Umm... sure, Gurgaon ya weekend mein Delhi or my house?" she offered

"Oh YOUR house?" Ritu asked trying to hide her awe

"I cook a lot of South Indian. I experiment with a lot of Northie food" she smiled

"Dont u have cooks?" Ritu asked

II nodded uncomfortably

"I wudnt even know the difference between doodh and dahi" Ritu smirked

"Umm... its fun to cook especially when hubs is not in town"

I AM TOO BUSY HAVING SEX AND SLEEPING IT OFF

"He doesnt eat what u cook?" Ritu asked

"Nahi... he does... always... but he misses being an omnivore" II laughed

"U guys are making it work girl!!" Ritu expressed solidarity inviting a fist bump

"Umm.. I guess" II quickly withdrew her fist

"Did u seriously invite me to your home?" Ritu asked

II nodded tentatively

SURE
TRY SELLING THAT IDEA TO HUBS
AFTER TWO YEARS OF MOANING AND BITCHING
THE BOSS IS YOUR BEST FRIEND NOW?

WELL HE'LL NEVER KNOW
HES IN PARIS
THERE!!

"Why not" she squeaked

"Main kya laoon?" Ritu asked

"Just urself" II said

"I thought I will ask Bally too" she blurted

Ritu looked at her enigmatically

"Are u friends with him outside of work?" she asked

"Oh umm... yeah.. I reported to him... he intervened when I was just abt ready to kill my hubs"II said somberly

The sound of that ... her ears heated up and her cheeks flamed...

"Oh" Ritu nodded, her face losing some of that joy, joy of being exclusive invitee

II reached for her phone hoping Ritu wud walk away

She texted Bally "weekend mein ghar aayenge?" she invited

And looked up and smiled at Ritu "TTYL?" she asked

AYYYO

She texted Akka randomly

"Ennoda boss invite pannirken for dinner on Sat" (i invited her) she said

"What day?" Ritu returned

"Saturday" II chuckled apologetically

"ADI PAAVI" Akka texted

"I knowww" II texted back

~~~~~~~~
It was almost middle of October, Navaratri was approaching
Amma had stopped by to give her a huge cane basket of traditional wooden and clay figurines
Sam had been back for a month now
II was talking to R&B when he was in Paris not over the weekends
Argent had let go of one partner, Jacque and had hired a US based guy
There was a lot of chaos and changes at his work too
They were changing the funding model
They were hiring a data company to graph and conduct market landscape analysis
It was not working so well... A food waste management startup that was targeted at the restaurant industry had tanked
An Industrial Internet of Things startup that was projected to transform how oil fields operated had failed too
II's sambar chhaunk sizzled
Nivi sat on the floor picking up grapes from a large plastic tray.
Ranjan read the newspaper on the kitchen table
"Taste nahi karwayegi gudiya?" he smiled
"Ha ha ha its the same sambar u eat every day" she said humbly
"Nahi nahi... aaj tey koi hore gall haigi" he teased
"I hate her, I am hapy I no longer have to report to her"
AND I AM HETEROSEXUAL DAD
"Theek hai theek hai" he nodded afraid his DIL was going to go off ona longish tirade
"Here I even put 4 baby idlis in it" she smiled
"Tan ne seedha airport se aana hai shammi?" he asked
She nodded
"chache nu bula le puttar, he knows Bally" Ranjan begged
II exhaled and nodded quietly
Nivi shrieked
And charged towards the formal dining-formal living-lounge-annexe...
R&B walked in with a chuckle picking her up and hoisting her
AYYYOYO
WHAT IS HE DOING HERE?
"Cheating?" he asked casually...
II turned red...
How long have I known SoSy?!?!? ... Like 1.5 years.. Maybe? I know I was reading SoSy in 2015 april/may while I was dying of spring pollen allergies .. So I guess safe to say atleast 1.5 years.. And yet, each time this Dude comes and says his nice/teasing oneliner.. I smile.. Like I read about Dude's teasing for the first time... Like, Why?? Why do I still feel that this tall, quiet one, with now a baby, is still desirable? Hats off Nisha!!
