Chapter 1

Insignificant Invigilation

Exam season is always brutal. As poor students lean over their almost empty answer sheets the poorer teachers invigilate them emphatically. Hogwarts had never been quieter except for this time of the year when wizarding examinations were held. Working hard and learning with all your might was one thing and working through plans to cheat was quite another. James Potter though was interested in the latter. He had somehow skipped Harry and inherited everything from his Grandfather and Grand God father, James Potter and Sirius black respectively. He wasn't in anyway alone, however. Peter Purcell, his best friend since his first year at Hogwarts accompanied him in all his traits.

Now, as the two of them sat in their class giving their first exam of the year (Defense Against the Dark Arts), about which Harry had explained quite clearly that they must clear if they wished to appear in their O.W.Ls next year, they planned to get out of it somehow. As per mutual agreement they had decided that they'll summon their quill that knew what to write all by itself as they had dictated it all notes just the previous night but they weren't allowed a wand since it was a theoretical exam. As always they had found a way around these rules making these quite inefficient for themselves. They had sneaked into the examination hall the fake wand that they had bought from Uncle George's shop. It would perform one spell and then turn into a rubber duck. If their spell would be detected no wand will be found on them and they will have summoned the quills they needed.

"At the count of three, then." James whispered to Peter who sat right behind him. He leaned over his chair as Tom passed by them. James watched him move further to the very back of the class. When Tom reached three desks away from the wall James started counting. "1, 2, 3, now!"

"Accio!" Peter whispered, pocketed his fake wand, grabbed the quills that flew straight into his hand and sat up straight.

The moment the spell was cast an alarm went off due to the spell blocking charm applied on the hall and to no one's surprise the alarm rang right over Peter's head. Tom approached him.

"Yes, professor?" The moment Tom approached him Peter made the cutest of the faces and asked him innocently.

"What have you summoned, Mr. Purcell?" Tom asked, not wanting to play with the situation.

"Professor, we're not allowed a wand."

"But a spell was cast." Tom replied him quietly. He didn't need a confession. He would most definitely find a wand on him to prove it. "Turn out your pockets, or I'll do it."

Both James and Peter stared at him. Tom wasn't smiling like usual but he had a frown on his face that said quite clearly that he was in mood to kid around. They hadn't known what had happened to him but they knew something had happened. Tom hadn't been around for 2 weeks, his classes had been free anyways since he had already completed the course and were devoted to revision and learning time for the students to prepare for exams and then today was his first day back when he had suddenly walked into the examination hall to invigilate. He had not wished anyone Good Morning and had distributed exam sheets to everyone by hand. None of them had seen him draw out his wand. He hadn't even wished anyone Good luck, just distributed them their papers and had roamed around the class, ever since.

Right now, he felt more a grown up than he had ever seemed to his students. Tom had practically threatened them, while usually he would lecture them a bit, have some fun, advise them to not to cheat and leave them to it. His idea of cheating during exams was, "Cheating is always allowed, until and unless, you are caught," and usually he didn't catch them but take away their source of cheating or wipe out their sheets clean and tell them to write it all over again.

When Peter didn't turn out his pockets Tom took the step to do so. Although Harry had prohibited him to use a spell without a wand, he hadn't had enough time to talk to him about what had happened at the Ministry because Tom had come around only this morning and although he wasn't feeling himself he had agreed to invigilate as Harry needed him. Harry had only forbidden him to use magic without a wand which Tom felt quite able to do since he had awoken, and offered him the Elder wand which Tom had refused on purpose. He didn't think he deserved it although he was now the true master of it. He also didn't think there was anything wrong with him using magic without a wand either, no matter what Harry said. He didn't remember the chaos at St. Mungoes or the fact that his powers had been all over the place. He had felt discomfort after returning from St. Mungoes while performing occlumency to protect his mind from Latnok and had fainted because of it but he had awoken only today after that incident and since morning nothing unusual had happened but then he hadn't used magic since morning.

To his content when he had awoken he had not seen Riddle around. Something that he had been quite glad about and had not enquired about from Harry on purpose. He wanted to forget about his existence like a bad dream.

When Peter didn't turn out his pockets he stretched out his hand a little towards Peter and performed a summoning charm, "Accio!"

Everything that Peter had on him was in Tom's hands. Not only the quills that he had summoned, the rubber duck that had been a wand, or the fat colorful toffees hidden in turnovers of his sleeves but every single piece of cloth that he was wearing had been torn away from him and now was held by Tom who was too shocked to not to know what to do. Suddenly, Peter disappeared, but only for others. Tom could still see him but he didn't know who had cast the disillusionment charm. As he turned around, stood at the door, to his dismay, Riddle, well hidden in a disillusionment charm himself, pulling off Harry's invisibility cloak. Though, Tom could see him clearly. He was a little taken aback by that. Previously, he couldn't see through his own or Riddle's disillusionment charms. Now, that he had realised it, he remembered he had been able to see through Riddle's disillusionment charm when Latnok had come to visit him as well. Only during the morning Tom hadn't seen him because he had been wearing Harry's cloak. What was happening to him?

Harry had set Riddle up to follow Tom wherever he went for the safe side. Riddle was glaring at Tom quite angrily at what he had done as again Tom felt something warm slip down his nose and saw dark red drops of blood dripping on his shirt.

Riddle swished his wand once and a long robe appeared over peter who was hiding himself behind the desk despite the fact that he was disillusioned but he had felt that Tom could still see him although it wasn't possible. Riddle who had to take matters in his own hands swished his wand once more and he was no longer wearing a black cloak but was wearing exactly what Tom was. He approached Tom who stood staring at him unable to get over everything so quickly and still bleeding while the rest of the class, especially James stared with their mouths open. Riddle put Tom under a disillusionment charm and appeared in the class himself. For a moment he stared at Tom covered in his own disillusionment charm. He could see through his own charm. He had never before been able to do that. What was happening?

All the students were quite confused as they had no idea what was going on. First, Tom had cast the summoning charm and accidentally pulled all clothes off of Peter then disillusioned him which was obviously required and then started bleeding??? And had disappeared and re-appeared, what was he doing? And now Peter appeared again in his long black cloak.

"Accompany me to the Headmaster's." Riddle said to both James and Peter and to Tom who now stood invisible with a handkerchief pressed to his nose which had almost turned red.

The four of them entered Harry's office. Harry was at his desk, writing an official letter when they all entered.

"Yes?" Harry looked questioningly at Tom but then saw him holding a wand he realized it was Riddle. The moment he saw him he understood something had gone wrong because he had told Riddle to stay hidden until it was absolutely necessary and he was under the impression that Riddle didn't need telling twice.

"These students were caught cheating." Riddle said quietly to Harry who frowned at James and Peter.

"You have one opportunity to explain yourselves, so, make use of it." Harry addressed the two of them and both looked at their feet. Harry understood, they had been cheating. "Very well, you two will not be allowed to give any theoretical exam of yours with the rest of the class, you'll be doing it down in the dungeons, separately." At Harry's words they both opened their mouths to argue than shut them up realizing they didn't hold the right to anymore. "And Professor Tom will be invigilating you." said Harry motioning towards Riddle.

"No!" They both shouted at once.

"May I ask why?" Harry asked them, confused.

"I'd rather if you did not." Riddle replied giving a meaningful look to Harry who understood.

"Look who's talking!" James retorted at Riddle, taking him to be Tom.

"Mr. Potter, is this in anyway appropriate for you to address your teacher?'' Harry asked his eyebrows raised.

"But Dad,-_"

"Enough, I'd rather if you returned to your dormitories." James looked like he wanted to argue but suppressed everything he wanted to say. Harry saw that look on his face and stopped him.

"James, I'd like a word in private."

As Peter left James looked expectantly at Harry hoping he would be told everything he didn't know. "Dad, what's going on?"

"Look, whatever is going on cannot be shared with you because you are not of age yet, but, I want to ask you for a favour. I already have too much on my mind than to cater your mischief. Please, James, this is the time when I need your support. Don't do anything troublesome; don't get yourself into any sort of trouble."

James, who wasn't expecting Harry to say anything of the sort nodded quietly. He knew when his father was serious.

"One more thing," Harry continued. "Please, don't give any trouble to Tom. He has too much to deal with right now. Whatever happened today happened because Tom wasn't at his best and there is a reason for it. You will be told of it when you'll be ready to know. All I can ask you right now is to help him get through this time rather than make it difficult for him."

"But how can I help him with anything if I don't know about it?" James persisted questioningly.

"I will tell you everything when it's time. Please, bear with it for a little while and make things easy

for him."

James knew nothing he would say would make Harry tell him anything. So he nodded and turned around to leave. When he turned he looked at Riddle asking him silently of what was going on who looked away quickly. James felt weird. He left quietly but he had decided to find out what was going on and in the process he wouldn't give any trouble to Tom if Tom didn't give him any.

A filler kind of update but again the starting updates are always like it.
But it was written good, all the peter fiasco and all and the change in both riddle and tom are shown well.
Waiting to go on in this journey.

Hi Peri! Am so so sorry, it's been a long time since I commented on this story though I have always sneaked in time to read it. As always, you continue to excel and break your own record with unique twists and turns. I hope James doesn't get into deep trouble with his curiosity. I also wonder if the incident with voldemort could have led to basic character trait changes for both Tom and riddle. If so I will miss old Tom immensely:(

Chapter 2

Problematic Powers

"What's going on? Where's Tom?" Harry asked Riddle at last realizing that Riddle's deduction had turned out to be correct as Riddle handed him his invisibility cloak back. During the days that Tom had been unconscious both Harry and Ginny had used the very same cloak to stay guard outside Tom's room. And Harry hadn't refrained from hiding that from Riddle. He wanted him to know that he was not trusted around here but Harry had no choice but to keep him with them.

He had only been glad that these few days had passed peacefully. Riddle had not left Tom's room once since his arrival here. Harry had removed the Fat Lady's portrait from Tom's room to make sure that the secret of Riddle's existence stayed a secret. Instead he had hung Dumbledore's portrait not wanting to leave Riddle alone with him.

Today when Tom awoke, he had asked Riddle to disguise himself and Riddle had asked for his cloak. To his surprise when he had asked why he suddenly needed his cloak to hide himself from Tom, Riddle told him the truth. He told him that he and Tom could see through each other's disillusionment charms. They had done so when Latnok had visited them. Harry had then instructed him to keep an eye on Tom under the cloak.

"Here." Riddle replied as he removed the disillusionment charm off of him. Tom stood quite confused with that handkerchief still pressed to his nose, which was now completely red but to Harry's relief his bleeding was finally coming to an end.

"What did you do?" Harry asked him as Riddle changed into his black robes again.

"I just used a summoning charm." Tom replied him feeling quite embarrassed.

"And?" Harry asked to know more.

Tom who was too embarrassed to reply remained silent as Riddle spoke. "He pulled off the boy's self respect and dignity."

"What?!" Harry exclaimed not getting what Riddle had actually meant.

"I pulled off Peter's clothes unintentionally." Tom clarified quietly sitting down opposite Harry.

For a moment Harry looked like he wanted to laugh out loud, then seeing as neither of them was in any mood to do so, gulped it down himself. Riddle was too disgusted and Tom was too confused.

"Harry, what's happening to me?" Tom had finally decided to give in.

"I don't know and the one who knows..." Harry looked at Riddle. "You're just not ready to listen to him."

"I don't need to." Tom replied dryly. He hadn't even known Harry had actually allowed Riddle to stay here until Riddle had walked inside the examination hall let alone the fact that Riddle knew something about his out of control his powers. But even if Riddle could help, his help was the last thing he needed right now.

"But you have to." Harry persisted. "It'll be no good to anyone if this keeps going on. You'll be in much deeper trouble. You know what I was writing right now?" Tom shook his head. "It's an official letter to Latnok who sent me one this morning regarding someone he's sending here to teach. Remember what he had said?"

"I'm leaving my eyes behind to follow you." Tom replied quietly.

"And he's doing exactly the same. Tom, listen to what Riddle has to say, because this is very important. Look, I needed to have a word with the two of you to know clearly what had happened at the Ministry because right now all of us only know parts of it. I had thought of bringing this up then but as this incident has occurred I want an explanation right now. Please, Tom, let him help you."

Tom nodded quietly as Harry motioned to Riddle to tell them exactly what he thought was happening.

"As much as I have deciphered, his powers are at their best. Ever since we were children, I have known him to despise his powers, for that reason, he had subconsciously, for the most part, suppressed his powers. After what happened at the Ministry, his powers have returned to him in full. Now, he was never prepared for them, and because of that they are radiating out of him. As he cannot control them they are working in an odd way. His summoning charm was too powerful, that is why he summoned everything along with the required object. If in a short period of time he is not able to control them, his life will be endangered. That is, he could die, if it doesn't get any better than this."

"But how? How does he exercise control?" Harry asked as Tom listened quietly.

"He needs time alone, isolation, from all, you, his friends, all his... emotions." He smirked as both Harry and Tom stared at him a little coldly. He continued disregarding their angry glares. "He needs to clear his mind and needs to learn to use his powers without a wand, as they don't require one."

"How do you know all this? Have you experienced it all as well?" Harry asked getting over his own feelings for Riddle. He wanted to know as they were twins, perhaps, at some point in his life, Riddle had been through all of this himself.

Riddle smiled smugly. It was after days that Harry had seen him smile but it was nothing like the way Tom smiled, which took away all your worries, it was mocking, sarcastic. "I have never had this misfortune as I have been disciplined enough since the very beginning to know how to control my own powers, which I inherited from a great man, a powerful wizard, a conqueror---_"

"Shut up!" Tom had said it quietly, but his voice was full of a threat Harry had never heard before. It wasn't desperate, it was threatening. He stood up and bore his eyes into Riddle's. As he neared him, he walked through the shield charm that Riddle usually kept around himself these days. On Harry's instructions and anyways he was smart enough not to keep out of one around Tom although it wasn't making a difference. Tom was walking through his shield charms like they weren't there. "He was nothing but a cruel murderer; he took lives, and killed innocent people for his own personal gain. You are right, I despise him, I despise his powers, I despise his blood, I despise his name, I despise you--_" Tom had never been so full of hatred before as he was right now. He was letting everything out that he had felt over the past years. He was angry. He was advancing on Riddle and had said as much when Riddle conjured a dagger out of nowhere.

The moment Tom's eyes fell on the sharp dagger, he stopped. He looked at it, then looked at Riddle. "Tell me you despise me, now Tom. Tell me you despise your father. Get over your fear of this material thing and look me in the eye. Tell me now you hate me. Prove me wrong now, Tom." Tom gulped down as his mouth went dry and he started sweating. He was shaking now; he back tracked as Riddle advanced on him smiling with sheer enjoyment capitalizing on his brother. But he was observing him closely. Tom was so vulnerable when exposed to his deepest fears. It was very easy to overpower him in a situation like this but otherwise his powers were too powerful to penetrate. Riddle was doing this on purpose but Tom didn't know that although if he did know Riddle didn't think it would have made a difference to him. His fear was much greater than any sort of reasoning.

"Stop it!" Harry shouted as everything started moving for Tom. He couldn't focus. He could see faces, hear voices, screams, shrieks, he could see Malfoy pinning his hands behind his back, could feel himself trying to struggle out of it, pleading to his brother to let him go and the heartless face of Riddle quite vivid to him as he had fallen at his feet, thrived in pain and yet had been thrown away like garbage. Tom was so scared he was moving away, finally he found himself slammed against a wall. He had no way to run. He closed his eyes and finally collapsed on the floor unconscious.
