Vicharaks & Thinkers
Amma watched her struggle to lie and cringe trying to speak the truth
She read her brochure or atleast glared at it, trying to buy seconds
Amma steered her towards benches placed across the room so people can look at artwork and think
"Aunty, he is a very nice man" she said
"Thanks Suvechha" Amma smiled
"He is a good boss, a good Dad and a good friend" she said haltingly
"Aap karti hain pasand unko?" Amma asked again
Suvi nodded slowly, as she felt her insides slide out of her mouth
She swallowed trying to keep her organs in
Amma sat down shakily?
She exhaled
"Aunty I did not lie" Suvi said in shock
Amma smiled weakly
"Hum chahte bhi they ki aap sach hi kahen" Amma said bravely
"This might be one of those things that has no meaning. He has no control over why someone likes him or how" Suvi began defending him in order to dilute her attraction
She realized it must be a huge blow for Amma to come face to face with someone thats NOT Nupur
Not Nupur AND is attracted to her son
"there is so much about him to like" Amma went on the defensive
Suvi nodded shocked "Haan main samjhi hai... but I mean... its not his fault I like him" she insisted
"I adored Nupur beta" Amma said wearily
She had rolled up the brochure into a tube, held on to it like it was a walking stick, using it as a crutch moving sideways so Suvi could sit
"Aapko kuch karne ka nahi hai aunty" Suvi offered a solution
"Aap he har baat ko tay karey ja rahin hain?" Amma said bluntly... but smiling
"The fact I like him shudnt make u do anything in haste. He doesnt want marriage, and I dont either" Suvi said calmly
Amma looked on in utter shock
"So u have discussed?" she asked
Suvi lowered her gaze, her bravado leaving her
"When lying becomes difficult aunty then we must speak the truth... I dont generally lie" Suvi said
"Aapki baat hui Neel se?" Amma asked
"I dont know why u are asking aunty, but if u ask Neel he will say he doesnt wnat to get married" Suvi spoke emotionlessly
There was a good 20 min pause
"I dont know if u know abt me, I married a married man, and now he doesnt live with us, he lives with his family. Thats not my whole life but its something that happened in my life" Suvi said
"I didnt expect to tell my boss's mother abt it" she chuckled "Aapko koi pressure feel nai karne ka hai aunty. there are many times we are tempted by things in life, not always its the right thing for us"
"From the moment he felt attraction for u you and him no longer have a formal relationship" Amma said clinically
"aapko Preet ne kaha?" Suvi asked without shock
"Kyon Neel se aap ummeed nahi karti kya ki won sach kahenge?" she asked
It bothered Amma that Suvi was beginning to know HER Neel
Suvi lowered her gaze again
"He doesnt want marriage aunty, any man will know admitting attraction to his mother means he is going to be forced into marriage" Suvi spoke all knowingly
"I wont lie... I LOVED Nupur" Amma said with difficulty
Suvi felt lonely and alone
"He loves Nupur a lot" Suvi said
Amma bristled, it irritated her to watch "some woman" defend HER son's love for his wife
"Uska hamey pata nahi" Amma said silkily, hinting "He is obviously attracted to YOU, how can he love his wife?"
"I struggle to watch him be single, and I miss Nupur a lot"
Suvi nodded...
"But I have to do the right thing" Amma said
Suvi's heart hammered
She held her breath
Amma was unveiling feels inside Suvi, that Suvi had kept locked up
"Bhuvan bhaisaab bhi yahi chahte hain" Amma spoke with an ache
HOW could a man that lost his daughter cheer for his son in law's second marriage?
Suvi felt like she had insinuated herself in all their minds
Their minds... and not their hearts
"Its just a stage of grief aunty" she persuaded
"He will ignore u and the feeling of loneliness will pass?" Amma asked cynically
Suvi didnt want to "pass"
"I hope so" she said in a whisper
"Aapke ghar mein kadwahat nahi hogi?" Amma asked almost hopefully
Atleast THAT will put an end to this whole ridiculous plan her heart cried
"Kadwa meetha kehne ke waaste koi nahi hai" Suvi said calmly
"Ur parents dont talk to u?" Amma asked eagerly, hoping secretly she was estranged and so she could convince Neel Suvi wasnt right for him
"They are not alive aunty."
"Koi nahi hai?" Amma asked in shock
"Sister hai Singapore mein Varsha" she said, "she umm... she" "She and I are not very close" Suvi finished
Amma looked on indifferently, as she wondered what in the WORLD Neel was even thinking
Ghar baar rishtedaar, bhara poora khandaan on both sides, Pant, Pandits and Misras...
tracing back ancestry to famous lekhaks and adhyapaks and vidwans in ved and purans, salahkaars, gunee vicharaks and darshaniks
"what in the world was I thinking?" Suvi thought as the feeling of being vetted sunk in
