PART 87
Ram's eyes blurred as he saw the van moving away. Tears brimmed up and his heart tore into a million pieces. His breathing dropped, nausea touched his brain.
Stones pierced through his Khaki Pants and blood flew out coldly. But Ram was insensitive to all those feelings. They were too meagre for him now. Surrounded by huge mountains, he felt scared for the first time. The odd silence of the river sounded deadly to him. Not a sound of a person around, and he only felt himself getting lost into the distant future. A white light shone in front of his eyes and his voice feebled down.
"Bhaiyya!" was all he heard as Lakshman ran towards him from the back. But he heard no sound of Urmila.
Lakshman caught hold of him as he felt back on the stones, blacking out. Lakshman saw Jaydev gasping for breath as he lay over sharp stones and to his horror, blood poured from all over his body and the knife in his stomach twisted and turned with his body movement.
Lakshman was in a bewildered state. He had no sense of what was going on, nor did he have Urmila with him, and Ram lay in his arms senseless.
"Wh..What the hell is happening ?! Siya Bhabi.. Kaka.. Bhaiyya!!!!!!"
His hands almost froze and his lips went dry. His heart beat faster. Chaos took over his mind too, but now he had to take care of Ram, firstly, bring Ram back to his senses.
Lakshman removed his jacket slowly and placed his head on it. He ran to the river and gathered some cold water in his hand. The water too had his tears.
He ran and splashed Rams face with the cold water. Ram slowly opened his eyes and looked around. They were deep red on the edges, and carried a lost expression, nothing like Lakshman had ever seen.
Ram sat up straight. He was at a loss of words. Rather, he was overwhelmed with words. He didnt know what to say first, and how to say it.
He noticed Jaydev lying on the ground, his breathing still understandable to the meagre-est of levels. He got up slowly and limped to Jaydev with Lakshman holding him by elbow.
They sat next to him, careful as to not touch him. Their hands trembled and tears fell out profusely. Such an old man had to bear such a suffering, it was unbearable.
Ram clasped one of hands lightly and said,
"Kaka, I am sorry. I am responsible for all this. If possible please forgive.. forgive Me.." His voice broke. Guilt erupted in him.
Jaydev struggled to catch his breath, his last few.
"Ram.. You are not responsible for anything.. I... I am. I couldnt save her.."
"Kaka," Ram sobbed, "Who took her?"
"Raghavan, at Vati.."
Ram could see him struggling to speak.
"Kaka, speak no more." he said as he tightened his grip on Jaydevs hand.
"God bless you Ra.."
Tears still fell from the edges of his still eyes as he breathed out his last, in Rams name. It was as if in obeisance that the nature sat still, waiting for his soul to pass into the heavenly abode.
It was scary for Lakshman. It was the first time he had come so close to death. Ram had memory of his grandparents' passing, but Lakshman didnt remember that too, owing to his young age. The whole feeling broke through him.
A man, a man he loved and made fun with, was there no more. And was killed.
Ram left his hand and hid his face in it.
He cried as loud as his heart could. His groan, yell and pain resounded through the whole valley.
His uncle had passed away, and he was rid of a gem of his life.
The thought of Siya struck him harder. She was taken away, right in front of his eyes, and he was helpless.
He had extended his hand to reach her, but she was too far to take it in hers. She called out to him, but he was too far to listen. Each and every moment of his helplessness and her shriek killed him to the depths. Her voice resounded again and again. Urmila, she too had been taken away, he comprehended. Ram understood what he had been made to fall into. A death trap, or rather death.
Lakshman glanced at his brothers white face. The two brothers sat opposite to each other, but none spoke a word. Somehow, both of them could understand was going through each other and broke themselves in separate ways.
Lakshman recalled the last time he say Siya, the condition she was in.
He came to a conclusion - It was all his fault.
He didnt listen to Ram, HE left Siya alone, and HE let Urmila go alone. He realised how alone the two of them were without their better halves. How much of a mental support they were.
Lakshman stood up, looking up at the glaring sun. He stared at the bright light and tears gleamed in the light.
He asked, looking up to the God whom he believed in,
"Why? Why god ? Why are you punishing me ? What have I done ? What is my fault ! You never let my family stay at peace God.. Never.. That is the only thing I ask from you God.. But you didnt listen to me.. You took my Urmila and Siya Bhabi away from me.. And Jaydev Kaka.."
Lakshmans tone changed to a harsher one,
"God, either bring them back to take me away right now from this earth. I dont want to live here anymore. Take me !!"
Lakshman looked down and turned to his right.
"SLAP!!!"
Right across Lakshmans face. Ram stood in front of him crying, with his right hand raised. His weak body still had power but his eyes conveyed a completely different expression. It was the first time he had to raise his hand on someone he loved more than himself.
Lakshman just looked up at him with a blank expression. He didnt even mind the slightest of the fact that Ram had hit him. In fact, he thought himself to be worthy of more.
"Bhaiyya, I deserve another.."
Ram broke into tears and hugged Lakshman tightly. He cried on his shoulder and said,
"Lakshman! How dare you think of leaving me and running away ? And that too forever ! Lakshman how heartless can you be ?! Will you leave me alone like this?"
Lakshman realised what his mistake had been. However, a second feeling of guilt emerged in him now. Of hurting his Ram Bhaiyya .
"Bhaiyya, I am sorry. And I am calling God because that is what is right Bhaiyya.. I have no right to live anymore."
Ram broke the hug and looked at him again.
"Lakshman, if there is someone doesn't need to be on the earth now is me . Its not you."
"Bhaiyya.."
"Lakshman," he said after a pause, "I think we should home once. What if Urmila is there ?"
Lakshman felt a hope rise in his eyes. He and Ram ran straight to their house.
Both the brothers stopped in front in front of the white door of the house. Its was open, and ravaged through. Packets of vegetables were placed at the doorstep. Their hopes of finding Urmila lowered, but didnt shatter.
Ram and Lakshman went in. Siya's phone, broken, lay on the ground. Their marks and scratches all over the sofa.
They walked into he house and Ram went up to check.
Lakshman walked into his room. He hoped she would pop up from somewhere.
"Urmila?" he inquired around softly, "Are you here?"
No answer.
"Urmila, please come out."
The same silence.
"Urmila, I know you are hiding somewhere here. I saw those packets outside. Urmila, something serious has happened. Its not funny."
Lakshman gulped.
"Urmila, Siya Didi has been taken away by Raghavan.."
That was it. Lakshman sat down on the bed. He knew, Urmila would never have stopped herself had she heard something like that, but that is if she had been there.
"Have you been taken too Urmila?" He cried and said.
For some reason, a feeble voice in his head said,
"yes."
Lakshman clinged on to the edge of the bed and sobbed. He looked at Urmila's picture on his bedside and bringing it close to his heart, cried endlessly.
"I am sorry Mila, Im sorry."
Upstairs, Ram stood frozen. His worst fear had turned out to be true. Urmila too had been taken away.
Ram didnt have a sister, but Urmila, she was like a sister to him. And he had been a failure as a brother.
Ram walked down slowly into Lakshmans room. He saw his brother sitting like a little kid with his most prized possession in his arms, except for the fact that he was crying.
He went and sat next to Lakshman. Lakshman slowly keeping Urmila's picture away and slowly sobbing said,
"Bhaiyya, I had a feeling since morning that something bad was about to happen. But none of you all understood me then. Only If I.."
"Lakshman, I am sorry. I should have listened to you." Ram couldn't talk anymore. His voice dried out.
Lakshman began,
"Bhaiyya, after I came back, I saw Siya Bhabi in despair. Apparently someone had called her and told something about you. She was so worried and horrified Bhaiyya. I told her to calm down and that this was just a plan, but she didnt listen. To be honest, If I were in her situation even I wouldn't have been able to remain quiet. I was staying with her but she pushed me out. I even told her not to open the door to anyone and locked the grill from outside. But that Raghavan ..."
The two men sat in a silence, going through all that just happened. Imagining the plight of the two women was too hurting to them.
"You know what Lakshman," said Ram, "It is all my fault."
"No Bhaiyya Its.."
"It is. I am the one who brought Siya and Urmila to our lives in the first place. From a say after our marriage, I never was able to keep her happy, to be true. When she was being followed by Raghavan at Manali, I didnt have a clue and couldn't give her peace. It was I who brought all of us here and made them live a life like this. Its all me. And now, it was I who had an enmity with Raghavan. But she suffered."
"Bhaiyya, if you think it that way, then I am a greater culprit. I got into trouble so many times and I ever let anyone of you sleep in peace for a single night. And it is I who never listened to any one you and .."
The two felt incompetent and lost, the worst feeling a person can ever have.
"How will I show my face to Janak Uncle now, Lakshman?" asked Ram. "How will I ever apologise to him for what I have done to Siya and the others?"
"Bhaiyya, why are you taking the entire responsibility on yours shoulders? I understand that you are hurt but .."
"Lakshman, I am the eldest. I am the one who holds this responsibility for everyone. And to be true, we would have never been SENT here in the first place if I was present."
Lakshman sighed. He wiped his tears and said,
" Bhaiyya, from you I have learnt one thing that no matter what comes in life, you always will have to fight through it. We down know where Urmila and Siya Bhabi are Bhaiyya, but for all I know, nothing will happen to them as long as we are here."
"Lakshman, I know I am realistic in nature, but .. I had promised Siya that I shall forever keep her safe and secured. I can't believe that Raghavan, that rascal!!! How dare he even touch Siya and Urmila !"
Lakshman fumed, but another thought brought him down.
"Bhaiyya, we need to perform the rites for Jaydev Kaka also now.. The man was so nice, there was nothing he did to deserve such a death."
Ram nodded and the two walked to the same spot where he lay . Some people and a few policemen and gathered there by then.
The police knew Ram and his family very well, and hearing all that had happened since morning, the chief said,
"Sir, why didnt you inform us ?! We could have done something ! I know we are nothing in front of Raghavan but.. Im sure we could have atleast stopped him."
Ram sighed.
"Im sorry, everything happened so quickly and I was so horrified... "
All of them stood silent.
A few people from a nearby hospital arrived and took Jaydev's body away. The crowd gathered too went away, and the police Chief, Ram and Lakshman stood looking at the blood stains.
Ram looked into the distance where he had seen Siya for the last time. He tried to look past but, it was empty.
"I have lost everything now. Whatever I had left of me, I lost it." he said.
"Bhaiyya," said Lakshman, "Bhabi doesn't think so."
"What do you mean Lakshman?"
"Siya Bhabi will never distrust you and her faith on you is greater than her faith in God...She will be waiting for you Bhaiyya..We will find her."
"But what about Urmila, Lakshman? "
"Sir," the police officer interjected, "I am sure, if Raghavan has taken Mrs. Siya, he must have kidnapped Mrs. Urmila too.. They both are together. "
The statement brought in a little bit of confidence in Ram and Lakshman.
"But Sir," said Ram, " In his last breath, Jaydev kaka was taking about some Vati Or Vaki thing.."
The police officer was taken aback with surprise.
"Vatika?" he asked.
"I dont know," Ram said, "All I know is that he was about to say something beginning with Vati "
"You two need to come with me." said the Officer and took both of them in his car to the police station.
Once there, Ram and Lakshman were made to sit opposite to the officer at a computer table.
"Did you get any trace of them?" asked Lakshman.
"No," the officer said, "But I think I know where they might be."
Ram and Lakshman moved ahead with anxiousness.
The officer hit a few buttons and brought out a map. He pointed to the map , in a place near the south of the Indian Ocean and said,
"See. This is an archipelago of islands in the Indian Ocean. One of these islands is owned by Raghavan. And its name is Vatika."
"What?!" said Ram and Lakshman together.
"Yes. He has captured this uninhabited island and made it his own. As far as we guess, all his illegal imports take place from here."
"So can't we just leave for that island right now?!" asked Ram.
"Sir," said the officer calmly, "It is not so easy. First, we will have to hire a non government ship to go out of the boundary of India and into no mans territory. We live in Manali, and a ship can only be obtained from a coast in Karnataka. From there, we need to go east, a voyage of atleast a month to the place. But that is not all.. His island is heard to be located in a very dangerous territory where no planes or vehicle other than a ship can arrive and the currents their are disastrous."
"Please, I just want to know how long it will take to reach there.." said Lakshman.
"Around 2 months will all procedures if done in time. "
Ram and Lakshman looked at each other. They had no time to waste now.
"But the point is, how did Jaydev Kaka know they will be taken there?" asked Lakshman to the officer.
"Sir, Kaka has known this place from his birth. He knows raghavan and his actions. Raghavan and his sister will need to flee from India anyhow now, and it is a cent percent possible that they are there."
There was a moment of silence.
"Thank you so much Officer. Your help is so precious to me." said Ram.
"Sir, what you have done to protect us is no less. It is only my blessing to help people like you. And I shall be with you till be dont find Mrs. Siya."
"Thank you."
Ram and Lakshman walked out. Standing on the edge of a cliff, Ram yelled into the open ,
"SIYA! URMILA! WHEREVER YOU TWO ARE I WILL FIND YOU AND BRING YOU BACK WITHOUT A SCAR. AND RAGHAVAN ! I WILL PUNISH YOU WITH MY BARE HANDS!"
Tears brimmed as he yelled, but these were the tears of determination and power. Lakshman placed his shoulder on Rams hand and yelled,
"AND I WILL NEVER LAEVE YOUR SIDE ! I WILL PUNISH HIM AND THEN SLEEP!"
The brothers boiled with anger and strength.
"Bhaiyya, we need to show the world what is right and what is wrong now."
"yes Lakshman. And let us begin from now itself."
"Sir?"
They turned around only to face the officer again. He handed them two pouches.
"keep these." he said.
Ram looked inside. They were weapons used by the police department and his license. However, Ram could understand that the officer had given them these from the police department without their permission, something that was against the law.
"But, why are you risking your job for us Sir? You know you can.."
" I know I can lose my job for this, but trust me, I will be much happier to help you in my own way. You will need these, day in and day out. "
The also handed them a small sheet of paper and kept long paper to himself .
"Ram Sir, that is the contact of one of the non government ship companies in Karnataka we have conducted a few missions with. The owners name is Sujit, he is a nice man and he will help you for sure."
Ram moved ahead and hugged the officer.
"Friend, you dont know how much you have helped me. You are my saviour. "
"No, friend, I am just a mate like you said."
The officer felt something uneasy in himself. He seemed to know Ram, somehow.
They broke the hug and as Ram and lakshman were turning away, he asked,
"Sir! Can I ask you a personal question?"
Ram stopped and turned with Lakshman.
"yes, sure." He was confused.
The officer stepped forward and kept his cap on a bench.
"Sir, all this while I've known you to be only Mr. Ram. I dont know your surname. Would you mind telling me? I mean, I seem to know you somehow. "
"Why is that so?" Ram asked.
"Dont get me wrong but, I think I have some kind of a connection with you."
Ram gulped. He didnt want to reveal who he really was no matter how good the person was.
"Sharma. Sharma is my surname."
The officer nodded.
"Oh, I am sorry. You are not the one person I was thinking about. Sorry,"
"Its okay. By the way, I hope you remain safe here Officer. "
"I will. You should proceed now. Any help from my side if needed is always there."
Ram and Lakshman set off. They reached home and packed a few things, along with their wives things.
Ram booked two train tickets from Kullu to Karnataka with the fake name he had been using all the while.
"Lakshman, be careful, no one should know who we are."
"Yes Bhaiyya, we'll go dressed in a different form."
They put on fake beards they had with them all the while, owing to the perks of being in a secret identity from 2.5 years and changed into local dresses. They carried only the fake IDs given to them by Jaydev and set off.
"Here we come, Raghavan," said they together.
