Chapter 2

With his hands joined together, index fingers ticking against each other and his toes softly thumping the ground, Reyansh glanced softly at everyone who were sitting around him in the Reception Battalion. Everyone seemed focused, they all were well built, confident, tough looking people around him.

Not that Rey wasn't confident or wasn't physically fit! Basketball captain his whole high school career and even the winner of the title of Student of the year in senior year!! Confidence was his second name.

But there was something he felt deep within his heart that he couldn't explain. It was that same uneasiness he felt each time during his basketball matches, when he would dribble the ball as he ran towards the basket, the feeling whether he wasn't sure he could get through it or not, the nervousness yet his mind doing all the calculation and alas!! Each time he would get

this feeling he knew he would score! As he always did!

Trying to calm down his pacing heart, He shut his eyes as he recalled the moment he informed his mother about his decision of joining the army! He will never forget the way she looked at him. That blank, lost look. He won't forgot how his heart felt when instead of supporting or congratulating him, the only question she asked him was,

"Do I know you?"

He was hoping that day would be that special day where his mother would remember him. It would be that day she wasn't an Alzheimer's patient. He wished it was the day she would look at him and smile, hug him as she always would do before his Dad all of a sudden passed away. His life turned upside down ever since. First take care of his depressed mother until a day she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Deep within he felt he had no reason to stay back, but he remained glued to his positive attitude, He wouldn't give up. He would try to be happy. He would try to make other's smile. Although sometimes he would feel He didn't have a normal life, but he would somehow find a new reason to live. Until one day, he finally made up his mind and informed his uncle Gautam that he will join the Army.

Gautam always wondered what made his nephew make this decision?? Was it the pride, was it the respect and honor or was it simply that he was inspired by someone?

He'll never know.

Leaving a deep breath out, Rey sat up straight and smiled at the guy sitting to the left of him, who few minutes ago had introduced himself as Nilesh aka Nil. He told Rey that he felt glad he wasn't the only Asian immigrant boy in this batch and they would both make a great team.

"I can get through this...I can...Yes I can..." Whispered a gorgeous looking female with a perfectly toned dusky body, who tied her hair in a neat bun, looking as professional as possible but was impatiently and nervously sitting towards the right of Reyansh.

Nil and Rey both glanced at her as she smiled and introduced herself softly,

"Simarleen Kaur Singh, but you can call me Simi"

Nilesh giggled as he spoke up in a mocking tone, "Simarleen Kaur Singh? How did you get in with such a long name?"

Rey raised his eyebrows as he turned and looked at Simi who gave Nil a sarcastic smile as she spoke up,

"The same way as you got in with a tiny height"

"Ouch"

Whispered Rey as he controlled his laughter while Nil and Simi just glared into each other's eyes. Before things could get worse, Rey cleared his throat as he spoke up,

"Guys! We are here to fight against the enemies of our country and not against each other! Remember?"

Simi and Nil let out a frustrated breath as they glanced at Rey, who was sandwiched between two angry recruits who weren't acting as recruits at the moment.

Within a minute the main door of reception battalion opened up and the other half of the batch marched in union. The whole unit was full of young recruits from different parts of US. They all were wearing the same uniform as Reyansh and the rest batch. All guys with the same military haircut, all females wearing the same off white T-shirt with the word ARMY printed loud and clear in bold letters.

They all stood up in a que as they were requested to do so. Everyone seemed enthusiastic and full of energy. No one knew who will make it till the end, who will drop out in between. All they knew was that they wanted to serve their country.

Taani glanced at everyone in the room as she walked in and stood in the que. Everyone stood straight, their posture upright, no hunch. Taani gulped as she put a serious expression and stared at the gentleman who stood infront of these 50 new recruits from all over US.

"ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to Army Training Camp, I am Major Kenneth, your drill sergeant. Before you'll start your journey, which let me remind you once again won't be easy, You have to know the few very important things you have to keep in mind throughout the Boot camp"

He walked towards his left, with a posture and arrogance as he watched each one of them.

"Expect immediate and difficult changes- partly physical and partly mental, For example, None of your food will taste like it did at home. Also be prepared to swim 50 yards"

He paused for a second and then continued,

"with your hands behind your back."

Rey licked his lip as he tried to glance at anyone who looked familiar among this lot. But the silence in the room and drill sergeant presence made him nervous as he was scared to tilt his head even an inch.

"Moving on to the Golden rule of our boot camp. Never complain"

Taani let out a soft breath as she felt her heart beat faster.

"When training for your goal, don't grumble, whine or find fault. Enduring the difficulties will produce strength, and trust me you will need that in days ahead."

Everyone had a slight grin on their faces as they heard this, But soon was replaced by a stern face as they heard the next instruction.

"Never fight with the man who trains you".

His voice was firm, his words were sharp. He made sure it would ring in the recruits ears throughout the training. It was as if he was warning them. Telling them he was the last person they would want to mess with. By the look of him no one would dare mess with him either. He had a huge masculine body. He was perfectly in shape and had tight muscles. He didn't have a merciful look. He looked angry and stubborn.

"boot camp will be tough, for sure, you'll have a lot of running, a lot of exercise, and a lot of work. We will start by tearing you down and will make you feel like nothing. But then we will build you back up"

He ended on that note and the recruits were asked to introduce themselves one by one and leave.

He started off from behind leaving Taani among the last ones to introduce her name and Rey who was behind was preparing himself as he would be speaking up soon. Taani wasn't paying attention; she was busy recalling the rules so that she wouldn't ever forget them even once. She wanted to be the strongest among them all. She wanted to be the toughest.

As she tried to recall the rules, her thoughts were distracted by a voice.

"Reyansh Singhania, Seattle"

Her expressions and heart dropped, she was listening to this voice after a decade. A voice that once used to bring a glow on her face. A name she thought she would never hear again. A place she moved away from leaving a lot of people behind. Burring all her feelings behind.

All her toughness vanished within a second. All she felt right now was guilt. Guilt of breaking a heart. Guilt of not turning back, guilt of moving on.

With a heavy heart Taani turned and glanced at Rey. Just to make sure that she was right! She knew she could forget the whole world but not that voice! And there he was, standing behind a few recruits in his Boot camp outfit, looking tough as possible, his hair all shaved off and smile wiped away. And All of a sudden the atmosphere felt different.

What's he doing here?

Everything began moving in slow motion for Taani as Reyansh walked with his hands behind his back, head slightly bent and expression clearly serious. She watched his back as he walked out of the room. A feeling of nervousness piled up Taani's heart, mind and soul as she remembered walking out of his life without any reason, without any explanation.

How am I gonna face him now!
