Part 10:
Dinner buffet was opened and people started filling their plates and eating at the circular tables that had been laid out. Anjali, Dadi and Aakash were sitting together when a familiar face joined them.
"Namaste Auntyji, how are you?" Anajli asked and though Aakash didn't remember her he followed suit and asked them, as his sister was nudging him under the table.
The lady smiled and replied "I am fine beta, how are you two?" settling down at their table with her companion.
"Namaste Maaji, how are you? I am to Delhi especially for this engagement but I wanted to visit you before I left, I have to talk to you about something important." The lady said addressing Naniji now, while holding Nani's hand in hers.
"Namaste Nalini bitiya, I am fine. You know you can come any time to our house. It will be nice to catch up on things with you." Nani said giving her hand a little squeeze.
"Maaji, this is Mrs.Singhania, her husband is also a well known businessman in Delhi just like Arnav bitua, I am staying at her house from tonight till I leave tomorrow evening to Lucknow." Nalini introduced her companion, a fine looking lady in a light blue silk saree.
Aakash had guessed by now, why he couldn't recognize her, she must be one of their old acquaintances from Lucknow. After that Aakash didn't listen to much of what was being said as he became busy trying to find Payal among the guests. "Payal" such a lovely name, if only he could know more about her. Just as Aakash thought that,
"KHUSHI BITIYA!!" he heard someone from his table call out loudly, it was Mrs.Singhania.
"KHUSHI BITIYA!!" she called again
Aakash immediately looked in the direction Mrs.Singhania was looking and he saw a flash of fast moving red color come to a dead halt and look tentatively around her.
"KHUSHI BITIYA, here," Mrs.Singhania was waving her hand.
Khushi spotted them and moved towards the table with a huge smile on her face. When she reached there she bent and hugged Mrs.Singhania really tight,
"Shobha aunty, I haven't seen you for months, how are you? How is uncle? Is he here?"
Shobha smiled fondly at the girls greeting and hugged her back with love and patted her head.
"We were out of town bitiya, your uncle's business expansion, we got back last week, will visit tomorrow. Your uncle can't wait to eat your jelabi's. How are Shashiji and Garima?"
"Everyone is fine, aunty, I will have a fresh batch ready tomorrow morning."
Shobha turned to the others at the table and said "This is Dr.Khushi, her dad and my husband has been friends for the longest time."
Khushi said her Namastes to everyone and gave an extra big smile to Nani. Nani said "I have met her already." And then went on to explain what had happened to the others.
Anjali got up and gave a warm hug to Khushi and said a teary thank you. Khushi explained that it was nothing major at all.
"That's how our Khushi is, she is the best at everything she does, studies, job, cooking, being naughty, dancing...Khushi, you said you were arranging a charity show on behalf of some organization to fund modern medical equipment, did it go well?" she asked frowning to remember their last conversation from few months ago.
"Aunty that's why I love you so much, you never forget anything important, the show is this Saturday evening, are you free aunty?" counter enquired Khushi
"I will make myself free Khushi, get me two tickets," Khushi jumped with joy surprising her new friends but Shobha didn't react much she was used to Khushi's antics.
"I have them right here!!" she said with happiness filled in her voice, opening her clutch and pulling out a book that looked like a check book. Pulled out two tickets and handed them to Shobha aunty and said "Aunty I will collect the money later, no need for it now."
Nani was not going to let this opportunity to meet this wonderful girl again go through her fingers, she spoke up "Bitiya, I would also like to attend this show, I am sure you have done a great job arranging everything."
"Yes, yes I would like to come too," Anjali joined in.
Khushi looked very uncomfortable, she didn't want them to buy the tickets to please her and this was not the place to sell tickets by explaining about what will happen to their money and all. She looked at Shobha aunty for help.
Shobha aunty smiled knowingly and said "Khushi, you are not doing business, it's for charity you should not feel bad about being aggressive for a charity, if your uncle had known about this earlier, he would have forced all his staff to buy out the show. You know how much he loves to see you dance."
"Khushi bitiya will dance? Now I will not leave without tickets bitiya." Nani said
Khushi obliged and pulled out two tickets, Aakash was about to say that he would join too, when
"Khushiji, if you are dancing I am sure all our family would love to come and watch. Please give us 6 tickets." Anjali said counting out her husband as he will be out of town and determinedly counting her brother in. She had a plan to blackmail him to attend the show. She had a good feeling about this, she wanted strengthen their relations with this girl, what better way to achieve it but by having her whole family for backup.
*************************
Why does he have to attend this, just send this doctor girl some gift and that should be the end of it, thought ASR frustatedly tying the tie around his neck, pulling it a little too hard and almost chocking himself. Di had made proper use of her blackmailing skill on him with words like "don't you want to thank her for saving our nani!!", "don't you understand what she has done for the family?" etc etc. untill he gave in to attend some charity show, he even offered to write a big check in exchange for being left alone, but his Di cleverly miss understood him and took the check and also made him part of the party that was going to attend the stupid show.
It was too late to thrown anymore tantrums now, he pulled out his iphone and checked to see if the charge was 100%, he was going to do work or play angry birds. He was sure nothing will interest him in a cheap charity show.
Boy was he wrong; his life was going to change tonight, for better or for worse... only time will tell...
They traveled to the venue in two cars; Aakash, mama, mami in one car; Arnav, Anjali and Nani in the other. The boys were driving themselves, they had asked the drivers to leave as it was a Saturday evening. When they reached the venue, they stopped at the entrance so that the ladies and mamaji could get down and drove around the place to park the cars.
When Arnav had parked his car and got down to head towards the venue, he noted that a lot of the other cars were of the expensive kind. So this girl knew where she should invest her time to get the returns she wanted he thought. Unknowingly his brain had started filing a case of mistrust against this Doctor girl, without even meeting her, without even knowing her name properly.
All his businessman brain gathered was she helped his Nani and then sold tickets to the same family, which shows she knows how to use circumstances for her gain. His brain conveniently missed that fact that the tickets sold were for charity and she gains nothing from it at all. It also forgot to clarify his ASSUMPTIONS with the people who were there when it actually happened.
At the entrance he was directed to a hall for meet and greet, before the actual show started and some soft drinks were being served, actually there was no one serving them, the drinks were neatly stacked in an ice pack and people would go and grab one. A huge sign on the wall said "Thank you for serving yourself." "How cheap." he thought.
He looked at his watch there were 10 more minutes for the show to begin. He looked around the room. He recognized quite a number of people in the room, he just kept on looking till he found his family, ASR just didn't do small talk. He saw his mama and mami deep in conversation with another couple. He started moving towards them, he saw the other couple say their parting namastes to mama and mami and move away.
He heard his mami say with a sigh "I have no such luck with my son... I hope at least this works out." then she said to mama in a threatening manner "There is no need for you to go and tell everybody about this till everything is finalized, I don't want it jinxed."
"What are you saying Manorama, jinxing stuff by talking about it?? Which century are you living in?" his cool headed mama asked.
Then the two realized that Arnav was coming towards them and he was close enough to overhear their conversation. Mami nudge his uncle in the ribs and said "Remember what I said."
Then she turned to Arnav who had reached them by now and stopped. "Arre bitua, you are here, we are waiting for you and Aakash to come before we went inside. We were just talking to old friends in the mean time." She explained
ASR gave a nod to acknowledge her words and turned towards the door to see if Aakash had made it yet. He didn't give a damn about mamiji's little secrets; he had far better things on his mind just then Aakash walked in with his camera equipment stunning all three of them.
Aakash never liked clicking gatherings of people, he preferred nature, and he only took pictures of their family that too on normal days when they were going about the house doing their daily activities. He never even took pictures of any events held at their home, he would wait for all the guests to leave and then click the family's pictures when they sat down relaxing and talking about the party. Arnav knew how much Aakash hated clicking the models at AR Fashions. Hate or not his brother was a genius with the camera and ASR respected his skill.
But right now ASR was shocked to see Aakash with what he knew to be Aakash's most favored camera hanging around his neck and a goofy grin on his face, looking for something around the room. He spotted his family and moved towards them, but ASR noticed his eyes kept searching for something. ASR frowned and thought, "what is going on?"
When mami voiced her thoughts Aakash shrugged it off and said "Just like that, Maa." And then turned to Arnav and said "Bhai, shall we go inside?" ASR nodded and started to walk out of the meet and greet room to the actual event place, when loud booming laughter caught their attention. Immediately ASR was on high alert, he knew that laugh. He looked around the room and spotted the source of the laugh and smiled to himself "ASR is never wrong."
He told his family to go on inside, after taking his ticket from them and said that he will join them in a bit and then moved towards Mr.Singhania.
There were few ethical people left in this business world and Mr.Singhania was one of them. ASR admired the man, it also helped that Mr.Singhania had guided ASR when he was new and just making himself a part of the business world. ASR being ASR had taken off from there and flown high, but he never forgot his roots. He would forever be obliged to Mr.Singhania. He reached Mr.Singhania and said
"Hello sir, how are you? When did you get back in town?"
"Arnav, my boy!! Great to see you." said the jovial man and took ASR into a side hug and ASR obliged. This exchange had all the people who knew ASR to drop their jaws and stare. No one touched ASR, at least not without ASR being the person to initiate it. Arnav noticed this and looked some of them in their eye, conveying the message that this was a privilege for only this older man and no one else.
Mr.Singhania was oblivious to all this had started introducing ASR to the people around him, "This is Arnav Singh Raizada, he is into multiple business ventures, you must have heard about him. He is a great kid." he finished. "KID" did Mr.Singhania just call the ASR a kid, more like a giant in the world of business they thought, but smiled politely to acknowledge the introduction.
An elderly man came near the party and addressed Mr.Singhania "Gaurav, let's go in, it's about to start." Mr.Singhania nodded happily and turned to Arnav and said, "We will catch up later my boy, now let's go see my butterfly dance." Arnav just nodded and moved forward with all of them, he had no idea what the older man meant by a butterfly dancing, he knew better than to ask.
Arnav settled in his seat it was neither the first row nor the last, but he was at almost eye level with the dais. The curtains were drawn, he pulled out his IPhone and got to work, ignoring the annoyed glances of his family.
*******************************
Aakash pulled out his camera and moved to join the two other photographer's near the stage and got ready. The room fell into silence as Payal came on stage looking beautiful; Aakash was mesmerized by her beauty all over again. When she started speaking into the microphone Aakash was jolted out of his drooling session and got to work to capture the beauty of his beauty in his camera for eternity.
Payal went on to thank the major contributors to the charity and all the people who had worked hard to make the event possible. She went on to explain what exactly the money they donated would achieve, thanked all the people who contributed big or small to make a difference in this world. She said they had an entertaining event planned for the audience and asked them to sit back and enjoy the ride, which was starting with a Bharatanatyam performance by Doctors Raja and Radha.
And so it began...
Part 12:
Arnav was ready to leave.
He had glanced at the things happening on stage now and then. Some he had found creative and watched them a little more till he lost interest and got back to his phone. Some he went through without even glancing up. But one of the performances till now, which held his attention a little was that of a girl dancing to a medley of old remixed Bollywood songs, it caught his attention when mamaji who was sitting beside him was relentlessly poked in his ribs by mami to watch the show with enthusiasm. He looked to the stage to see what all the fuss was about.
He saw a well structured girl with dusky complexion and twinkling eyes dancing with gusto to the songs being played. He watched it for a couple of more seconds and thought " hmmm, she could have been a good model, if she wanted." and went back to work.
He knew the last program was being announced and he couldn't wait for it to get over. Just then he saw his phone's screen blaze up with life, he saw the caller id, it said "AMAN". Aman never called unless it was necessary, he got up to leave and the music started flowing in as the curtains were drawn open. He didn't know why but he wanted to ignore Aman's call and just stay. He turned to the stage completely forgetting that he was inconveniencing the people behind him and stared at the stage.
They were a lot of dancers on stage. Unlike the traditional way of placing the dancers evenly on stage, 6 girls with similar dresses colored in pink and blue were on one side of the stage where as just one girl was on one side of the stage in a completely blue dress. The girl in blue had her face covered till her nose like a ghunghat.
The dancers were all seated and doing different gestures with their hands indicating that they were engrossed in different activities. Then the music of a flute joined the already soothing music that was playing in the background and immediately all the girls of stage went on alert and looked around searching for some one.
Then Arnav realized it must be about Krishna and Gopikas. The 6 gopis on one side of the stage were already up on their feet and moving around in synch and enacting an intense search for the elusive God; whereas the girl on the other side was still seated and looking around.
The Gopi's:
Just as suddenly as it had started the music of the flute stopped and this bought gloom on stage as all the girls showed their grief. But Arnav's eyes were fixed on the girl in blue she held her heart with both hands and stilled.
Then the song started and the girls that were standing were only doing leg moments and facial expressions with their hands held behind them. The blue girl was the only one who was doing the hand moments.
Arnav understood the meaning of the song from her gestures, she was asking him to come back to her just one more time, to fill her world with joy just one more time, to let her hear his voice just one more time and to hold her in his arms just one more time... just one more time...
Then she slowly started lifting her ghunghat to reveal her face and begged the lord to smile at her looking into her eyes... her eyes... Arnav wanted to look into her eyes, RIGHT NOW, he was irritated that he couldn't get closer to her to look into them. It was not like she was begging the lord to look into her eyes but more like she was commanding Arnav to look into her eyes.
He could make out that she had beautiful doe like eyes enhanced by the stage makeup. He could see she had a slender nose, like a waterfall. He could see her luscious lips that were pouting to show the lord her unhappiness at not being with her. He could see her cute little chin that was adding more beauty to her already wonderful features. He noticed her skin had a glow like no other he had seen before, he knew no amount or no variety of makeup could do that, it was natural.
He wanted to see more, he wanted to see the color of her eyes, he wanted to see a smile on her lips, he wanted to see her skin turn pink with a blush.
He snapped out of his thoughts as the music picked up pace and she stood up with a twirl, and the move was so smooth so graceful that it looked effortless. But he understood how difficult it would have been, probably another reason the other gopis didn't do the same movement to stand up.
When she stood up her ghunghat completely fell off her head and shoulders and settled around her into its place on her back. The singing had come to a pause and now there was a little fast rhythmic music playing and the gopis were dancing to the rhythm. She would dance and the gopis would follow suit with simpler steps. Then singing had begun again but this time even the tempo of the song was fast unlike the beginning.
She moved with rhythm not missing a beat. She moved with grace making every move look beautiful. She expressed with her whole body making you feel the pain she was going through at being separated from her soul mate. She twirled and moved on stage like mercury on the floor, or like water on a lotus leaf, she was neither on the ground nor was she suspended in air. She pined for her lover with such reverence that her grief was radiating in the hall.
A twirling Khushi:
Then she started twirling as the Aalapana and the music reached its peak. Her lehenga flared gracefully around her and she looked like a beautiful blue spinning top. Then she collapsed on stage at the end of her twirling overcome with grief. The music came to a dead stop, just the singing was there in a slow painful voice and she looked around one more time for her lord and closed her eyes in pain.
Arnav had this insane urge to get to her and hold her close, tell her that he is there and he didn't know what would have happened if the music of the flute hadn't started at that moment and Krishna had come on stage. And now happy music played and the 6 other gopis danced around Khanayya, but the lord obliged them for a split second before he proceeded to the girl in blue.
Then it hit Arnav, the girl in blue, she was Radha, there might be a million Gopis but she was the one for whom the lord would turn the world upside down. Krishna sat beside her and gathered her close and she looked at him with a smile on her face, caressed his face with her palm and when he smiled at her she turned and hid her shy face in his shoulder and the curtain fell...
There was pin drop silence in the audience, before someone's clap broke the trance and thunderous applause followed.
ASR was brought back to earth with the applause. Only then did he realize that he was sitting in his seat... but he didn't remember sitting down, the last he remembered was turning towards the stage standing up. And he was about to go do something, what was it?... ooh ya answer Aman's call. He looked at his phone, he had 2 more missed calls from Aman, "S***! How did he miss them? It must be really important Aman, never calls so many times.
He was about to get up and go when the curtain lifted again and all the people who had performed started coming on stage and the audience stood up and applauded for their efforts. Arnav was stuck again, he wouldn't be able to make it out of his aisle without causing a nuisance to others. So he gave in again and turned to face the stage one more time.
He knew he was avoiding analyzing the surreal experience he had a few minutes back. When his brain said "ASR what was that?"... he replied "It must be the glucose level."
Then she walked on to the stage with her group and his eyes were glued to her... Aman and his phone call forgotten again.
