Chapter 9
Sharon walked out of her door and saw a black Volvo standing in her front porch. The windows were rolled down and inside was sitting her best friend, Reyaansh Singhania, wearing shades. Sharon strode forward and leaned on the car window. Rey turned to her and moving his shades a little down with his index finger, he winked at her.
"I didn't know that my chauffeur has changed as well in the past three years." Sharon smiled. "So what is my chauffeur's salary?"
"Um... it's one thousand dollars and a cup of cappuccino per ride." Rey said.
Sharon raised her eyebrows to which Rey responded, "Just get in the car silly."
Sharon jumped in the car happily. "So what made you come today?"
Rey turned to her with a mock indignation, "I want to spend time with my best friend and this is how I'm treated?"
Sharon shook her head. "I thought you have a girlfriend now, so..."
"Girlfriend can wait for the time being..." He muttered and after a pause said, "Don't tell Kriya I said this." Sharon laughed out and Rey, grinning, turned the keys making the car jerk to life, and zoomed out of her porch.

"So, I am completely fine now, physically and except my asthma problem, I can dance. It will take some time to get over this but if I did it once I can do it again." Sharon summarized monotonously, completely bored. "Rey, you have told this to me at least a dozen times."
Rey and Sharon were walking towards the academy, having just visited the hospital with one last checkup before being handed the fitness certificate.
"Sharon, I am just checking."
Rey stopped walking when he realized Sharon was a few steps behind him. "Come on. Let's go."
Sharon rushed forward to hug him. He uncertainly hugged her back. Suddenly he realized his shirt was getting wet, it struck him Sharon was crying.
"Sharon? What's wrong, why are you crying?" Rey tried to push her in order to see her face, but she clung to him, not letting go. She only tightened her grip.
"Thank you." She said, crying.
Rey finally managed to push her back and holding her by her shoulders, he asked, confused, "For what? What happened Sharon?"
"Thank you for being there for me. For supporting my parents when they needed it. Thank you for everything."
"Sharon, stop it. You would do the same thing for me. I'm sure of that." He said, hugging her again, his one hand on her back, the other patting the back of her head.
They stood there, hugging each other for some time before Sharon broke open, saying, "Okay enough tears for one day," brushing her tears away. Then looking up she said, "Let's go."
Rey did not move. He kept looking at her concerned. "Sharon, are you okay?"
"Of course, Rey. Now let's go." She said, her voice a bit more steady now.
Rey smiled. "Okay."

It was almost eight in the evening when the classes ended and the students dispersed. In another half an hour the entire team packed their bags to leave. Kria came running in the hall looking very excited.
"Guys, let's have a party today." She announced.
Everyone hooted and applauded to the idea.
"Any specific reason? I mean you look exceptionally happy." Swayam asked.
"Swayam, as of now, we have many many reasons to celebrate. For starters, Sharon's back. And there's another news. I'll say it once we have a party." Kria replied.
"Okay, then. A party it is. And as usual, at Swayam's place." Rey announced. It was again received by joyous applause. But Swayam said, "Rey, why don't we have the party at your place instead."
Rey frowned, "Why is there a problem?"
Swayam briefly glanced at Sharon and turning his gaze seemed to find the ground very interesting.
Rey looked at Sharon, then Swayam, and turning to Sharon, asked, "Sharon, do you have any problem."
Sharon looked away, embarrassed. Sure she had a problem. She was supposed to go to the home of the person whom she used to insult once and then who became her boyfriend and whom she has forgotten now. Wasn't that enough reason to have problem?
"Why would I have any problem?" She muttered.
"Great." Rey said, "So Swayam's place it is."

A yellow black taxi entered the parking area and Sharon was astounded by the place she saw. She had never expected Swayam's house to be so posh, given Swayam's choice for friends, a mechanic and a waiter.
Sharon grudgingly entered Swayam's house with Vicky, Nilesh, Simi and Rinni. The others had not yet arrived. As soon as they stepped inside, Vicky and Nil ran off to one side of the hall where Sharon saw both of them fighting for the controls of some stupid video game. Simi walked over to them trying to resolve their fight, muttering, "It seems I have turned nanny to two five year olds."
Rinni joined her as well so Sharon not wanting to get into their stupid bickering, looked around the house. Swayam lived in a two bedroom flat, with a spacious hall. Watching all the artifacts, she got to the conclusion that whoever had done the interior design had a very classy taste. She noticed one of his bedrooms was locked whereas the other one had the door hanging ajar. Sharon felt a pull towards that room, as though it held something in there she had a special place for, in her heart. The entire house felt like she had been there before, like it was a part of her life. Somehow the place felt comfortable, even homely.
She took a step towards the room and stopped when she saw Swayam coming out of the room. So that was Swayam's room. Somehow, she felt she already knew it.
Swayam saw her and stopped as well. After a long pause, he shyly smiled at her. Sharon looked down and then clearing her throat, said, "Nice house."
Swayam nodded. "Thanks."
Sharon looked up. "Who did the interior designing? I mean, it's quite good."
"That... er... my mom got an interior decorator when I first shifted here."
Sharon nodded knowingly. "I kind of guessed that." Sharon recognized the sound of wind-chime somewhere in the middle of all the ruckus her friends were making. She looked around, searching for it and found it, hanging by the window frame. She felt something, as though there was something she was missing. The little metal object looked very familiar to her.
Swayam's eyes followed Sharon's eyes and he saw the object that held her attention. With a smile, he remembered its history.
Swayam leaned on the wall watching Sharon fix the wind chime on the window frame. He saw the light breeze flowing through her hair. He saw her hair gently brushing against the nape of her neck. He captured the lock and twirled it around his fingers. Sharon turned to him with the most dazzling smile, and jubilantly said, "Done."
But Swayam was not the least bit interested in the wind chime. He moved forward and encircled his arms around her waist. "Do you like this?" Sharon asked, still occupied with the little thing. "Hmmm...," was his brilliant answer. Frankly Swayam found it extremely annoying. It kept tinkling with the slightest of breeze. It's fine initially but after half an hour or so, it really did not remain half as amusing.
"I love you." He mumbled in her ears.
Sharon turned in his arms and locking her arms on his neck, said, "I know that. But what about the wind chime?"
"I love everything you want me to love."
"You are just so cheesy, Swayam." Sharon laughed, rolling her eyes.
"I believe you like the taste of cheese, right?" he smiled before sweeping down to kiss her.
Swayam broke out of his reverie when he saw Sharon walk over to the window and taking the wind chime in her hands she began inspecting it. He walked over to her and leaned on the adjacent wall. She looked at him and turning back to the wind chime continued examining it. Swayam saw the light air making her hair flow around her and he had a sudden urge to kiss her. He slightly moved forward when the doorbell rang.
Swayam looked over his shoulder and sure enough, his friends were still in a squabble completely oblivious to the bell ringing. He reluctantly trudged to the door, opening it to allow the rest of them to enter. They entered and immediately Kria walked over to Sharon. Kria greeted her and Sharon replied with a smile. Kria went forward to hug her but Sharon took a step back. Kria awkwardly let her hands fall down, and after a pause Sharon stretched her hand. Kria smiled and willingly shook her hand.
The two of them joined the others. Sharon intentionally chose the seat between Rey and Rinni. That did not go unnoticed by others but no one reacted to it, knowing that Sharon was making an effort to accept them. It was obviously difficult for her to come to terms with the way things were compared to the way they used to be three years ago. They looked at each other uncomfortably.
Kria sensing the tension got up, "So guys, this party has been organized since there have been a lot of good things happening. First, Sharon is back and the doctor has given her medical fitness. Which means, she can join us for future dance performances and classes as well." Everyone clapped and hooted, making Sharon feel warmth spreading in her chest. She had not felt so good in years. At least not what she could remember.
"And," Kria called over the noise, "to top that, we have an offer for a dance performance at an award function." The entire group broke into huge applause.
"Guys," Kria shouted again silencing everyone, "that would mean a little extra effort from our side. We will have to stay back after the classes and come early in the morning for rehearsals. The function is after two months so we have a lot of time to get ready, but that does not mean we take this lightly. Do you get me?" Receiving eager response from her friends, Kria smiled sitting down.
"A new dance performance sounds so exciting." Rinni exclaimed animatedly. The cold drink in her hand spilled on Sharon's hand and dress making her shout, "Oh, shit!"
She rubbed over the place trying to remove the rest of the liquid on her dress. She heard Rinni say, "I am so sorry Sharon."
Rinni moved her hand forward to help her but Sharon raised her hand, saying forcefully, "It's okay, Rinni." She got up and murmured, "I'll go clean it."
Swayam got up stretching his arm in the direction of his room. "Here, this way."
Sharon walked away from the hall and Swayam rushed with her.
"You don't have to come. I'll manage."
"I know. And anyway, I can't really help with the cleaning right." He said, looking at the spot on her dress. He looked up saying, "I came in to give you towel. Just wait here." He walked over to a small cupboard beside a big wardrobe and retrieved a towel from within. Giving it to her, he said, "If you need anything else, call me." Sharon gave a curt nod, and Swayam walked out of the room.
Swayam joined the group and sat down when Rinni with an apologetic face, said, "I am sorry Swayam. Actually some of the drink fell on the sofa as well." He saw the blot on the sofa seat, where Sharon was sitting. He shook his head saying, "That's okay, Rinni. Tomorrow morning, kaka will get it cleaned. Don't worry about it."
Sharon walked out of the washroom after cleaning the stain from her dress. She stopped in her track when she saw Swayam's wardrobe. His cupboard consisted of two compartments but Sharon eyes were on the smaller one. She felt some force pulling her towards it, compelling her to open it. She knew it was wrong to intrude in someone's privacy and a wardrobe was to keep clothes in it. What else did she expect to find in there... But Sharon moved towards it and finally opened it. What she saw left her surprised... pleasant or not, she had no clue about it.
The entire shelf was filled with her pictures and a few objects, which she imagined, might be her belongings. There were pictures of her from the time she had entered college. She did not recognize some of the pictures but they were undoubtedly her photographs. She noticed a single silver anklet in there. She picked it up, and the sound of the tinkling of the bells attached to it, the sound reminded her of Swayam.
How the hell could the stupid bells on a stupid anklet remind her of Swayam? But it was there, the sound it was now pressing in her mind. She could feel something connecting in her mind but not right there. She tried to grasp it but she couldn't, it was slipping out. Exasperated she threw the anklet away and sat down on the bed, with her elbows resting on her knees and her head in her palms.
Swayam worried about Sharon, not understanding what could take her so long, finally got up, walking over to his room. He stopped when he saw Sharon sitting on the bed with her head in her hands. He immediately rushed over to her and kneeling beside her asked urgently, "Sharon, are you okay? What's wrong?"
He held her wrist and was taken aback when Sharon shoved him away and got up walking away from him.
"Don't you understand, you are the problem," Sharon screamed. Swayam stood up confused. "But what did I do, Sharon?"
Sharon closed her eyes taking an unsteady breath in and opening them to glare at him, said, "Can't you stay away from me?"
"Sharon..." he tried to reason but she was in no mood to listen. "Please, for god's sake, give me a little space. Why do you constantly keep clinging to me? Is it so difficult for you to understand that I don't want you anywhere near me. Please stop showing extra concern for me, I don't need it."
Swayam stood motionless.
Sharon moved a step further and said, "And more importantly, I don't need you."
Swayam did not utter a single word in the entire time. He kept staring at her, expressionless. When she was finally done and resorted to glaring at him, her breath heavy, he said coldly, "Are you done? If yes, there are our friends waiting for us. They will be wondering what's taking us so long."
Sharon looked away, spitting out, "I can't stand being here even for a second longer now."
She heard Swayam say, "Then no one's stopping you."
Sharon was taken aback by his behaviour. She did not know what she expected but she did not expect this.
Swayam stormed out of the room and Sharon trudged behind after a minute. She came out just in time to hear him say, "Guys, Sharon does not feel well. She wants to go home."
Sharon felt her heart sink. She clenched her teeth, forcing her tears to stop from coming out. She had never expected to be treated this way by him. No matter she always saw him from a distance, he always made her feel special.
"Rey, will you please drop her home?" Swayam asked Rey.
Sharon interrupted, "Rey, don't bother. I'll call my driver. He will pick me up."
Swayam turned to her saying, "You don't have to stand any inconvenience for a second longer. Rey will drop you home immediately."
Sharon was speechless. She stared at him disbelievingly. Swayam fought back his tears not wanting to open his heart to anyone around.
"Actually, it's quite late now. It's almost eleven." Kria said in between. "We should all go home." She got up. "Come with us, Sharon, Rey will drop you."
Looking away, Sharon walked out of the apartment, closely followed by Simi, Rinni and Kria. Everyone else got up to go home and informing Swayam left the flat. Rey, on the other hand, walked up to Swayam and asked, "You had a fight?"
Swayam looked at him meaningfully. Rey muttered, "So she is back to being the same old Sharon."
"Drop it." Swayam said.
Rey put his hand on Swayam's shoulder and patting it, left.
Swayam walked back to his room and saw Sharon's anklet on the floor, a couple of the bells broken. He rushed to pick it up, now tears his eyes pricking with the hot tears. Sharon had opened his wardrobe. Was that why she was angry with him? He remembered the first time when she had opened that compartment she had said things he never wanted to hear. He remembered her calling him a desperate stalker. He remembered she accused him of being cheap and disgusting.
Was that what she felt now. Was that why she behaved this way? He placed the silver anklet back at its place. He wondered with a huge pain in his chest, did she hate him now?
Sharon was finally back in the haven of her room, she felt tears trickling down her cheeks. She didn't know why but Swayam's indifference had stung her. It felt like a slap on her cheek. Her inability to hurt him had left her feeling hurt and humiliated. Did she not mean anything to him anymore?
But why did she want to hurt him? Why did she focus her entire frustration on him when he had nothing to do with it? No he had everything to do with it. Why had he kept that stupid anklet? It was all his fault.
Sharon lay down on her bed and went into an uneasy slumber.
