A few days went by where Preeti had hid herself in her room. She did not feel like talking to anyone. She did not eat much, and most of the times she was always asleep when Prem came home from the work.
Her mother-in-law had started to get worried about her, so she decided to take her to see a doctor. Preeti on the other hand, had declined it a few times but she had to go anyway.
The driver drove them to the clinic while the mother informed his son about where they were going. Maybe it would be good for Preeti to have Prem there as well for her support.
Preeti couldn't help but feel nervous and almost afraid to think of what might happen in a few hours.
What would her family-in-laws think of her? Most importantly what would he think of her?
The young brunet was too occupied with her heavy thoughts that she almost didn't notice her surroundings - they had arrived at the clinic. She raised her gaze toward Mamta, where she stood outside and held the car-door open for her to climb out.
Once getting inside the clinic they met up with Prem. They managed to meet with the doctor who was going to treat Preeti, as they had already booked an appointment.
The three people got seated inside a small room with the doctor. Mamta informed the female doctor that Preeti had not been feeling well and was constantly bothered with a headache.
The doctor nodded. "The reason for the headache could be many things, such as stress, discomfort or lack of sleep." The doctor wrote a few painkillers she could take to ease the headache.
Preeti nodded her thank you and excused herself so she could get a glass of water from the hallway. Prem, being the gentleman, told her that he could get it for her, but she shook her head and smiled warmly at him that she could do it herself.
While the young woman was outside, Mamta couldn't help but ask if something else was wrong. "Doctor, there isn't anything to worry about is there?"
"No, not at the moment," she paused slightly. "Preeti was here a few weeks ago for a check-up, mainly considering her health."
The mother and son looked at each other with a slight puzzled look on their faces. "Oh, we weren't informed of this. What kind of check-up was it?"
She took a long look at them, especially the man in front of her. "I'm very sorry to inform you, but Preeti cannot become a mother in near future."
"What!?"
"We did some test, and based from them, it says that she's having difficulties to become pregnant." She looked at the shocked faces.
"Did Preeti not inform you of this?"
Prem sat back with an empty feeling in his stomach. His wife could not become a mother. What hurt him the most was that she had hidden it from him. They were supposed to tell each other everything. They were not supposed to have any secrets.
Meanwhile Preeti stood by the doorway and had already listened to their conversation.
She could easily recall the moment where her life had turned upside down. Never in her life would she be able to forget the words which had broken her down.
Preeti was patiently waiting at the doctor's cabin where she was called to get the results from her check-up.
"Preeti. As you know, we did some regular tests over a period of time." She paused and looked down on her files.
Preeti braced herself from the upcoming news.
"I'm very sorry, Preeti. But there is no news of a child. Actually there has been couple of signs of that it may be difficult for you to become pregnant in near future."
Her heart sank by the words he was hearing. "What, but why?"
"The syndrome which makes it difficult for you to become pregnant is called; PCOS - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. It's what stops you from getting pregnant."
"How?" she whispered, "I never had these symptoms before?"
"I know, but you only find out about this once you're trying to get pregnant. There are no other ways to know if someone is suffering from it beforehand."
Preeti could simply not believe her own ears. Did she just hear right, could she never become a mother? Have a child? Start a family?
Preeti came out from her flashback when she noticed three pair of eyes looking at her. She slowly lowered her gaze and looked down at the floor.
She couldn't make herself to look at them.
Mamta, being the mother, stood up and walked toward the young brunette and took her into her embrace and told her that everything would be fine. Yet Preeti couldn't help but wander her eyes toward Prem.
They both caught each other's gazes and held it. He saw the hurt and sadness in her eyes, but she saw entirely something else.
She saw hope and love in his brown eyes.
However they made it outside the tall white building where the two cars stood parked. Mamta took a small glance at her daughter-in-law.
"Why don't you drive with Prem? Maybe it'll bring you in a better mood." She knew that she needed the support at a time like this.
She climbed in the car as Prem started the engine and drove out from the parking lot. They drove in a complete silence as none of them knew what to say. It was a fragile moment for both of them.
Preeti turned her attention on the passing buildings and greenery which she was watching through the windows.
Prem caught her from the corner of his eye. He gently reached out for her hand and placed it on the gear, with his hand on top of hers, so they both change the gear of the car together.
She looked at him with a questionable expression but he assured her that everything would be okay. Their time would arrive in the future one day.
She gave a small smile and tried her best to believe his words. But part of her was surprised that he wasn't mad at her. But then again, this is who he was.
His name did mean love after all. This was the thing which attracted her toward him. She knew there would be light at the end of the tunnel.
For her. For them. For their family.
They arrived back home and parked the car right in front of the house. Preeti couldn't help but feel nervous as she bit her lip. She couldn't make herself face the other family members at the moment.
Nevertheless, they both walked inside through the front door and saw Prem's father approaching them both.
"Don't worry, everything will be fine. No need to worry too much."
Nodding at his words, she went upstairs to her room.
Prem stood back learning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest. His dad came and patted him on the shoulder and made their way into the living room so they could have a small talk together.
Later in the night, Prem went inside his room and found his wife standing near the window and looking outside.
He figured she didn't hear him come inside, as she didn't turn around to face him. He took a few steps toward her and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind.
Preeti placed a hand on his arms as they both stood in complete silence thinking about how their world had crumbled into pieces.
Prem made her turn around so she faced him. He saw her eyes were red and shining a bit more than they usually did. They had somehow lost the spark which he had fallen in love with years ago. It pained him that she was feeling miserable.
He wished he could do something to make her forget. To make her feel better.
Preeti was having a hard time controlling her emotions as she stood facing the man she loved. She slowly buried her face into his embrace where he could feel his shirt getting wet from her tears which were leaking from her eyes.
She sobbed quietly while his arms were wrapped protectively around her tiny frame.
