"Okay, every great story deserves a great title, so I've called it The Khadoos Boss and the Princess Next Door.' It all begins.."
"KT what are you talking about?"
"Shh Rachna, just listen; now where was I?
It all began during the festival of Diwali, you see that's when a young man after many years returned back to India, to the kingdom of Banaras to be exact to fulfill a promise to his daadi. He wasn't at all happy about the decision because he didn't have any happy memories of the place, and India was just too different from the land of America, where he had worked hard and grown famous. But, what he didn't know was that while he was away, a very special princess was growing up in this realm, and that she would be there waiting make a difference in his life.
Unfortunately, he was unable to recognize the princess when he first encountered her; to him she appeared to be just like the other simple folks in the kingdom and just as mischievous, he was certain that she had attached firecrackers to his carriage when he refused to answer her questions during Diwali. Oh, she certainly played the innocent when she got caught, but he knew the truth of the matter. And what were the chances that she would then come in front of his carriage on the next occasion? She was definitely a tricky girl, and the young man knew that she was absolutely the type to be wary of and definitely avoid in this strange place.
Unbeknownst to the young man was that the princess was always near, as her palace was right next door to his, and if he had listened to his daadi then he would have met the princess all the earlier, as Daadi knew the princess' family and had insisted on visiting them this Diwali. But he refused to meet his neighbors, for his work was too important and since he was determined to leave this place to return to America as soon as he could, why bother to meet new people?
Kabir paused to look down at Rachna who walked silently beside him. Staring ahead she coolly spoke, "Keep going."
He couldn't say if it was his story or the tranquility of the park that had calmed her somewhat; he was willing to accept either as the reason at this point. Raising the hand he held, he kissed it gently before continuing.
"What the young man didn't know was that he and the princess had something in common that would bring them together, as both of them loved to design and create beautiful things. It seemed destined that right at the moment he was seeking help that the princess was looking for a position, and although they were not at all happy with the realization of each other at work, this would be the beginning of something very special. It wouldn't be easy to work together as the young man was definitely a Khadoos Boss. Because his work was all that he had in his life, it really bothered him when others didn't feel the same way he did about working.
And the princess was definitely one of the people that bothered him. She was always involving herself in matters that shouldn't have mattered, and she cared about things that were definitely none of her concern, but whenever her help was needed she always got the work done in the end. You would have thought that the Khadoos Boss would appreciate such a hard worker, but more often than not he would scold her for some reason. Many, many times the princess' feelings would be hurt by her hardhearted boss.
Now this not to say our princess was perfect either; you see Khadoos Boss saw plenty of potential in her, if only she would stop being so sensitive and listen to him sometimes, you see sometimes she was too opinionated, and although she was often right, who was she to instruct him, didn't she know who he was?
Slowly and surely though, things began changing, at least they did for Khadoos Boss, as he began to appreciate the princess. When he realized that the princess would soon come of age, he decided to have a grand celebration for her for, you see it seemed that she was not that bad after all. Khadoos Boss decided to create a beautiful gown for the Princess to wear at the celebration and purchased a special jewel to gift her. And what a celebration it was! Everyone had a wonderful time especially Khadoos Boss and the princess who even shared a dance that day, a very special dance.
Kabir felt her hand clasp his just a little tighter and smiled to himself as he continued.
Unfortunately, not everyone was happy with the changes in Khadoos Boss though. His Friend (who was no friend at all) visiting from America, noticed the change in him and resented the effect the princess was having on him. A plot was set in motion to separate Khadoos Boss from the princess, but it was to no avail as he could not stay away from his princess, no matter how angry he got with her. When the Friend (who was no friend at all) sought to bewitch Khadoos and take him back with her to America, an evil conspiracy was formulated to strike directly at the princess. The scheme almost worked, but in addition to being beautiful, the princess was also cunning, and came up with her own plan to save her Khadoos Boss from these deceptions. And in doing so, finally the Khadoos Boss realized that he was in love with his princess.
Sadly the princess was not in love with him, and knowing that this was to be their final time spent together, told her Khadoos Boss ,"Goodbye" and broke his heart. For the first time, the young man realized that there was more to life than work, but it was too late. All he could think about was his princess next door, and how he yearned to see her again.
And so Khadoos Boss devised a plan to reveal his love to his princess, but destiny decided that the time was not yet right and it wasn't until some subtle convincing from a wise sage, and an evening swim, did Khadoos Boss finally find his voice and the courage to tell the princess that he loved her. In a wondrous coincidence the princess next door confessed her love for her Khadoos Boss too. You see, after she had said Goodbye, she realized that not only did she miss him, but loved him as well.
"Are you still listening?"
"You know I am KT, will you finish or not?"
"Thik Hai Rachna, there's a free bench over there, let's sit and I'll continue."
So Khadoos Boss, being more than ready for his Happy Ever After, wished to send out a proclamation telling one and all about his love for his princess. Yet his princess was fearful to do this, would her Papa and Mummy (the King and Queen) approve? She wasn't sure and was too scared to find out. One day however, the princess was finally convinced that it was time to do so and in celebration she decorated her hands beautifully as a demonstration of her love.
And still Destiny said, "No, not yet."
For in the time that the princess next door, was deciding to proclaim her love, another queen became captivated by the princess, and believed that she would be the perfect bride for her son, the Prince. To avoid this marriage, the princess ran away to another land, but she forgot to tell Khadoos Boss why she was leaving, and broke his heart again.
For many months there were two people, both very sad, as each were separated from their one true love. But what the princess and Khadoos Boss didn't know that there were three fairies that were preparing to reunite the pair. Two in the kingdom of Banaras, one keeping an eye on Khadoos Boss and one who patiently waited for the princess' return. The third one, a very special green eyed fairy was actually with the princess in the new land. When it came time for the princess to return to her own kingdom, the green-eyed fairy came home with her where she really went to work to help the princess who she loved like a sister.
First she helped the princess to say sorry to Khadoos Boss, as it had been very mean for her to leave without saying Goodbye.
Then she helped the princess realize that her Papa ...
Leaning on KT's shoulder, Rachna smiled dreamily just because. Obviously this was his very, very sweet way of apologizing to her. He couldn't but help see her mehendi , and her best guess is that Daadi had also spoken to him some time this morning. If he wanted to spend the morning with her telling her fairytales that was fine with her. She was more than willing to be the princess in this story, especially since she knew the ending already. She probably shouldn't let him know how easily he could was pacify her, but, how could she not appreciate the efforts he was willing to make. She was so lucky to have someone who understood her so well. She sighed in contentment as he continued.
...Finally vanquished the prince from their lives, and in celebration the princess decorated her hands once again to demonstrate her love.
She waited smiling... and nothing.
When it became obvious that he was done, Rachna looked to him, "And...then?"
"And then what, Rachna? Don't you think that's a good ending?"
"So you're telling me Khadoos Boss didn't even appreciate the princess' efforts? Really that's it?" She stood up and turned her back to him, crossing her arms angrily, "Of course he wouldn't, he's a man after all. Real or imaginary all of you are idiots!"
"Relax Rachna, it's just a story."
She closed her eyes and cried out in frustration, before turning back to the totally insensitive man she loved...and stopped in her tracks.
"OK let me end it properly then,"
... In celebration the princess decorated her hands once again to demonstrate her love. And just so he wouldn't misunderstand the story detailed in the design, the princess made an addition that only he would understand. And in offering her palms for his inspection, like she did so many months ago..."
Kabir paused and waited for his stubborn princess to act. Her eyes wide as saucers, she looked at him in shock as he had positioned himself next to the bench, on one knee.. Her breath had quickened in realization of what his actions were leading to. Finally she blinked, and biting her lower lip presented her shaking hands.
"...the young man was able to trace the initials that proved the princess' love for her Khadoos Boss, and that the love story that her hennaed hands told was theirs."
Kabir looked up lovingly from his initials in plain view on her palm into his beloved's face and smiled. " So did I fully understand the mehendi this time? Did I tell our story right?"
She nodded, "Ji, but that was definitely a more imaginative interpretation than I would have ever expected from you."
Really? I actually think it's the perfect version for my wife to tell our children someday." Holding her gaze, he kissed her palms each in succession. Then, his voice thick with emotion, he asked of the only woman he had ever truly loved, "Will you tell them this story one day, Rachna?"
His smile faltered and he froze in stunned disbelief when she began to shake her head. "Ra.."
She stopped him with her hand to his lips, and when it seemed he had reached the end of his tether, finally sent him a tremulous smile,
"Not unless we change the title, if I'm to be a princess at the very least you should be my Lord Khadoos. I think Lord Khadoos and the Princess Next Door sounds so much better for our fairy tale."
Kabir smiled in relief and stood to pull her into his arms, "Done...And what about my princess, will her name be changing as well?"
Returning his embrace in full measure, she tearfully answered, "How does Rachna Tripathi sound?"
He closed his eyes and sighed in satisfaction, "Absolutely perfect; that's just what I was thinking of."
Wrapped in his arms in a hold she had no desire to break, Rachna smiled, "KT, you are really going to have to drag me kicking and screaming from this park today."
"I may have one enticement."
Looking up from his chest, she giggled, "Chocolate?"
"Nay, but if we get home soon, we may get to know the date of our engagement." He winked as he spoke, "I've got another story I can tell you if you care to hear."
