Chapter Five- Answers and Pawprints
~rey's POV~
As taani was being checked over
by the pack doctor, I found that I
had an extremely hard time
keeping my eyes off of her. She
was the most beautiful thing I'd
ever seen, and of that I was
certain. She had the most
amazing eyes. Her eyes held
secrets though. Secrets that I was
determined to uncover. No matter
how long it took or how hard I
would have to work, I would get
her to share them with me.
Suddenly, she turned in my
direction and I felt a twist in my
stomach when her eyes locked
with mine.
"What now?" She asked me. I
cocked my head to the side
gesturing I didn't understand
what she meant. I saw humor
dance in her eyes and became
that much more puzzled.
"She's free to go now. I've
checked over her and she seems
to be in tip-top shape. Just bring
her back if she starts feeling odd
or sick." Dr stated.
My cheeks flush with color as I
realised I had completely zoned
out while thinking about my
mate. I let a sheepish smile out
and cleared my throat.
"Thank you, Dr.
taani are you ready to go?" I questioned.
She simply nodded her head in
reply.
When taani stood from the bed
her body gently swayed and I
was her side in an instant, my
arm securely around her. She let
out a huff of air, shrugged off my
arm, and stomped towards the
door. I grinned and ran to catch
up with her.
"Where are you going, Beautiful?
You don't even know where the
house is." I said teasingly.
"I told you not to call me that,
rey." She muttered clearly
unamused.
"Sorry, I forgot," I lied giving her
an innocent smile to which she
rolled her eyes.
"Where are you taking me?"
taani asked while following
behind.
"I'm taking you to my house." I
stated.
I heard as her footsteps stopped
signaling that she had stopped
walking. I turned around to see
the she had her arms crossed
over her chest and if looks could
kill... I'd be dead on the spot. On
her beautiful face she wore a look
that clearly stated 'like hell you
are'. I just laughed and scooped
her up into my arms bridal style
and started walking toward the
exit of the infirmary. Paying no
attention to her struggles.
"Do you have somewhere else
you'd rather go?" I asked making
my way up the trail to the pack
mansion.
"Fine, I'll go with you just put me
down." She finally relented.
I gently placed her on her feet.
After making sure she was
steady, I took a step back to give
her some room. But, I'm guessing
it wasn't enough as she rolled her
eyes once again which resulting
in me grinning again.
"If you want I can answer some
of the questions you might have."
I offered and she gladly took the
opportunity.
"Where are we?" She questioned.
"We're at my pa- er, my family's
mansion." I quickly mended.
"Your family is this rich?!" was
her awestruck response and I
nodded confirming it.
"Well then... What's your last
name?"
singania, "
"Why did you pull me out of the
river?"
That made me pause. I had
planned to tell her about mates
and werewolves in general when
she was calmer and settled in. I
was determined to keep that plan
too. So, I answered with a
truthful answer... Just not the
whole truth.
I told her, "I did it because your
life is important and I care about
you."
She shook her head before
saying, "You don't know me,
rey."
Okay, that stung. It was true but
the bite in her voice had taken
me by surprise. Her tone was full
of resentment which hurt... a lot.
After that she wouldn't meet my
eye and she had her gaze trained
on the ground as if the gravel
was the most interesting thing she
had ever seen.
"I will," I assured her quietly. She
did nothing to acknowledge my
words are just kept walking.
As the mansion came into view
she stopped and stared at it with
her mouth agape. I chuckled at
her reaction and lightly grabbed
her arm coaxing her towards the
house. Before we were even on
the porch the house sat on the
door burst open and my mother
came scrambling out. taani
stood there stiffly, not moving an
inch as my mom wrapped her in
a tight hug. taani's eyes pleaded
with me to save her and I could
tell she was panicking.
"Ma, she's not the touchy-feeling
type," I calmly implied to my
mother.
Almost as soon as the words left
my mouth my mother had her
hands to herself again and took a
step back.
"Sorry dear, I tend to get over
excited," Mom explained in an
apologetic voice.
"No, no. It's not your fault.
You're very welcoming and
friendly... It's just that I don't
respond well to touching." taani
spoke quickly, wanting to ease
my mother's self reproach.
This display of such tenderness
used by taani with my mom
warmed heart. For the first time
since I found her, I was
completely certain my mate
would accept me and my pack.
She would be a good fit for our
pack, I could see it already. She
was a perfect balence between
strong and compassionate. She
would be understanding yet firm,
and she would make an amazing
Luna. But, there was still a
broken, scared look in her eyes
that my wolf and I hoped we
could fix. We wanted to see our
mate carefree with no burdens of
the past weighing on her
shoulders. Yes, I would help fix
her. Even if it was with my last
breath... I would make sure it
happened.
~taani's POV~
rey's mom escorted me to my
room. I was completely and
utterly at a loss of words at how
kind rey's family was. I was
hesitant about staying here at
first, I still am, but the singania
family gave me a sense of
security and safety that I had
never experienced anywhere else
and definitely not at my house.
That, and the fact that I really
didn't want to face my father n that
convinced me to stay here.
"Thank you so much, Mrs.singania ," I told genuinaly
expressed to the wonderful lady I
had spent the day with after rey
told us that he had 'family
buisness to attend to'.
"Anytime dear, it was lovely
spending the day with you and I
assure you you'll be seeing more
of me.
Mrs.singania said over her
shoulder as turned to leave.
"Uh, before you go... Would you
happen to know where rey is?
I'd like to talk to him," I
requested as politely as I could.
"I'll send him right in," She
followed her statement with a
smirk and a knowing look in her
eyes which flustered me, not
knowing what her look was for.
Then, she turned on her heel and
left the room closing the door
softly behind her.
I took in the room around me. It
was the most lavish room I'd ever
been allowed to enter, much less
stay in. The floor was covered in
a soft white carpet that matched
the white celling tiles. The walls
were a rich, dark purple and
were decorated with different
appliqus. There was one that
particularly caught my attention.
The wall oposite the bed was
adorned with a large wood
square. Burned into the wood
was the outline of a pawprint.
Each section of the pawprint had
a scene etched into it. In the
largest portion of the paw print
was scence with a pack of wolves
running together through the
snow. I looked closer and saw
that each wolf had an incredibly
detailed face. Each one looked
carefree, their eyes were bright
and filled with joy, their tongues
hung out of their mouths in
merriment, and they looked as
though they didn't have a care in
the world. The scene was so
intricately carved that you could
even see the snow that had been
kicked up by their paws.
In each of the four smaller spaces
was a different scene. There was
one of a large wolf nuzzling a
smaller wolf, love shining
brightly and both of their eyes.
Another, was of two young wolf
pups playing together in a
meadow. The next was of a large
wolf that had a smaller wolf
against his side and the smaller
wolf had a wolf pup pressed
against her side. The two larger
wolves both had there heads cast
downward toward the young wolf
with a look of adoration in their
eyes. Finally, the last was of a
pack forming a circle
representing their unity and
never ending loyalty. I was so
emersed in the echanting images
I hadn't even noticed that rey
had entered the room until he
made his presence clear by
speaking.
"You know, this piece holds an
enormous amount of symbolism
and meaning." He said quietly.
I just about jumped ten feet in
surprise and gave out a little
squeak. After I had recovered
from the small heart attack I had,
I turned toward him with a
curiosity filled gaze.
"And what would that be?" I
questioned, truely interested to
hear the answer.
"I'll tell you soon," He replied. I
frowned at not getting an answer
but let it go knowing I was to
tired to fight him on it.
I crawled into the pillowy bed
and wrapped myself in a cacoon
of blankets before beckoning him
over. He sat on the edge of the
bed and I leaned my head into
the pillow and tilted it so I was
faceing rey.
"I wanted to thank you for letting
me stay here." I said lightly.
He smiled at me warmly before
saying, "It's my pleasure to have
you here."
I yawned and closed my eyes as
drowsiness fogged my mind. I
slowly opened my eyes and
timidly asked the question I
wanted to.
"I-I sometimes have a hard time
falling asleep in new places. So,
if it wouldn't be to much trouble,
could you maybe lay down with
me for a little bit? I mean, you
obviously don't have to because
this is your house and everything
just-"
He cut off my nervous rambling
my sliding into the bed next to
me and whispering, "Of course I
will, Princess. I'll stay until you're
asleep, okay?"
I nodded and closed my eyes
once more. I felt his arms
encircle my waist and gently pull
me against his chest. I wanted to
pull away, but the safe, secure
feeling of being close to him
added with my sleepiness sleep. it
nearly impossible. So, I stopped
fighting it and sunk into his
embrace, letting his steady,
strong heart beat pull me into a
dreamless yet peaceful sleep.
