Chapter Six- Mates?
~ taani's POV~
I woke up to find my bed empty besides me. I stretched and crawled out of bed. I turned in a circle looking for the bathroom. Once I spotted it, I checked to make sure it had a shower before exiting again and beginning my search for a closet.
As it turns out, my room was equipped with a fully stocked closet. Why? I had no idea, but I figured I could ask rey later. I picked out a pair of jean shorts and a comfortable fitted blue tee shirt.
I scurried into the bathroom and started up the shower, quickly stripped, and steped into the warm rays of water. I let out a content sigh and closed my eyes as the water soothed my sore muscles. I turned around and winced when the stream of water hit my stomach. I looked down to see that several patches of varying shades of purples and blacks were still stretched across the length of my tummy. I shuttered remembering how I'd recieved them. I turned my attention to the shampoo an thoroughly lathered my hair followed by a coat of conditioner. After I was happy with my hair cleansing I moved on to washing my body and finally rinsed off and stepped out on to a towel. I
dressed in the clothes, that actually fit me pretty well, braided my hair, and left the
to room. When I stepped into the hallway
the scent of bacon and eggs surrounded me and my stomach rumble. I took in a deep breath and followed the scent to the
kitchen. Upon entrance into the kitchen, I came across rey cooking with a little girl on his back. rey noticed me and smiled
in greeting.
"rey! rey! Put me down, I wanna say hi!" the little girl squealed as she saw me.
rey told her, "Be nice," before
gently setting her down. She ran to me and wrapped her arms around my legs. I squatted down to her height before giving
her a proper hug in return. I had always loved children. I wasn't around them all that much, but when I was I was always amazed and the innocence and sweetness that shone in their eyes.
"Hi!" she giggled out.
"Hi there, I'm taani. What's your name, sweetie?" I asked her in that tone that I always seem to talk in around children and puppies.
"Madeline! But everybody calls me Maddie... Well, excepted for rey. He calls me Trouble or Mads. So you can call me anything really, I don't mind." she added with a smile before turning to rey and saying,
"taani's your mate, right rey?"
"Madeline singania !" rey yelled and his eyes widened and he looked between Maddie and I frantically. His mouth opened and closed several times as if he
wanted to say something but couldn't quite formulate the right words. So, instead he gestured towards a plate of bacon, eggs, and toast in offering which I
gladly accepted. Maddie just shrugged her shoulders and took off skipping yelling, "Mommy! Mommy!" repeatedly.
I settled down at the table and began eating while rey sat across from me. I waited to see if he was going to say anything.
After a few moments of silence, it became apparent he wasn't. I took matter into my own hands by clearing my throat and asking,
"Are you gonna clear up this whole 'mate' thing? News flash, we aren't in Australia, so I don't understand why Maddie called
me your mate." I finished sarcastically.
He sighed loudly and raked his fingers through his dark hair and answered, "Okay, come with me."
He took my hand hand a lightly tugged me to my feet. Once I was on my feet he led me down a long corridor to a door I hadn't seen before. Without saying
anything he opened the door and dragged me into the room. I felt all the air leave my lungs as I looked around me. Plants and flowers covered every square inch of the room. The skylight over head allowed sunshine to flow through the room. Vines of plants climbed to the ceiling and even then stretched across the rafters. Hanging down in certain places to create a canopy. A cobble path lead to a leaf covered swing in the center of the garden and I could hear a brook bubbling nearby. I turned around to face rey again and blushed when I saw that while I was staring at the scenery around me, he was
staring at me.
"This is gorgeous," I told rey, slightly breathless.
"This has always been my favorite place in the house. You're welcome to come here whenever you like, although you
might have to deal with me being here too," He added a wink with that last statement and my stomach was invaded by millions of little butterflies flitting and
fluttering about and I gave him my best smile.
"I don't mind," I told him, actually meaning it, which surprised even me. He smiled at me before taking my hand again and guiding me to the swing. We sat down side by side on the foliage covered porch
swing and I gently pushed off the ground to begin the swinging motion before turning to look at rey and I waited for him to start his explanation.
"Okay, taani, I'm going to explain this as simply as I can...And I will warn you now it's gonna be hard to understand but
I just need you to trust me, okay?" he asked me with a voice that almost portrayed fear.
"I trust you," I told him without even thinking about it... Which frankly, scared the hell out of me.
He stood up from the swing, started pacing, threaded his fingers through his hair, and took a deep breath before turning towards me and speaking again.
"My family and I are werewolves. But, it's not like the traditional myths you hear about. We can phase whenever we want to or need to. We call it phasing instead of changing because even in wolf form the man is always present. Just like how I constantly have a wolf in me now. I know
that's confusing and I'm sorry I'm trying to explain it the best I can.
"Just like wild wolves, werewolves have to be in a pack. In a pack, there is an Alpha and an Alpha Female, who is often called the Luna of the pack. An Alpha is
kind of like the king of a pack. He keeps order in the pack and stops problems like fights and battles from occurring unless necessary, and the Alpha Female does pretty much the same thing. The two of
them together are considered the 'Alpha Pair'. After the alpha, there is a Beta who is like a second in command, and a Delta who is a third in command. Are okay with
all of this so far?"
"Since you said you can shift or phase or whatever anytime, could you do it now?" I asked him quietly. Something in his eyes told me he was being sincere... But I
was still skeptical. I mean werewolves? Don't ya think that's a little far-fetched?
He nodded once and turned away from me. Within seconds, there was an enormous grey and white wolf with amazing amber eyes standing in front of me. Woah... Okay, maybe it's not as far-
fetched as I thought. I slowly walked towards the wolf and put my hand out expecting him to sniff it, but, instead he nuzzled his head against my hand. I
laughed and started petting him.
"You can phase back now," I told
him, and sure enough within moments rey was in front of me yet again.
"So you can shift back with your clothes still on? Well, that's a pretty nifty skill," I told him with a smile.
He smiled back before asking hopefully, "So... you believe me?"
"Of course, it's kind of hard not to when you actually shift into a giant wolf." I pointed out with a small giggle.
"True enough," he agreed with a grin, "Do you have anything you want me to clear up before I continue?"
"I was just wondering what pack you belong to and who the Alpha pair is." I told him.
"Well, this pack is called the Western Moonstone Pack and the Alpha pair is... Uh, actually my parents."
"So you're like a wolf prince?" I asked for teasingly and was rewarded with a deep chuckle.
"I guess you could say that," he agreed before pacing again.
"So, I guess you want me to explain the whole mate thing Mads brought up," He said hesitantly and I nodded. "Mates are like soul-mates. Each wolf has only one and will spend their whole life looking for their mate if need be. The longer a male wolf doesn't find his mate, the more darkness plagues their soul, driving them towards insanity. That's why unmated wolves can be extremely volatile and
dangerous. But, if a male finds his mate she conquers the darkness within him and showers him in light. She completes the his soul, calms his wolf, and will love him despite all his flaws. She gives him
something to live for."
"Well that's all fine a dandy for the guy, but what does the girl get?" I questioned.
He turned so he was facing my directly and paused for a moment before saying, "She gets a best friend, a guardian, a lover, and everything in between. She gets a man who will love her whole- heartedly and without restriction. She gets a man who would give his life for hers in a heartbeat, who will move mountains to
protect her, and capture the moon to make her happy. She gets the one person who will complete her and will always be there for her. That's what she gets."
I stood there with tears gathered in my eyes, shallow breath, and my mouth hanging open. That was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard and as rey said those things I became aware of how
much I wanted those things, and the scariest part was that I realised how much I wanted them... With rey. What Maddie had said earlier suddenly raced to
the forefront of my mind.
"B-but Maddie... S-sh- she said that I-" I struggled to get the words out so instead he said it. Despite his calm, gentle tone I still froze at his words as he said,
"Yes, Beautiful, I'm yours and you are mine."
