*Whistle* *Whistle*
R: (Shouting) Sanyukta!! Kya karahi ho? Behri hogayi ho kya? Cooker ki seeti sunaayi nahi de rahi? Bundh karo naa gas ko!!
V:(Waspishly)Ismein kaunsi nayi baat hai? Yaha kabhi shaanti toh ho hi nahi sakti!(In her sycophant tone) Parth kahaa hai? Ek vahi toh hai jo shaant rehta hai! Parth..Parth. Kaha ho tum?
S: Randhir..Vidushi. Mein aata goondh rahi hu dinner ke liye. Haath gande the isiliye nahi bundh kar rahi thi.
Saying so, she turned off the gas and took down the cooker. She then came barging out of the kitchen with haldi(turmeric) on her cheeks and aata(flour) on her hands. On seeing her, Randhir who was sitting in the drawing room, reading a newspaper, started laughing out loud. Sanyukta glared at him. She then spoke to him in a strident voice.
S:Bahut hassi aarahi hai naa tumhe?
She picked up a plate of flour from the kitchen and threw the flour on his face. Randhir ceased laughing. His whole face was covered in white aata. It was Sanyukta's turn to crack up now. She tried to muffle her increasing giggles, but failed miserably in doing so. SHe burst into fits of laughter and thus failed to notice that Randhir had now joined her in the kitchen. Randhir picked up a bowl of sabzi.
S:(screaming) Randhir! Voh nahi!
But it was too late. Randhir threw all the sabzi at her. Unfortunately the bowl also slipped from his hand and crashed into tiny bits of glass pn the floor. Sanyukta stared at the floor in shock.
S: Yeh kya kiya tumne! Ab raat ke liye mujhe firse sabzi banaani padegi. Tumne poori sabzi gira di. Ab khadde khadde dekh kya rahe ho? Kuch karne toh nahi vaale ho naa? Toh niklo yaha se isse pehle ki yeh kaach ke tukde tumhe chubne lage.
Sanyukta then bent down and started gathering the broken pieces of glass. Randhir looked at her for a moment and felt like helping her but ultimately his ego and MCP side got the better of him and he walked out of the kitchen. Sanyukta cleared up the mess in the kitchen and quickly prepared aaloo ki sabzi for dinner. She laid the table and served everyone roti and sabzi.
After dinner everyone retired to their beds but Sanyukta continued cooking as she had to prepare food for all the people at the function day after. The cooker was too small and to make rice for 500 people she'd atleast need to use the cooker 25-30 times, approximately. While cooking the fried rice, she side by side started frying aaloo pakodas and making the batter for moong dal ke pakode. At around 2:00 am, Randhir came to the dining hall to fill an empty bottle of water from his room and noticed Sanyukta sleepily working in the kitchen.
R: Farzi? Soyi nahi ab tak? Jaao so jaao! Kal pakkaa lena khaana.
S:(cowed/sleepily) Nahi. Aaj atleast thoda khaana pakkaa leti hu..kal kaam kum ho jaaega.
R: Sanyukta. As a captain, yeh mera order hai ki tum abhi so jaao. Kal run through bhi hai. Fir ek rookhi sukhi surat(face) leke aaogi kal. Aur run through mein bhi ache se nahi behave karogi toh ab chalo so jaao.
Having spoken in his very authorative voice, he caught hold of Sanyukta's elbow and took her straight to her room. Sanyukta was pretty tired and thus instead of resisting and chiding him, she just flopped down on the bed. Randhir smirked and went back to the kitchen. He turned off the gas, put all the fried pakodas, pakoda batter, and fried rice inside the refrigerator and returned to his own room to catch some sleep.
------------At dawn------------
Sanyukta's eyes lazily fluttered open as glistening rays of sunlight danced across her face. She felt rejuvenated and quickly freshened up. She then went to the kitchen and set to work. By nine in the morning, everyone had awakened and assembled on the dining table where they were greeted with a mouth watering breakfast. Sanyukta had prepared kheer for everyone.
S:(In her merry voice with a glowing smile)Kehte hai shubh kaam karne se pehle kuch meetha khaana chahiye! Aur aaj run through hai program ka toh ..haazir hai, Sanyukta's Special Kheer!!
V:(expressing disgust)Oh but Sanyukta! Itna saara kheer khaakar mere calories aur weight increse ho jaaenge!
P:Sanyukta, kheer sahi mein bahut swaadisht bana hai. Aapko haatho mein toh jese jaadoo hai xD
Vidushi twisted her mouth in a scowl and looked at Sanyukta angrily.
V: Sanyukta, kal raat se tum bahut kaam kar rahi ho. Aaj run through ke baad, lunch mein pakaaungi.
S:(eyes bulging) Are you sure Vidushi?
V: Haan haan, kyun? Mein bahut acha khaana pakaati hu. Ab chale function ke run through ke liye?
------------At the forest, Function Arena---------------
*clap* *clap*
Everyone applauded for the group of dancers that had just performed on the stage.
S:Amazing guys! Thank you so much for coming here on such a short notice although we'd booked you only for tomorrow. Awesome performance guys, Thank you once again!
The run through had gone perfectly. To everyone's surprise, Sanyukta and Randhir didn't fight or have a disagreement at any point of time suring the run through. Yeah sure, they did bicker at regular intervals but thats their habit. And you don't get rid of your habits easily, do you? xP
All the lights worked properly and there were no electrical problems. Vidushi was full of malice for Sanyukta as everyone was praising her for the way she had decorated the function area which looked neither too baroque nor too plain. Vidushi was full of envy and thus went back to the hotel early, saying that she has to cook lunch. Sanyukta, Randhir, Parth and the others, took one final look at all their arrangements before leaving. Back at the hotel, Vidushi was trying to cook a cauliflower sabzi for lunch. Initially she had ordered food from a restaurant but to her utter dissappointment the food turned out to be awfully distasteful/tasteless. She was left with no other optiion than to cook herself, although she knew nothing of cooking. The others soon returned and Vidushi eagerly waited for them to taste her food.
Sahil: Yeh kya hai!!! Jali hui roti!!
R:Vidushi what the hell is this?
Randhir pulled out a strand of hair from the sabzi on his plate. Seeing that, everybody felt like puking. Jiggy spat out the sabzi he was eating, saying it was too salty. Finally, they had to order room service. It then clicked in Vidushi's slow working brain, that she could have easily called room service and said that the food was made by her. Poor Vidushi! Her frustated expression was a sight! After lunch Sanyukta went back to the kitchen to finish cooking her enlisted menu. Five minutes later a shrill scream from the kitchen, echoed around the entire suite.
R: Kya hua Farzi? Paagal kutte ne kaata hai kya? Kyun chilla rahi ho?
Sanyukta was on the verge of tears. All the colour had drained out of her face and she looked sepulchral. She pointed towards the dustbin. Randhir turned towards the dustbin and stared, horrified. All the pakoda batter that Sanyukta had prepared last night had been dumped/emptied into the dustbin.
R:(shouting angrily) Vidushi!! Idhar aao.
Vidushi came running into the kitchen.
V:Kya hai, paagalo jaise kyun chilla...
She receded mid-speech as she saw what Randhir was pointing towards. She suddenly looked confused, or rather, felt frightened. Her face reflected what she felt. It looked as though she had been beleaguered.
R: Tumne yeh kyun faika?
V: Guys mujhe laga voh koi kaam ka nahi hai. Mujhe laga voh gali hui mithaai hai.
Sanyukta stood with a blank expression. She then very loudly averred.
S: Tumhaare dimaag ke kuch screw dheele hai, yeh toh pata tha. Aaj yeh saabit kar diya tumne ki tumhaare toh saare screw gir gaye hai! Moong dal ke pakode ka batter ko gali hui mithaai samajh ke faik diya? Just get out of my sight Vidushi. Now! Dont irritate me more with your presence.
Vidushi walked out of the kitchen but instead of looking expiated, she looked unabashed.
Sanyukta wiped off the tears that were threatening to fall from her eyes and started remaking the batter. Randhir silently left the kitchen as he understood the need for Sanyukta to remain alone for sometime. The perspicacity that the two of them shared, was astounding.
-----------After dinner------------
Kaustaki washed the dishes while Vidushi wiped them clean. Then all of them except Randhir and Sanyukta, went to bed.
S:Randhir...Voh tum ice cream, soft drinks aur gulaab jaamun laane vaale the naa?
Randhir suddenly stiffened up. The Randhir who was usually puissant and very cocky, now seemed hesitant as he staccatoed. The words tumbled out of his mouth in a torrent. Sanyukta had no lifeline to save her from drowning in them.
R:Sanyukta, voh asal mein, ice cream aur soft drinks toh mai le aaya par gulaab jaamun mujhe mile nahi. Mai jiss bhi sweet shop mein gaya, vahaa sirf 10-20 gulaab jaamun the aur halwai keh rahe the ki 300 gulaab jaamun ke liye, atleast do din lagenge.
Sanyukta glanced downwards mutedly. She sat down on the floor, castigating herself inexorably. After fifteen minutes of self-castigation, Sanyukta finally stood up. Sanyukta was a strong and determined person. She was not one to give up and start crying. Instead of breaking down she started thinking of a way to face the situation.
S: Ab kya karein? Dekho aaloo ke pakode aur moong daal ke pakode ready hai. Kal serve karne se pehle ek baar garam kar denge. Chowmein, fried rice and manchurian bhi ready hai. Soup bas ban hi gaya hai. Ab gulaab jaamun ke jagah kya desert de jo jaldi ban jaaega?
Randhir didn't know why, but he felt extremely restless looking at Sanyukta's tensed expression.
R: Umm...Sanyukta I think sabse zyaada jaldi toh fruit cream hi banega. Aur vese bhi hotel ne humein bahut saare fruits provide kiye hai aur cream ki kumi nahi hai fridge mein. Tum chaaho toh mein tumhaari madad kar sakta hu. I mean, zyaada log honge toh kaam jaldi khatm hoga.
Sanyukta just looked at him with a grateful expression. She didn't mock him or suspect his intentions. She agreed to him and the two of them set to work. The two of them finished making the desert by midnight. It doesn't take a genius to guess that they had worked in perfect coordination. Ofcourse they did banter back and forth, can they live without bantering? But still, together they had prepared the most delicious fruit cream, no doubt! Finally now, everything was perfect and Sanyu could sleep peacefully, thinking about tomorrow..Sunday...Final day...Program day.
