CHAPTER 5
It took Sanyukta some time to register what was hapenning. The last person she expected to approach her was Karan. As soon as the realization that a CITE student was in their mechanical lab set in, Sanyukta quickly gathered all the papers related to her project and stuffed it in her bag.
Karan noticed this and said, "Arey, i am sorry yaar. I shouldn't have entered like that. But I really needed to talk to u."
His words caught Sanyukta's attention and she flared, "Why?? So that u can throw some more insults at me? Listen Karan, the last time we interacted, u were in hospital bed and so I restrained myself. This time nothing can stop me from lashing out. So please, just leave."
"Sanyukta, mujhe bolne ka mauka toh do. I want to apologise.." Karan spoke.
Sanyukta looked up and met his gaze. "Apologize? Seriously?"
"Yes. Listen Sanyukta, I was wrong about u & I admit it. But Randhir told me about how u accompanied him everyday to the hospital and how u were genuinely concerned about me. This made me realize my mistake. I was too quick to judge u. Can we forget our differences and start afresh?" he said.
Sanyukta processed his words in her brain, all the while eyeing him from top to bottom, trying to find out if this was all a trick. But he seemed to speak from his heart. And Sanyukta smiled and replied, "Ok Mr. Karan. Forgiven and forgotten."
"Friends?" he said extending his hand.
"Friends", replied Sanyukta and they shook hands.
"Btw, I would love to chat, but I am getting late. I should return to my hostel. Catch u later", Sanyukta told him.
"Bye Sanyukta. See u around!" he replied and left.
-The next day-
The morning was bright and sunny and Sanyukta woke up with excitiment. Today was the day when students from 15 other colleges would grace the grounds of FITE. She & Kaustuki quickly got dressed and came to the college grounds. What met their sight left them amazed. There were banners all around. A huge make-shift stage had been set for the cultural nights. There were booths everywhere for all the technical shows. And FITE campus was brimming with students fom all walks of life - from nerds to divas, from the quiet to the loud, from the serious ones to the goofy ones.
"Hi" said a guy to Sanyukta & Kaustuki, "Which way is the guest house?"
"Go straight and turn left", replied Sanyukta.
The guy was over 6 foot tall, well built and had a soft looking visage.
"Thanks a lot", he replied with a smile, "I am Parth by the way, from Regional Engineering College, Bangalore."
"Hello parth, it's nice to meet you", the girls replied in unison.
And the introductions continued. Within less than an hour, Sanyukta & Kaustuki had introduced themselves to god knows how many students from other colleges.
Just then Sanyukta's phone rang. It was Randhir.
"Sanyukta, where are u?" he said.
"I am on the grounds. Should we start on the project?" Sanyukta replied.
"I have started already. Been in the lab for the past hour. Get down here quick", he said before hanging up.
"kaustuki i need to go. Randhir wants to work for the project. Cya soon" sanyukta said and ran towards the lab.
-Mechanical lab-
"You are late", he said without looking up from his model.
"U never said I had to get here at 7am. U could have called me earlier", she replied.
"You aren't a VIP that i have to extend invitation for u. U should know that we start early." Randhir loved these little banters. They made him feel alive. She made him feel alive. It was like she was the catalyst to his determination. She challenged him and made him persevere more and more.
"Ab aise he ladenge ya kuch kaam bhi hoga?" Sanyukta said irritably.
"Kaam toh tab hoga jab tum apna research mujhe dikhaogi. Have u found anything on google about wind energy or u were too busy to search?" Randhir said smirking. He was clearly enjoying getting on her nerves.
"Shut up yaar. I researched and here is all the info. I typed it down for u.." Sanyukta slammed sheets of papers before him.
"So, Miss engineer has finally learnt to do my bidding" he teased.
That was it. Sanyukta erupted.
"Dekho, tumhe mere sath kaam nhi karna toh mat karo. But don't bicker unnecessarily. I have done my job. So why don't u keep mum and do urs?"
Randhir looked up from his model and said, "Karan met u?"
This wasn't the sort of reply Sanyukta was expecting. In fact she had forgotten all about her meeting with Karan.
"Oh shit! I forgot to tell u...Karan met me...he apologized. Umm...he said u made him realize..." and she trailed off, unable to figure out how to continue. Randhir merely nodded and went back to his work.
"Thank u", sanyukta said after sometime, "I know u did this because u felt bad about his outburst at the hospital."
Randhir remained quiet. Sanyukta wondered what was going on in his mind. Everytime she said thank u or sorry to him, he usually remained mum.
"So the blades of the wind-mill are the key to generation of force. We have to make sure that we generate optimum power from this model." His words broke Sanyukta out of her thoughts and she focussed on the project.
For 2 hours, they worked in utter silence and Sanyukta marvelled at their sync. They worked in complete tandem even without muttering instructions to each other. Their model had reached a definite shape, with only finishing touches remaining.
"Not bad Agarwal" he said, finally breaking the silence engulfing them, "We make a good team."
Sanyukta smiled. "Atleast u admitted it", she said.
"We'll continue tomorrow then. Bye", he said and was about to leave when someone called out to them.
"Randhir...Sanyukta"
They turned to find Karan striding towards them.
"Hi", he said, "Agar tum log free ho, toh canteen chale?"
-Classroom-
Meanwhile, Jiggy, Kaustuki, sahil and Vidushi were busy with their individual projects.
Jiggy was making a transformer. Kaustuki was making a solar charger, Sahil was trying his best to make a thief alarm of sorts. But Vidushi just sat there doing nothing. She had no idea what to make. She was completely lost.
"Damn Vidushi. Kuch toh soch yaar. Vardhan sir tujhe kaccha kha jayega agar kal tak tuney ek demo nhi diya toh" she thought to herself. And then a bright idea struck her! "Wow! why didn't of that before? Now I don't have to worry about my project anymore!" She gave a victorius smile, looked at the other 3 of her classmates working hard to manage their projects, smirked and left the classroom.
-CANTEEN-
Sanyukta had insisted on not coming here. But Karan was adament and Randhir too asked her to join them. So here she was, sitting with two best friends, feeling a bit uncomfortable, but happy none-the-less.
"Kya logi tum?" karan asked her.
"Burger" randhir replied before she could say anything. What surprised her was that he spoke her mind. She asked him "How did u know I was gonna order that?"
Randhir seemed to realize what he had just said and quickly covered it up with a "Arey uss din hospital se aate waqt bhi yehi liya tha tumne, toh bas bol diya.."
Sanyukta smiled to herself thinking how much Randhir actually noticed the nuances about her.
Karan ordered burger for her, pizza for himself and noodles for Randhir.
"Toh Sanyukta...mechanical kaisa lag raha hain?" karan enquired.
"Iski bas chale toh iss department ko khareed le", randhir piped up.
And both him & Karan burst out laughing.
"Karo...karo... mere expense mein aur mazaak karo", said sanyukta feigning annoyance. But deep down was really happy to see Randhir's smile and laughter back. She had missed this Randhir a lot.
And as they ate their food, Karan & Randhir chatted away rapidly, often the latter cracking jokes about Sanyukta and they both laughed their heart out. Once Randhir even winked at Sanyukta after making a particularly cunning joke about her, sending her heart-rate running a mile per hour!
"God he looks angelic with that smile", Sanyukta thought.
She kept looking at him for god knows how long until she felt Karan's gaze on her and quickly averted her eyes.
"I never thought hanging out with u could be so much fun Sanyukta. Randhir & me always enjoy ourselves. But today, u made things even better", Karan told her smiling once they had finished their food.
"Han han", replied Sanyukta, "Why not? U guys could get to make fun of me. But seriously Karan. Thanks for ur treat. Today was really fun."
"If u two are done with ur pleasantries, can we please leave?" Randhir said yawning, "I am tired."
"Yeah, even i should head back. I have my project to work on" replied Karan.
"Are u doing an individual project or a group one?" sanyukta asked.
"Group, with a friend Vikram. I guess our main competition will be u guys. We all know how talented Randhir is. So it's a huge challenge", Karan replied.
"Well, all the best to u all. Hope the best team wins", Sanyukta said.
"Karan aur ek word bhi mat bol. Ja ab, nhi toh yeh yahan bak-bak karti rahegi", Randhir said tiredly.
Karan laughed and bade goodbye to both of them before leaving.
"Chalein?" Randhir said.
"Han han, chalo!" Sanyukta replied.
And Randhir walked her upto her hostel.
"Aaj mazaa aya", she told him, once they reached.
Randhir looked at her and said, "Free mein khana khane ka mazaa he kuch aur hain, hain na farzi?"
And he winked at her and turned to leave.
"MCP...bhaad mein jah!" Sanyukta called out in mock anger. But she merely received another wink from him, before he disappeared.
