PART 33
Vikrant's Residence:
There was time in life when all she did was pray that her husband would notice her existence and grant her the affection and love that she craved for. But that was when she was married to RajJi and when she realized very late that he could only love one person- Divya.
It shattered her when she figured out that she was trapped in a loveless marriage where the hope that Raj would even spare her a glance, let alone care for her, was seemingly impossible. There was even a fleeting thought in her mind to attract her husband by her looks; which she did, but felt terribly ashamed that she stooped so low to grab his attention. Why was she so desperate? She wondered. And how could she even fathom that he would fall for her when he had made it very clear that he was in love with someone else.
She appeared tough on the outside when she was on a war path with her in-laws. But inside was just a vulnerable girl whose self confidence and self esteem were on an all time low. It felt like another lifetime when she was Sarita Dhanraj, an extremely intelligent, smart and rich girl who had an ambition in life to flourish in the field of business. She assumed that a girl could achieve her goals post marriage too which made her agree to her marriage with RajJi, even though she aspired to study further.
She was gifted with the most loving parents a girl could ever want or be blessed with. She trusted them to make the right choice for her. On the day of their marriage, when it was revealed to her that her fianc was in love with someone else, she was nave enough to think that she could turn this marriage into a successful one and that with the passage of time things will fall in place. She proceeded with her vows even though her parents here dead set against it. She was young then and did not realize the huge blunder that she was about to commit. She was living in the ideal world where she assumed that the abundance of love that she would shower upon RajJi and his family would be enough. But little did she realize then that it was a disaster in waiting.
Her marriage turned out to be farce and the relationship with her in-laws was always laced with tension. She dedicated so much time towards turning this marriage around that she lost sight of her aim in life. She was embroiled in the day to day fights with her husbands' parents. And she did not want to confide in her parents; she knew that they would support and welcome her back with open arms. But this botched marriage was her mistake and she deemed herself a failure. So she put up a good show to make them believe that she was happy, though she knew deep down that her parents were not convinced of that. The truth was that she was afraid; scared that they would pity her which was something she could not take at that moment.
They tried to reach out to her out of concern and what did she do? She inflicted pain upon them knowingly when she discarded their love in favor of her then husband, which brought tears of sadness to her eyes now. Oh, how foolish had she been, blinded by the devotion to her husband, which she branded as love, failing to notice that RajJi was just a habit that she had to break free from. It made her take extreme measures which led to alienating herself from the most caring people in the world.
And when RajJi took the decision to get her re-married, was when common sense finally came knocking at her door- that her husband was still in love with his Divya and that she cannot do anything to change that. She accepted it and realized at last that she was better off without him and that she needed to flush this toxin called devotion out of her system. She was ashamed of herself when she realized that she was figuring out an escape route; and was even mortified that she did not think twice about the consequences of inflicting the same kind of emotional trauma that she underwent, on the next person that she would be married to.
She knew then that she was drained of love and that was an emotion which she was incapable of offering to the next probable beau. And just when she wanted to back out of re-marriage and was wondering how to explain her stance to RajJi, god presented her with the ideal opportunity.
She entered the perfect loveless marriage that was offered by Vikrant Suryavanshi. He expected her to shower her affection and love, but only on Abhiman, whom she had already begun to care for. He seemed to be immersed in the memories of his deceased ex-wife and hence had not re-married for a long time. He married her not because he needed a wife but because his son needed a mother. And just like that she forgot about her failed first marriage and jumped into the role of being the best mother that Abhi could have. Her self-confidence doubled as Abhi reciprocated her love and she no longer considered herself a failure, because this relationship was progressing beautifully in spite of the hurdles that she faced in the form of Abhi's grand parents and uncle.
Just when she assumed that this motherly love was sufficient and that she did not have it in her to love her companion; she realized that it was too late. She was already head over heels in love with Mr. Suryavanshi. She could not help but smirk at the irony of it all; she once again fell for a person whom she knew was very well was in love with someone else, only this time it was a deceased person and that her love was genuine, not a necessity born out of the obligation of being a wife unlike her first marriage.
Sarita was jolted out of her thoughts when Abhiman came rushing towards her excitedly only to be cautioned by his dad to slow down since his mother was hurt. She glanced at her husband who returned to their room after seeing the doctor off and realized that the way Mr.Suryanavshi had been caring for her the past half an hour, might have been the reason that she drifted off into the past.
She recalled how VikrantJi held the cotton to her bruised waist and how he seemed impatient and irritated that the doctor was not there yet. And when the doctor arrived he all but yelled at her for being late and he explained where Sarita was bruised, without moving from her side. Dr. Tripati first checked the waist and said that it was just surface injury and that there was nothing to be worried about. She asked him to hold the cotton still and checked her ankle. It wasn't swollen much, but the doctor insisted that it needed to be x-rayed and shown to an orthopedist.
So she wrote down a pain killer for the time being, until they could meet the specialist; and asked Mr.Suryavanshi to move so that she could dress Sarita's injury. While Dr.Tripati was at it, her husband made a call, to fix an appointment with an orthopedist which Sarita noticed silently. She understood from his end of the conversation that the appointment was scheduled for 11 O'clock. She noticed her husband calling his office to reschedule all his meetings for the next day as he had an emergency at home. This triggered the musings and she laughed inwardly now with misery when she realized that she did manage to capture the attention of this husband, but was his concern for her born out of the obligation of being her spouse?
But his actions spoke otherwise, like he genuinely cared for her, like a friend, maybe? She wondered. She could only hope that his concern was not due to any kind of sympathy he held for her because of what happened the night before. Since pity was the last thing that she needed, especially from him.
Vandana on the other hand was furious that the turn of events made her postpone the evil plan which she hatched for Sarita. Little did she know that it happened for her own good and that she would play her cards right pretty soon.
To be continued...
