PART 28

Vikrant's Residence:

Vikrant was up most of the night, worrying about Sarita and wondering if she would speak to him considering what happened the night before. He almost made it to their bedroom a couple of times, to check if she was alright; but retracted thinking that he might put her in an awkward situation if she was up or disturb her if she was already asleep. He was pacing along the floor of his study for most of the night and he finally caught a couple of hours' sleep.

He was up like a restless creature; speculating how he would face his wife and handle their situation. He knew deep down that he was scared stiff of their imminent conversation. He stole a glance at the clock and it read 6:45 A.M. and he knew that he had to speak with Sarita before Abhi woke up and that pushed him to make his way towards the bedroom.

He opened the door slowly and looked around the bedroom to find it empty; that meant that his wife was awake, so his eyes automatically went towards the changing room to find her turning around to face him. He was stunned to silence, taking in her gorgeous face and her skin that had a pinkish glow to it; probably a result of their lovemaking. All he wanted to do was just walk towards her and grab her into his arms and kiss her sweetly and tenderly.

Vikrant continued to take in Sarita's appearance until his eyes clashed with hers. He thought that he saw a spark of anger in them, before she averted her gaze and walked further into the bedroom, went towards the side table and started to search for something. He wondered if it was him or if she was giving him a cold shoulder. She ignored him completely and he was not surprised by her reaction at all; because she was probably angry with the whole situation. And he wondered if she was angry and hurt that he was her first.

He shook himself out of these thoughts, because it was not helping at all. It only increased the number of questions for which he had no answers. He wanted to explain his actions to her and clear the air, so that they were on the path of being comfortable around each other again. Friendship was just a relationship that seemed too big a goal to achieve right away. It was going to take a very long time, he thought.

Vikrant opened his mouth to call out her name but something caught his eye at the same time; something which reminded him about the most incredibly beautiful and amazing moment which he shared with his wife, whom he was deeply in love with. He also wondered if he hurt her when he made love to her; he remembered that she cried out a little and he kissed her, hoping that it would distract her enough from the momentary pain. He did not check on her before exiting the room afterwards, considering that it was her first time; and now that he recollected about it, he was full of remorse for the way he handled the situation last night.

He knew that an apology would not suffice; he really needed to beg for her forgiveness. Was that why she was angry, because he did not make sure if she was okay? Or was she upset because she regretted it? He continued staring at it and before he could utter a word, his wife rushed to remove the bed sheets in a hurry; as if she was ashamed of it and of him seeing it.

He saw her move about the room and was waiting for an opportunity for him to be heard; and he chose it when she was silently spreading a new sheet on the cot. He was nervous as hell and he did not know where to begin. So he started with, "Sarita, Can I please talk to you?"

Her body stilled at his words and he knew that she heard him. He waited for her to say something. When she didn't, he knew that he had to continue talking; otherwise this will get postponed to the evening. He carried on saying, "It is about last night."

Sarita halted her actions when her husband spoke to her the first time. She wanted to feign indifference, but it was just so difficult to put up the act since she was so hurt and angry right now. She just did not have it in her to hear him out at present; so she continued with her work, hoping that he would go about his way. But it looked like her husband was in a mood to catch up this morning; she thought when she heard him speak again.

But she dreaded when she heard what came out of his mouth. Didn't he say how he felt about last night already? What more was left to say, she wondered before spinning around to face him.

Vikrant planned to start with an apology for leaving her the way he did and so started tentatively saying, "Sarita, I am really sorry about how..." Only to be interrupted by his wife.

"Stop! Will you please stop it, Mr.Suryavanshi?" She said raising her hand and stopping him. Sarita just did not want to hear how sorry he was for what happened all over again. She did not have any energy left in her to cry anymore for the day.

"But I just wanted to apologize for..." He said only to be interrupted again by Sarita.

"I think you apologized enough last night and I heard every word of it. I don't think you have to repeat it all over again. You see, I am not deaf." She said in low tones, gritting her teeth together. Did he not realize how much this was hurting her? She wondered. She just could not have this conversation eye to eye anymore, so she turned around to finish her half done job.

Vikrant had to strain to hear what she had to say. She sounded so angry and upset about this whole thing. He did not want to put any more pressure on her, but he just had to confirm that she was alright physically; otherwise he would go insane with worry. So he asked her, "Sarita, did I hurt you last night? I meant physically?"

Sarita's paused while her whole body shook with uncontrollable anger. So this is what he had to know, if he hurt her physically? He was sorry to have slept with her but had to find out if he caused her physical pain or not; to put his mind at ease? The truth was he did not hurt her at all; he treated her like a delicate flower. But she was upset because their union meant nothing to him while it meant the world to her; that was the root cause of her anger. She knew that she was being unfair, but that did not stop the bitterness in her tone when she straightened her back and turned around to say, "No, Mr.Suryavanshi, you did not hurt me. So does this ease your mind as you were hoping it would?" She asked him.

Vikrant had a puzzling frown on his forehead. How did she know that this would ease the worry in his mind? If that was the case why was she so angry about it? He wondered. He wanted to ask her the same, before Abhi came barging into the room cheerfully greeting them, "Mama, Papa, Good morning!"

Vikrant and Sarita turned around at the same time, each wondering if Abhi sensed the growing tension between them.
